In Memoriam: Norm! ‘Cheers’ to Chicago-Born George Wendt
Image
Chicago – He was America’s favorite barfly. For 11 TV seasons, George Wendt shuffled into the “Cheers” saloon in Boston to a hale and hearty chorus of “Norm!” … a traditional greeting before his character Norm Peterson took to the barstool. Chicago born-and-bred Wendt passed away on May 20th, 2025, in Los Angeles. He was 76.

George Robert Wendt Jr. was born in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago, and came back to the city after college to perform at The Second City. After TV guest roles on “Mash,” “Taxi” and “Soap,” Wendt got his first regular role on the short-lived “Making the Grade” (1982). That show’s quick cancellation allowed Wendt to land his most famous role, and “Cheers” premiered in September of 1982.

Cannes Jury President Juliette Binoche On Trump’s Movie & TV Tariffs: “He’s Fighting To Save America And To Save His Ass”
Image
“I understand that Trump is trying to protect.”

Such was Cannes Film Festival jury president Juliette Binoche’s answer to being grilled about the topic of now: Donald Trump’s potential tariffs on film and TV imports to the U.S.

“For us, we have a strong community of filmmaking on our continent in Europe,” she told reporters. “I don’t know what to say — I can see that he’s fighting to save America and to save his ass.”

But for the most part when it comes to Trump’s consideration of film and TV tariffs for productions shot outside the U.S., the Oscar-winning star of The English Patient admits, “I’m not acceptable to answer that.”

Jeremy Strong, who starred as Trump mentor Roy Cohn in last year’s Cannes title The Apprentice, didn’t weigh in on tariffs, but he did talk about Potus: “Roy Cohn...

Every Upcoming A24 Movie in 2025 and Beyond
Image
The hipster on the indie block, A24, loves to do things differently. They have built almost a cult-ish following by making stuff legacy studios have refused to touch, and by selling cool merch that downtown celebrities and legions of film-bros love to show off. In the last few years, however, even a company like theirs had to start thinking bigger.

Having raised $225 million from Stripes in 2022, A24 was suddenly valued at $2.5 billion – a rather insane number for an indie film company. It goes without saying that growing pains are a real thing, with Hollywood already in upheaval due to writer strikes and empty theatres. Many indie companies have failed when they tried to go big. A24, nevertheless, believes in their credibility – over 60% of their moviegoers picked them just because they were from A24, a level of loyalty even Disney would envy.

The leap to blockbuster success, nonetheless, has been risky.

Oscars Red Carpet Power Rankings: Chanel, Timothée Chalamet and Ariana Grande Among Big Winners
Image
Never trust a narrative that suggests viewers are not interested in the Academy Awards or the high-wattage style parade of the Oscars red carpet because the numbers confirm otherwise.

Initial reports noted that ratings for the Oscars 2025 telecast were slightly down from 2024. But the updated Nielsen numbers — revised, as is the researcher’s policy, to include viewings on PCs, tablets and smartphones — reveal that the broadcast increased its viewership by 1 percent over the previous year with a total audience of 19.69 million.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Red Carpet Power Rankings, meanwhile, delivered a far more significant increase. The Top 10 Fashion Brands seen on the 2025 Academy Awards red carpet totaled a whopping $101 million in earned engagement, up from $87.5 million in 2024. What might that mean? Did viewers find Oscar Night style more compelling than the previous year? That certain gown and tuxedo details became popular social-media conversations? Or were the stars themselves the...

Oscars UK Ratings: ITV’s Coverage Peaks Above 1M Viewers
Image
Last night’s UK Oscars coverage pulled in a peak of 1 million viewers.

ITV’s second year covering the world’s biggest night in cinema attracted an average of more than 500,000 viewers, with a peak of 1M just after the start, which naturally dipped quite swiftly. At its highest, the coverage was pulling in a 28% share of all audiences who were watching TV at the time.

Last night’s coverage aired from 10.30 p.m. GMT (2.30 p.m. Pt) onwards and was helmed by Jonathan Ross, with a dedicated Oscars channel running on Itvx. Ross was joined by Jason Isaacs, Mariella Frostrup and Elle Osili-Wood. Before the show started they talked the audience through the big nominees,...

