The phenomenon isn’t uncommon in the streaming era, where movies and shows often find renewed success long after their initial release. Wahlberg’s Patriots Day also experienced this resurgence during the Fourth of July weekend in 2020 when its themes of heroism and resilience struck a chord with viewers.

A Game of Thrones star joins Mark Wahlberg in the sequel to Apple TV+'s action-comedy with a 27% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Like many another big screen star, Wahlberg in recent years has found as much work in streaming projects as in films intended for theaters. His most recent streaming release, the Netflix movie The Union, teamed him with Halle Berry in a romantic spy thriller, but that’s not the only small-screen feature Wahlberg has headlined in the past few years.

2020 saw Wahlberg’s first Netflix release, the action-comedy Spenser Confidential. 2021’s Wahlberg-starring sci-fi movie Infinite was originally intended as a theatrical release, but a combination of Covid delays and bad reviews caused it to be dumped on Paramount+. This makes it the first film franchise to chart two films on the most popular list simultaneously, and it’s the third Agbo film on the list overall.

So far, Extraction 2 has racked up 129.3M views, and it still has about 25 days of viewing left in its premiere measurement window. The first installment sits at 135.7M views for its entire 91-day window, which means there’s a strong possibility that the sequel could end up outranking the original when all is said and done.

Lionsgate has nabbed global distribution for “Flight Risk,” an action-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Mel Gibson. This will mark the first film Gibson has directed since his blockbuster ($175 million on a $40 million budget) and Oscar-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2016. The mini-major will be launching the project, featuring Wahlberg as a pilot transporting a dangerous criminal for trial, at Cannes.

Malcolm D. Lee’s Blackmaled Productions has bolstered its executive ranks by naming Emmy-nominated producer Dominique Telson as executive VP of film and television and announcing three new key hires and promotions within the company.

Blackmaled’s new hires include Michael Scott Allen as the VP of television and Giselle Johnson as director of film. Winston Duke, who is back as fearsome warrior M’Baku in next week’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has joined Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy, Universal’s big screen take on the 1980s adventure television series.

Bullet Train director David Leitch is helming the action extravaganza, which already has Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Stephanie Hsu rolling in the passenger seat.

Production began this week in Australia.

In a switch from the original 1980s show that starred Lee Majors, the story doesn’t focus on a stuntman with a side hustle as a bounty hunter. Instead, the script by Drew Pearce focuses on a battered and past-his-prime stuntman (Gosling) who finds himself back on a movie with the star for whom he doubled long ago and who replaced him. The wrinkle, however, is that the star has gone missing.

Chris Hemsworth returns as black market mercenary Tyler Rake in the sequel to his action hit “Extraction” at Netflix, and on Saturday, the streamer dropped a behind-the-scenes featurette that hints the follow-up might be just as violent and intense as the original.

The sequel doesn’t have a release date just yet, but the end of the featurette teases the film is coming in 2023.

The original’s director, Sam Hargrave, is also back on board for “Extraction 2,” looking to top himself after delivering an impressive 11-minute unbroken take in the first film.

Exclusive: Iliza Shlesinger’s upcoming Netflix comedy special now has a title and a premiere date. Titled Hot Forever, Shlesinger’s 6th(!) Netflix special, will launch globally on October 11.

In the special, filmed in July at the Connor Playhouse in Cleveland, Shlesinger touches on “topics ranging from every girl’s ugly bra to how all adult men need to own a box spring,” according to Netflix.

“I’m so incredibly proud of this special,” said Shlesinger. “It’s bold, it’s real – you’ll never look at a bra the same way again…. Also, my outfit is awesome.”

With Hot Forever, Shlesinger ties Dave Chappelle for the most Netflix comedy specials at six. Her previous Netflix specials include Unveiled (2019), Elder Millennial (2018), Confirmed Kills (2016), Freezing Hot (2015) and War Paint (2013).

