Was going so well until the end.
Tabb8922 June 2019
I was loving the movie, until the ending. Just felt like they didn't know how to finish it. I can see what they were trying to do, but it was a poor ending, it felt rushed. I still enjoyed it though.

Some brave ideas mixed with some cliche moments...
FishBibble22 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I think the people judging the film based on whether the music is perfect is pretty unrealistic. There are only a few musicians who can create brilliant music on command, which is why 8 Mile was so exceptional. But to rate this movie like it was trash only because the music doesn't equal that, is a little unrealistic. You don't have to reach that level still tell a story that is at least interesting. The things they got right I feel are not shying away with making the main character have a pretty stigmatized condition. Mental illness, depression, panic attacks, or even more severe condiations, are pretty harshly looked down on still. So to not shy away from even making the main character look 'weak' in the eyes of a good many people, is a good thing. It takes a chance, and made the main character interesting enough to carry me through the rest of the story. That and there was decent enough acting to carry the scenes, even when there really wasn't much there. I think overall it had enough to want me to see it to the end, and the theme wasn't all over the place like I find so much writing that is by people who just try to impress each scene, rather than actually write a real story with themes, and character arcs. Unfortunately the actors were not given enough meet to last a full length movie. It would have been perfect for a tv series pilot or something, cut down to 60 mins and it would have been way tighter. Or they could have done more work to flesh out the sub themes which were a little too cliche, an not much to hold those side stories together for the viewer.

So while I can't say it was a solid 7, the fact that I got attached to the main character who didn't himself feel cliche is a win in any story. So that bumps it up for me.

Could have been way better with a tighter script.

Yea, the music could be better, but the idea in the movie were not bad for beginning musical artists, so people have to let go of expecting every single movie about music to reach the level of 8 Mile. Though I do recommend Sing Street as a much better overall movie with really good music as well.

Great effort but off-beat in the end
h_g_davies23 June 2019
I really liked the acting, the story line and the music. It is well worth watching. But I have to agree with others that I found the ending confusing because I wasn't sure what the ending was. But then I am the sort of person who complains when the ending is sugary or obvious. So,maybe it works My musical tastes aren't quite in this area but I loved the music and the general vibe. I would say this is well worth seeing - but it's not perfect.

Decent - could've been great
Simpa_stromberg21 June 2019
I liked the plot and the look of the movie, but it felt kind of empty. Acting wasn't horrible, but not particulary good either. The story never really took off, there were no "wow moment" or anything to be really emotionally moved by. Not the story, no charactors, no happenings or developments.

Easy to follow and could work as a movie for a sleepy evening, but nothing you will remember basically.

Beats, the musical "Blind Side" or a bum ride?
The Stream: The cast, other than Anthony Anderson, are forgettable in this predictable storyline.

The Big Screen: Anthony Anderson, the beats, and humor are worth the watch.

The Final Bill: Beats is definitely worth watching on Netflix with your favorite snacks.

-S2S

This week we bring to you a review of an independent movie, Beats. This Netflix Original film never hit the theaters in a large quantity. But, it is films like this that the masses need to be informed about. Do I waste my hour and fifty minutes on this or will this be a pleasant surprise? Luckily, for you all, you have us to do the hard work for you. So, let's get to it.

Let us begin with my initial reaction, "This should've played in the theaters." I'm sure Netflix does a cost benefit analysis on what to market, which movie to make mainstream and what not, but I think they left some money on the table this time.

This is a great cross breed between the Blind Side and Hustle and Flow: Oscar-type storyline with Oscar-like music. Who can resist that? I know I sure couldn't. The music is great, especially if you are a person who loves the creation of beats. My head was rocking the entire movie.

The storyline on the other hand, while tragically predictable, was actually a look into the psyche of Chicago/inner city teens in many places in America and across the world. This is a deep dive into the emotional affect off gun/gang violence in this day and age. Furthermore, this is a great view of what it's like to experience panic/anxiety attacks. Particularly in the minority community, this film is absolutely needed to convey the message about mental health issues resolution and support in the community.