Grammy Awards Red Carpet Winners: Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift and Jaden Smith Take the Top Spots
Image
Grammy Awards ratings may have been down, but social media engagement was definitely on the rise, and that helped propel the Red Carpet Power Rankings to some impressive numbers.

Live viewership for the 2025 Grammy Awards experienced a drop from 2024, drawing 15.4 million people vs. the 17.09 million who caught last year’s broadcast. Given that ratings for awards shows overall have been dwindling in recent years, The Recording Academy decided for 2025 to reach out to influencers to ideally ensure conversation and engagement. That plan worked, as online chatter increased vs. previous years, and data firms reported record numbers in social and earned engagement.

Cameron Diaz Criticized For Returning To The Red Carpet After Ten-Year Hiatus – In Jeans!

Cameron Diaz, who recently made her return to acting for the 2022 action/comedy feature Back in Action, has officially made her return to the red carpet.

Back in Action follows former CIA spies Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Jamie Foxx) whose secret identities are exposed, forcing them into espionage.

At the Berlin premiere of the film on January 15, Diaz hit the red carpet accompanied by her costar Foxx. Deviating from premiere fashion norms, Diaz sported baggy high-waisted black jeans, complemented by a sheer black top and a dramatic wool coat that trailed behind her at floor length. She topped off the look with slick black flats, bright red lipstick, gold earrings and an artistically casual bun.

Despite the carefully curated fashionable display, many people called Diaz out for wearing jeans to the exclusive event. In turn, many other people pointed out that Diaz looked much more physically comfortable in her clothing...

‘Hacks’ Creators Tease Season 4 & Reflect On Ageism In Hollywood After Golden Globes Win
Image
Hacks swiftly was renewed after the conclusion of its third installment in May, and audiences are sure to see a new dynamic between Ava and Deborah in Season 4.

Following the HBO comedy’s Golden Globe win Sunday night, creator Jen Statsky teased that they are now at a point in their relationship “they’ve never been before” after Ava (Hannah Einbinder) blackmailed Deborah (Jean Smart) into giving her the head writer position on her late-night gig in the Season 3 finale.

“Definitely in Season 4 you see them butting heads in ways they never have while also trying to get a show off the ground, which is very, very complicated,” Statsky explained.

This is the second time that Hacks has taken home the award for Outstanding Musical or Comedy Series at the Globes. Smart and Einbinder also were nominated for their roles once again, with Smart winning for a second time.

“It Is A Miracle That Everyone Still Has Their Jobs,” Co-Creator Justin Marks Quips After ‘Shōgun’ Wins Drama Series Golden Globe
Image
FX’s Shōgun continued its awards sweep from the Emmys at the Golden Globes, winning the Best Television Series – Drama category in addition to Lead Actor in a Television Series – Drama for Hiroyuki Sanada, Lead Actress for Anna Sawai and Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano.

Unlike the Emmys, where FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s novel competed as a drama and the 1980 NBC take as a miniseries, at the Globes both incarnations were classified as drama series, so Season 1 of the FX saga took the same Drama Series category its predecessor did 44 years ago.

Just as he did at the Emmys, Justin Marks, Shōgun co-creator, executive producer and showrunner alongside his wife, Rachel Kondo, accepted the top drama award. He framed his speech with an amusing domesticity anecdote.

“Yesterday, Rachel and I were scouring the ferns of our house looking for a 50-pound tortoise that we adopted for some reason that keeps escaping.

The stand-up comedian was nominated in the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television for her HBO special Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die. However, Glaser lost to Ali Wong and her Netflix special Single Lady.

When Glaser took the stage again, she acknowledged her loss and roasted herself while at it.

“I’m a first-time Golden Globe loser, Nikki Glaser,” she said. “You know what? I may not have won tonight but on the bright side, I just made $11,000 betting on Ali Wong on a European gambling site. So, you lose some, you win some.”

