Gave this a try, to see if it is truly as bad as they say. Long story short, it is. The dialogue is corny, the musical score is horrid and it is overall cringe. I usually have something constructive to say about most things, but with this, I was lost for words.

How to ruin the Batwoman character (CW way)
cjonesas5 June 2020
CW should really reconsider who they hire as writers and who they count on as producers, whatever Television company or Distribution they work in.
Batwoman the series is a mock-up parody and circus, swinging and splashing its futile and debilitating screenplay, acting and poor characters representation, making a total mess as a result.
It is awful as a series, totally unacceptable as a crossover crisis and must be cancelled at the speed of light.
CW executives, refrain from doing a second season, channel the money elsewhere to a decent use and please seek some guidance on series ordering, making, renewal and casting from professional people out there.

They are correct...this stinks to the high cosmos!

I had to see this for myself. Surely, it must have some redeeming qualities, I said to myself. Myself may never forgive me for watching this slime, that should be wiped away with Bounty papertowels from the commercials shown in the breaks. Stay away. Read the comments here and be forewarned. There is only sadness ahead.
Terrible.

This was so horrid

I thank my inner tolerance for just stopping in the middle of the 4th episode. DC seams to have a desire to destroy itself as nothing worthwhile has been released on a grand scale since Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. You can't compare a few tween- teen oriented CW shows to what Marvel has accomplished. I simply compare those shows success over Marvels incredibly disappointing Netflix minor hero story lines.
Wait so you cancel swamp thing and renew this ???

Good ironic laugh, painful if watching honestly
passan-8067018 January 2021
I recommend this series if watching ironically.
It is a never ending dispenser of hilarity.
I was really curios about Batwoman in general. A well written crime drama with a hot chick with advanced gadgets in a leather costume. How exciting it this? But NOPE! This series is bad in every way. Technically it looks like I created it. Visually bland and forgettable. But acting... Oh boy, this is next level bad. Every single person that tries to act is ether cringe or unbelievable. Giving this product an honest watch is one of the most painful and frustrating experiences one can ever sit through.
Is this a tax write off? I am struggling to understand how this was even made.

Should not wear or even mention the name Batman

This is by far the worst adoption of the Batman universe. If this is what cw produces on the go it might not exist very much longer. What an complet abomination, and ist 3 seasons long what kind of dumb mindless person can watch this and enjoy this. Super girl was bad but Batwoman won the price.
Long story short the acting is abysmal, the story is full of incomplete plots and the Camara work my 10 year old niece could have done much better. No idea why this has right of existence and who signed of on this program. I hardly give one Star but common this is offensive to the Batman universe and their fans.

Unbelievably dumb

So season 2 rolls around and I was curious how they would transition to the new girl, and apparently now the suit is ultra rare and makes people powerful. So now there's no training required, ol' girl just put the suit on and went to town on all of the bad guys, get the heck outta here, and the only thing that could penetrate it is a kryptonite bullet? Who writes this stuff? Lmao cancel this show already, hella dumb.
Why is it not cancelled yet !!!!!!!!

Stereotyped character
codygdietrich7 October 2019
She is a biker lesbian with short hair, Ramones t-shirt and possible anger issues. Could they have put anymore stereotypes into one character? I felt like they drop you into the middle of a story. There is so much back story about her family, her ex-girlfriend, her personal life, Bruce Wayne/Batman and Gotham that isn't discussed. Not to mention that security guard seems to know a little too much.
Bottom line the storyline felt rushed and the character seems to be a walking lesbian stereotype from the 80s. As a huge Batman fan I was excited to see this as a member of the LGBT community I'm concerned where it is going to head when it opens with a lesbian character defined by such close-minded stereotypes. Hopefully it joins us in the 21st century where a women knowing martial arts and ridding a motorcycle doesn't make her a lesbian.

