Star Trek fans love The Doctor, portrayed by Robert Picardo for seven seasons of Voyager, as well as in other projects, including Star Trek: The Experience and, more recently, the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. He’s also on board as the holographic medic in the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series. Fans will also remember that Picardo played Lewis Zimmerman, the scientist who created The Doctor -- aka the Emergency Medical Hologram -- in three episodes of Voyager and the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine hour “Doctor Bashir, I Presume.”
Somewhat lost to the passage of time is the fact that The Doctor was originally going to be called Doc Zimmerman. Memory Alpha points out that that the character was referred to as Doc Zimmerman “in the pre-production of Voyager and the scripts which were written for Voyager Season 1.” Further, the site mentions that both a British advertisement and...

Apple TV+ is adding to its comedy roster with a series starring Tatiana Maslany.
The Emmy winner will topline a comedic thriller titled Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. The show comes from creator David J. Rosen (Apple’s Sugar, Prime Video’s Hunters), who will also serve as showrunner. David Gordon Green is set to direct and will be an executive producer.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is described as a darkly comic thriller about a newly divorced mom (Maslany) who falls down a dangerous rabbit hole of blackmail, murder and youth soccer. Apple Studios and Counterpart Studios are producing the 10-episode, half-hour series. Rosen and Green will executive produce with Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Films, who developed the show under their first-look deal with Apple TV+, and Bard Dorros of Anonymous Content.
Maslany currently stars in horror feature The Monkey, which opened in second place at the domestic box office last week.

Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek: The Original Series in 1966. Roddenberry’s vision for Tos was a space travel exploration in the 23rd Century for a society of planets seeking utopian ideals of the United Federation of Planets. Ufp was founded on the principles of peace, unity, diversity, and evolutionary autonomy expressed in a prime directive.
George Lucas created the original Star Wars movies which premiered in 1977. Lucas' vision for Star Wars was based on a classic good versus evil premise that he found intriguing, similar to the 1950s Flash Gordon series, Spaghetti Westerns (such as "A Fistful of Dollars"), and Akira Kurosawa's iconic Samurai sagas.
Although there is an 11-year difference between when Tos aired and when Star Wars premiered -both are sci-fi/fantasy adventures set in a fictional future timeline where space travel, aliens, and inhabited planets are commonplace in the galaxy. However, Trekkies and Star Wars fans...

From Ghostface to a paranormal DJ? Deadline reports that the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) are teaming up with Paul Giamatti for a biopic about the late Art Bell. Best known as the founder and original host of Coast to Coast Am, Bell would field unscreened calls from all sorts of people, listening to stories of alien abduction, conspiracy theories, strange creatures, and just about everything you could imagine.
According to Deadline, several studios, including Universal, Amazon, and Warner Bros., are bidding on the Art Bell biopic. Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves are writing the script. This is a bit of a different project from the team that has given us Ready or Not, Abigail, and two Scream movies, but it has the potential to be quite interesting. Plus, I could watch Paul Giamatti do just about anything.

Star Trek: Picard was a bit of an up-and-down mess over its three-season run. A turnstile of showrunners, tonal shifts between seasons, and a blatant disregard for its own conceptual premise all led to the show being a mixed bag at best, or a failure at worst. The lone idea that came out of the series was one involving a potential spinoff, dubbed with love as 'Star Trek: Legacy'.
The show would follow Jean-Luc Picard's son, some of the new cast members from the third season of Picard and a few returning legacy characters, namely Seven of Nine. It was a solid idea when it was pitched, and even though the final Picard showrunner, Terry Matalas, really wanted to make the show, Paramount basically buried the project.

For better or worse, Star Trek: Section 31 is officially in the books. The final verdict? Maybe the worst piece of property Star Trek has ever produced. It's the truth, as fans, both old and new alike, have rejected this film. Even divisive series like Star Trek: Discovery have a strong, but small, fandom. There are people who will argue in defense of that series.
They'll cite season three as a high point, and with that, one more positive than Section 31 will ever have. That's because there's very little if anything at all redeeming about the film. At least on screen. To such a degree that, while it has some who liked it, the film is universally panned. There's a fan or two across the board who like it, but there isn't a sizeable community like you'd see for Discovery.
So, thankfully, the film is done and no sequel should ever be made.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will likely be the last show of its kind. An animated, comedy, science fiction series, that caters almost exclusively to a niche audience? Yeah, we're not seeing that again anytime soon. The circumstances for its existence will never be replicated.
Paramount+ needed dynamic content that catered to multiple types of people and only had a fininte amount of franchises to pull from. Seeing this was at a time when the money was flowing freely from banks and investors, Paramount took the money in order to build up Paramount+.
So they greenlit shows, regardless of how much interest or money they drew. They needed original content to compete with other services, and with the influx of money coming in to do just that, Paramount got bold and took risks.
Now, those same investors want their money back. This isn't exclusively a Paramount issue, as most streaming services...

