Before wrapping up his TCA panel today for his Fxx series Dave, rapper comedian Dave Burd aka Lil Dicky revealed the guest stars for season 3.

The lineup includes Usher, Rick Ross, Demi Lovato, Don Cheadle, Machine Gun Kelly, Megan Fox, Killer Mike, and Travis Barker.

“That’s just a fraction and the fraction I haven’t named, will blow you away,” said Burd today at TCA.

Burd stars on the show and co-created the series with Jeff Schaffer.

Schaffer said “On Dave, People like playing funhouse versions of themselves or play with their public perception – a real plus for them. Everyone from Lin-Manuel Miranda playing a passive aggressive asshole. People want to come and have fun.”

As previously announced today, season 3 premieres April 5 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt on Fxx and stream the next day on Hulu. The premiere will include the first two episodes and episodes will stream next day on Hulu.

Chloe Bennet has signed on for a recurring role in Season 3 of “Dave” at Fxx, Variety has learned exclusively.

Bennet will appear in a multi-episode arc as Robyn, a photographer from Wisconsin whom Dave meets while on tour.

Bennet is known for her role in the ABC-Marvel series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” on which she starred as Daisy “Skye” Johnson, a.k.a Quake, throughout the show’s seven-season run. Her other notable roles include the ABC music drama “Nashville” and the animated Dreamworks film “Abominable.” She will reprise her “Abominable” role in the upcoming spinoff series “Abominable and the Invisible City,” which bows in October on Hulu.

Just hours after the nominations for the Golden Globe Awards, the Writers Guild of America, West and Writers Guild of America, East announced the latest batch of nominees for the upcoming WGA Awards, including honorees from television, new media, and news.

AMC’s “Better Call Saul” nabbed four nominations, one in drama series and three in episodic drama, which recognizes scripts from individual episodes of the season. Of particular note from today’s WGA announcement is the notable achievement of both Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” and Hulu’s “The Great” scoring nominations in both new series and comedy series. Both freshman shows also earned a nomination apiece in episodic comedy.

Based on series creator Hannah Fidell‘s 2013 film of the same name, “A Teacher” has become FX on Hulu‘s most-watched original series, surpassing both the regular sci-fi thriller “Devs” and fact-based miniseries “Mrs. America.”

Having premiered on Nov. 10, the 10-part miniseries ranked as the No. 1 show on Hulu for five of the eight weeks during its run and also attracted the most new subscribers to Hulu of any FX on Hulu exclusive series. Kate Mara-fronted drama A Teacher, which is based on Hannah Fidell’s feature film, has become FX on Hulu’s most-watched original – surpassing Mrs. America and Devs.

FX revealed that the series, which also stars Nick Robinson, also attracted more new subscribers to the digital service than the period drama and the sci-fi thriller.

However, the company didn’t disclose any actual viewing figures or substantial numbers – the latest digital platform to laud the success of a series without providing in-depth data.

It said that the ten-part series ranked as the number one show on Hulu for five of the eight weeks of its run.

Its audience was 42% higher than comedy Dave, which was FX’s most-watched show on Hulu and the highest rated comedy series in FX history.

Emmy-winning TV host Larry King has died. He was 87 years old.

His official Twitter account posted an announcement of his death on Saturday morning.

This will be the last year for the IFP Gotham Awards, as the organization behind the event — Independent Film Project — is formally changing its name to the Gotham Film and Media Institute, or the Gotham for short.

The rebrand, which coincides with the award show’s 30th anniversary, is intended to reflect the organization’s expanded focus and New York base. Going forward, the ceremony will lose its vestigial initials and simply be referred to as the Gotham Awards, as it has been known colloquially for years.

“We chose to change our name to the Gotham, or the Gotham Film and Media Institute, in recognition of the digital era and the best-known event that we produce every year, the Gotham Awards,” says Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the organization. Ricky Gervais’ emotional Netflix comedy about a misanthrope widower (Gervais) struggling to cope after the death of his wife (Kerry Godliman) will return for a second six-episode run. Filming began in September 2019, and it arrived on Netflix in April. Diane Morgan and Mandeep Dhillon co-star.

“Ramy” was the surprise Golden Globe Award winner last year for Best TV Comedy Actor with 28-year-old Ramy Youssef‘s performance and “Dave” could follow in its footsteps with 32-year-old star Dave Burd. Both Burd and Youssef co-created their half-hour shows, on which they serve as executive producers and writers in addition to starring as versions of themselves. This has more or less been the winning recipe for three of the last four winners in this category, with a 34-year-old Aziz Ansari winning three years ago for “Master of None” and a 33-year-old Donald Glover winning four years ago for his fictional character on “Atlanta.” Only a 74-year-old Michael Douglas recently has not fit the mold, although even he pulls double duty on “The Kominsky Method” as an executive producer.

