I can't believe they got an ok for this script
dhooghesven26 February 2019
Despite the bad reviews I still gave it a shot because I love Stargate and Connor Trinneer ( ST Enterprise ) It sure is low budget but that isn't really the issue here. The trouble is that the script is so bad it gets painful to watch. You can see they wanted to make this movie in line with the rest of the franchise but the "humor" is so bad it resembles amateur theater and the story is so full with stuff done far better in other movies. I really can't believe they got permission to put the Stargate name on this. Nothing new, nothing added to the story and this certainly will not be the start of a reboot. I think many fans will be disgusted by this and I highly doubt this flick will introduce a new generation to the franchise.

Cheap Trick
Jackbv12315 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Let's rewrite half of what we know about Catherine and her work with the Stargate and then use the incredibly cheap trick of a memory wipe to reconcile it.

But that wasn't nearly the only reason this movie is bad. The acting is mostly bad. The story line is cliche. The dialogue is juvenile.

The characters are equally bad. I hated Catherine. Among other things, yes let's spit in the face of the Nazi when he's holding a gun, your hands are tied and he's already threatening murder and mayhem. Don't get me started on the head Nazi. Beal - meh, but not terrible. Wasif - was he a comedic sidekick? Aset - I never figured out why she didn't kill them all from the start and they could have made her a little less Goth which was no favor to her appearance. Could Ra speak any slower?

Apparently the budget wasn't big enough to have the number of Jaffa that should have been around - the temple was practically empty.

There's just too many problems to name. However, I usually reserve 1 star for movies that have something offensive. This movie was just bad and a real disappointment for what could have been given the franchise and the opportunities. Instead we get a story that basically never happened because of the memory wipe.

Putrid
Snootz1 March 2019
I give this 3 stars because I reserve 1 & 2 stars for "worse than drivel". This is simply drivel. The story is bad, the acting worse, the plot line slow and tedious. This is everything Stargate isn't. Believe the negative ratings-- this is an utter waste of time. Some franchises just don't know when to stop and call it a day.

Why oh why didn't I read the reviews first! DON'T DO IT!!!!
scubafiend21 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was so excited to see a new iteration in the Stargate franchise (and hoped it would take the bad taste left in my mouth from Universe) that I didn't bother to check for reviews before buying it on sale on Vudu. Having purchased it, I can't believe the Stargate franchise would allow such drivel to be associated with the name!

1. Seriously? Rewriting the whole story line about Earnest being the first one through the Stargate? Having Catherine go through the gate along with Nazi's? Did they watch Indiana Jones the night before starting writing and thought it was a good idea to throw them in? 2. Couldn't you find actors who can actually act? And what on earth was Connor Trineer thinking? He is a great actor but in the first hour, he is on screen very little. I turned it off at that point. 3. Couldn't you find writers who actually know something about the series? A reboot is one thing but this is just nonsense! 4. Couldn't you find set designers that could do more than put up curtains and a few set pieces?

Instead of making me happy to have more Stargate to watch, less than 10 minutes in I was beyond annoyed that I was even watching it. It started out promising, with the actual clip showing Catherine as a child at the excavation site. I had hopes that the rest would have the same production value. That promptly went away as the show dissolved into a petty soap opera.

I love the original film. I love the Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis series. I love the 2 movies that spun off from SG-1. As I mentioned, I disliked Universe mostly because it seemed like everything good about the previous series was lacking and I couldn't get invested in 99% of the characters - just didn't care if they ran out of air! NOT a good sign. Well, I kept pushing through Universe, hoping it would get better. I couldn't even force myself to do that with this.

Anyone know how to delete a purchased movie on Vudu?

Hard To Watch!
Harry_Wild23 June 2019
I am a big Stargate SG-1 fanatic and had to watch this video. I was 20 minutes into it and just had to stop watching. Everything is bad. The production was low budget with few actors and the jeep was the only vehicle in the two scenes. The script's dialogue was so bad! The costumes for the aliens are really cheapskate. Everything just felt like it was from a high school made project it seems. It is sad to watch such a low budget amateurish movie.

What a disaster!
stefan-921-97956424 September 2018
I've seen everything Stargate until end of SG Atlantis. It was fun, quirky and scifi drama comedy. Then came the ship and series went dark. And with Origin it just goes beyond dark to horrible. Tortured myself to watch it and cryed afterwards fir wasting the time.

I tried...twice!
Wassart27 March 2021
I tried to watch it, really, I did. Twice! But can't go through the first 15mn before thinking about flagellating myself in public for losing my time, TWICE!

I am stargate fan, watched all of them absolutely all of them. Who wrote this? Why, why did you do that? Why did you hire Mercedes Bryce to direct a Stargate movie? A woke move?? Congratulations, I nearly fell asleep!! This thing is far from Roland Emmrich or Jonathan Glassner's stargates...

