Sarcasm hidden within a children's modern fairytale.
gelf-4625821 February 2021
Within the story structure of a romantic comedy and the thematic structure of a classic children's film this feature captures the irony and sarcasm towards both themes about as well as the original Shrek film did. To be clear, this is NOT an animated feature. Rather it is a live action film with an animated character, like Pete's Dragon. The animated character now done in CGI of course.

Easter eggs galore for adult watchers from the Imperial March doorbell to the film opening with a collage of Marvel-Disney characters, yet a pile of DC comics being dumped on the table at some point.

Smart well made film. Good to watch with or without kids present. As long as you are young of mind and heart. Feel good.

Benjamin Franklin Ainsworth marathon

"Did you put your mouth on the squirrel?" "I had to." "Was he clean?" "Probably not."

"Can you point the Jack and Rose at me?"

"Holy unanticipated occurrences!"

I love when it feels like they made a movie just for me. I haven't watched something so fast after first finding out about it in forever. I didn't even know about the book of this which surprises me, 'cos I loved Kate DiCamillo's other stuff like Because of Winn-Dixie, and the setup alone would've grabbed me as it did here - but I guess it just slipped by me. When I saw the poster on Disney+ I felt like Homer Simpson and Mr Sparkle 'cos this is pretty much my Second Life avatar, a little blonde girl and her crazy squirrel. There isn't a lot more to say, I was just always going to love this, but for what it's worth it's just really well executed too, great effects and performances (especially Matilda Lawler and Alyson Hannigan). For me, an instant fave. I really needed a surprise like this today.

High marks for family fun
josephbrewster-8827921 February 2021
The high ratings, on my part at least, are due to expectations. This is a Disney movie, and I hoped for a heart warming family flick I could enjoy with my three children, ranging in age from 10 to 17. This was just what a wanted. It's not brilliant, it's not groundbreaking, but it lovable, wholesome, lighthearted, uplifting and just plain fun.

Perhaps others will find enjoyment with this, fair enough if so. For me, though, it's average

Bit of a waste, in the end.

'Flora & Ulysses' isn't a bad watch, but it doesn't utilise a cool premise or a strong showing from youngster Matilda Lawler. The latter fairly impressed me, especially early on. Behind her, Ben Schwartz is OK and Alyson Hannigan is, as seemingly always, likeable.

Given how interesting the concept is, the film barely even touches on Ulysses' abilities - when they do, e.g. at the diner, then it is actually nicely created with the effects, slow motion et al. Instead they focus on a familial story, which didn't intrigue me whatsoever. I did like the comic book onscreen graphics, mind.

Perhaps others will find enjoyment with this, fair enough if so. For me, though, it's average and forgettable.

Flying squirrel

This was a cute superpower story. The squirrel was cute and the actors like Ben schwartz were good.

With Marvel and DC comics, and Marvel references. Check it out when you can

Book was totally butchered!
edwade56 March 2021
The little girl is pretty cute but let's be real, almost NONE of the things that occurred in this movie occurred in the book. As a fan of Kate DiCamillo books, I'm sorely disappointed in this movie.

fun family entertainment
cyllwfllw20 February 2021
I'm a 40 year old middle aged single comic book nerd and I wish I had a fun family like Floras. This movie was not only entertaining but made me hope and wish every child had a fun adventure like this family. Floras father was absolutely amazing and every daughter should have a superhero dad like him. I was laughing and tearing up all at the same time. This is a great film for every family.

Fun For The Whole Family Warning: Spoilers
This week on The E Jungle your favorite animals talked about a widely known children's novel now being shown as a film on Disney+ and it is none other than Flora and Ulysses. Overall the main consensus would be that it is a great film for children as it is cute and fun in design but it is very hit or miss for the parents, mainly in the fact that it lacks anything to draw in the older audience like adult jokes. The acting in the movie is great and we gave special praise to Kate Micucci and Danny Pudi for their specific performances in the film. Though the acting was great, the writing wasn't so up to par, maybe because it was difficult to adapt the superhero squirrel from the novel, we aren't so sure. There was confusion as to exactly how Ulysses gains his powers, and there was controversy on how the father was played but the film as a whole had it's comedic moments like the rivalry that appears between Ulysses and the man trying to catch him who is the only real villain in the movie. The best gag of the movie was the bit at the end when the Jack and Rose statue falls apart but only Jack sinks. We also really enjoyed the CGI displayed in Ulysses but not so much in the cat. In the end we would have liked to see some kind of plot twist with the child being blind becoming the villain to give his character more headway in the film and we were left asking ourselves if this could possibly become an anthology series at this point. As a whole the plot of the story revolved around the use of the divorce the parents were going through as a storytelling technique to make the ending more gratifying for the children who the movie is targeted towards.

Disappointing
nikkidavis-1570721 February 2021
The movie starts out great but takes a nosedive with the addition of the animal control storyline. Yet again another great book turned awful movie.

Nice twist for the superhero genre
JBingeWatcher19 February 2021
Many aspects in this movie work surprisingly well together. The performances are great and the dialogue works. It's a love letter to all the writers and comics out there. It works for the kids and is able to make a smile on the faces from the adults. The best thing is that the leading kid feels as a kid. She's smart, but not annoying.

I guess Disney couldn't get the rights to 'Squirrel Girl'?
mastermixdisaster19 February 2021
It's not a terrible movie. Worth a watch, especially with the kids.

