Rehashed Plot of a past Hallmark film
mcarneil-0988220 April 2020
First the good....... The scenery was absolutely beautiful. I was shocked when I read that this was not a real resort/camp. The set design was gorgeous. The one thing this film accomplished was make want to go to a place like that.

There are times though I actually think the powers that be at Hallmark considers their viewers to be too dumb to notice. I noticed and a apparently a few others did as well. The plot is fairly similar to the 2018 film "Love on the Slopes". The personalities of the characters were nearly identical. The only real difference in this film was the lead female character did not have a boyfriend. Hallmark films have a lot of rehashed plots but this was glaringly noticeable. Its almost like the writers did not care.

I love a good escapist Hallmark film, but I'm starting to get tired of the retreads and rehashes.

Insincere
Jackbv12319 April 2020
I didn't get off to a good start with this movie because in the first scene with Emilie Ullerup, she looked fake and likewise she acted a little fake too. I'm not sure if that scene poisoned the well and therefore it was only in my mind but that insincerity seemed to carry through the movie at least a little. And I don't think it was just in my mind. Add to that the constant Middle Schoolish gossip between Katie and Penny and the whole thing seems even more juvenile. All movies of this type have some of that, but I think they carried it overboard.

Christopher Russell seems to me to be always posing for a shot. I never saw chemistry between them.

The story followed a predictable path for the plot line of a writer sent to do a expose who falls for her subject. Trouble is, I never saw why she would fall for him or he for her. (Other than the fact she thought he's hot.) On the other hand, the story was more than that. City girl learns to love nature is a well used theme, but that part of the story was convincing. You can't help but enjoy the beauty of the setting and that really helped sell that theme.

Side note: Ullerup revealed on Twitter that she was very pregnant during filming. If you watch for it, you can see the covering up for it. She had a body double for wide shots. Many Hallmark stars Tweet during their premieres and sometimes they respond to honest questions or share behind-the-scenes tidbits

Beautiful scenery but that's all
taylornan19 April 2020
The scenery in this movie is beautiful. I like both of the lead characters as I have seen them in other HM movies. BUT..... together they have ZERO chemistry and both act kinda goofy...

Have seen better & worse..
ts-000022 April 2020
I normally enjoy the lead, this movie not so much. Not sure if it was the script, overall cast or the cinematic approach to hide a pregnancy. The male lead came across like,he was posing for a tourism guide. The leads chemistry, seemed wooden & awkward. I can see in a tv series a pregnancy, being worked around or into a script.. Why didn't filming be postponed as the lead for,a nature/adventure storyline was very pregnant. We expect a certain formula, but hope at least some effort is put into it. One enjoyable aspect, beautiful scenery.

Not much chemistry
frogwiz19 August 2020
I would think he would prefer the natural look instead of a bleached blonde with red lipstick and fake eyelashes. However, the scenery was really beautiful.

I really liked it.
volvorod-9213130 May 2021
I am a 46 year old man that watches a lot of movies. My main preferences are Horror, Sci-Fi, Mystery and Comedy.

With that said; - i really liked this movie!

Perhaps i am getting old and turning soft, but i am watching - and liking - more and more of these Hallmark movies. Most of them have silly, simple and similar content; Girl meets boy. Girl and boy clash regarding something. Girl and boy forgive each other and becomes a couple.

But - if you are watching a Hallmark movie - then THAT is what you WANT and EXPECT from the movie.

Just a romantic movie about a couple finding each other.

Nature of Love

I can't comment about this having a rehashed plot, but I did enjoy it.

I thought the plot worked, and that the two leads had good chemistry.

If you want a nice way to spend 83 minutes then you could do a lot worse than this film.

Love and glamping
TheLittleSongbird7 April 2022
There were four Hallmark Spring Fling films from 2020, 'Just My Type', 'You're Bacon Me Crazy', 'Fashionably Yours' and this. Of the four, to me 'Just My Type' was the only one that was above average (though the next two were more mixed feelings than dislike). Have liked Emilie Ullerup and Christopher Russell in other things, with Ullerup being the more consistent one of the two, and the premise was quite cute if unoriginal. Have come though long ago to not expect originality from Hallmark.

'Nature of Love' to me is the worst of the four 2020 Spring Fling films. It is not terrible as such and Hallmark definitely did far worse that year ('Romance in the Air', 'Follow Me to Daisy Hills', 'Falling for Look Lodge'). It also did better, such as 'Wedding Every Weekend', the only above good Summer Nights entry that year, and was pleasantly surprised by some of the Countdown to Christmas films ('Five Star Christmas'). 'Nature of Love' had its moments, but is pretty mediocre.

It's not a complete flop. The supporting cast do a nice job with what they're given, and they deserved more and better. The music has pleasant moments.

Best thing about 'Nature of Love' is the scenery, which is absolutely gorgeous. The beautiful photography complements it very well.