Now I can understand why Roland Emmrich refused a reboot or a new stargate, he knew the studios are leading Hollywood into a disaster.

The greatest pile of garbage ever.
coolgit1 March 2019
Seriously all acting is a joke, none can act. Changing the characters, like Catherine into uber extreme feminist, men weak and stupid, nazi - omg, aliens - all a joke. Script is totally retarded, productions a joke. Stay away or watch it and have a blooming good laugh - whisky helps.

Shows what you can do with a tiny budget
JamesBondMI621 December 2021
Starts off as "Raiders of the Lost Ark", spends some time as "Iron Sky", and ends up seqwaying nicely into the original film. If you're going to have a Stargate marathon, then watch this first.

Dumpster fire!!!!!!
andrer-7963822 February 2019
I am currently 33 minutes and 12 seconds in which is about 18 minutes longer than the last time I remembered it watching this disaster disrespectful pile of nonsense. I have watched every single episode movie anything have you watch the cartoon I don't know where they got their storyline from but you can't go rewrite history. New sci-fi can be this bad but this being an established series this is just disrespectful to all of the actors and directors that came before this monstrosity of an attempt add a movie I pray that I'm not even religious that they never Ever ever ever get this group of people together to make another movie. Second time through 36 minutes and 28 seconds.!

It was a web series
XweAponX14 June 2019
And although I wish the quality would have been a little bit better, that's what this was. It simply wasn't supposed to be any big production. It was meant to be watched on laptops and tablets, and on those platforms, it was probably adequate.

Conor Trinneer does a great job here as professor Langton, the other actors I was not familiar with, the guy playing Brucke (Aylam Orian) was a villain with relish. Even the Goa'uld had enough of him.

People forget that they dropped Catherine's exotic accent that she had in the film for her appearances in Stargate SG-1, except for the episode "1969", when Daniel Jackson has a tete-a-tete with the middle-aged version of the character.

Due to the appearance of a young Kusuf, I have to assume that this planet is Abydos. The Gou'ald, Aset, has never been heard of. And we hear the word "harsesis", we all know what that means.

This production is more like a stage play than it is an episode of the original franchises, viewed as such I can ignore the poor production and focus on the story. I didn't see anything radically changed from the canon of the franchise, and just because we never heard about something, it doesn't mean that it never happened. We assume that in the series, Catherine never made it through the Stargate, only her boyfriend Ernest Littlefield, that we met during "the torment of Tantalus", played by Paul McGillion. He is not here, but apparently the earth side of this story takes place in Egypt rather than in a secret lab In the United States- so we wouldn't expect to see him until later in the Stargate Origins series, if they get that far. I haven't watched any of that yet, this popped up on my Amazon prime and I became interested in it.

And as I am being entertained by this, despite the lack of production, I will have to say it is not as poor as what people are saying. I am just giving it a higher rating for balance sake. Because this was not a television show or a movie, and was not supposed to be. It was what it was, because people wanted to hear more stories in the Stargate universe, which this is.

Limited Budget Does Show
thejefflewis-922285 June 2022
If you are a Stargate fan, you can skip this one. We already knew parts of this story from previous Stargate episodes. That is, we knew about a Stargate being dug up in 1928 at an Egyptian archeological site. Stargate Origins tells the story of the first accidental use of the Stargate ten years later, and a daughter trying to get her father back to Earth. You can tell the budget is small for this movie due to the limited number of sets the story was told in. I thought the Catherine character was sweet, spunky, and beautiful.

An Honest Review
generationofswine16 May 2019
In universes like Stargate, like Star Trek, like Star Wars, there is a lot that is canonical. There are a lot of things that really shouldn't be changed, and a lot of things that people need to remember in order to make the story fit with the rest of the universe.

Unfortunately, like Star Trek Discovery and the Star Wars sequel trilogy, the show kind of takes everything that is canonical and completely ignores it...which is a trope for a lot of Science Fiction these days...and one that instantly alienates the fans that invested a lot of time, money, and love into the universe.

But what is worse than that is the production values are absolute crap...and this is Stargate we're talking about, this is, like Star Trek, a universe that never exactly attempted to make very convincing alien sets.

No matter what planet they went to on the series it always looked a lot like British Columbia.

The production value of this is even worse. It looks seriously bad.

And the dialogue makes little sense, even for seasoned Stargate fans...it's just bad and out of place.

And the acting isn't much better.

So, what you have is an extremely cheap, extremely low budget, horribly written and horribly acted attempt at making a Stargate addition that, well, that ignores a lot of what is canonical in Stargate, so even the diehard fans won't like it.

