"Star Trek" is one of the most iconic and enduring science fiction franchises of all time, following the adventures of Starfleet in the far-future as they explore space, the final frontier. To bring strange new worlds and civilizations to life, "Star Trek" leans heavily into visual effects, many of them cutting edge for technology available at the time. These special effects did everything from showcasing the starship Enterprise to making the ship's memorable transporter look seamlessly functional. Simply put, "Star Trek" wouldn't be what it is without its meticulously realized visual effects.
It takes a whole team and a whole process to bring these futuristic sights to the screen and these behind-the-scenes photographs offer a look at how it was all made. From extensive use of models and bluescreen to modern digital projection, "Star Trek" uses every visual effect trick in the book to thrill audiences. Here is what "Star Trek...

“Ooh, jukebox” – the words uttered by the Fourteenth Doctor when invited to nosey around the Fifteenth Doctor’s new Tardis in the closing moments of 60th anniversary special “The Giggle”.
Ooh, jukebox indeed. Specifically, the Doctor’s jukebox is a 1946-designed Wurlitzer 1015 nicknamed “The Bubbler” on account of the bubbles that move through its colourful tubes as it plays tunes. Even more specifically, we’ve seen the same make and model of jukebox twice before on Doctor Who, once on the set of Clara’s 1950s-Diner Tardis, and once five billion years into the future on Platform One, where the great and the good are gathered to watch the imminent destruction of planet Earth.
Whether or not it’s supposed to be the self-same jukebox from those previous appearances, or simply something shiny that caught the Doctor’s eye, the songs it plays are significant. Production designer Phil Sims explained...

With a title like Freddy’s Fridays, it’s obvious this was meant to cash in on the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s. And with the length of time that film took to actually get made both of the other knockoffs, The Banana Splits Movie and Willy’s Wonderland ended up preceding it to release, so Freddy’s Fridays has the mockbuster slot all to itself.
Todd is bringing an escort named Anastasia home. She doesn’t seem overly concerned when he brings her not to his apartment but to a basement full of candles, chains, and a book with an eye in the middle of the cover. She even reads from it, which is a big mistake. Four figures appear and hack her to pieces as Todd watches.

There are so many iconic horror monsters that have graced film screens over the years, striking fear in the hearts of audiences of all ages. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, witches, zombies, and…circus clowns?
Ostensibly, a clown is a comedic performance, making fools out of themselves for the laughter and happiness of their audience. But as anyone who’s had to counsel a crying kid after they interacted with a birthday party clown will know, they often provoke the opposite response instead. A 2016 survey by the Morning Consult found that 42 percent of Americans were, to some degree, afraid of clowns: admittedly, this survey occurred after a minor mass hysteria over a series of alleged evil clown sightings across America, but the fact that “evil clown sightings” were even a thing indicates there’s some deeper hangups involving the make-up clad fools.

Together, co-hosts Michael Roffman and Dan Caffrey flip through all the pages, discussing the added scenes, the way our favorite characters are fleshed out, and whether or not these additions warrant a place in the film.
Bonus: After they discuss the book, Roffman connects with Printed in Blood co-founder and publisher Steven Hoveke, who shares some insights into the forthcoming illustrated reprint due out in 2024. In addition to teasing what to expect,...

As of today, October 13, 2023, Microsoft has officially completed its nearly $70 billion acquisition of publisher Activision Blizzard. Though the two sides reportedly agreed to an acquisition way back in January 2022, the deal has been modified, scrutinized, and debated by a number of regulatory bodies (not to mention other gamers) since then. Following an exhaustive process that required the Microsoft team to make quite a few concessions, the deal is finally complete.
There is so much to say about this deal, and we hope to be able to share much of that information with you in the coming days and weeks. However, you’re not alone if the first question that popped into your mind is “What games and franchises do Microsoft and Xbox now control as part of the Activision Blizzard deal?

Frontman Josh Homme recently said he’s disappointed when bands don’t play their hits, and he certainly didn’t let down Qotsa fans by kicking off the show with perhaps the band’s best-known song, “No One Knows.”
The 18-song set also included four songs off Qotsa’s new album, In Times New Roman…, alongside favorites like “My God Is the Sun,” “Little Sister,” and “Go With the Flow.

Roland Emmerich has launched a couple franchises with movies he has directed – Universal Soldier and Stargate – but he didn’t have anything to do with the stories that followed. He contributed to the Godzilla franchise, but his contribution wasn’t well received. And when he tried to make a “decades later” sequel to his film Independence Day, that didn’t go very well either. His movie Moonfall was supposed to kick off a trilogy, but it bombed instead. Now he’s masterminding a project that’s being called a franchise from the moment it’s announced. It’s called Space Nation, and it’s going to start out with an online video game, which will be followed by a TV series and animated shorts.
Described as a “space opera”, the Space Nation franchise is coming our way from Emmerich; Jerome Wu, who worked on World of Warcraft; Tony Tang, who...

“Avatar: The Way of Water” and “E.T.” were just some of the films recognized at the 16th Krakow Film Music Festival in Krakow, Poland. The festival concluded on Monday, wrapping up the celebration of this year’s celestial lineup.
“Faced by the challenges posed by the pandemic, as well as the war that broke out at our doorstep, many of us have taken refuge in cinematic works – either trying to glimpse into the future or relive the amazing films from our childhood,” said Carolina Pietyra, director of the Krakow Festival office, in a statement. “The headline of this year’s edition of the Krakow Film Music Festival – Out of Space – stands for everything that takes us to other spaces and responds to our longing to explore realms unknown.”

