A movie which had great potential ruined itself by taking a drastic U-Turn
dhadaladi199629 October 2018
Story and Screenplay: It set up the movie well and had great potential. but all of that wasted and the movie ruined itself during the second half. The entire screenplay is to convey a message in a powerful and self introspective way. But the way it messed with a genre after setting up to be a different genre ruined the entire movie.

Acting: The acting was below par in some areas due to the fact as it seemed they tried to fake the realism and it turned out to faker than fake

Background:Score: The music was not even noticeable as it had nothing new or unique. it didn't even sync with some scenes.

Conclusion: A movie which changed its direction mid way after it displayed lot of potential. during the first half.

Story diluted to the point of no return
srsaprba4 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Rachana, an aspiring intern with a major newspaper is working on road civic sense of people who take illegal shortcuts like u-turns on busy roads. She wants to interview to understand mindset of people whose actions expose other road users to perilous conditions. One would imagine this to be an utterly insipid topic (even for an intern), until it unfolds into a major murder mystery. One of the prospective interviewees ends up dead on the day she attempts to visit his home. The police pick her up as a suspect, but Nayak (well played by Aadhi Pinisetty in a very restrained sure footed note), realizes that something major was afoot. When people taking u-turn on the flyover start facing fatal consequences, Samantha's investigative zeal compels her to repeat a dangerous experiment Benjamin Franklin (who conducted the potentially fatal kite experiment) would have been proud of. She takes the dreaded u-turn to find out what happens. It would be an uphill task to resolve a gripping mystery like this on normal terms. Thus the film, goes downhill, making a u turn from normal to paranormal. An added curiosity is a mysterious homeless man who looks like a darker version of Peter Dinklage (of 'Game of Thrones' fame), albeit less mercurial, and assists Rachana. This mystery however does not span any interesting thread, and the homeless man remains role-less for the rest of the film.

The fatal flaw in the film is why people are taking u-turn precisely at the same spot spanning about a couple of feet on a road stretching hundreds of meters. The story could have provided plausible explanation (for e.g. Divider stones coming off loose in that particular segment).

The film preaches civic sense, but the missing issue is common sense. Why were the builders allowed to leave heavy loose stones as dividers on a busy road? The vengeful vigilante spirit (Bhumika Chawla) should have gone after that builder, then the authorities approving this, then the minister responsible, and then.. OK, let's stop here. Speculating on these macabre lines against the powerful all the way to the top may land people in trouble these days. The ghost instead prowls on smaller fish, taking law into its own hands (is there something like ghosts violating law?)

Samantha carries the whole film with her superior acting, and she reminds Anasuya (2007), whose eponymous role was played by none other than Bhumika, that too as a news reporter investigating murders. The film has no distracting songs, focusing on the story. There are no heavy duty scenes of blood, gore for a film of this genre, and instead sports some of the cutest ghosts in the town.

Paranormal stories are hard to get right. Once the cat (ghost actually) is out of the bag, the mystery unravels. Unlike with humans, anything can happen with these entities, making the story too fluid, inconsistent and diluted because of which the initial gripping story became watered down. This is no 'The Omen' (1976), but then few are.

Gripping Screenplay
saru202024 September 2018
Based on a simple idea of breaking a small traffic rule. Screenplay, bgm, characters were just fabulous, but still it feels like the story could've been more stronger.

Started off really well, but...
neshahavan14 October 2018
The story started off really well. I loved the first half as it was both engaging and thrilling. But somewhere around the middle it took a u-turn and turned into a ghost story, which in my opinion made the last part of the movie much worse than it could have been. I still think it's worth a watch, both for the first half and for the great acting by all of the main actors. Another plus point is the lack of songs and separate comedy track. This helped keeping the pace of the movie, as even the second half was quite tight packed and fast paced. Overall raing: 6,5/10

A simple but effective thriller-horror
ishansharma-9560511 November 2018
The genre of the movie is thriller cum horror. It is a thriller till first half and slowly converts into horror towards the end. The suspense is average and one can easily guess it. It is a well balanced film. Initial thrill is balanced against romance. There is a subliminal love triangle here. Horror in the later part is balanced against emotions. The editing keeps the film taut and songs have been done away with. Acting by all is above par. Overall , the film is one time self watch plus one time watch with your very dear one.

Well, very good... Good final plot twists...
RosanaBotafogo12 October 2021
The plot of mystery is great, the development fails a little, Indian productions with some constancies sound unnatural, even when they deal with the supernatural, there's a lack of naturalness, but this is a great example of mystery and suspense, the flaws are not compromise, except for the most demanding moviegoers... Well, very good... Good final plot twists...

Racy!
niranjanaraguraman14 September 2018
The movie starts off slow and accelerates in a great speed and let's us walk out for interval with so many confusions in mind. The second half unveils the suspense in an interesting manner. The movie is full of twists and turns even till the climax, you may guess a very few if you are a frequent thriller watcher. Actors have done their role perfectly, we could feel Aadhi as a familiar character because his character in this movie reminds of his character on Eeram. Samantha Akkineni has done a wonderful job with the character, and has showed so much emotions. Her makeover elevates her character. Cinematography is great through out the movie. No songs in the movie is a great plus because it would have been a speed breaker in the racy ride. Over all this movie is worth watching. Enjoy the magic in theatres.

