Hey, you look a little old to be in high school
themick-880332 November 2019
For a B movie I think this film is brightly lit, professionally shot, and moves at a fairly swift pace. The audio wasn't great, I had to turn my sound up to hear the dialogue clearly. The premise is timely, we are all increasingly dependent on our phones and AI is slowly taking over all of our lives. Ok, enough of the compliments, folks.

The dialogue is dumb and very thin. The lead actress, Debs Howard (Cassie) is an attractive woman but looks wayyyy too old to be in high school. Her performance is wooden and that's a problem because she is in virtually every scene and has to carry the movie. We don't get enough story on the her character to really care about her. We don't know learn enough about her illness, her relationship to her mother, her bond to her best friend and alleged boyfriend to really care about how things end up. I wound up cheering more for the creepy boyfriend, Liam, just because he was so over the top in his creepishness.

What we get is the usual revenge fantasy deaths of a bunch of unlikable people. I kept watching out of amusement. How dumb are things going to get? Answer, very dumb. If you are into the one-by-one killing off thing you might find this film entertaining. There are attempts to at humor in some of the death scenes.

The bottom line is that this film is not scary and not deep on any psychological level. It might have been better if they played things totally for laughs, like in the amusing last scene, but taken as a straight horror movie, bleh!

If by chance your phone ever starts telling you to kill people it's time to get a new phone.

Full of irony, but it misses the mark.
Sleepin_Dragon17 November 2019
It's an interesting story, get on a bus or walk into a coffee shop, and everyone has their heads buried in their phones, somewhat obsessional, this film tries to tap into that idea, and for some bits of the film it does. Let's be clear this isn't a horror, it lacks thrills or scares, it's pretty slow paced. It's well acted, although every single character is pretty loathsome, so there's nobody you can warm to, or empathize with, frankly you won't care less what happens to any of them. It filled a bored hour and a bit, I wouldn't watch it again, but the concept is a decent one. 5/10

Just curious...
lucindaoneill15 October 2019
Other than this being a time filler (a movie to watch when you've basically exhausted all the decent horrors on Netflix) I noticed something that bugged me. It wasn't the actors being WAY too old or the other stuff mentioned in reviews. I noticed that every time the video recorded by her 'friend' each time it was played was different to what was recorded first time. I'm a bit of a continuity freak and usually it's laughable but this just added to the overall shoddy feel of the movie, that's before you consider all the other plot holes etc. Just wondering if it's just me that noticed this little goof.

Would only recommend if you're a teenager or out of options and want a thriller and not a good one at that.

So ridiculous
teamodro30 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Apparently having a cell phone that talks to you makes you invincible along with god like strength. This is the only explanation and excuse gor the girl being able to overpower every person she meets.

The movie would have been ok if it didn't have so many ridiculous moments. I can generally accept some plot holes, and take a movie for what it is (aka just enjoy it). This was just too much. The fact that she can overpower everyone at 100 lbs wet, gets away with everything easily, and all that other stuff just took the wind out of my sails. Then the end where she just gets away with it as a victim is just icing on the cake. I get that the writers were trying to be crafty and make it seem like she set the boyfriend up, but comon! They would habe figured out 1000x times over with evidence she did it. Not to mention the fact that all the murders had evidence on here....but apparently the cops just shrugged, and called it over

Breathtakingly terrible
lopezpatricia-061398 November 2019
The 30 year old teenager is such a bad actress. We thought the first ten mins was the beginning to a bad film with the cheap music and worse performance from the narcissistic hormonal football playing boyfriend. Utterly ridiculous and tedious

The best thing about this movie was Hannah the cat.
emmyers2617 November 2019
Everyone in this movie is so stereotyped, the characters are forgettable. There was one second of the fluffiest cat I have ever seen. It was the best thing in the movie.

Sarah's whole character was laughable. Not the actress. The actress did great with what she had. However, it was like no one has ever met a female in their lives. The males were written by someone who hated jocks in high school. All the characters have no soul and you just instantly regret watching it. The writing is so bad "Dunk the junk" was mention in a real conversation in there...three times.

Two star. Would give it zero if it wasn't for creative concept and, of course, Hannah the cat. Best two seconds in the whole movie. Would pet IRL.

Extremely mild spoiler in terms of tropes
SyoKennex9 October 2019
Another typical slasher/revenge horror film with the added effect of AI being the culprit. I haven't personally seen this yet; I've seen a lot of AI films in horror in recent years but usually, it being a demon possessing the AI, so it's quite a nice change to see A.M.I. This is pretty corny and it could have done without the cliche mentally ill ending; not an amazing piece of cinema for the ages, but it is a nice little guilty pleasure film, especially around Hallowe'en. I would recommend giving it a try but probably wouldn't watch it again.