UFC fighter Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone stars in the upcoming zombie film Project Legion, which is set to receive a theatrical release on October 7th, with an Apple TV release following just four days later on October 11th. With those dates just a few weeks away, a trailer for Project Legion has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Lance Kawas (Good Thief) directed Project Legion from a screenplay he crafted with John Sullivan, Michael Pizzimenti, and James Raptoplous. Apparently they put together quite an epic, because Apple has the movie listed with a running time of 2 hours and 38 minutes. The story told over those 158 minutes has the following synopsis:

Feral creatures that prey on humans have descended upon the city. A furious fight for survival begins as the outside world descends into chaos and a former Marine (UFC superstar Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone), barricaded inside his apartment, prepares to come out fighting.

“Jurassic World Dominion” and “The Intouchables” star Omar Sy has been tapped to lead John Woo’s reimagining of his 1989 film “The Killers” for Universal Pictures.

The crime action thriller followed a top-tier mob assassin named Jeffrey, who decides to retire after he accidentally blinds a nightclub singer who gets caught in the crossfire of one of his hit jobs. Before quitting his beloved profession, he takes one last job to pay for her sight-restoring operation, only to be double-crossed. He then teams up with a rogue police officer to set things straight.

Woo, the auteur director of movies like “Face/Off,” “Red Cliff” and “A Better Tomorrow,” will also produce the reboot. Writing partners Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell (“10 Cloverfield Lane”), along with as Eran Creevy (“Welcome to the Punch,” “Collide”) and Brian Helgeland (“42,” “Legend,” “Spenser Confidential”) wrote the screenplay.

Netflix will on September 22 release its long-gestating drama about the real-life rescue of 12 boys and an adult who were trapped in a cave in northern Thailand. Thai Cave Rescue will show how the Wild Boars soccer team’s afternoon exploring with their 25-year-old coach went disastrously wrong when heavy rain trapped them inside, leading to a massive international recovery mission that engrossed the world.

Netflix partnered with filmmakers across Thailand and beyond to create the six-episode series, which is filmed entirely in the Asian nation, after jointly acquiring rights to the story with Sk Global Entertainment back in 2019. The drama unfolds through the perspectives of the boys at the center of the rescue.

Created by Michael Russell Gunn and Dana Ledoux Miller, the limited series is directed by Thailand’s Baz Poonpiriya and U.S. director Kevin Tancharoen. Both also serve as executive producers alongside Jon M. Chu and Lance Johnson for Electric Somewhere; John Penotti (Crazy Rich Asians) for Sk Global Entertainment; John Logan Pierson.

Cast includes Papangkorn “Beam” Lerkchaleampote as Coach Eak, Thaneth “Ek” Warakulnukroh as Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, and Urassaya “Yaya” Sperbund and Manatsanun “Donut” Phanlerdwongsakul as Kelly and Pim — fictional representatives of the real-world hydraulic engineers and park rangers that made the incredible rescue possible. Supakorn “Tok” Kitsuwan is former Navy Seal diver Saman “Ja Sam” Gunan, and Bloom Varin plays army doctor Colonel Bhak Loharjun.

The boys are played by 12 young local actors, with filming taking place at the homes of the real boys and Tham Luang, where they were trapped, itself.

As with the real mission, Thai Cave Rescue international actors to portray key contributors in this rescue, including Nicholas Bell as Vern Unsworth, Nicholas Farnell as John Volanthen, Christopher Stollery as Rick Stanton, Rodger Corser as Dr. Richard “Harry” Harris, and Damon Herriman as Dr. Craig Challen.

“Thai Cave Rescue is the first opportunity for audiences worldwide to see the Tham Luang story in a new and more emotional light — centering the perspectives of the 12 Wild Boars, Coach Eak, and heroes like Saman ‘Ja Sam’ Gunan, whose lives beyond the operation remain largely outside the public spotlight,” said Poonpiriya.

