One of India's top indie auteurs has hooked up with one of South India's biggest movie stars to present Mallaikottai Vaaliban, a big time action spectacle that looks spectacular. Director Lijo Jose Pellissery took the arthouse world by storm with the intense action of 2019's Jallikattu. In the intervening years he's made a pair of strikingly different films, 2020's mystical horror films Churuli (Spiral) and 2022's ethereal magical realist masterpiece Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (Like An Afternoon Dream). The latter film found him working with one of Malayalam cinema's biggest stars, Mammootty, and Malaikottai Vaaliban has him linking up with the other big daddy of the region's cinema, Mohanlal. Malaikottai Vaaliban is a period piece about a wrestler who is unmatched in the ring...

This change is cemented in “Like An Afternoon Dream” which implements a rather oneiric approach throughout, although the tension is not exactly missing from here either.

The social and political landscape of a culture is vast and complex and trying to capture it within a single narrative is quite a task. Many storytellers therefore take a look at the world of politics in order to present their view which more than once results in captivating stories, but is quite demanding as the relations and references are often rather complicated. Director Lijo Jose Pellissery, who garnered international acclaim with his feature “Jallikattu”, rather concentrates on the “small world” of the village to tell stories which shed some light into socio-political mechanisms. However, “Jallikattu” is the centerpiece of a trilogy which tackles those issues, while adding elements such as surrealism and even fantasy to some extent. “R.I.P.”, the first part finished in 2018, tells the tale of a death in a village, an event which not only brings out certain rumors and suspicions within the population, but...

S.S. Rajamouli was in the middle of his Oscar campaign when India threw a wrench into the process. The country announced this week that it will not submit “Rrr,” the breakthrough Indian Telugu-language action-adventure epic that has become a surprise hit in the U.S., as its official Oscar submission for Best International Feature. Instead, the Film Federation of India went with “Last Film Show,” an autobiographical coming-of-age drama about young boy’s burgeoning love of movies.
For many audiences who have embraced “Rrr” in recent months, the decision comes as a shock on many fronts. “Rrr” was the rare crossover event movie from India. The movie pulled in 65 million on opening weekend in India, then grossed 14 million in the U.S., thanks to a theatrical relaunch in arthouses that Variance Releasing dubbed “encoRRRe”; that overlapped with a Hindi-language dub surfacing on Netflix, where it became an even bigger phenomenon.

In recent years, Lijo Jose Pellissery rose to the position of one of the most talented and daring directors of Malayalam cinema. With movies like “Ee.Ma.Yau” or “Jallikattu” he managed to break through the boundaries of regional cinema and with the latter he has even reached an international audience. He started his career with well-crafted genre films, to later gain a reputation of curious experimenter uplifting and extending the generic boundaries to challenging levels. With each of the recent projects, he kept looking for unique ways of expression, eager to show his distinctive voice and mastered the crowd scenes pulsating with nerve and controlled chaos.

ReviewShot entirely in black and white, Alex Joseph’s cinematography complements Palathara’s writing beautifully, pulling in the audience and placing them firmly in the titular place and time—the political economy of mid-twentieth century Kerala.S HarikrishnanArtbeat StudiosChimamanda Adichie once spoke of how impressionable and vulnerable we are in the face of a story. Stories are about power; “how they are told, who tells them, when they’re told, how many stories are told, are really dependent on power.” Don Palathara’s 1956, Central Travancore is, in some sense, an acknowledgement of this ability for stories to shape perceptions, but also an important reminder that they can deceive. The film begins with Onan (Jain Andrews) and friends traveling to Tamil Nadu hoping to witness a “strange ritual”. Once there, they are encountered with the disappointing reality that the stories of such a ritual were mere rumours, and that the said...

Lijo Jose Pellissery seems to have created a school of cinema in Malayalam cinema, and who better to continue his legacy than his former assistant, Tinu Pappachan, who presented his debut with “Freedom at Midnight”, a movie his mentor co-produced alongside Chemban Vinod Jose.
The story follows the same labyrinth paths movies “Jallikattu” does, but the main premise revolves around Jacob, a manager at a big financial firm, who finds himself behind bars when he tries to save the woman he loves from the clutches of a corrupt police force. The fifth edition of EstAsia, a film festival in Reggio Emilia, Italy, dedicated to Asian culture, will begin on June 14, after a year of break due to the covid-19 epidemic.
The series of screenings aims to address, from a different angle, the current problems linked to interculturality and integration. Not a festival aimed only at the fanbase and the professionals therefore, but a moment of involvement and dialogue with the foreign communities present in the provincial and regional area.
The Golden Kaiju, a prize created by the artist Hu-Be, will be assigned this year by a jury composed of Nicola Cupperi (film critic), Lara Ferrari (journalist) and Xu Ying (communication professor at Renmin University in Beijing and Chinese director of the Confucius Institute of the University of Bologna). Then there will be the Audience Award and the Youth Award, allocated by a jury made up of students from the Ariosto Spallanzani High School.

Darius Marder’s innovative “Sound of Metal” and Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World” western each grabbed three sound editing nominations at the 68th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (which will be held virtually on April 16). “Sound of Metal,” the frontrunner, captures Riz Ahmed’s heavy-metal drummer slowly losing his hearing, while “News of the World” creates the shootouts, sandstorms, and rainstorms that assault Tom Hanks on his journey in post-Civil War Texas. The Academy has consolidated sound editing and mixing onto a single category for the first time this season.

Eligibility controversies. Category name changes. Executive committee “saves” allowed. Executive committee “saves” disallowed. The introduction of a nine-entry shortlist. The expansion to 10. Then to 15…and so on. There has been no Academy Award category more frequently and fitfully tinkered with than best international feature film (formerly best foreign language feature).
And so to the overriding question coming out of yesterday’s shortlist of 15 titles (formerly 10; née 9): have all the tinkerings been worth it? Have we finally — maybe even just randomly — hit on the precise combination of variables that will make the selection bulletproof? For the 93rd Academy Awards, with its numerological kismet of 93 international film submissions (equalling last year’s record-setting tally), and its reigning champ “Parasite” being, for the first time in history, also the best picture winner, it sure would be a great time to declare this most broken of categories “fixed.”

A riotous horror-tinged romp starring a runaway buffalo, there’s no other contender for the 2021 best international film Oscar quite like India’s submission, Jallikattu, directed by Malayalam cinema maverick Lijo Jose Pellissery.

A version of this story about “Jallikattu” first appeared in the International Film Issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In a field of Best International Feature Film submissions that includes a handful of horror movies, some excruciatingly drawn-out art films and at least one severed hand bobbing in a cooking pot, India probably has the wildest, craziest film of all in Lijo Jose Pellissery’s “Jallikattu.”
With an approach that is at times reminiscent of Darren Aronofsky’s divisive “Mother!” from 2017, “Jallikattu” takes the story of a water buffalo that escapes from the butcher’s shop in a small mountain village and turns it into an exercise in rampaging testosterone and over-the-top chaos. The last half of the film is one long, crazed action sequence that runs on blood and mud and ends with a huge, grotesque pyramid of men clawing to be king of the hill.
