Light Summer Viewing

We really enjoyed this short series, and I picked up some excellent money-saving "green" cleaning tips, such as the use of citric acid powder for just about everything. (It's cheap, easy to store, and Amazon delivers.) A young woman needs to rentshare her house to avoid losing it, but as an intern in a big company she works all the hours God sends so there's no time to clean. Enter the House Helper, a young man with a troubled past who cleans houses and declutters people's lives. The girl finally ends up sharing with three previous classmates, and their lives are examined individually and collectively.

The writers deal with some serious issues: incest, loneliness, losses of many kinds, industrial harassment, especially lack of communication. Yet they manage to use a light touch--it's not heavy drama or cringe-making at any time. The person I watched it with wondered if they left the door open for a second season. We'll see, next year.

Oh, and by the way--heating flat beer in the microwave really does help in cleaning it, much more than the old water-and-vinegar formula I had been using, and it doesn't leave an unpleasant smell.

Good Enough

Your House helper started really strong, but didn't pull through Minus: -Lack of chemistry for the main couple -Got boring halfway through -No surprises, no twists Possitives: -Slice of life theme -The second leads' romance was so strong that overpowered the whole drama -Interesting side stories -Good acting Overall, it was just good, with some sparks of solid slice of life drama and age of youth vibes.

Quite involving and deep series

This isn't a superficial series like the title may suggest. It's surprisingly sensitive story about people with trauma of different types and the characters are quite quirky and unpredictable. The house helper helps people with more than just their home messes but the underlying traumas that these messy people have. The issues are serious but aren't treated in a heavy handed manner. The series gets more involving as things go along. The first episodes need some concentration to figure out the relationships but once that is done it's fine. This is a good role for the cast members including Ha Seok Jin and Bona who are generally likeable and watchable. Especially liked Lee Min Young as the manager. I wasn't bored at all during the 16 episodes because of the many characters there is quite a lot of story for each. Along the way it is fun to learn about cleaning and tidying and it's quite relatable since there are people I know who really are messy and need help. I think many will recognise messy people they know in this show.

Who would not want a house helper?

Warning: Spoilers
. Kim Ji-woon (Ha Seok-jin) works as a House Helper a blend of "Mary Poppins", Dr. Phil, and House Brothers. He is an organizing and cleaning expert and only takes cases where he feels like he can improve the home environment as well as his client's lives. Im Da-young (Bona) is a young woman with a very chaotic life. She is an intern at an advertising company and works long hours trying to get hired on permanent. As the only daughter of a deceased architect, she lives in the house her father built and keeps it somewhat as a memorial to him. Her loneliness and work life are driving factors in the messy state of her house. She is riddled with debt from her late father but determined to keep the house he built. Her life changes dramatically when "Mr. Kim" agrees to help her restore order so that she can take on roommates to help with her financial situation. Her roommates turn out to be a couple of old high school friends who she became estranged with. Can these women get their messy lives back on track? Can "Mr. Kim" truely work miracles?

I really loved this story. All of the relationships were interesting and the interplay between the characters and various story lines was compelling. There are even little household tips to pick up on and really, who wouldn't want a gorgeous House Helper to make sense of the chaos of modern life. It ended nicely and the length of the series was just right to fully tell the stories. The only slight drawback was not to see the story comletely through to what happened after - but it was pretty clear where things were going so that was not a major fail point for me. I loved the central female lead. She was as kind as she was beautiful.

Could have been good

I liked the first 6 episodes (until the last scene of the 6th). Interesting story, decent acting, nice humor. And then the cringe made its appearance.

The last scene of the 6th episode is ridiculous. And then the 3 women became stupid. It's like they changed the writer and director. I managed to watch 2 more episodes before giving up.

Having said (written) that, I know that many kdrama fans won't be bothered a lot by those things. But if you can't handle cringey kdramas, this is definitely not for you.
