The acting in this was laughable, characters was soooo wooden it was unbelievable!

I like watching films based on true stories, but this was hard work ... please avoid , unless you like B rated movies !!

Wanted to like this movie....
griffinbonacci8 September 2019
Well, let me start out by saying, the true events this movie is based on happened here in my state. And the people were from the same city as me. I also remember how big of a news story this was when I was a kid.

So I thought this would be an interesting movie. And it could have been. EXCEPT:

First the pacing of this movie is absolutely dismal! It feels like an effort in film slow motion. And it is abysmally painful at times to sit through.

The acting is third rate. Yeah, it is that bad. I have worked on multiple films myself (My State has a fairly active film industry) and even our productions have 1st class acting compared to this!

Also, this was not shot in Utah and I can tell you, the terrain looks NOTHING like Utah! As friendly of a environment as Itah is supposed to be to productions and the fact this film shows a $1 million dollar budget, I don't know what the hell that money was spent on! As a film maker myself, I can tell you, if I had had $1 million dollars to make this film, it would have been worlds better in quality than this production!

As the other review says, don't waste your time. This story had the potential to be a very interesting story. But this is as bland as Utah jello!

Worst $1 I've ever spent. Acting and Script is unbearable

1. Dads voice Almost made me quit watching 2. No one had real tears. 3. Grandma got shot in head and no blood 4. Cops were terrible actors 5. The writer and director of this needs to be locked away

So absolutely bad in every area. AVOID
patherwill16 April 2022
Terrible, amateur performances. Supposedly filmed in Utah but looked more like the Chilterns in December. Wounds of victims too small for close-up kill. It was so awful that I only continued watching it to see if Tiffany Celi got banged.

Every Actor Is Terrible
trnjamesbond17 March 2021
This is probably the worst film I've seen in a long time, all the characters are annoying, from the sheriff and his idiotic deputy, the family is just hard to watch, especially the father.

Last but not least we have the lead actor from the murderers, his only line seems to be "shut the f#$!* up"

I have nothing more to say, other than pass on this one. There are much better films to watch in this sort of genre.

Thanks for reading.

Terrible
scarlettimogen8 September 2019
The acting was comical, no sense of threat despite the horrific circumstances, it's almost like a school production....one of the most amateur films I've seen in a very very long time

I've clicked on some garbage before...
haskel-7295119 April 2020
...on Amazon Prime, but nothing as bad as this before. I made it 20 minutes, not sure which is worse: the acting (if you can call it that), the screenplay, or the 'kid with a camera' "direction" of Andrew Jones. There is not a single thing here that suggests anyone involved should EVER work in film again, but they have, and I'll make sure to avoid anything else they do.

Seriously? No...
rosecalifornia11 September 2020
Just another example of people using close friends and family for actors to make a film with a video camera.

It is horrible from the first second in to the rolling credits out.

It's almost as if people haven't watched any truly excellent films at all, then think - hey I can buy/rent/borrow this camera and make something ...well no you can't.

Granted you don't need films school to make a blockbuster. But you do need to have a handle on the nuts and bolts of cinematography, filters, editing, actors, scene-setting, lighting and on and on and on....Oh and don't forget the script you need a solid script.

This true story is there for eveyone to work with - but this film fell so flat it is like a sheet of Saran Wrap. Skip this movie, and you are welcome for the warning.

Not that bad
Lovefilms987622 May 2022
I think some of the reviews for this film don't give an accurate reflection. It's worth more than 2.8 IMO. Yes it is not the best horror I have ever watched but it is not the worst either. It's a low budget horror so films like this are never going to be amazing, just enjoy it for what it is. It was enough to keep me watching and the acting wasn't too bad. The film was a bit depressing but was good to see the villains get caught, It's not a film i would watch again but alright for a one time watch. I would rate this film around 5 but have rated it higher because of the low reviews.

A tense atmosphere
brucenolan-264045 September 2019
The low budget nature of the movie taking place mostly in one cabin gives this a claustrophobic tense atmosphere. But the best part of the movie is the killers being played as normal convicts rather than indestructible slasher movie bogey men. One of them is not as enthusiastic about the chaos as the other one who is a sexual deviant and there's as much tension between them as there is between the killers and family members. That was an interesting way to go and makes it a little less predictable than the usual home invasion stuff. The movie takes a while to get going but once it does it becomes compelling but very uncomfortable viewing as the men taunt and murder family members. The acting by the cast playing the family in the hostage scenes is top notch and it makes for a disturbing experience. Can't say I enjoy seeing people suffer but as drama it was effective.

Definitely Not Filmed in Utah
mrh115517 September 2019
Really? Trees aren't green in Utah at that time of the year, steering wheels on cars are on the left hand side, and the predominant religion is Mormon not Catholic (although sounded a lot like Mormonism). Boring acing, boring storyline, all around stupid movie.

You're not getting my purse
nogodnomasters13 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is apparently based on a true story judging by how bad the film was and the results of the trial given at the end. Two prisoners break out of Salt Lake in 1990 and wind up in Oakly, Utah with clown masks at Christmas. They break into a cabin and murder some folks as you might be able to figure out from the title. The family was not Mormon and it was very green outside for winter. Having never been to Oakly, I don't know if it stays green year-round and the trees never lose their leaves. I just expected snow. Could be one of those Hollywood subliminal messages about climate change or an apathetic director on a budget? The acting was not good. I wish they had killed a few more people and earlier. Lee McQueen has David Hess potential. Is make-up still outlawed in Utah?

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity

So Deeply, Deeply Boring
MeMyselfOnline4 September 2019
Good grief, this is one boring film!

This acting is abysmal and people engage in one monotonous, tedious monologue after the next.

So much talking. So little interest in anything they have to say.

Avoid like the plague.

Ridiculously Boring

I thought this movie would never end. Nothing ever happens without a super long boring speech from a very stupid script by a totally uninteresting character. Just plain BORING!

ride-897-72935918 April 2022
OMG 1 minute into the opening scene and I knew this was going to be a poor failure of a movie, watched about half hour and its just lame. Horrible acting and storyline. Should be an F grade horror. Not even worth going straight to DVD let alone Netflix. Give it a huge miss.

Details still matter?
cfossilman7 September 2019
While not trying to discredit the seriousness of the true story line, how does one have a landscape of fully leaved trees in Utah at Christmas time? The landscape resembles the summertime English countryside where it was filmed, not the near desert conditions of Utah.

Last house on the left in a cabin
dannyross-454025 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The movie reminded of last house on the left with its plot escaped convicts terrorising two girls in horrible ways as two cops hunt them down. Although thankfully they didn't put in the goofy comedy that's in that movie and played it serious. There are some shocks as characters who would normally survive these kinds of movies bite the dust until only the girls are left to face the lead villain who is probably one of the sleaziest characters you ever wish to meet. Its every bit as cheaply made as last house but some scenes are just as unsettling and even more so when you realise it actually happened in real life. Not a bad effort.

Boring, practically a waste of time
Andrea_J_Mc19 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Listen, I dont think every horror/crime movie has to be a packed with meaning or a be masterpiece for the ages. This film is neither of those, so if that's what you're looking for, look for another PG-13 horror. (Even though this is rated R, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is leagues better). This movie has bad acting, one good shot in the beginning but, even that gets old when you realize it's the same shot of the house over and over again. The worst thing is, it made me laugh and when I watch a supposed horror, thriller, crime or whatever movie I dont want to laugh at the horrible acting. Hopefully the actors just got dealt a bad script that was rushed to production and they'll better get roles soon.