Exclusive: Pitch alumna Meagan Holder is set for a recurring role opposite Dave Burd on the second season of Fxx’s hit comedy series Dave, co-created by and starring rapper and comedian Burd. Season 2 will premiere in 2021.

Based on the life of Burd (stage name Lil Dicky), Fxx’s Dave is centered on a neurotic man in his late twenties who has convinced himself that he’s destined to be one of the best rappers of all time. Now he must convince his closest friends, because with their help, he actually might convince the world. The series also stars Taylor Misiak, Andrew Santino, GaTa, Travis Bennett and Christine Ko.

Holder will play Tessa, the executive at the label who’s responsible for Dave. That means championing him, indulging him and cajoling him — into doing exactly what she needs him to do.

Kevin Hart’s latest Netflix comedy special is drawing record viewership for the streaming giant. More than 21 million Netflix members have watched Kevin Hart: Zero F**ks Given since its November 17 premiere, making it the No. 1 comedy special on the streamer this year, according to Netflix.

In the special, filmed in September from Hart’s living room in Los Angeles, Hart touches on topics such as group chats with male friends, sex after 40 and dealing with life during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In compiling its viewing stats, Netflix measures the number of Netflix member households that choose to watch a title for at least two minutes, long enough to indicate the choice was intentional.

Has Donald Trump blown it? Major actors have always coveted playing the role of an empathetic U.S. president, but after Trump’s four years will anyone want that gig?

In years past Michael Douglas, Daniel Day-Lewis, Harrison Ford and even Henry Fonda have depicted admirable presidents. Even Kevin Spacey was likable as Richard Nixon when Elvis came to visit him (in 2016’s Elvis & Nixon).

To be sure, they all had their idiosyncrasies. In Dave (1993), Kevin Kline wasn’t careful enough about who was chosen to “double” him, and Douglas in The American President (1995) should have been wary about dating that lobbyist, even though she was Annette Bening. But they were good guys at heart.

None of those characters would have considered denying election results, or ignoring a pandemic, or snubbing his successor’s inauguration. There were boundaries, even in movies, about political mischief.

Constructed under the watchful eye of John Landgraf, Chairman of FX Networks and FX Productions, the network developed a murderer’s row of projects that allowed them to stand shoulder-to-shoulder at the Emmy Awards with TV’s heaviest hitters, including HBO and Netflix. And while FX was less successful translating nominations into wins, there was nevertheless a feeling that the network often had arguably the best roster of shows on TV in any given year, with “The Americans,” “Atlanta,” “Better Things,” and a glut of Ryan Murphy programming filling its ranks.

On-location film permits for the Los Angeles area slowed by 7.6% from October to November as production activity eased amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the FilmLA agency reported Tuesday.

The industry, which was mostly shuttered from March to June, has received approximately 3,552 film permit applications spanning 2,514 unique projects over the past 20 weeks for location shooting in the Los Angeles area. For the first time since production resumed, month-over-month permit volume decreased in November as application intake declined to 813 permits from 880 in October.

The agency said the slowing stemmed from the 2020 election, the Thanksgiving holiday and the pandemic. FilmLA’s daily intake is now averaging around 39 new applications per business day.

“The November decrease in production reflects the ongoing complexity of the moment,” said FilmLA President Paul Audley. “At this point, progress for production rests, like so many things, on effective community control of Covid-19. The Greater Los Angeles filmmaking community, so...

Despite the pandemic, some 40 feature films began shooting on-location in Greater Los Angeles last month, and 27 unique TV show titles either resumed or started on-location filming in town, pulling their first permits since June.

Overall, however, on-location production of films, TV shows and commercials was down in November compared with October, according FilmLA, the City and County’s film permit office. It’s the first time since production resumed that month-over-month permit volume has decreased.

“The November decrease in production reflects the ongoing complexity of the moment,” said FilmLA president Paul Audley. “At this point, progress for production rests, like so many things, on effective community control of Covid-19. The Greater Los Angeles filmmaking community, so fortunate to be able to remain working, continues to be mindful of safe set rules.”

The longest awards season ever kicks off today with the announcement for the 2020 Gotham Awards nominees. The awards ceremony, backed by the Independent Film Project (IFP), is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. As always, the Gothams are the first stop on the awards season journey, which this year will last until the Oscars ceremony all the way on April 25. The 2020 Gotham Awards are set to take place January 11, 2021, over a month delay from when the ceremony’s usually held, on the first Monday after Thanksgiving.