Tancharoen added: “As a Thai American, I feel so incredibly fortunate to help tell this story through the lens and soul of the Thaipeople. I wanted to bring my experience of telling big superhero stories to the real world. One where real-life superheroes worked together for a common cause regardless of where they were from, and the only superpowers are the perseverance of the human spirit and what we can accomplish when we work together.”

Ron Howard and MGM’s Thai cave rescue film Thirteen Lives is set for its theatrical debut on Friday (July 29). Read Todd McCarthy’s review here. The story was also told in Nat Geo documentary The Rescue last year and in indie film The Cave back in 2019.

Netflix has set a Sept. 22 release date for “Thai Cave Rescue,” its six-part mini series about the dramatic events of July 2018 when 12 boys and their football coach were trapped in flooded limestone caves near Chiang Rai.

Their plight sparked an unprecedented international rescue effort that ended with the loss of just one life and a flurry of film and TV productions.

The Netflix series is at least the fourth on-screen retelling of the rescue tale and will follow two other efforts releasing over the next weeks. Netflix touts its series as “the most authentic and expansive retelling yet.”

First into the market, in 2019, was “The Cave,” by Thai-British director-producer Tom Waller, which mixed reconstructions and news footage. It gave prominent position to Europe-based rescue diver Jim Warny playing himself. UFC fighters Keith Jardine and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone are teaming on a short film that will also mark Jardine’s directorial debut.

The short is titled “El Paso 11:55.” Brendan Fehr stars in the film along with Jardine, Cerrone, and Tait Fletcher. In addition to directing and starring, Jardine also serves as writer. It is set to screen at the LA Shorts International Film Festival on July 26 as part of Program 28.

“I’m humbled by all the heat that’s been surrounding this short,” Jardine said. “Being selected by this prestigious festival is a great affirmation for all the hard work I’ve put in transitioning from professional fighter to actor, and now writer/director. Especially now, as we are preparing to turn ‘El Paso’ into a full-length feature.”

McG, who has been busy producing movies for Netflix, returned to broadcast television this season with three pilots on three different networks for his Wonderland Sound and Vision banner, True Lies, based on James Cameron’s 1994 movie, on CBS; Not Dead Yet starring Gina Rodriguez on ABC; and the Jensen Ackles-produced Supernatural prequel The Winchesters on the CW. Over the last couple of days, all three were picked up to series. Additionally, BET+ just picked up Wonderland’s series Average Joe, created by Robb Cullen and starring Deon Cole.

The slate of four series on the air harkens back to Wonderland’s most prolific time in television a decade ago when the company also had four series with Supernatural, Nikita, Chuck and Human Target. The company’s executive team includes McG’s longtime partner, Mary Viola, who serves as President, and EVP Corey Marsh.

Rlje Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, and Shudder, AMC Networks’ streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, have acquired the North American rights to the horror film, The Reef: Stalked. The film will be released In Theaters, on Digital/VOD and streaming on Shudder on July 29, 2022.

Written and directed by Andrew Traucki (Black Water) as a follow up to his 2010 film, The Reef, The Reef: Stalked stars Teressa Liane (“The Vampire Diaries”), Ann Truong (“Cowboy Bebop”), Saskia Archer (Boshack), Kate Lister (“Clickbait”) and Tim Ross (“Wonderland”).

Channel 4 Puts 1,000 Hours Of Shows On YouTube

British broadcaster Channel 4 has signed a deal with YouTube to put 1,000 hours of programming on the Google-owned streaming platform. The agreement expands on an existing partnership between the companies and will allow Channel 4 to sell its own advertising around the show — a first-of-its-kind deal in the UK and Europe. Shows will begin rolling out this month and include 8 Out Of 10 Cats; Location, Location, Location; Nikki Grahame: Who Is She?, Sas: Who Dares Wins and The Dog House. Selected titles will be made available 30 days after their first broadcast on Channel 4 or younger sibling network E4. Channel 4 has been following a five-year ‘Future 4’ strategy to supercharge digital revenues, and its management believes today’s deal represents a “major step” in that process.