Oscar Viewership Rises 4% As ‘Oppenheimer’-Dominated Ceremony Starts An Hour Earlier
Image
It’s not the near sweep that Oppenheimer had, but ABC certainly has something to celebrate out of last night’s Academy Awards.

With the final numbers in, 19.5M viewers tuned in to watch the 2024 Oscars, according to Nielsen data. That’s a 4% win over the 18.8 million who tuned in for the 95th annual Academy Awards in 2023, propelling the show to a 4-year audience high.

The telecast also was at a 3.8 demo rating, compared with last year’s 4.0 — down, but not by much.

Perhaps it was naked John Cena or Ryan Gosling’s energizing performance of Barbie‘s “I’m Just Ken” that pushed the audience over the edge.

Sarah Timberman (‘Fleishman Is in Trouble’ executive producer) on being on the set and ‘laughing to the point of crying’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
First-time novelists aren’t usually given cart blanche to adapt their own work, particularly when they have also never before produced anything for film or television. But longtime journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner, a longtime freelancer and now staff writer for The New York Times Magazine. After writing her bestselling “Fleishman Is in Trouble” in 2019, longtime producer Sarah Timberman fell in love with Brodesser-Akner’s writing. And so did everyone else. “I think she had like 24 offers (to adapt the book),” Timberman recalls, “and we just sort of pursued it doggedly and sent it to FX and they got on board really quick, and that’s where it began.” The result was the eight-part FX on Hulu limited series that starred Jesse Eisenberg, Lizzy Caplan and Claire Danes, earned consistently glowing reviews (87% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and landed seven Emmy nominations (including for Best Limited Series on which Timberman served as an...

Tom Cruise and director/co-writer Christopher McQuarrie introduced the world premiere of Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in Rome on Monday evening.

Fresh from a stroll up the Spanish Steps in the heart of the city (a car chase in the film takes place on the famous stone staircase and in the Piazza di Spagne), Cruise and McQuarrie took the stage in the Auditorium della Conciliazione and in opening comments thanked “the people of Rome” and the local governments in Rome and Venice.

‘The View’ Talks Scrotums, But Avoids A Low Blow On Hugh Grant Oscars Carpet Antics
Image
It was perfectly fine for The View to talk about Hugh Grant and his scrotum resemblance during Thursday’s show. But bringing up his conduct on the Oscars beige carpet was apparently forbidden, angering a portion of its viewership.

Grant stopped in to the show to promote the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The actor talked about how nervous he was appearing as a presenter at the 2023 Academy Awards, where he reunited with Andie MacDowell, his costar in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

That’s where the scrotum joke came up.

“I was nervous. I wrote that joke and I was extremely nervous about it. I think I got away with it,” Grant said, referring to his comment that he looked like “basically a scrotum” when compared to MacDowell’s unlined complexion. “Sigourney Weaver said to me afterwards, ‘You don’t look like a scrotum,’ and she liked the joke,...

There’s always a reckoning. There has to be. A studio chief tells me that next awards season they’re going to recalibrate how they screen to voters “because there are a bunch of movies that people did not bother to see. Good movies that people did not watch because they were drawn to the noise. And the noise won.”

Look, gazillions of words have been written about the season that finally ended Sunday at the Dolby Theatre with a Best Picture win for A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Most Memorable Oscar Moments, From Jimmy Kimmel Mocking the Slap to Michelle Yeoh Making History
Image
The 2023 Oscars were full of laughs, tears and cheers throughout the night from the presenters, winners, host and Hollywood audience. From host Jimmy Kimmel‘s slapgate jokes to Michelle Yeoh making history with her best actress win amid a big night for best picture Everything Everywhere All at Once, here are some of the night’s most memorable moments.

Host Jimmy Kimmel Mocks Will Smith’s Oscars Slap

Host Jimmy Kimmel had a lot to say about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during last year’s Academy Awards ceremony. His jokes started during the opening monologue of the Oscars telecast, with Kimmel alluding to the infamous moment while recognizing the Irish performers who were attending. “Five Irish actors are nominated tonight, which means the odds of another fight on stage went way up,” Kimmel quipped. The host went on to poke fun at the fact that Smith was given the...