Unwatchable

Was awful with Ruby. Hoped it would improve with the race swapped lead but same awful writers. I see it has gone from 2/10 to 3/10. How does it keep getting renewed without viewers? The new plots are recycled and tedious.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the worst show ever

Lousy Cast Of Actors, Storylines And Scripts Destroying A Much Loved DC Crimefighter.
silicontourist5 January 2022
Its not a case of whether this series is being slammed by Marvel fans as it is also the DC fans slating the weekly rubbish of utter trash! The new breed of superhero show directors have turned our fave heroes and heroines into super wimps (just look at the weekly veiwing of Supergirl getting her ass kicked week after week as is the same with Barry Allan aka the Flash) Our comic faves are being dumbed down and trashed by ratings seeking egotistical lovey dovey idiot directors etc! Ruby Rose was bad enough as the crime fighter because of her butch way of of being more BATMAN than BATWOMAN...and the fact she has only one level of role playing which means she cannot act at all.
I for one don't care what a persons sexuality leanings are (I worked in the Hair & Beauty industry for almost 30 years) but Bat-Woman was never meant to be played as a butch mannish person. The television industry is just going way overboard with their must introduce, and have in all programs, over the top gay character representation in every good, bad or run of the mill weekly TV series episodes; Its overkill! Just like the nearly all black actors series of shows that have sprung up (and some of them have been absolutely fantastic watching). The industry is trying to be too PC and trendy and, when you join that to the fact that shows are run by advertisers calling the shots we get the viewers suffering the consequences of constantly cancelled shows...just because they expect far too high ratings stats!
Season 2 and 3 have just sunk further down into the garbage swamp. That is mainly because (1) Bat-Woman's fight choreography is so bad and she is constantly getting her butt kicked. The actress playing her looks completely out of shape and not fit, toned and fit as she should look for an action heroine who has no superpowers. She gets knocked out and nobody removes her mask...which would be the first thing a villain would do! The character of Alice is played well...but the warped and twisted mind is overplayed and hammed up far too often; still, she's the only interesting character in the show.
All this trying to fill the show with pretty things (and I am being kind when I say that) who have no acting talent and totally crappy wardrobes to wear each week is so drab! We keep getting low cut blouses and tops etc with camera angles constantly trying to look down said items at boobs that do not exist. Perfect example is the Asian doctor...micro mini skirts flashing okay legs but her chest is more like goose pimples than breasts. Its not a sexy cast...at least IMHO!
This catering to the Instagram and Tik-Tok -or other social media output - generation is so pathetic and getting worse. Quality is sacrificed for ratings and greed of money profits etc. So, all in all, this is a complete and utter tasteless offering of numb-nut garbage....once again IMHO!

This is by far the worst superhero show I have ever seen
shoebsaad26 April 2023
IMO, the show did not do justice to the source material or the character of Batwoman-also, the dialogue and character development were subpar. Additionally, the show faced behind-the-scenes controversy, including the departure of Ruby Rose after the first season and allegations of a toxic work environment, Which I think was the final nail in the coffin.
Overall, opinions on the quality of "Batwoman" vary, with some viewers enjoying the show and others finding it lacking. Ultimately, whether or not the show is "bad" is subjective and depends on individual opinions, but I know it is not for me. I felt I wasted my time.

I used to really like The CW's DC Comics TV Universe, better known as the 'Arrowverse', as the first couple seasons of Arrow as well as the first(and most of) the second season of The Flash were fantastic; the first seasons of Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow being solid; and everything after in at either 'alright' to 'meh' to 'pretty poor'. The yearly crossover events are still kind of fun though...I'd be lying to say that I am not at all interested in what Crisis on Infinite Earths is going to present. However, the longer the keep growing it the less the creative higher ups appear to care about good storytelling and trying to work best with their restrictive budgets and instead focus on just pandering to certain political ideologies and try hard to be 'hip' and 'trendy'...What were once very solid superhero programming have become bland, flat, and generally uninteresting. I am of the opinion they should probably stop with this year's big crossover event and Arrow's finale but it looks like they want to milk the cow more...Sadly, Batwoman, the newest entry in the universe, does not reignite interest.
I will start off with the good(which is very few); both Dougray Scott and Rachel Skarsten are great as Kate Kane's father Jacob and Alice. The color grading is effective and definitely gives the series its own identity(accompanied with a tighter, more cinematic aspect ratio and use of wide angle lenses). The music is fine too, though fairly generic. That's pretty much it though. Now the bad:
1. The character of Kate Kane is written as very cold and uninteresting and Ruby Rose plays her as such on screen. She was fine in Elseworlds, but it seems that that presentation was the beginning and the end of her personality, or lack thereof as a character. Rose also struggles a lot trying to fake an American accent, and sounds pretty much the same in tone no matter what is needed for a scene.
2. The action is fairly poor. I understand this is TV and you only have a short period to choreograph and record on camera but come on anything here can be easily done by the average person with much less of the budget. Nothing is uniquely staged or reveals anything about the characters and how they handle such dramatic situations.
3. The flashbacks. My goodness whoever made the decision to edited it that way should probably be let go from their job, you can barely make out what is going on because of how jittery and overblown the image quality is. It adds nothing to the story and is just an annoyance.
4. Politics over story. Okay we get it she's a tough female who is highly skilled and her romantic interests are for those of her own gender, that's all great but when you keep hammering that in every couple of minutes it just gets tiresome and shows that the producers probably do not understand the character of Kate Kane beyond a surface level description. Batwoman is a very complex character with a rich history, but this does not appear to be made by actual fans but those who would rather like to use them to pander to a few people on Twitter.
5. Disrespecting one hero to make the heroine better. It seems that the producers of this show really want to make it seem like Batman isn't such a good hero to begin with and want to make Batwoman out to be the real hero Gotham always needed, this totally disrespects the source material and Bruce and Kate's relationship.
Unless the rest of the season is a major improvement I see this as being another nail in the coffin of the once fine Arrowverse, and it might also bring the hammer along with it too.