Artificial murderous intelligence
TheLittleSongbird24 September 2019
Saw 'A.M.I' mainly because the premise was really interesting and sounded very unsettling, one of the better premises for any recent film in my opinion. It was also interesting due to it seeming to raise awareness for the negative effects of obsessive cellphone and technological use, a very much current issue and always worth addressing (should be addressed more actually). It was also a film that actually looked like it wasn't made on the cheap.

Will say that 'A.M.I' does have its good elements and doesn't completely squander its premise, did fear it would having seen a lot of potential wastes recently and getting quite tired of it. Do think though that it could have done much more with it though and that it should have been a much better film than it turned out. What could have been something intriguing and decent, and oh my goodness it could have been that easily, turned out instead to be a valiant semi-failure in my view due to such messy storytelling.

Beginning with the good, 'A.M.I' visually looks as though effort was put into it and it didn't look cheap, some atmospheric style and some clever camera angles here. The editing perhaps could have been tighter, but generally didn't have much of a problem with the film visually. Cassie was a lead character worth rooting for and wasn't a dull obnoxious stereotype that is common with characters in similar films.

Music does unsettle and didn't over-emphasise, or at least it didn't to me. The acting was surprisingly acceptable, with Debs Howard being more than up to the task in the lead role and Veronica Hampson steals her scenes without being annoying.

Other than Cassie though, the characters are somewhat ordinary and more could have been done with them. The script generates little personality, let alone tension, is awkward and with so little explained it came over as vague as well.

It is the story that wrecks 'A.M.I', other than some interesting questions raised and a nice element of sarcasm directed at technological addiction and the younger generation that could have featured more actually, it is a mess. There isn't enough creepiness and the suspense and thrills aren't there, ruined too by some very lazy and easily avoidable errors and too much being under-explored and lacking in sense that it becomes one big muddle.

Concluding, great premise but underwhelming execution of it. 4/10

A once in a lifetime experience
CassiesMum3 November 2019
This is the kind of movie that reviews cannot do justice. To experience this movie is to taste the forbidden fruit from the garden of Eden itself. It is such an unmatchable experience that every second after it is finished can only be described as hell - in this case, it's because you'll never be able to see A.M.I. for the first time again.

I consulted numerous medical specialist about voluntary brain damage induced amnesia in the pursuit of that sensation of watching this magnum opus of the entire cinematography art form anew.

I would most recommend this film to people only after they have achieved all their supposed "peaks" in life: Their wedding, the start of their family, house, height of career. After this, these peaks will all look like mounds of dirt compared to the Mt. Everest that is A.M.I.

-1 star since it has ruined any future happiness or joy for me, because nothing could compare

Psycho with an A.I.
DarkVulcan294 November 2019
I checked this out on Netflix, and I gotta say it's not great, but a good way to pass the time. The premise has been done too many times. But still an amusing film, The problem is it's too short and mostly nobody except for the main character feels developed.

Debs Howard really gives a creepy unhinging performance, your scared of her, but at the same you can't help but feel sorry for her. But her playing a high school student was not very convincing, cause she does not look a high school student. And the actress doing the A.I. voice is also good. But everybody else in the movie just seems phoned in. Not great, but not terrible either, just something to pass the time.

30yo highschool student?
mochteam3 December 2019
This is the problem with this film. Hard to take it seriously when the lead actor looks like she should picking her daughter up from highschool not attending one. I keep trying to figure out in the beginning if they were in college or what. Then I find out they're supposed to be in highschool?

Extraordinarily boring and nonsensical!
jhmoondance6 October 2019
Ridiculous script, preposterous acting, the most outstanding performance of this piece of rubbish goes to the cat in the very beginning of the film! I can't believe anyone who isn't certifiable would put money into the making of such a pathetic attempt at a horror/psychological movie! They should have lifted up the loo seat n flushed the money down the pan!

One of the worst ever...
synnyzter31 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First off this is not horror, horror doesn't make you laugh the entire time from being so ridiculously unrealistic, awful, boring, and utterly stupid. As if something like Siri would utter a few words and you instantly turn into a serial killer? Yeah, that's literally what this trash is lol. Then just when I thought it couldn't get any worse or more unrealistic, the ending happened. I can't honestly say any of this was a spoiler, you can't spoil something that was this bad in the first place. Avoid it unless you want a bloody comedy.

Avoid like the plague!
hellornola12 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't have much to say that wasn't already said in other comments. The casting and acting were terrible, the plot was full of holes, and the ending was just ridiculous.