Star Trek has two TV series guaranteed for the next two years, and yet it feels like the franchise is on the wane. Star Trek television was resurrected by Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, which was the first new Star Trek TV series in 12 years after Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled in 2005. Discovery's success ushered in an expansive Star Trek on Paramount+ streaming franchise, which came to boast Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Although there have been 13 Star Trek theatrical movies - and the first Star Trek made-for-streaming movie, Star Trek: Section 31, premieres January 24 on Paramount+ - Star Trek has always been fundamentally a TV franchise. Star Trek is at its best on television, which allows for the long-form storytelling needed to explore complex moral quandaries and Star Trek's massive pantheon of beloved characters.

Star Trek: Section 31 certainly looks like a departure for the long-running franchise, and one star is “terrified” of how the fans will react.
Robert Kazinsky, who plays Zeph in the streaming movie, expressed his concerns while speaking with SFX Magazine. “I’m terrified of how it’s going to be received, because it’s not the Trek people want,” he said. “The Trek that people want, the Trek that we all want, is just 1,000 more episodes of [The Next Generation]. Everyone’s always furious that they’re not getting more Tng, whilst at the same time, when Tng came out, everybody hated it.“
Kazinsky continued, “So this is going to come along and it’s not going to feel like any Trek that they’ve ever seen. My fear was that it might not feel like Trek at all. So for you to tell me that it still...

WWE star Becky Lynch announced that she is joining Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, 25 years after Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson beat "Big Time Becks" to Star Trek. The next Star Trek series will take place in the 32nd century and follow the events of Star Trek Discovery. In addition to Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's main cast, the new show features appearances from Star Trek: Discovery characters and Robert Picardo's The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager.
Currently filming two back-to-back seasons in Toronto, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is led by Academy Award winner Holly Hunter as the chancellor of Starfleet Academy, and Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti as season 1's recurring villain. Becky Lynch, whose real name is Rebecca Quin, will join their ranks as a part of the "bridge crew" for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. It's just about time we put 2024 to bed. In a matter of days from when this post goes live, 2025 will be here, and with that, the hope of a new year. For Star Trek, 2024 was an up-and-down year. It did see a new show get announced; Star Trek: Starfleet Academy but two shows ended, with a third in limbo. A fourth show, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds saw all of its momentum halted by a significant delay, while the film side of things is a mess.
The theatrical side of the conversation remains in limbo over Star Trek 4, while the made-for-steaming side is not really doing well with the lead-up to Star Trek: Section 31. A film that doesn't feel or look like a Star Trek film in any way.
Yet, 2025 could help the franchise bounce back. That's why we have a few things we'd like to see happen in...

Star Trek is expected to have a quiet 2025. It's only natural, after all, 2024 saw Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Lower Decks all release new seasons of their show. For Discovery and Lower Decks, it was the final season. For Prodigy, their fate remains unknown.
Yet, due to the turnover at the top of Paramount, and the new principal owner entering the picture, plus uncertainty about the company's profits and available resources, the studio has been a bit lean this year. 2025 currently doesn't have a lot to offer for fandoms of various products. Warning: Spoilers For Star Trek: Lower Decks' Season 5 Finale - "The New Next Generation"
Star Trek: Lower Decks' series finale creates a multiverse problem in Star Trek canon. Lower Decks came to a close with its fifth season, which sent the USS Cerritos on a mission to investigate quantum fissures to infinite Star Trek timelines. The world of Star Trek is about to get bodyslammed. News broke this week that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was going to beam up one of the most recognizable pro wrestlers of the modern era, with the enlistment of one Becky Lynch. Lynch, real name Rebecca Quinn, has been a major face on WWE screens for almost a decade now.
The 37-year-old, super popular wrestler, announced recently that she was going to be a part of the new Star Trek show on her Instagram account (via TrekMovie.com). The move brings a major name from outside of the world of acting to Star Trek and a move that may hint at Star Trek's future home. As of right now the series is still set to appear on Paramount+.
Yet, there have been rumors for almost a year that Paramount+ may shutter their doors, or merge with another distributor.

