Runaway Bulara gets shelter in a hermitage where his childhood friend Bheekhu lives. Years back, when prayers at this place blessed childless Lekhu and Chando with Bheekhu, Bulara was born as the third child of haughty Ratta and Melo.
Bulara's elder brother Charna marries Naini. Childless Naini is very affectionate with Bulara and his best friend Bheekhu. When Bheekhu becomes sick, his parents send him to the hermitage in compliance with their committed prayers.
Hurt by Bheekhu's departure Bulara becomes sick and gets respite only after meeting his friend. Being childless, Debo has to face insults from her in-laws. Bulara grows as a young man and gets attracted towards a gypsy girl Naini.
After getting insulted by Bulara's father Ratta, Naini stops coming to his house to get buttermilk. Lekhu and Chando tell Debo that her in-laws are planning for Charna's remarriage but she has deep faith in her husband.
Smitten by his yearning for Naini, Bulara satisfies his urge with village girls. But influenced by Kangan, a neighborhood athlete, he starts working on his body and mind. Breaking his wife's faith, Charna agrees for second marriage.
Bulara's elder sister Kaki gets attracted towards Kangan. Fed up by her passionate advances, Kangan leaves the village. Bulara and Kaki both feel dejected. Charna reveals to Debo that he is going for second marriage.
Bulara refuses to accept Jeeto, the second wife of Charna and leaves house to live in family's farms. Naini returns in his life and passion sways the lovers into the forbidden act.,
When Charna fails to bring Bulara back, Debo goes to convince him. Instigated by Jeeto, Ratta and Melo point fingers at Buara-Debo relationship. On Debo's insistence, Bulara takes Debo to her parents' home.
Firm stand by Debo's family forces Ratta to give Debo her share in land and property. Jeeto's pregnancy brings happiness in the house. Naini too is expecting Bulara's child. Kaki is sent to city for higher education.
Ratta asks Bulara to get rid of Naini and her child. Knowing about Naini's pregnancy, her mother beats her. Scared by the wrath of gypsies, Bulara runs away to the hermitage. He returns to the village to find that Naini has died.
Haunted by the memories of Naini, repentant Bulara leaves Bheekhu's hermitage and reaches another hermitage occupied by fake monks. Putting his life in danger, he saves the grandson of caretaker devotee Tichhna from a fake monk.
Devotees insist Bulara to occupy highest seat in the hermitage. Debo is mistreated at home. Frustration of rejection in love makes Kaki compromise her moral fiber. Students make fun of Ratta when he visits her college.
Continuous insults force Debo to shift to another house and become self-dependent. Haunted by Naini's memories and his guilt, Bulara becomes an aimless wanderer. Shocked by Kaki's ignominious acts, Ratta gets a paralytic attack.
Tichhna stops taking anything when Bulara doesn't return on the due date. A hermit Sadhu Ram guides Bulara to get rid of his escapism and find his future path. Debo refuses to fulfill repentant Ratta's last wish to be pardoned.
Ratta dies after Debo pardons him. Bulara returns to hermitage and becomes a respected hermit as time passes. Charna's grown up sons mistreat their sick father and grandmother. Melo gets shelter at Debo's house and dies there.
Bulara's urge takes him to Debo's house. During Melo's post-death rites, now almost blind Debo and Bulara announce to sell the lands of their share to build an eye hospital. Disgruntled Jeeto's greedy sons conspire to kill them.
Charna comes to know about assassination plan and foils it. Devotees, Bheekhu and even Kaki contribute for the hospital. Bulara gets shot when he tries to thwart a burglary in the hermitage. Surprisingly, Kangan is the shooter burglar.
Despite medical aid arranged by Kangan at his place, Bulara's condition keeps on deteriorating. Yet he reaches at the foundation laying of the hospital to fulfill Debo's wish. His agony ends as he joins Naini in the other world.