I just feel like an ACTUAL 'Squirrel Girl' movie would've been much better.

Keep your expectations low and you might love it
daisukereds16 March 2021
It's a cute little movie that is well above competent. Like with all children movies, I don't know if it works with today's crowd, but is fun enough and has good messages.. so maybe they'll like it. Ulysses itself is an adorable piece of CGI, but he isn't the focus of the movie. Matilda's character Flora is really well written, and her acting (emotions, delivery, etc.) is really good for a child actor. She carries the movie very well during her scenes with her smile and cynicism.

After watching the trailer, I didn't know what to expect.. but it was very simple (in the best way possible), low to the ground and didn't go THAT route at all. I had fun for a bit.

** The used art is a bit.. off-putting (for a Disney movie that is). Had they nailed the style and quality in the prominent use of drawings throughout the film, this would have gotten a higher score for me.

Hero Squirrel
rewwestern5 March 2021
This was my three year old son's first live action movie he watched all the way through. He has since watched it 5 times in a span of three days. It wasn't so unbearable that I couldn't stand to watch it several times. However I can't get past one character but that just me. In all it's a cute kids movie.

Great CGI. Terrible everything else.
dennisforbes21 February 2021
The CGI for the squirrel is generally fantastic, and makes for a humorous, lovable character.

The movie around the squirrel, however, is just a giant downer. If you've gathered the kids around for a fun Disney tale you'll quickly discover it's a movie about cynicism, divorce, dysfunction, and an array of people who are motivated only by a quest to harm animals.

It's just a giant downer. Add that with some terrible acting and everything just falls apart. Add that the director seems to constantly do long hanging shots on the lead actress making some "quirky" face or other -- bizarrely -- and you've got a movie that's just entirely unenjoyable to watch.

Perfect movie for family night!
jprice-9608120 February 2021
This movie was exactly what we wanted for our movie night! We all laughed so many times and enjoyed the more sentimental moments too. Alyson Hannigan and Ben Schwartz were excellent! Matilda was such a little spit fire. All of my boys loved Benjamin Ainsworth as well. We will definitely be watching this one again!

Above fair family, kinda funny adventure
rndhyd27 October 2021
I rarely type reviews, but felt the need to so here. I don't know why.

This was not moving or overly funny, etc. It was heartfelt, but had a good pace -- not too boring. Although, I can even last a boring movie because I have 2 big screens, so my attention is often to something other than than the movie.

The squirrel is not over-endowed with powers, such as any Dolittle flick, which I downloaded, but could not watch. It was too ridiculous to see non-human animals talk.

Fair good-time flick, especially with kids. I'm generally too old (at thrice+ that of a teenager) to have enjoyed this.

Cute for the kids but adults may find it boring.
cruise0123 February 2021
2 out of 5 stars.

Flora and Ulysses is a forgettable family film with a theme of comic books and superheroes. With a plot about Flora (Matilda Lawler) who is obsessed with superheroes and comic books. While feeling loss with her parents dealing with separation Phyllis (Alyson Hannigan) and George (Ben Schwartz). When a squirrel was almost killed by a robotic vaccuum. Flora rescues it. And named him Ulysses which he has super strength and can fly. While Ulysses arch enemy is an animal control guy who is obsesses in hunting that one squirrel down.

The plot is thin and forgettable. Floras parents are struggling with conflict. George is stuck in a dead end boring job. Phyllis is having writers block and journalist interfering with her personal life. While Ulysses does cause some chaos in there lives with wrecking havoc at a donut shop. And writing poems in Phyllis typewriter. While the animal control guy is after the family to get that squirrel. Floras neighbor friend William tags along but he is temporarily blind cause of stress.

Some of these characters are annoying. Villain is cheesy and annoying. The visual effects are bad. The humor and script is cheesy with its dialogue. The cast ensemble acting is not any better.

It is one family film that adults will find it boring but kids may find it cute.

I loved this movie and adore the young actress playing Flora. She is a gem. Adorable and grounded. She lights up the screen. And it's always a joy to see Alyson Hannigagan in anything.

Omg relax it's a kids movie!
BeadifulDreams13 March 2021
So many bad reviews miss the point, it's a kids movie. No it isn't Oscar material but it was a cute diversion on a Saturday afternoon. I'm sorry for those who read the book and hated the movie, but that's what usually happens with a book gets turned into a movie. The only thing that really bothered me was how they portrayed Billy being blind, it just made me uncomfortable. Other than that it's fun and cute and I was really happy to see Allyson Hannigan again.

Literally the worst movie I have ever seen.
jakesickmeyer26 February 2021
Super hero movies should be unrealistic, but not unrealistically terrible. It starts with the squirrel being sucked up by a robot vacuum dying then coming back being able to fly read write and have super strength. The movie also relies on making fun of a blind kid and his disability for 75% of the jokes.

Uneven, but mostly fun
bill_allison27 June 2022
The opening tie-in to Marvel Comics and some of the hidden movie "Easter Eggs" were a nice touch. The CGI squirrel was great, but should have had more screen time because it was more entertaining than the humans. The CGI cat was unexpectedly great as a weirdly comic villain. I wish they had focused more on the messages on the typewriter as those served as important plot points. The scenes without the squirrel ranged from serious to slapstick to boring. The film is not bad, but with better directing it could have been better. Adapting a classic book to film requires an expert touch.

This is worth watching, but don't expect the classic it could have been.
