Extraordinary performances of extraordinary endurance.
khunkrumark17 October 2018
The enormous strain that having a mentally disabled child is on full display. The courage, patience and the stamina of the family is well performed, written and screened.

But despite all that, this is a challenging program to watch. There's a feeling that you are living alongside the desperate frustrations that each family member have to go through and the unthinkable sacrifices that they have to make and the way that the father, mother and brother have to come to terms with the fact that they can't do what most 'normal' families can do.

There's also a lot of "What would I do in that situation?" Would any of us react the same way to given situations and disasters? Would we have the mental (and physical) fortitude to endure the relentless punishment of having a child that's "...wrong, but not wrong enough to die"?

Reviews from people who live life like this are probably more appropriate to take notice of than mine and I'd be interested in reading them. In the mean time I'll probably tune in for more because of the performances and the writing, despite it being very depressing to absorb.

As a father of an autistic child this show is terrifyingly accurate
emceeanz20 November 2021
I can't tell you what a relief it is to see our story represented, although imagine how much harder it is for working class parents, this couple was extremely lucky they had 1 able bodied child, extended family to support and provide help, and they had flexible well paid professional careers to help take care of the financial stresses.

One of the most relieving features of this show was the illustration of just how clueless 95% of the world is to the difficulties of raising a disabled child, one of the most patronising experiences is when parents of able bodied children empathise with your experience by comparing their well behaved children to your relentless nightmare of a life, sorry, BUT YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHATSOEVER, raising an able bodied child is a cakewalk and you have nothing to complain about, so watch this show and get some perspective - I know they mean well but it's just so patronising, so it was extremely gratifying to see this experience reflected through the relationship with the neighbour and his perfectly behaved child. It was great to see that none of this "able bodied prejudice" nonsense was included, anyone that wouldn't want a better life for their disabled child is a child abuser imo. It was also great to see the nurses, family and friends telling the parents that they're just imagining that they're child has issues, this is done purely because these people do not want to face the consequences if the parents are right, they don't want to have the awkward conversations or offer their condolences because that would take extra effort on their behalf, meanwhile it isolates the parents and makes them feel like they're going insane, every parent of a disabled that I've spoken to has gone through this exact experience and what's worse is that there are no support services or counselling for the parents that basically have to go through the stages of grief - whilst everyone is telling them they're just neurotic, or "over convened first time parents", it really is a traumatic experience especially for first time parents.

An amazingly accurate portrayal of the lives of families with disabled children. Well done to the bbc.

And to all the reviewers that said they couldn't stand listening or watching because the child was too " annoying",what cowards you are, I'd hate to think what would become of you and your children if this was your life and yes this does make you a terrible person , I mean try to imagine what the parents have to go through considering they can't just turn off their tv and block it out of their mind. At the very least I hope it helps illustrate what a fortunate existence you live.

7.9?? Really??
mradarley-4766115 July 2020
I've only written a review because I saw the overall rating, but reading the reviews has restored my faith in people. This show is magnificent, say what you like about us British but our ability to turn pain into humour is unrivalled! Based on Shaun Pye (the writers) own experience with his disabled daughter it is beautifully acted, written and produced. By the way the girl playing Rosie who isn't actually disabled, I mean just wow !!! I spoke to someone who has an autistic son and she said that although this show was so close to home for her the humour made her appreciate it all the more.

1000% is a must watch
leanneeccles-7775017 October 2018
IAfter watching there she goes I've got to give it A*** for the makers. 100% it's a must watch. I can relate to this so much People that don't have a child with Learning disabilities will think it's funny and extreme, but to people like me it's our life day in day out with my 9 ye old son. It's hard, exhausting, upsetting and tough but it's also the most rewarding job with the funniest, caring kindness young man Yes we have our days and many of them that are just like this program so we can laugh and relate because whats happening in it is so true. #learningdisabilities #raiseawarness

Poignant, funny and real.
angenwayne88922 January 2019
I'm at a loss for words to review this series but I simply must. I have no experience with autism personally but my child is severely disabled with special needs. I could relate so well to the general theme of parenting a special needs child that it really touched a nerve. Watching Hynes portray the pregnancy, the early stages of bonding and a special needs mother's isolation - especially the scene at a reading/singing group - were parts that I could relate to so fully it broke my heart. I cried and cried. But there are so many laughs in there too. The opening of episode one where they end up driving Rosie to the park is brilliant. People on the outside of these situations just don't realise how the smallest tasks with a special needs child can seem like moving the earth. And if we didn't laugh at these struggles sometimes, we would undoubtedly lose our minds. It all becomes so "normal" eventually that what might seem shocking to someone else is completely run of the mill for us! This series should be so enlightening to someone with no connection to a family coping with a life like this day to day. I recommend it to so many people for them to get an insight into my families highs and lows - and other families for that matter. For so many of us, this is real life and the series is perfect for raising awareness of another taboo subject. Hynes and Tennant do an outstanding job. It's brilliant. Watch it.

Thank you - everyone should watch this - 150 mins and so enlightening
kerijohnson-1217415 November 2018
6.5 years into our own Autism journey, made official only 3 weeks ago, this programme couldn't have been timed more perfectly for us. The early year scenes are harrowing to watch and the up to date years are positive, joyful chaos, with comedic value. Although our child is verbal, this is still accurately spot on to how we muddle our way through daily. This is a valuable 150 mins for all to watch if they want to get a more realistic view of day to day life with an Autistic member of the family. Thank to all involved.