In the last seven years, there has been a positive glut of "Star Trek" introduced into the world. Just as the Upn launched with the debut of "Star Trek: Voyager in 1995," so did the new streaming service CBS All Access launch with the debut of "Star Trek: Discovery" in 2017. This was the first "Star Trek" TV series on the airwaves since the cancelation of "Star Trek: Enterprise" in 2005, and many Trekkies were eager to see if the franchise could be restarted. An entirely new creative team had taken over "Star Trek," and they sought to update the decades-old series for a streaming audience.
"Discovery," we would later learn, was only one of many "Star Trek" projects that would debut on CBS All Access — later renamed Paramount+ — over the next few years. To keep people subscribed, Paramount produced "Short Treks." As a hook for fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation,...

Becky Lynch has joined Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which adds a global WWE superstar to its already stacked cast. Executive produced by co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is currently filming in Toronto. With a cast led by Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter and Academy Award-nominee Paul Giamatti, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has already received an early season 2 renewal on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set in the late 32nd century after the end of Star Trek: Discovery. Reopened after a century following the galactic calamity of The Burn, Starfleet Academy welcomes a new and diverse class of Starfleet hopefuls, under the guidance of Holly Hunter's Captain, who is also Starfleet Academy's Chancellor. However, a new threat to the United Federation of Planets emerges, likely tied to Paul Giamatti's recurring villain. Becky Lynch plays one of the Starfleet Officers potentially encountering this new enemy.

The Star Trek universe is continuing to expand with the announcement of a brand-new spinoff, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is already promising to be the most unique series in the franchise's decades-long history. Set in the distant 32nd century after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, Starfleet Academy will chronicle the return of the Earth's most important educational institution as it begins training its first class of new recruits in 100 years. Unlike the host of other Trek series in the past, Starfleet Academy will shake up the formula and take place exclusively on Earth.

The Man has come around to Starfleet. WWE superstar Becky Lynch has officially joined the cast of “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” on Paramount Plus.
Lynch, who has been on a 200+ day hiatus from WWE, took to X to deliver the news via video.
“You know when you’ve already been champion of the world, there’s only one place to go next, and that’s to the stars,” Lynch said. “I’m so excited to share with all of you that I’m joining ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ as part of the bridge crew. This has been the most amazing experience, acting alongside just a spectacular cast and crew, and I cannot wait for all of you to check it out when it comes out on Paramount Plus.”
The Lass-Kicker concluded her announcement with a Vulcan salute: “Live long and prosper.”

It's been almost twenty years since Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled in 2005. It's been just as long since Jolene Blalock, who played the Vulcan T'Pol on the series, played any part in a Star Trek series or movie. But she surprised us all by making a vocal appearance in Star Trek: Lower Decks' ninth episode of the season, "Fissure Quest." Though only credited as Jolene, there was no mistaking the voice of T'Pol. The tone, the inflections, everything was just perfect.
Since Blalock has been largely away from Star Trek with the exception of an appearance at 2021's Star Trek Day, her return to a character from nineteen years ago was a surprise to everyone. Undoubtedly, it, along with the return of other Star Trek characters, will send non-regular viewers of Lower Decks scrambling to watch the episode.
Blalock hasn't acted onscreen since the 2017 television movie, A Man for Every Month.

A new Star Trek show is in the works. It's called Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and it takes place about 900 years after the events of Star Trek's The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Picard. It's a spinoff show of sorts to Star Trek: Discovery, with both shows taking place in the same time period.
With such a huge time jump, you'd think the only returning characters would be from the recent seasons of Discovery after the ship jumped into the future permanently. That's not true, however. Despite the advancement in the timeline, the show will in fact bring back one character from the previous era of Star Trek.
After featuring in a starring role in Voyager and later Prodigy, Robert Picardo is set to return to Star Trek once again. He returned to the franchise after nearly 25 years with Prodigy, reprising his role from Voyager.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is wrapping up its final season and once it's over, Star Trek fans will be looking for a franchise comedy to sink their teeth into. For better or for worse. The folks at Star Trek seem to have the next idea set up, featuring Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome as lead writer.
Newsome is writing a new show that seems to be set on a tourist planet of sorts, think Risa, and will focus on the crew who manage the establishments on said planet. It seems like a fine idea and one that could have some serious legs to it if it's done well.
All that said, we haven't heard much about it since the franchise made a soft announcement about it. We've gotten a lot of headway on the the new show, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but nothing on the new comedy. This, despite the fact,...

