Safe to assume the ongoing atrocities in Gaza will engender cinema, fiction and documentary alike, further into the future than we can imagine. Decades of aggression have yielded, in just this last year, the TIFF selection Alam and Berlinale winner No Other Land; if what absurd, horrific controversy the latter quickly engendered is any indication, the industry faces many moments of reckoning. It remains to be seen what, if any, attention comes from Lyd, a “sci-fi documentary” that examines the eponymous city––once Palestinian, now Israeli, and since 1948 a site of considerable exile and strife––from its imagined perspective. Ahead of an April 26 engagement that starts at New York’s Firehouse Cinema, we’re pleased to exclusively debut the trailer.
Here’s the synopsis for Rami Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland’s film: “Lyd is a speculative feature-length documentary that follows the rise and fall of Lyd – a 5,000-year-old metropolis...

Strand Releasing has acquired North American rights to Dag Johan Haugerud’s “Sex” following its premiere in the Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival.
The movie, which is represented in international markets by M-Appeal, is the first part of Haugerud‘s “Sex Dreams Love,” an exploration of sexuality and gender roles.
The film, the first part of the “Sex Dreams Love” trilogy by Norway’s Dag Johan Haugerud, has garnered attention for its thought-provoking exploration of sexuality and gender roles.
“Sex” follows two men in heterosexual marriages, who have an unexpected experience that challenges them to reconsider their understanding of sexuality, gender and identity. One has a sexual encounter with another man, without considering it either as an expression of homosexuality or infidelity and discusses it with his wife afterwards. The other finds himself in nocturnal dreams where he is seen as a woman, stirring confusion and leading him...

The 5th edition of Podes, the Portuguese podcast festival, took place on 18 November in Lisbon, Portugal. The event was focused on podcasters and podcasting, marking a shift from previous editions where the biggest sessions were podcast liveshows. As such, Podes offered capacity-building workshops and panel debates on growth, technology and the state of Portuguese podcasting in 2023, and invited all podcasters to attend a podcasting town hall meeting to openly discuss the state of affairs, what can be done in the future and what role should a podcasting festival have in a growing industry.
The festival ended with a live ceremony that celebrated Portuguese podcasts and the people who make them.
The awards process started in September, when a free registration was open for all podcasts. At the same time, open submission was available for the People’s choice award, which ran until 31 October. After registration was closed, shortlists were created for each category,...

For the second September in a row, TikTok is pulling out all the stops to celebrate Latin Heritage Month. Among other initiatives, the video app has released a new Visionary Voices list that highlights several exemplary Latin creators.
As with previous Visionary Voices lists, TikTok has split its Latin Heritage Month VIPs into several categories. The honor roll includes small businesses like Pinole Blue, top creators like comedian Jesus Nalgas, and “industry disruptors” like Myke Towers. Though he’s best known for his music, Towers has emerged as a short-form innovator by uploading viral clips set to his songs.
The Visionary Voices initiative grew out of a dinner series launched by TikTok. One of those dinners brought Latin creators together during last year’s Heritage Month. Other Visionary Voices lists have tied into other month-long cultural happenings, such as Black History Month and Aapi Heritage Month.

Gayle Hunnicutt, the Texas-born actor known for 1969’s “Marlowe” and her role as Vanessa Beaumont in “Dallas,” died on Aug. 31 in London, according to The Times of London. She was 80.
Hunnicutt played Vanessa Beaumont, an English aristocrat who shares an illegitimate son with Larry Hagman’s J.R. Ewing, in the final three seasons of “Dallas” from 1989 to 1991.
Born on Feb. 6, 1943, in Fort Worth, Texas, Hunnicutt made her television debut in 1966 on the NBC sitcom “Mister Roberts.” She guested on several series in the ’60s, including “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Hey Landlord,” “Love on a Rooftop” and “Get Smart.”
On the film side, Hunnicutt starred opposite James Garner in the 1969 neo-noir crime film “Marlowe,” in which she played television star Mavis Wald. Gayle Hunnicutt, whose best-known work came as Vanessa Beaumont, the mother of J.R. Ewing’s illegitimate son, in the final three seasons of Dallas, has died per multiple U.K. reports. Hunnicutt died last Thursday at a hospital in London, according to her ex-husband Simon Jenkins. She was 80 years old.
That Hunnicutt would find fame playing Vanessa Beaumont, a Brit, on a TV show called Dallas was a bit ironic for a woman born in Fort Worth. But it was entirely sensible given that the actress spent much of her career in British TV and movies, even marrying the be-knighted Jenkins before returning to work in the U.S.
Her TV career began with a role on the shortlived small-screen adaptation of Mister Roberts and included roles on The Beverly Hillbillies, Get Smart and in Marlowe opposite James Garner.

For those who’ve seen Joshua Ray Walker perform, they know his voice can alternately hush and rouse a crowd. (Catch him perform “Voices” if you ever get the chance and be amazed.) The Texas songwriter delivers one of his most dynamic recorded takes on “Cuz I Love You” — a Lizzo cover that announces his new album What Is It Even?.
The rendition arrives with a music video that finds Walker flirting with gender norms. What is it even? How about a vocalist confident in who he is as an artist.

When it came time to title his 2018 documentary about The Kronos Quartet, director Sam Green chose A Thousand Thoughts. Michael Stipe, Chvrches, and Coldplay are just a few of over 60 artists who’ve contributed to the 2023 iteration of EarthPercent’s annual Earth Day compilation album. Proceeds will benefit the Brian Eno-founded charity’s grant giving program, which directly benefits organizations fighting the ongoing climate crisis.
Stipe — a frequent eco-advocate — contributes the track “Give Me a Hand,” a moody art-pop number featuring guest vocals from folk singer and disability advocate Gaelynn Lea. Meanwhile, Chvrches reunite with their pal Robert Smith of The Cure for a rendition of their song “How Not to Drown,” recorded live at the Brixton Academy. Coldplay tap H.E.R. for another live track, this one being their ballad “Let Somebody Go” at the River Plate.
Also featured on the compilation are Eno, Dry Cleaning, dodie, Bring Me the Horizon, Julia Holter, Mystery Jets, and many more. Stream the album via Bandcamp below.

Dina Duma’s upcoming feature “Skateboarding Is Not for Girls” turned heads at Sarajevo Film Festival’s industry section CineLink this year. The story about a Romani Muslim girl from Skopje, Adela, trying to save her sister from being sold to the bridal market and dreaming of joining a group of female skaters, received the Film Center Serbia and the Female Voices awards. The latter, sponsored by Slovenian Film Center, aims to support and promote female voices from the Southeast European film industry.

Based on what we’re hearing from Disney, the seventh and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, now on Disney Plus, will be with us on February 17th, 2020. One of the more challenging aspects of the animated series, though, is that you won’t get a chronological experience by just following the released episode order. Thankfully, then, we now have a correct viewing order courtesy of the official Star Wars site, which tells us all you need to know to catch up on The Clone Wars before its return.
The Clone Wars bridges the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, providing a significant level of detail for anyone wondering what was going on in between the two prequel movies. When aired, episodes could often be bundled together as arcs, linked by one-off episodes that might explore a different part of the galaxy adjacent...
