I thoroughly enjoyed this movie

I picked this film up not knowing much about it. I've really been digging movies from Taiwan as of late, and although I usually watch their comedies, I haven't seen too many horror films. This one looked right up my alley.

The premise of the film is pretty simple; an intelligent kid is transferred to a special school for boys that allows them to excel in every subject, with one lucky student getting the chance to attend Harvard. The thing is, one student has already been chosen dude to his superior work. But how did he achieve this? Was it just hard work, or is something more sinister at play?

I liked the premise, and although the whole noose aspect of the movie really rubbed me the wrong way (considering the high suicide rate of Asian students, particularly when it comes to their schooling), the story progressed at an even pace, never once appearing boring or stale. The actors were all likeable and really made you care about what was transpiring, and although the reasoning behind true intentions of those involved left something to be desired, it was still an enjoyable watch for me.

Overall, this is a film that many people will dismiss simply because there isn't anything truly scary about it. But I'll say this; academic pressure, especially that which is this extreme, is horrifying. Telling a child that his entire existence is contingent on doing superlative work in school can be scary, and that alone made this movie more than a little chilling for me. Some of the scenes involving the parents were an especially difficult watch.

I'd recommend this film to anyone who likes a good story with horror elements. I'm starting to wonder if it was a Manhua, as the story really could be a long form illustrated story. Enjoyable film that deserves some love.