Bad script, illogical, and horrible implementation
bobcozzi20 May 2019
This is the worst StarGate installment ever. Basically think about a Millennial getting in trouble today and not getting her way. That is Catherine in this movie. Every scene is like high schoolers who flunked English class trying to do improv without knowledge of the subject or storyline.

No!
john-monne21 February 2019
I will start off with Ellie Gall as Catherine.. She utterly destroyed the experience for me. It is not my intention to attack her personally, we all have qualities in life and I really suck at acting...so does she! She simply should not be in this industry. She didn't fit, her acting was really bad and her behavior was just annoying. I do not want to she her again, especially not in any Stargate productions.

Which brings me to this production. As a science fiction fan I liked this low budget movie. It was reasonable and despite of Ellie Gall I enjoyed it.

Though.. as a big time Stargate fan.. i really didn't like this for what it stands for. It stands for a REBOOT of the franchise, it stands for corrupting, changing and even destroying what has been created so far. The lore and duration of the franchise so far has been so very much successful and has such a big following that this nonsense really is not needed. Just continue with the universe as it is, there is so much that can be done with it..

Quite some people were not able to enjoy Stargate universe for example and for those the general opinion is that it was too slow, to emotional to dramatic. With some simple and fun changes that can be dealt with! Re-open that extremely cool concept, make it a bit more faster, keeps some drama but keep it lighter but the keep the rich lore of the existing universe intact! The ancients and the journey through the universe can be written so well. Anyhow, that is just my 2 cents on the subject.

No REBOOT!

Annoyed with the Characters.
theazide18 April 2019
For about 30 minutes i though it wasnt bad, not great but not bad. But after the main trio bickered for the 4th time in 10 minutes, I became irritated with the character writing, and the rather basic acting. I made it another 20 minutes and then decided to stop, If you enjoy this more power to you, but it is not a well done movie.

Low budget movie and mediocre casting. Not worth buying IMHO. Ok story though Cathrine Langford never went through the gate. Also new that they could stars when traveling through. Thought they dematerialized 🤥

Not as bad as some think
potm-127-2953921 February 2019
It is true that this is not as good as the original film or SG1. Atlantis was top quality and in my opinion so was Universe.

But I love Stargate and so enjoyed this. I hope that more are made, and with that comes higher quality. If you don't sit down to watch this expecting Jack O'Neill and Sam Carter then you might enjoy it too.

If you are a Stargate fan DO NOT WATCH THIS DRIVEL. It in no way follows SG canon and both the writing and acting are terrible. For the love of anything holy avoid it at all costs. I really wish you could give a negative star rating.

Not a movie, a web series!
teryl_brat4230 May 2019
All these people reviewing this like it was meant to be a movie are tanking the ratings. It was a web series. Budget was minescule. Actors were mostly unknowns. It was rough around the edges because of that. As a web series, though, it was superb! They released it on Amazon Prime as a 1hr 44min movie format so people wouldn't have to click through a bunch of 8-10min episodes.

I gave it an 8 to support the franchise and the team that worked hard on this WEB SERIES. I loved all the tiny details that a true fan would recognize as something from the original film or tv franchise. It was actually exceptionally well done given the budget and time constraints. Don't listen to the haters who have no idea what this franchise is even about. If this is their first foray into this franchise, they started in the wrong place.

Based on the 90s movie, not on the SG-1 tv show
jnmonsanto6 March 2022
Although there may be some references to concepts used in the tv-show, this one opens with a sequence taken from the 90s movie with Kurt Russel. Also, the way the stargate looks, how it opens and how Catherine interacts with it is a reference to the 90s movie when Daniel Jackson first goes through. Thus, the Catherine from that movie might as well been through this, but never deciphering the meaning of the symbols on the gate (among other aspects of it) -- and that could explain why in the 90s movie the gate was already set up with power and computers, and why they already expected it to be a gate (which the text Jackson reads when he gets there confirms).

An "origins" series would be great for the franchise, but not this.
mindy609 July 2019
I've seen everything Stargate and have loved and enjoyed all of it. Until now. It is hard to believe that the creators (as well as all the past producers, writers, and actors) of the Stargate franchise would have approved and released this work. The quality is very poor. If they wanted to do an origins series, why such an obviously low budget? Why not do it right? It's painful! I cannot recommend this movie. :(

Remember when the sluggish, plus-sized Britney Spears was making her "comeback?"
omp-744-58855822 February 2019
...and her "dancing" was mostly just standing in the same spot, turning left and right? If you really tried, you could pretend she was dancing and you'd have enjoyed the show.

Well, Stargate Origins: Catherine is exactly the same. If you pretend the Stargate series and movies never existed and pretended Catherine's actions are even remotely realistic (go Feminism!), and pretend the "acting" and script is any good, then you might like it.