However, there is a lot wrong here. Both Ullerup and Russell underwhelm. Especially Russell, who appears to be sleepwalking and is too introverted and too much of a poser. Ullerup is more animated, but tries too hard with the facial expressions (usually don't have a problem with her on this front) and it was hard to look past her character's stupidity and naivety. Do agree with people regarding their severe lack of chemistry, it just looked very awkward and under-rehearsed.

Found myself struggling to connect with all the characters, none of them are developed that well and all the character flaws are over-written. The dialogue has so much cheese it is enough to make one cringe and the conversations between the two leads were so unnatural. The story is too much like a very fatigued re-tread, not just the recycled Hallmark cliches but also the premise is very seen it all before. The pace is pedestrian as is the direction.

Sadly, on the whole this didn't do much for me sorry to say. 4/10.

I liked it
jewhitmer2517 July 2021
Judging by the other user reviews, I am swimming against the current, but I liked the movie .

I liked all the characters. Great ensemble cast. And bonus, the scenery was beautiful (sunrise over the mountain, reflecting on a peaceful lake)'

The script was predictable but was entertaining and flowed easily from beginning to end.

No it ain't Shakespeare, but that's not what I'm looking for in a Hallmark film, If I wanted Shakespeare I would be watching Henry V or The Taming of the Shrew. (great plays by the way) I am also swimming against the current here as a woman who actually likes The Taming of the Shrew.

That being said, back to the movie,

I thought Emily Ullerup as Katie and Christopher Russell as WIll had great chemistry and I enjoyed all their scenes together.. And Chrstopher Russell has a great smile. He smiles and something melts inside me.

Hallmark movies take me away from the hum drum of daily life, I get to escape from the dirty dishes in the sink and the clothes in the dryer for a while.

My advice: watch the movie, sit back and enjoy the Hallmark cliches , it's worth it just to see Christopher Russell smile.

Cringeworthy but gorgeous scenery
rebekahrox20 April 2020
Christopher Russell seems fated to be paired up with pregnant co-stars distractingly striving to hide their condition. But that's neither here nor there. What we have here is a by the numbers hallmark plot unredeemed by interesting character development, outstanding acting, or sparky writing. In fact, the writing was cringeworthy. Will is touted as some big expert/consultant in conservation, but no university education is even mentioned. Katie is the daughter of a corporate lawyer and university professor yet she acts very ignorantly and the samples of her writing we are treated to are inane and insipid. Her behavior is childish. I think she's supposed to be perky and funny, but she comes across as just silly. Also still another case of too many cosmetics for the type of role. As for chemistry, it's not good when you want to look away when the leads are having "a moment."

Christopher Russell. What can I say? He is so handsome that it's like he stepped off the cover of a paperback romance. Unfortunately, It seems like he always plays mellow, rather passive romantic heroes. In most if not all of the roles I've seen him in, He seems detached and like he's just going through the motions. Maybe that is because Hallmark just plugs him in to roles where hunkiness is more important than personality. I'd love to see him in another type of part. It's too bad if they are just taking advantage of his good looks because in real life he seems like an authentic, nice if private happily- married-for-years father of two. In fact, a real life Hallmark hero 10 years down the road.

Grew on me
SunnyDaise21 March 2021
I couldn't really settle into this movie until I realised we are all 'Katies' in our own way, especially when adjusting to new settings / jobs / personal encounters. At first, I thought maybe the lead actors were too old with Katie being a rookie at almost everything, but the characters and plot are actually quite ageless, which I always prefer. At anytime in life, we can be thrown into to an entirely different scenario so in that sense there is something for every generation in this family-friendly movie.

Definitely Worth a Look
mfreburg-946-1375415 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"Nature of Love" (2020) (Prime Video/Hallmark)

Emilie Ullerup and Christopher Russell are the leads in this movie about "glamping," which was filmed among beautiful scenery that I found jaw-dropping. I thought both actors did a fine job, and had discernible chemistry. Ullerup's character, a reporter, obviously found Russell's character, a staff member, attractive and interesting, and it was obvious not only to Ullerup but to her "camp neighbor," played by Donna Benedicto, that as the week progressed, Russell's character found Ullerup interesting as well. (By the way, DiBenedicto did not have a large role, but she was good in her role. If you agree after watching the film, look her up--she has had the lead in other romance films. "Farmer Seeking Love" from 2022 comes to mind--she was so good in that one.)

Others mentioned the similarity between "Nature of Love" and 2018's "Love on the Slopes." Yes, they are very similar, except for the wrap-up (watch them both to see the difference), and for the fact that the leading lady here (Ullerup) has no pre-existing boyfriend. That lack was fine with me, because as per Hallmark standards, the pre-existing boyfriend is always dufus and always gets dumped in those films, so why bother writing one into the script? In both cases the writer's boss (in this film Hallmark regular Catherine Lough Haggquist) is the one trying to get a personal-type magazine article out of reporter Ullerup--against her will. Things do work out differently in each film--again, watch the other movie if you really want to compare them. But enough about that other movie.