Jimmy Kimmel Jabs Academy Over Will Smith Slap: ‘Do What You Did Last Year, Nothing’ (Video)
Chris Rock at an event for Madagascar 3: Los fugitivos (2012)
Almost one full year after the slap heard — and seen — round the world at last year’s Oscars, the incident between Chris Rock and Will Smith was obviously the elephant in the room at Sunday night’s ceremony. And of course, this year’s Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel went right for it.

Well, not right for it. It actually took the host most of his monologue to get a slap joke in. In fact, it seemed for a bit that he might pull his punches, when he only made a fairly tame joke about the chances of a fight happening, referring to the cast of “The Banshees of Inisherin.”

“Five Irish actors are nominated, which means, the odds of another fight on stage just went way up,” Kimmel joked.

23 Stars Reveal Where They Store Their Oscars
Image
Winning an Oscar is among one of the highest honors in Hollywood and a goal many stars aspire to achieve. At last year's ceremony, we witnessed history when Ariana DeBose won for best actress in a supporting role for "West Side Story," making her the first Afro-Latina to win an acting Oscar. Will Smith also officially became an Oscar winner when he took home the trophy for best actor in a leading role for his performance in "King Richard."

This year, Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Colin Farrell, and Angela Bassett are among the many actors who scored nominations for their work. Rihanna - who is set to perform at the March 12 ceremony following her headline-making Super Bowl performance - also received her very first nomination for her song "Lift Me Up" from the "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" soundtrack. Meanwhile, fan-favorite movies include "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Avatar: The Way of Water.

Saudi Arabia Fund Increases Stake in Japan’s Toei, Expands Entertainment Investments – Global Bulletin
Image
Taking Toei

Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund (Pif) has increased its stake in Japanese film and TV studio Toei Company, from 5% to 6.03%, according to a report by the Reuters financial news agency. The move comes shortly after Toei published a ten-year plan for international expansion.

Toei includes film and TV production operations, the T-Joy cinema chain and Toei Animation. Last month, it said that it had beaten its film revenue record, thanks to the success of titles including “The First Slam Dunk,” “The Legend of Butterfly” and “One Piece Film Red.”

The stake increase also follows Pif’s February announcement that it had increased its stake in Japanese games and console maker Nintendo to 8.26% and that (along with the Singapore state fund Gic) was a buyer of a $966 million bond issue from Korean entertainment-tech firm Kakao Corp.

Entertainment appears to be a significant part of the...

‘Women Talking’ Wins Scripter Award for Adapted Screenplay
Frances McDormand, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, and Jessie Buckley in Ellas hablan (2022)
“Women Talking” has won the USC Libraries Scripter Award for adapted screenplay in a ceremony that took place on the USC campus in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

The Scripter Award goes to both the writer of an adapted screenplay and the author of the original material on which the screenplay was based, which meant that the award was given to writer-director Sarah Polley and novelist Miriam Toews, whose 2018 novel formed the basis for Polley’s film.

In the 34-year history of the Scripters, the winner has matched the Oscar winner 14 times, most of those in an eight-year streak between 2010 and 2017.

Other finalists were screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro for “Living,” based on Leo Tolstoy’s novella “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”; screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz and journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey for “She Said”; and Guillermo del Toro, Patrick McHale and Matthew Robbins for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” based on...

Hulu New Releases: March 2023
Image
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Carey Mulligan Mistakenly Announced As BAFTA Winner At 2023 Ceremony, BBC Edits Out Awkward Moment
Image
Carey Mulligan was mistakenly announced as a BAFTA award winner during Sunday night’s ceremony.

The actress was incorrectly named as the winner of the Best Supporting Actress gong for her role in the MeToo movie “She Said”.

However, the award actually went to “The Banshees of Inisherin” actress Kerry Condon, the Independent reported.

The mistake was made after “Coda” star Troy Kotsur, who won the Best Supporting Actor award last year, presented the honour using sign language.

The sign language interpreter then mistakenly claimed Mulligan had won.