Starfleet Academy is most likely well over a year away from making its debut on Paramount+, but the buzz around the series has been ongoing since it was announced. That only intensified with the addition of Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti and Oscar winner Holly Hunter to the cast.
We don't know much about what Giamatti's character will be up to during his short tenure on the series' first season, but in a recent Threads selfie with Giamatti, another cast member, Robert Picardo, promised the actor's turn on the series wouldn't be something we'd forget. "He is an actor’s actor and will be memorable, I assure you, as our Season 1 super-villain on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+… Stay tuned!" Picard wrote as a caption beneath the selfie. Jesse Eisenberg is already confirmed for his third directorial feature, and this time, he’s swapping dramedy for a full-on musical comedy, just in time for IndieWire’s Musicals Week.
The yet-untitled project reunites writer/director Eisenberg with Julianne Moore, who starred in his debut feature “When You Finish Saving the World.” The film will also be Eisenberg’s third with Emma Stone, Dave McCary, and Ali Herting’s Fruit Tree production banner.
Moore is set to star as a shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical, according to the logline. “Under the spell of the strong-willed and enigmatic director (Paul Giamatti), she loses herself in the role and the high-stakes world of this community theater production.”

Star Trek has the ability to bring generations together. With each new series or film, the franchise affords itself a new viewer-base, not just through marketing, but through shared experiences. So much of the Star Trek fandom is passed down from parent to child, or from one older fan to a younger one.
The franchise has been able to thrive over the years because of the shared ability to experience Star Trek with one another. The fandom has been galvanized by that concept. Yet, it's not just the fandom that benefits from the fact that the older generation passes something down to the younger generation.
Those who make the shows and films we love so much do the same thing. Starting with The Next Generation, the first in the non-William Shatner-led Star Trek properties, the previous generation has always been there to lend a hand to the newer generation.

What Do We Know About the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy? More thank you may think. The Paramount+ original series will be the latest edition of the Star Trek universe and the first sequel series of Star Trek Discovery. With casting announcements, rumors, and more, we know a lot of what is to come. So, let’s jump in!
The series is set in the 32nd Century.
The twelfth Star Trek series since Gene Roddenberry’s original CBS show debuted in 1966, Starfleet Academy is the sixth small screen entry in the franchise since the debut of Discovery in 2017. Overseen by franchise-runner Alex Kurtzman, the new series was co-created with Noga Landau, who created the four-season-long Nancy Drew series for The CW. In development since Kurtzman’s original deal with CBS back in 2018, the series has gone through many iterations and timelines before settling on the future setting used since Discovery’s third season.

The Star Trek Universe is no stranger to star-power. The same franchise that helped William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy become pop-culture phenomenons also enhanced the careers of legends such as Sir Patrick Stewart and Chris Pine (in the Kelvin Timeline movies). It's also now spotlighting veterans of this generation such as Sonequa Martin-Green on Star Trek: Discovery and Anson Mount in spinoff series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The franchise appeals to people of all ages and one of the many (countless!) reasons for that is that it has been led by stars from different generations.
One of the biggest franchises of today is undoubtedly the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Debuting in 2008 with Iron Man, it enhanced the careers of Robert Downey Jr. Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo, while also launching the Hollywood careers of the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. Robert Picardo is enjoying a major return to form these days. The 71-year-old actor is back with the franchise after two-plus decades away. He'll make his live-action return to the franchise with the expected 2026 debut of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, reprising his role of The Doctor, once again. It's a role that he's awfully familiar with, having played the character for nearly 200 episodes.
He appeared in 164 episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, and 17 more episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy. The latter of which was his first return to the franchise since Voyager ended in 2001. Though, with Prodigy and unlike Starfleet Academy, this wasn't live action. Instead, he returned to Star Trek to perform a voice role for the first time in years.
Prior to Prodigy, the last time he leant his voice to the franchise was for Star Trek Online in 2014.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a series that has a ton of potential behind it. Featuring major names like Holly Hunter, and Paul Giamatti and returning names from Star Trek like Tig Notaro, Oded Fehr, and even Robert Picardo, the show has a ton of reasons to be excited. It's our first real look into the life and times of a Starfleet Cadet and set against the backdrop of a rebuilding federation, it seems very interesting.
Plus, now there's a renewed focus for Star Trek to promote a more optimistic version of the Federation and the future (Section 31 notwithstanding), so it's likely the showrunners for the show will follow Strange New Worlds' presentation more than not. Coupled that with the next era of Star Trek actors and actresses and you have yourself one heck of a series.
At least in theory. We're never sure if anything is going to be good or bad,...