One of the worst shows ever (and it has nothing to do with the sexes)

It's fair to say the following:
This series has no artistic content. The costumes are bad, Gotham doesn't resemble any Gotham worthy of the name from a longtime comic fan point of view, and there is no respect for the source material either. I don't mind that women play a major role here. I am not misogynist. The fact that other sexualities apart from heterosexuality play a role here doesn't bother me either. I don't care what people do within their private sexuality, as long as everything is done in agreement with the respective partner. If that were the case, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy a large part of the Batwoman comics either, because - surprise! - Here too, women and, for example, lesbians play a prominent role. And I think Batwoman's first run in the comics is awesome. Nevertheless, it can be said that the men's bashing that takes place here can hardly be surpassed in terms of cringe feelings. Batwoman springs from the Batman myth. Is that bad or untrue orwhat? Facts are facts and remain facts.
For sure it's also fair if somebody likes this show. I don't understand why the should, there are no cineastic or artistic reasons for that, but hey, tastes are different, opinions differ. But it's also true, that there are many good reasons for a bad review of this series. I already named a few, but there are more, such as the soporific dialogues (a real person would never speak that way), the bad cinematography, the embarrassing antagonists, etc. Etc.
This doesn't make somebody a sexist or whatever. To assume so is wrong and deletions of non-offending critizism is not okay.
I find it embarressing, that many people can't respect other, negative, opinions on this show, and try to call them out as ignorant or whatever.. That they think they are on the side of the good and the just is a mystery to me.
In my opinion, it's a fact that this series is the worst that has happened to comic book adaptations since Catwoman. If you enjoy? Have fun, but don't put down people who express another opinion.

A very bad start...Poor story telling and just a bad pilot...At no point did I get into the character, and why should I care about her ex, she dumped BW twice .very Hard..But BW will fight for her WHY...And how easy was it to get access to all of Bruce W life ...Just walk in and its all hers the cave and all..We saw 1 training moment and a discharged military carrier , but she is a badass fighter that knows all of Batman moves and gadgets like a pro Btw Batwan is bad so far
Dumbest. Heroes. Ever.
jcgoodwin219 May 2021
I liked this at first. I enjoyed the visuals, the family story line, the acting (particularly that of Skarsten and Rose), and the whole idea of Bruce Wayne's female cousin finding the cave and taking over in his absence. The effort was there.
Unfortunately, the lack of logic kept pulling me out of the story, as the writers had to make their heroes conveniently stupid in order to keep the antagonist on the run. Without getting specific, I often found myself asking, "Why don't the heroes just bring the villainess to justice RIGHT NOW?" Instead, the protagonists waste time talking to her, letting her bait them, or backing down when they don't have to.
Even worse, Batwoman goes easy on the villiainess for personal reasons, putting selfishness ahead of public safety. How in the world is the audience supposed to root for a hero who does that?
Not recommended.

Sooo bad and stupid
iliasalk25 June 2021
On the one side we have the psychopaths killing people without mercy, all over the place. On the other we have the "super hero" bat woman, always doing everything wrong and trying solve problems by talking (lol). A completely stupid and absolutely pathetic script. By now, we are all convinced that the world is better and safer without this batwoman stupid version. 1 to 10 cause there is no 0.
I can't believe this went for 3 seasons
zendodeb24 May 2022
I made it about 1/3 the way thru the 1st season.
The cast was good. The sets and costumes were good. The writing was awful. I mean bottom of the barrel, looking up at horrible bad writing.
I was not surprised when Ruby Rose left.
I was surprised they tried for season 2.