To make matters worse, the main actress actually was told to put a real cat in a choke hold! Even if the cat wasn't actually being choked, why would you force an animal into that kind of position?! It's animal abuse.

Also, I hate the fact that when they show what the main characters pills are for it says 'bipolar'. Way to paint a bad image for people who actually have Bipolar Disorder. I'm so surprised that Netflix allows a show like this.

Too much like I Am Mother, without the impact.
Patient4445 July 2019
After finding out that Asylum does movies closed titled to other such productions, I've noticed this trend happening more and more in the horror industry.

So, A.M.I isn't anything spectacular but has an interesting premise, a great a-la Carpenter soundtrack and that's about it. The rest sadly comes as generic as possible, and misses every mark out there. Perhaps there was room for more, but I fail to see how and where, because the plot is over stretched from start and just lingers and lingers.

I wish I had more better things to say about it, but sadly I will not recommend it. It's too much out there, trying but failing to deliver anything new or captivating in its own way.

Cheers!

Let your heart tell you what to feel, not your phone...
paul_haakonsen4 July 2019
Initially I hadn't really expected much from "A.M.I." from director Rusty Nixon. But still, I decided to watch it when I was given the chance.

And let me just say that "A.M.I." turned out to be an alternative movie which definitely broke lots of generic formulas of horror movies. And it was actually a refreshing and welcomed change of events and pace that this movie had to offer. I have to admit that I was genuinely entertained by the movie and there weren't really a dull moment throughout the story.

The characters in the movie, well most of them are fairly generic and doesn't really stand out in any way, as they doesn't really display much of a backstory or have much influence on the storyline. But the lead character Cassie was quite interesting, and the combination of the character and the acting performance of Debs Howard definitely carried the movie quite well.

"A.M.I." is by no means your average horror movie, and as such it might not just appeal to everyone. But I definitely think you should take the time to watch "A.M.I." if you are given the chance. It was actually a very enjoyable movie.

This is more of a psychological horror movie than it is an average horror slasher or pure horror movie.

I especially loved the sarcastic take that the storyline had on the youth's of today and their unhealthy addictions to their phones. That was just a stroke of genius.

Six out of ten thumbs up from me for "A.M.I.".

Too sum this up, was like a Black Mirror episode
Birkyirky12 October 2019
Frankly speaking it was for me somewhat of a Black Mirror episode. I see some debate in the reviews whether this was more science fiction or horror. Myself seem to side on the Sci-Fi aspect of it but there was definitely a good amount of horror as well. The idea was fresh and choice of characters was as simple as it gets. Nothing wrong with the movie overall a quick watch to get your techno / sci-fi / Slasher fix on.

Very much a Horror
fudgydotcom4 October 2019
People seem to be focusing on the A.I. aspect of this movie and realizing it's really not about that at all, but about trauma & mental illness ignored left to fester. Most can't relate, so I get the confusion/misidentification. A.M.I. is just the focus point to existing & growing issues in her life.

No narrative but cool and creepy idea...enjoyable
zack_gideon8 October 2019
Concept is great. Acting ok. Narrative bad. This should have been a really well done black mirror episode. Despite it's flaws I enjoyed it. Would have been better with more back story and character development. But I get the picture, they just want the idea to be core of the movie. Overall liked it! 7/10

not a horror, but a thriller about our cellphone obsession
NijazBaBs7 July 2019
I liked the ending and few funny things typical for young people, except bit unreal and extreme. Makes us aware of our obsessions to phone and how they can or can not replace people. Few cool things in form of talk and revenge. Also liked that unlike in most other things that everything looked real (cat, stabbing, burning, blood). But everything else is so unexplained, unfinished, unclear, ignored, without any reason. Meaning bad story, has so much holes that makes us wonder the purpose of all the happenings. Maybe this horror is best suited for younger people or kids who believe in magic and do not ask questions. I liked that movie is about our current problems and technology, so makes it more interesting.

That end scene had me laughing so hard
olivewahh9 January 2020
I love that the lead chick who is 30 years old is playing a high school student haha! You could tell straight away that she wasn't a teen.

Cassie (Debs Howard) finds a phone which seems to have the only feature as voice feature like Siri on iPhones. Cassie changes the voice to sounds just like her dead mother.. a little odd. Cassie's life begins to turn upside down when her phone reveals the truth of a dark secret to Cassie which all goes down hill.

I've gotta say that even though this is clearly a B Grade horror film, the film quality was pretty good. The acting and script... not so much. The story is just a mess and it just becomes a massive LOL when you see the end scene. I only watched this cause I wanted a quick film to kill some time, and this was one of the shortest even though it felt a lot longer.

Don't waste your time on this one, it's honestly a joke.