While the Gotham Awards don’t always overlap with the Oscars, they often play a key role in elevating films into the overall awards conversation since the ceremony is the first of the season. Past acting winners like Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”), Awkwafina (“The Farewell”), Ethan Hawke (“First Reformed”), and Toni Collette (“Hereditary”) all had Oscar momentum following the Gothams, with Driver nabbing an Oscar nom for Best Actor.

Langella doesn’t mind one bit. “A lot of people talk to me about Skeletor, which is one of my favorite parts,” Langella says. “They always say, ‘Did you feel like you were slumming?’ And I say, absolutely not. My son was four years old. And I wanted him to see his father as Skeletor. And I loved playing it. It’s really one of my favorite parts, still.”

Exclusive: Channel 4 has taken Avalon memory challenge format Can I Improve My Memory? to series and replaced presenter Michael Buerk with former The Great British Bake Off host Sandi Toksvig.

The show premiered as a 60-minute special in March 2019, with Buerk challenging celebrities Gok Wan, Joey Essex, and Valerie Singleton to study unlikely specialist subjects using memory hacks, before testing them on their new-found knowledge.

Avalon, the producer of Taskmaster and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, will now make a four-part series for next year, with Toksvig in the driving seat and a new group of stars competing across knockout episodes to be crowned the memory champion.

Can I Improve My Memory? is executive produced by Jamie Isaacs and series produced by Alice Wheater. Tim Hancock and Sarah Lazenby commissioned the series for Channel 4.

Toksvig is growing her slate of Channel 4 shows after leaving the Bake Off tent earlier this year.

Temple Hill Productions has signed a multiyear, first-look TV deal with Lionsgate to develop and produce scripted programming across various platforms. The two companies have previously worked together on the “Twilight” movies, “Power Rangers” and “Uncle Drew.” In addition to those films, Temple Hill has produced “Maze Runner: The Death Cure,” “Love, Simon,” “Life Itself,” “The Hate U Give,” “First Man” and “The Fault in Our Stars,” among others. Exclusive: BBC Studios-owned UKTV and Keshet are returning to the scene of a Richard Ayoade-hosted comedy game show after the original shoot was derailed by coronavirus.

Keshet Productions UK will record a run-through of Question Team at the Rich Mix cinema and arts center in London on Thursday, with Ayoade presiding over comedians in a quiz like no other, as the players themselves write the questions.

The run-through for UKTV channel Dave, which gave the world Taskmaster, was first slated to take place in March under the title Who’s Asking? but the plans were put on hold amid the production shutdown across the UK.

Now, with studio comedy and entertainment shows back up and running, Keshet is forging ahead again and plans to film in front of a live audience for an informal run-through. It is not a pilot and the recording will not broadcast.

Heading into the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night, streamer Netflix found itself in a dead heat with premium channel HBO in the trophy hunt, both with 19 victories. Even though it fell short of HBO by the end of the ceremony––HBO leaves the six Emmy ceremonies with 30 total wins––Netflix nevertheless landed an impressive 21 victories out of its best-ever 160 nominations. The service did lose ground year-over-year, though, coming up just two trophies short of its haul in 2019.

Netflix’s biggest wins of the main ceremony included a repeat acting win for Julia Garner (“Ozark”) in Drama Supporting Actress and a surprise victory for “Unorthodox” for Movie/Limited Directing. A total of 14 programs contributed to Netflix’s 21 victories, the exact same number of winning-series as last year. Fargo wrapped its fourth season yesterday, A Teacher returned to production last month in LA and Atlanta is set to shoot two seasons back to back next year.

These were some of the highlights of FX’s plan to return to production, as laid out by Chairman, FX Networks and FX Productions John Landgraf.

Fargo season four, which stars Chris Rock, was set to premiere in April but had only shot nine of its 11 episodes before the Covid-19 production shutdown. The show, overseen by Noah Hawley, will now premiere on September 27 and the cast and crew completed production in Chicago on Tuesday September 8.

Similarly, A Teacher, the Kate Mara drama based on the 2013 feature film “safely completed four days of pick ups with about 80 cast and crew members”, according to Landgraf. It launches November 10.

“Atlanta” is returning to production in the “first half of 2021,” FX chief John Landgraf said on Wednesday.

The pandemic and Donald Glover’s busy working schedule made production on the comedy particularly difficult to map out, as Seasons 3 and 4 were also intended to be shot back to back. Before the virus messed everything up, Landgraf predicted “Atlanta’s” third season would premiere in January 2021 and Season 4 in Fall 2021.