It was all good until they took a U-turn
The story starts just as we expect from an Indian film(of any language ). Rachna and Aditya loves each other. But their story is way better than usual tamil/telugu films. And I actually liked it. Then rachna visits Shankar's flat for an interview. Shankar is found dead the same day and police calls her for enquiry. Then they find something schoking(I won't revealed it). At that point, film was at top, it could have gone anywhere. Sadly after interval, it went only down hill.

It was so interesting plot. But in the end, turns out to be a ghost/spirit story. This is the problem with Indian supernatural thrillers, they can't have a story without spirits in it. Second half was predictable. There's no chills and thrill. Also, the idea to add horror element failed.

If I am to divide the film into two parts, I would call the first half great and second half a below average one.

A tad bit disappointed
india-amu2513 October 2018
Although the movie started out well, paving way to chilling thrills, the climax ends up disappointing you. The message of civic sense, however, was well conveyed and delivered.

Well etched out thriller
maruthuk-8230714 October 2018
It was a well etched out thriller and kept us glued to our seats till the last half an hour, but did not like last half an hour, as it made us feel like regular movie. Costumes and acting of Samantha could have been better, but acting of Adukalam Naren and Adhi was too good!

I was expecting a human killer, but it was an entity. they should add horror in the genre, and it's thriller tag are not applied quite well.

unexpectedly good
mchinni-4299915 October 2018
Woahh. that was one heck of a movie. Was not expecting that at all. The filmmakers should seriously pat themselves on the back for a job well-done. and it contains such a good message. The message of "what goes around comes back" is highlighted very well, some were calling it cheesy, but it was not portrayed cheesily at all. Kudos to that. I screamed really loudly at one point. Its embarrassing, but true. And the climax build-up is so well done. Samantha garu has done her job amazingly well. everyone else has also done their job well. please follow rules. One must always be aware of how their actions or the lack of it might affect other people. And for underlining that message, a huge thank you to the director, pawan kumar garu who also wrote it. You sir, are one excellent specimen of filmmaking. More power to you.

Great Concept but half hearted execution
ricksarkar6668 November 2019
The movies revolves around a great concept and a social message, but somehow i feel if the makers puts a bit more attention to few minute details it could have been one of the best film came out of Indian flim industry and i dont mean "Bollywood" btw, movies from the Souther part of India are far superior in storytelling than Bollywood. But i am bit disappointed that a little more effort could have been put in the film' screenplay to make it more enjoyable. Nonetheless a great watch. I am giving 6 stars cz i have high expectations from Southern Movie industry.

U-Turn Review
Magow-Intermean22 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
An intern journalist traces the history of people who unlawfully took a u-turn on a city flyover and died in mysterious circumstances. A series of deaths happen in the city in similar fashion. Though all the cases are concluded as suicides, as nothing unusual is suspected, suddenly there comes an intriguing link which connects all of them. All the deceased were those who unlawfully took a U-turn on a city flyover at different times. This creates panic among a junior intern journalist Rachana (Samantha) and Nayak (Aadhi), a cop. Both of them go after the person behind the deaths. It all begins after Rachana, an ambitious and practical girl, who shies away from getting married despite pressure from her mother, starts working on the story of people who take illegal U-turns. She is quite happy with her career and loves spending time in office because of one more reason - her liking for Aditya (Rahul Ravindran), who works as a crime reporter. When the two of them finally go on a date and everything goes well, Rachana is taken to the nearby police station.

Apparently, the person (one of the few who took an illegal U-turn) whom she tried for the purpose of the story has lost his life. Nayak and his superior officer, Chandrasekar (Aadukalam Naren) interrogate her only to find that she has nothing to do with the deceased man. But they also discover that the people, whose names she has with her for the story, are all dead. Rachana and Nayak investigate the case further though Chandrasekar is in no mood to help them. They manage to reach Ritesh (Narain), whose wife Maya (Bhumika) and daughter, passed away in an accident, after which the series of deaths actually began. With ample twists and turns, the plot unfolds slowly and steadily - the reasons behind Ritesh's deceased family and why those who take U-turn are targeted are narrated grippingly, much similar to its Kannada version.

The film, unlike regular whodunit thrillers, is different - there isn't any cat-and-mouse game, yet it holds your attention. With a subtle message and some emotions, the climax, too, isn't the same as the suspense-filled mystery you often come across in Tamil. It, however, could have been more convincing. The film, a bilingual, and has nativity issues in some scenes. The cast includes Telugu actors like Hariteja and Chatrapathi Sekhar, which is fine, but scenes which have Tamil Nadu police wearing Telangana police's badge, police vehicle with Telangana registration number, etc, are awkward in an otherwise interestingly made remake. Samantha does a neat job in a role that undergoes varied emotions, and so is Bhumika, who appears only in a few scenes. Aadhi and Narain, too, play their part well.

Solid Turn N Twist

Warning: Spoilers
Review By Kamal K

U Turn is not a regular whodunit but a well made paranormal thriller that moves at a rapid pace, with a stunning reveal in the climax. U Turn is a suspense thriller that mainly banks on the performances of the lead cast and boy did they bring this movie to life. The likes of Samantha, Aadhi, and Rahul have shown a lot of dedication and that elevates the suspense drama even higher.

Excellent thrilling movie. Did not expect the horror content, as I was expecting just the mystery, but it was indeed the mix of myster + horror + thriller. A well directed film too.