While filming in Toronto, Picardo, who will return as the holographic Doctor from ‘Star Trek: Voyager,’ mentioned that the show is expected to premiere in early 2026.
During the interview, Picardo couldn’t share many details about the new series due to a strict NDA.
However, he did express his joy in reprising his iconic role, a character he originally portrayed starting in 1995.
He also shared a fun tidbit about his initial audition for a different role on ‘Voyager,’ which led to his casting as the Doctor.
‘Starfleet Academy’ is set in the 32nd century and follows the reopening of the academy after a catastrophic event known as The Burn.
The series will feature new faces like Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandro Rosta as students.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's most exciting legacy character is The Doctor (Robert Picardo) from Star Trek: Voyager. Currently in production, Starfleet Academy is the next Star Trek series targeted for a 2026 premiere on Paramount+. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Starfleet Academy is a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery set in the late 32nd century. Encouragingly, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has already been renewed for season 2 by Paramount+, which will film back-to-back with season 1.

Robert Picardo will reprise his Star Trek: Voyager role in the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but the actor may not actually be playing the most famous version of the Emh Mk I. Picardo was a major part of the Star Trek: Voyager cast throughout the show's run, and the recent resurgence of his character speaks volumes about how beloved the USS Voyager's nameless Doctor was and still is. After a recent comeback as the Doctor as part of the Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 cast, his legend continues to grow beyond the show where the character debuted.
The first version of the Emergency Medical Hologram took its physical appearance and abrasive personality from Doctor Lewis Zimmerman, who was also portrayed by Picardo. Some people are just defined by the genre they perform in. Scott Bakula and William Shatner fit that description to a "T." They're synonymous with the world of sci-fi, and they're not the only ones. Famous names like Sigourney Weaver, Mark Hamil, and others have the careers they do, in part, due to their appreciation for sci-fi.
Another name that belongs with the Bakula's of the world is that of Katee Sackhoff. Most known recently for Star Wars, where she played Bo-Katan Kryze, she rose to fame with her involvement with the 2004 remake of Battlestar Galactica.
She played a gender-swapped version of Starbuck, now known as Kara Thrace (previously just Starbuck). She added depth, intrigue and uniquness to the role that the original character lacked. Being a byproduct of the 1970s, all the original Starbuck did was smoke, womanize and fight Cylons. Thanks to Sackhoff, the new Starbuck was a much deeper character.

Robert Picardo has made a return as The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager not only on Star Trek: Prodigy, but he's one of the main characters for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the newest series coming from Paramount+. Should Prodigy get picked up for a third season, there's no reason to believe that The Doctor won't still be part of the team. Not that fans are complaining. We'd missed the acerbic wit of the Emergency Medical Hologram and were thrilled to see him in the first look for season two of Prodigy, which is available on Netlix.
Had Picardo not made his way to Prodigy, though, there was another option awaiting him as Mike McMahan, the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, had every intention of bringing the doctor aboard the Cerritos to tutor Tendi, according to an interview he gave to Trekmovie. Star Trek: Lower Decks is set to close out its run on Oct. 24, 2024, as the show premiers its fifth and final season. Airing on Paramount+, the final 10 episodes will bring a close to the show's run. While it's had a good run for a modern-era Nu Trek show, fans are still sad to see it go.
Whether you're sad to see it go, happy you got it, or a little bit of both, we have four things you should remember as he heads into the final stretch.
This is the final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks

When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wrapped up their second season, they were in the middle of their own unwinnable scenario. The Gorn had captured members of the Federation, and the U.S.S. Enterprise was given the order to withdraw from the conflict. Fans were left on bated breath as Captain Christopher Pike stood with an uncertain expression on his face, lost in a whirlwind of thought.
Obviously, the heroes would win the day, it's Star Trek after all, but the how is the question. Well, at New York Comic Con, we got a hint at how things may shake out when Star Trek premiered the first look at the show's third season.
In the snippet, which is roughly three minutes long, we see Pike snap out of his uncertainty and put together a plan to save his fellow Federation cohorts thanks to help from his crew. The scene...

Marvel fans will recognize Tatiana Maslany from her lead role as Jennifer Walters (aka She-Hulk) in Marvel Studios' She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, but the Canadian actress's breakout role was in Orphan Black. Star Trek is set to debut a new show in either late 2025 or early 2026. The show is called Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and will not only feature a young cast of newcomers, but will be tentpoled around series lead Holly Hunter and main villain Paul Giamatti. They'll also feature returning stars like Oded Fehr, Robert Picardo and Tig Notaro.
It's set in the rebuilt Starfleet Academy of the 32nd century, not long after the events of Star Trek: Discovery came to a close. It's a continuation of that story, in a way and more characters from Discovery may make cameos in the Academy series. So there's potential for characters to keep crossing over.
It has the potential to be a fun and entertaining show, even if it's marketed to the CW/Teen demographic. Still, potential is one thing, proof of concept is another. We have no idea if Starfleet Academy is going to be good.