San Francisco, May 25 (Ians) Outgoing Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Thursday said that the technical ‘fiasco’ during Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ 2024 US presidential election bid on Twitter Spaces was actually the “top story on earth” and he welcomes all US Presidential candidates to do so on his platform.
Reacting to how traditional media described the technical glitch, Musk said: “I call it massive attention. Top story on Earth today.”
He further said: “All Presidential candidates are most welcome on this platform.”
The livestream event was hosted by Musk and David Sacks, a tech entrepreneur.
“This was by far the biggest room ever held on social media. Twitter performed great after some initial scaling challenges. Thanks Twitter Team for adapting so quickly to make history,” Sacks said in a tweet.
Twitter Space with DeSantis reached around 701,000 listeners, the highest it’s ever been.
Musk said: “Twitter new account signups just went ballistic.

This post contains major spoilers for "Fast X."
The fact that 2001's "The Fast and the Furious" kickstarted its story with a group of street racers hijacking trucks with illegal DVDs feels like something that took place in an alternate universe. Nearly two prequels and nine sequels later, the "Fast & Furious" franchise has grown and mutated beyond recognition, emerging as a tentpole blockbuster franchise with increasingly audacious stunts completely removed from the realm of reality.
This aspect of "Fast & Furious," however, has often worked in its favor — the genuinely impressive vault chase sequence in "Fast 5" calls for an appreciation for the franchise's commitment to pulling off the impossible, while entries like "F9" ensure that ludicrous-yet-entertaining action set pieces are balanced with meaningful emotional stakes. While "Fast X" doubles down on its dedication to going all out on its premise with a growing cast of globetrotting characters, Louis Leterrier...

Forty-nine years ago, a front-page headline in Nashville’s Tennessean proclaimed “Marty’s a Mandolin Pro at 15,” heralding Marty Stuart’s teenaged role in Lester Flatt’s late-period band Nashville Grass. Stuart would also tour with Johnny Cash and achieve mainstream country success before establishing himself and his longtime band, the Superlatives, as stalwarts of the musically expansive Americana landscape.

A rom-com in space?–don’t knock it ’til you’ve watched it. While a “When Harry Met Sally” knock-off set in a future galaxy may be too bold a move for some, writer/director Michael Lukk Litwak‘s feature debut mostly makes the concept work. Sure, he’s guilty of recycling an old favorite, setting it against a chroma-key, and doing so on the cheap. But why fault him for that? With its lo-fi sensibility and winning charm, “Molli And Max In The Future” remixes a genre classic that also offers a mild antidote for what ails current American cinema.

“The Days I Would Like to Forget” by Ukrainian film collective Tabor, which picked up the top industry award at international documentary festival Visions du Réel, is a trilogy project that examines the consequences of war.
It is directed by Alina Gorlova, Maksym Nakonechnyi, Simon Mozgovyi and Yelizaveta Smith, who have been working together and documenting the war in their country for close to a decade.
The project is divided into three 70-minute chapters: “Human & War,” which examines the impact of war on everyday life, “Death & Life,” which focuses on the perception of death during the Russian-Ukrainian war, and “Space & Time,” which investigates the link between the war in Ukraine and other parts of the world.
Gorlova, who was in Nyon to pick up the award together with producer Eugene Rachkovsky, told Variety how all four directors started filming the war in the immediate aftermath of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia on Feb.

The path to Robert Rodriguez's "Machete" was circuitous. When Rodriguez and his friend Quentin Tarantino made their 2007 film "Grindhouse," they attempted to recreate a 1970s exploitation movie experience by providing two separate features, each one marked by missing reels, bad print jobs, and visual scratches on the print itself. "Grindhouse" also famous featured a series of previews for coming attractions that didn't exist. Edgar Wright invented a film called "Don't," while Eli Roth invented a fictional slasher movie called "Thanksgiving." Rob Zombie conceived of a horror movie called "Werewolf Women of the S.S." starring Nicolas Cage, and Rodriguez himself kicked off the "Grindhouse" experience with a fake movie called "Machete."
In the fake "Machete" preview, Danny Trejo played the title character, a vengeful Mexican mercenary, once a Federale, who gets into a series of seemingly unconnected violent shenanigans. He was also quite proficient at charming young women. Machete...

Sixteen years ago, directors Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino teamed up to bring us the awesome double feature Grindhouse – which consisted of not just Rodriguez’s movie Planet Terror and Tarantino’s movie Death Proof, but also several faux trailers made by the likes of Eli Roth, Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie, and Rodriguez himself. Roth’s faux trailer was for the slasher Thanksgiving, which is finally happening as a full feature. Rodriguez’s faux trailer was for the action movie Machete, which became a feature in 2010, and did well enough that a sequel titled Machete Kills followed in 2013. Machete Kills also had a faux trailer in it, one for another Machete sequel: Machete Kills Again… in Space. And since that faux trailer promised our hero Machete would return, fans have been clamoring for that sequel to happen for ten years now. Speaking at the SXSW film festival, Rodriguez admitted that...

This article is spoiler-free for The Ark premiere.
Around the dawn of the new millennium, TV shows primarily set aboard spaceships were abundant if not universally watched. The era produced classics like Battlestar Galactica and the Stargate franchise, but it also found niche audiences for shows like Farscape and Andromeda. Even the most low-budget efforts have only become more revered with time, and audiences remember them fondly.
Thankfully, The Ark evokes that same sense of adventure, only with more modern sensibilities and special effects. That shouldn’t be too surprising given that the showrunners of the Syfy series are Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the original Stargate movie, and Jonathan Glassner, who co-created Stargate Sg-1, the successful televised spinoff that itself spawned several other series.

So we’ve wanted to have him be involved from the beginning in some fun, clever way,” executive producer Michael Heyerman told TheWrap. “It just so happened that our Season 3 was also the 90th anniversary of Lego as a company.