This film speaks to how talented people of color can be, but without there being access to help, knowledge, and a caring individual (even selfishly at first) those same individuals daily fall victim to their situations without the world getting to see their true worth. With that said, a movie like that is necessary to be shown in the mainstream. A movie like this shouldn't be hidden solely on Netflix without significant marketing and advertising. People across the nation need this message and I think Netflix missed out on participating in that. With that said, I'd feel like I too missed an opportunity help get a person the services they need. If you are in need of mental health assistance, please seek out those services. Do not feel ashamed or alone. The first step is recognizing you need help, the second is confrontation- meeting the challenge on head first and realizing it's not as overwhelming as you think, third seeking and accepting help..

On top of that, Anthony Anderson did a phenomenal job. He was real in his portrayal of his character. In fact, I dare to say very few actors today could fill his shoes in this role. From smoking weed to son-ing former partners to hitting bottom, Anderson thrives in his role. Unfortunately, no other actor in this movie is as memorable. Netflix knew exactly where they were investing their movie.

Long story short, an independent film like this that was picked up by Netflix is absolutely needed for the culture. This movie is vulnerable, authentic and entertaining. Hip-hop fans will enjoy the beats and the view of how parts of the industry works. More importantly, the conversation this movie can spark needs to be supported. Definitely, take the time to watch this movie on Netflix.

Inspirational hard hitting film
jhayes-6502719 February 2021
Heart felt story that touches a raw nerve regarding mental health and how your life can change after a fatality however, through guidance he gets his life back on track. The only downside was the film ended rather sudden. Fantastic insight to how music is produced the beats were on fire meaning soundtrack will be on point.

Good movie, off-beat ending
h_g_davies23 June 2019
Liked the acting and the story line. Good music vibes, not totally my taste, but good. As others have said the ending was frustrating. Sometimes I like that, but I thought this was just a little confused. But well worth seeing.

Great story...ended a little flat.
knatale-1841919 June 2019
A real life look at life in Chicago for a young man dealing with loss. Inspirational story that's human at its core. The ending felt a little flat, but other than that, enjoyed it. Soundtrack is a bonus.

It had a lot of potential
jphan3624 June 2019
It fell a little flat unfortunately, I found it boring at times. I wanted more. Dave East could have had a better character as well.

Excellent film worth watching
camstuart0122 June 2019
There have been a few reviews that mention the lack of cinematic climax: don't let that put you off watching what is essentially an excellent film.

August is a 17 year old boy who has become a recluse after witnessing the murder of his big sister. He suffers from anxiety and panic attacks and disappears into creating beats as a means of escape. He is accidentally discovered by a down-on-his-luck music producer Romelo Reese who has resorted to working as a school security guard at the school where his estranged wife is principal.

The core of this story revolves around August and Romelo's unlikely relationship as Romelo attempts to get August to break free of the trauma of his sister's murder, while Romelo attempts to right the wrongs of his own past.

The story lacks the big Hollywood climax that film audiences will be used to but weaves a story worth telling. Dubbed an "ode to Chicago's south side" and the music which is synonymous with its environment, it really is a personal story of how the hardship, violence and fear affect one individual and just how difficult it is for August to navigate the world once he has witnessed it first hand. For me, the lack of climax is fitting: the film is less about making it big, and more about figuring out how to cope.

The film is well made - the camera work, editing are all very good, with some nice cinematic touches. The soundtrack though is the real high point. There is an excellent blend of existing music and that "created" by August and this is, in my opinion, where the film creates its "ode to the south side".

As far as created for Netflix content goes, this is once you'll want to watch.

Soundtrack on point, performances not.
Troy_Campbell30 June 2019
A hip-hop tale of a 17 y.o. musical wunderkind who turns to his keyboard and mixer after the traumatic murder of his sister on the hard-knock streets of Chicago. The plot follows well-worn beats (ahem) in the troubled-kid-genius subgenre offering very little in the way of narrative freshness, but there's an urgency to the drama that propels the film along nicely nevertheless. Khalil Everage is wooden and awkward in the key role of August, whilst Anthony Anderson is hard to like as the down-on-his-luck mentor seeking a return to former musical-manager glory. Importantly though, the soundtrack is on point. The central rap created for the film is electric, with Seandrea 'Dreezy' Sledge slinging slick vocals on top of August's unique tunes in a breakthrough block concert - the movie's standout scene. There are some toe-tapping moments and an energetic tempo, but a strict adherence to convention and some odd central performances keeps Beats from landing hard.