During a virtual press conference with reporters Wednesday, Landgraf told TheWrap “it is the intent” for both seasons to be shot at once as planned, but the premiere dates have been “pushed back a little bit.”

The nominations for the 54th CMA Awards are out this morning, and they don’t include country music legend Garth Brooks as a nominee for the Entertainer of the Year award.

That’s because Brooks voluntarily disqualified himself in late July, saying that he’s won too many times — seven, to be exact, including last year’s — and wants to give the opportunity to another artist.

It was a tweet from a fan that steered Brooks to the decision.

“It said, ‘Hey, man. This guy, why doesn’t he just step down (and leave) the entertainer for the next generation?’ 100% agree,” he told press according to The Tennessean. “It’s time for somebody else to hold that award.”

That leaves the possibilities open this year to Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Luke Combs and Eric Church. May the best country star win.

Jesse Goins, one of the miners featured on Discovery’s “Gold Rush: Dave Turin’s Lost Mine,” has died at the age of 60.

“We are absolutely heartbroken to hear about Jesse Goins’ death,” a Discovery spokesperson said in a statement. “Our hearts and prayers go out to his family.”

According to TMZ, Goins was on set for the show in Colorado when he was found unconscious by a crew member Tuesday night. Per TMZ, “a medic on-site administered CPR and EMTs then arrived and rushed Jesse to the hospital, but efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful.”

Jesse Goins, who appeared in the most recent season of the Discovery series “Gold Rush,” has died, Variety has confirmed with sources. He was 60.

Goins was on set for “Gold Rush” in Colorado, when he was discovered unconscious by another crew member on Tuesday night, sources say. He was then rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. His exact cause of death has yet to be established.

After unceremoniously pulling “Taskmaster” from it schedule after only a single episode, the CW has found a new home for the U.K. acquisition.

Variety has learned that the full 10 episodes (series 8 in the U.K.) of “Taskmaster” which the CW acquired will now be available to stream for free on its CW Seed streaming service.

The move comes less than a week after “Taskmaster” was dumped from the network’s Sunday schedule due terrible debut ratings.

Hosted by comedian Greg Davies and creator Alex Horne (who act as the titular taskmaster and the taskmaster’s assistant respectively), the show debuted to a 0.1 rating among adults 18-49 and only 212,000 viewers. While a 0.1 isn’t necessarily a disastrous number in comparison with CW’s other summer fare, that total viewership figure is one of the lowest CW has managed in what is a cold summer for broadcast TV ratings overall.

Since 2015, Taskmaster has aired nine series and one special in the UK, growing from a cult delight on digital channel Dave to a Bafta-nominated, millions-attracting hit about to make its debut this autumn on major broadcaster Channel 4.

But all that’s just numbers. In real life, Taskmaster has done much, much more. Ask anyone who loves it and they’ll tell you. This unimprovably silly show in which comedians complete a series of absurd tasks, and then get together to watch the results, be judged, and laugh at themselves, is a holiday from strife. After HBO’s “Game of Thrones” dominated last year’s Emmy nominations — scoring a record 32 nods in 2019 — 2020 saw Netflix pull away from HBO in the nominations race in the absence of the latter’s drama juggernaut.

The premium cabler’s acclaimed limited series “Watchmen” led the way with 26 total nominations, followed by Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which continued its strong awards run with 20 nominations. Netflix’s leading horse was “Ozark,” which tied for third overall with HBO’s “Succession” at 18 nod.

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises in the total noms column was Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian,” which rocketed to 15 nominations for its first season, level with “Saturday Night Live” and the final season of “Schitt’s Creek.”

On the platform front, Netflix and HBO were once again way ahead of the competition. The streamer topped the premium cabler this time around by a tally of 160 to 107. A pair...

Some years, it’s easy to predict Emmy nominations and winners. And then there’s 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic put a halt on in-person campaigning, and delayed some major contenders from making it into this year’s eligibility window. It also kept Television Academy members at home, where they presumably had a chance to watch more TV than usual. Plus, as the Academy begins vetting its voting body, a more active and perhaps younger base could bring some surprises.

The result might be a shake up of the status quo. Already, there won’t be repeat winners in the top scripted categories, as last year’s big victors — drama “Game of Thrones” and comedy “Fleabag” — ended their runs and are no longer eligible.

And yet… as we’ve mentioned time and time again, TV Academy members like to stick with past nominees and winners, who often continue in the race long...