Why has Miley Locke not won an award?
rachel-193-1202743 September 2020
She is so talented!. It must be so very difficult to not have any lines. She has to express the extreme emotions that Rosie feels though just her expression and actions. Miley Locke is truly going to be in great demand as an actor. David Tennant, well what can you say, He's David Tennant, superb in every part he plays. The love in this family is so strong. Mom Em, is so loving to both her children. Brother Ben puts up with so much from Rosie. Not many Teens would be so tolerant of her outbursts. To think this is based on a true family is heartwarming. This show is a must see for everyone. If you can, binge watch it. You will not be disappointed. If this was an American production it would be worthy of multiple EMMYs. Lets hope BAFTA continues to recognize this wonderful show and these wonderful actors. If I could give it 20 stars I would. Every actor is believable. Every actor's Timing is perfect, emotions are spot on. GREAT GREAT SHOW!!

Genuinely amazing
dan-55-4799886 December 2018
I adored this. It has a brutal honesty to it, and moments of great pain, but leavened with very realistic wins that give the family reason to find what happiness they can. The acting is wonderful, particularly Jessica Hynes, who probably has the most demanding role, but there's not a duff one amongst them.

I really loved it.

A must watch and a gr8 show that spreads mental health awareness!
dreamydeppvd10 November 2018
God bless the makers of this show and obviously Jessica Hynes, the kid actors, the rest o' the cast and obviously , David 10nant (whom I don't thank enough for being the heart & soul o' another brilliant BBC show that highlighted mental illness- Takin Over the Asylum) for being the heart and soul o' this show that teaches the viewers about the hurdles of living with a learning disability as well as the patience that parenting takes. It'll have you in tears and at the same time, it'll give you joy and hope and the fact that it's so realistic and delves into the psyche o' both the kids and grownups are just some more o' the plus points. It definitely will teach ya more about psychology and mental health than school or college ever did. So, plz do watch it and tell ur friends. If not for the brilliant acting and story and great flashback scenes that depict the character development (the characters themselves are the kinds you'll root for, while some others might just make you grit your teeth, but then warm up to em gradually), then atleast do it for Rosie.

Big NO for me
mdebotton21 February 2024
This is not entertainment to me. Listening to a character whine for 30min was stressful. We should be moved or entertained in one way or another by television. I appreciate that this is some people's real life and how they do not is beyond me, but I wish I could see that story with Pugh listening to their child whine and damage the house. They did a fantastic job of portraying the stress of their daily lives. So good in fact I was incredibly stressed out myself after 1 episode. Surely there could have been a better way to portray this story. I'm really surprised by the high reviews. How is this enjoyable.

How did they get it so right
shirleykilburn19624 August 2020
Watching this series was like watching part of my life again and reliving those uncomfortable, scary, funny, heartwarming, frustrating moments that are typical of living with, in my case an autistic son. Rosie was so like him in so many ways. The acting by everyone is amazing especially Miley Locke who plays Rosie. Brilliant series that made me laugh and cry and cry and cry. I would recommend it to everyone, those with learning disabled children to see that there are others out there going through similar experiences and those without who might gain some understanding and learn to be more tolerant.

I had missed this the first time around and the first episode was shown again on the BBC the other night and I watched it really from being too lazy to change channels. But it is quite exceptional - funny and sad and seemed so familiar from the families I've known in similar circumstances. Miley Locke as Rosie was excellent, such a well observed piece of acting. Highly recommended.

Long over-due!
msflybird8 October 2020
A show with this much compassion and vision is long overdue. I worked professionally in the field of Autism most of my adult life. The parents of these children deserve Purple Hearts for what they do. Thanks to everyone in this show for helping us all see a glimpse of their lives.

Miss Locke plays a very believable character. It is a show that's hard to watch and equally hard not to keep going.

I can't.
islandliphe4me22 August 2020
I think this is a story that needs to be told and this could be a great story. However, I just cannot listen to 30 minutes of Rosie's whining. I'm sorry if that makes me a bad person, but it was just unbearable.

Perfectly Balanced Writing and Cast
john-3623213 July 2020
There She Goes will make you laugh, cry and shout for joy! The writing is superb, Tennant gives, for me, his best performance ever and Hynes captures the love, angst, frustration and sheer weariness as the mother of a disabled child - and then there is Rosie - a non speaking part that carries meaning and sincerity!

Watch it!

Are there ever good days?
somethingreal8110 August 2020
Good show, but nearly every episode shows Rosie destroying the house, destroying a restaurant, grabbing the steering wheel, injuring someone, and seemingly ruining the lives of everyone around her. Surely there must be good days too? I wish they'd show us some of those!

Soo good - must see
gemsymcgemgems19 August 2021
Literally one of the best things I've watched.

If you're a parent you will cry, you will relate & you will laugh. It's simply brilliant.

The kitchen scene in the first series is harrowing!

I can't recommend this enough.

It's not the easiest watch, but I recommend you give it the time it deserves and you will find something special.