I see where they wanted to take it.
bouchermitch-6817021 June 2019
For what it was, It was terrible. I feel like they tried to re-create Hustle and Flow but with a DJ, It wasn't the case in this one. There was no climax and the storyline felt like it was going nowhere, Decent time watch and that is all.

REALISTIC and FRESH
BEATS is one of the most realistic and fresh movies I have seen from Netflix in awhile. It was not a rehash of another "hood" movie. A lot of thought was put into this movie. The acting was excellent, the writing was inventive, and the characters themselves were relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. And I give big accolades to Anthony Anderson. He was on point. Congrats!!

Terrible
nora-843078 May 2020
Looking at the review I'm SHOCKED at how many high ratings there are. I don't know where to begin, so I'll just make it short: this movie was terrible. It started off on a good note and looked like it had potential. Then it started having all these cheesy and cliche moment, okay, I can live with that, the potential is still there. Almost all the way through and I started to really question it, there was 10 minutes left of the movie and it looked like it was going nowhere, and as I expected, it didn't. The ending ended them up right back to where they started, sure there was some character development, but definitely not enough to make it a good ending. I wanted to see change, something good happen, or even bad! I didn't just sit through the entire movie, dealing with all the cliche and cheesiness of it just to have it end right where it started. A waste of time honestly.

Moonlight meets Hustle and Flow
PennyForMyThoughts8 July 2019
I don't think that the movie was quite as good as Moonlight but it had a similar story, a young African American man coming of age in a tough situation with an older mentor who is not family.

Good acting and the music ("Beats") were straight fire.

Like some others have said, the ending was the weakest part of the film by far.

Put it next to Hustle and flow
jamesdkeicher21 June 2019
This is an incredible movie. A young reclusive kid with a lot of talent overcomes the trauma of being struck by the bullet that killed his sister. A down and out music manager with a shady past discovers the kid and himself in this emotionally driven music drama. I grabbed my own keyboard and started playing as I watched the creative processes shown in this film. Bangers all day on the soundtrack. This one for the library

Cliche mixtape - skip this track!
chan_tks8 December 2019
High intensity start that appeared promising. However it flatlined throughout the movie with standard neighbourhood cliches of violence, industry greed, police brutality, marriage breakdown and teenage romance.

The focus on music and character development was faded into the background like a fake cover skin.

Save yourself from disappointment, skip this track.

Felt like I was thrown into Chicago
cincikid-3487620 June 2019
I have never been to Chicago, but what I hear and see on the news and movies, this seemed like a perfect depiction of it. The acting was great, especially for a guy I have never seen before. The music was straight fire, and it showed the shady side of the record biz. Anthony Anderson was great, could really feel his drive to make it back on top and really help this kid achieve his dream. Great movie.

The music is so bad
nickdnk20 June 2019
One of the big problems with films about music in cases where the music isn't from the real world is that the music is usually awful. This fact is what made movies like A Star Is Born stand out: Lady Gaga did her thing. The "beats" that come out of this film and the accompanying rap is absolute trash. Cringeworthily bad. I literally think I could make better music myself, and I gave up music years ago. Aside from this the acting is somewhat poor and the story cliché. I tried to watch it waiting for a flight at the airport, but staring into the wall at Charles de Gaulle quickly became more interesting.

Good concept, beautiful scenes but bad development
manuelklepser26 September 2020
This movies concept is great, and it offers some beautifully shots of how Chicago really looks. But the main character's actor stops showing any emotion or even feeling like the character we had known in the first hour of the movie. The ending feels very rushed to say the least, which ends the movie on a dissatisfying note.

Good Start and then the script just dies.
toxity10125 June 2019
Apart from the cringy dialogue and scenes where objects disappear in a few seconds (cigarettes, guns), the cast feels emotionless in emotional scenes and the ending feels so forced like if the budget ran out... Not bad but uhmm bad