Regarding this film, there are some interesting twists--or would-be twists. The lovely Erin Boyes plays the camp owner, and it seems as if she has a thing for Russell, too. We are frequently treated to her unhappy looks at Russell and Ullerup when those two are together. It's interesting, as it seems the scriptwriters missed a beat there. Eric Gustafsson, who plays another camp staffer, is shown several times looking longingly at Boyes, which would seem to have opened up an opportunity for a great subplot, but the movie never exploits that one. More's the pity!

I had none of the problems with the film that that other reviewers mentioned regarding placement of flowers or supposedly green-screened animals. Nothing looked fake to me, but then I go into romance films from the likes of Hallmark expecting to see a...romance film--not a nature documentary or anything else. I suspend disbelief, and pay attention to the characters. If the story is good and the actors pull it off, I'm usually happy. In this case, all of the aforementioned actors did their job, and, yes, I was happy. It wasn't the most original romance movie I've seen, but it is well worth a look.

She's An Idiot

Who goes on any writing assignment without doing a little research and preparation first? This gal had never even heard the term "glamping!" And, she was afraid she might be thought of as "shallow." How about brainless.

Plastic flowers everywhere!
steve1620-638-30141419 April 2020
The storyline of this movie is fine. The scenery is spectacular, although all of this beauty could not naturally all be contained in one local. (The featured couple is in the middle of a lake, and magically spots river otters in the middle of the lake - I think not...) But the most offensive aspect of this movie was the "planting" of artificial flowers in way too many scenes. We've seen this in a number of Hallmark movies, usually in street scenes along sidewalks, or in front of homes. But this was a nature movie, and they show a mountain lake with a typically rocky/sandy beach, and fake flower stuck in the sand! These weren't even imitating wildflowers; they were fake garden flowers! Hallmark - let nature's beauty speak for itself. Cut the plastic flowers!

comfortable
Kirpianuscus9 October 2021
The basic word for define it can be too predictable. That makes it a comfortable film, because the nature matters more than story. And sure, for a fist of reasons, it can be charming, from the effort to hide pregnancy to the memories of characters and the few animals. And, off course, for lavander field. So, a so familiar Hallmark film. Not bad, not good, only easy.

Just Okay
JerseyGirl5019 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I like Emily Ullerup, but I wasn't that fond of the character she played in this movie. As others have pointed out, it seems her character did zero research before setting out for her first writing assignment which is odd considering she wanted to be a writer so badly.

Christopher Russell was disappointing as the 'rugged outdoorsman and nature guide.' I know it wasn't his fault - he was just delivering the written lines - but a naturalist would be able to correctly identify the first sparrow they saw on their bird walk as a white-throated sparrow, not a golden-crowned sparrow. To the writers - just take a minute and ask someone who knows anything about birds to validate your guess at the species before filming.

The scenery is beautiful.

This one didn't make my top 100 list for Hallmark movies...

Great Scenery and Enjoyable Watching
cincy-4798319 April 2020
Okay - first for the negatives... this is typical Hallmark and all of their normal elements are in here. Totally predictable, various plus-and-play Hallmark story modules make the story line and so on.

Now... for the positives... the lead actress totally makes the movie, she has good personality and gives the movie a lively character. This is not just a typical Hallmark movie about baking, dog walking, or other typical Hallmarkisms. The setting was reasonable realistic and different from most Hallmark productions.

The ending is a bit unlikely but it is still good.

YO HALLMARK - hire me to help make your movies a bit more lively and way less predictable.

Poor acting, poor writing, poor all of it. Actors are completely forced and unnatural which comes off difficult to watch. Stuck it out as had nothing else to watch, but it was painful.

below average
sarajimi25 April 2020
I give average movies a 7 so this was below. the movie could've been better but their cheap efforts to improve the scenery and add cuteness by green-screening animals in were so obvious as to be comical. the lead actor is obviously not the great outdoorsman he is meant to be for anyone who has done any of the activities they feature in the movie. on a side note, what's in the water at hallmark channel? this has got to be the fifth movie filmed in the past year where the lead actress is pregnant.

Right on Target
vintagegeek26 April 2020
This is a very pleasant cozy Hallmark Movie. Characters were very engaging. There were no clumsy negative events which so many writers think are clever. Scenery is terrific. No jokers thrown in to the be so called "funny goofy" character. It moved at a steady pace. A movie you'd enjoy watching again.

Nice scenery but a retread of a storyline
jdb_196119 April 2020
I saw this storyline before in Love on the Slopes. Nice scenery, handsome cast, but a bit blah. Also, the male lead, who is supposed to be a hard core naturalist, would never go clamping.
