Simple but decent
anger-728 May 2019
I dont expect Netflix to become HBO (although I wish it did!), but small productions like this justify the monthly subscription. Everything about this show is mediocre, but the pace is good and the actors help along with the script to create interesting characters. It is similar to casa di papel in this way, without the beautiful ladies! Not a bad show to spend your time.

watch in spanish wt subs. some one liners, overacting, shaky camera.
surfisfun9 March 2019
This series is a nearly carbon copy of a series call El Marginal! Good cast, wondering if some of those criminal actors are real crazy criminal gang banger! lots of swear Mexican style. at episode 8 now, very engrossing. one of the best Mexican series . my vote is way funnier /crazier actors then Casa de Papel. even acting/direction is better. more of a guy show. the director of the jail is hilarious.

Let s try to be realistic here...
fscramo20 December 2018
Let me be clear and concise: - it is not better then La Casa de Papel, but is a completly different story, with a different Budget. Stop Comparing! - It is true that the actors are not Oscar materials, but again we are talking about a series with probably a low Budget - the script is good, well done and keep you hooked all the time

If you are looking for some good story, binge watching and if you can understand pretty well Mexican slang, then go for it. It will keep you entertained!

Good, but not the best from Netflix
ealeganus-7903313 June 2019
Is not better than La Casa de Papel as some people might say. The acting sometimes is very, very bad. The storyline is interesting, but I find it a bit chaotic. Hands down for the actor which plays Santito. He should really make it to Hollywood. And... let's not forget his line: "i kill you with my teeth".

Ridiculous but saved by funny Mexican dialogue
victorherm5422 December 2018
The show is ridiculous right from the start, given that Lazaro would even agree to undertake such a mission for...a judge? that he is completeley loyal to and for whose daughter he would risk his life? Why? The acting by some, like the Nazis, and the judge's bodyguard Jack, and the judge's daughter, is often atrocious. However, the show does have some hilarious dialogue that is very Mexican-slang centered, words like "puñetas" get thrown around and there are funny insults and one-liners thrown around mainly by Tavares and by Peniche the prison director, those characters are just...funny. Roxana the sexy assistant and Marcial the prison guard also have their moments -all in all the show has this underlying comedic element that just works in a weird way. The main actor who plays Lazaro/Dante holds his own in an understated way, and Santito does too but he can be too much and you grow tired of his antics. The depictions of the prison living conditions and the MS type gang are interesting although not sure how accurate.

An enjoyable watch
mak_vice20 December 2018
Just finished this series in a full run through (no sleep) it kept me that hooked. At some points it was daft and humorous but it added to the feel of it. The character build was great and not dragged... I definitely hope they carry on with a second series

It's funny, absurd and kind of realistic at the same time
boysayanara31 May 2020
First, I really burst in laughing when I saw Aryan Brotherhood gang in a Mexican prison. Really? It's the same as if there was a Norwegian gang somewhere in Black Africa, lol. Especially in one episode, when one of them happens to be a Russian. Really weird)) At the same time the inner part of the prison and the prison life is shown vividly: staff corruption, tatooed guys everywhere, bad conditions. The plot itself is simple and straightforward. You can easily whatch it with a couple of beers if you forget about the absurd aspects. Santito is rocking and making the show. Real pendeho. Worth watching if don't have too high expectations.

Convinced the prison scenes were real
Vuvm030715 July 2021
The cast of characters are phenomenal. David chocarro as Santito was a standout and deserves recognition for such a convincing addict and sociopath. I was amazed at his performance and absolutely convinced they Used a real con for his portrayal. His twitchy behavior , facial expressions, mania were spot on.

There are moments where you need to suspend disbelief but the portrayal of the prison no doubt mirrors some reality...hierarchy, gangs, corruption.

Some very brutal scenes, some genuinely funny moments and moments of insight into human nature and the basic good in people who are labelled criminals.

Not a fan of the photography where it seems we are sneaking a peak from behind a shelf or door. Been conditioned to expect something to happen which those shots. Nothing does.

Standout performances by all cast.

Why does everyone compare to casa de papel, it's a completely different story and both unique in their own way. Love the Spanish productions, great talent all around and much deserving of a second season.

Interesting series produced by Netflix, I liked the characters of Tavares and Santito were strong performances of this series. A lot of brutality and a lot of humor.

This Rocks !!!
The_Rodney29 December 2018
What a classic. However, my classics are: Repo Man, Big Meat Eater, Trailer Park Boys . . . the cheesier the better.

The characters are all brilliant. The lip synching straight outta a 60's Godzilla flick. The dialogue is perfect. Plot tight tight tight.

So much to love. Perfect.

Good! 🔒

I mean, it's a good series but nothing more. Watchable and gets a kind of excitement for watching the next episode. Like the idea to get inside a dangerous prison with gangs and find solutions! 🇺🇲

Great fun
MadamWarden17 December 2018
Another review said better than La casa de papel. Most definitely not! Completely ridiculous and over the top plot. If it was slapstick comedy I would give it more slack.

That said, great prison series with great characters who look scary but behave more like they are talent in a hairdressing salon than a dirty Mexican prison. I love the colours, sets and costumes which seem really authentic. You feel they are in a real prison except that no one is really scary or baddass.

The scrawny, good looking hero somehow takes over the whole joint without doing much besides getting beat up a few times. The logic of the plot is beyond hilarious.

I am enjoying it tho. Great characters and crazy plot. Really entertaining if you are prepared to suspend logic. B

It is weird, but good enough to get hooked!
G3Wire17 June 2019
Very interesting plot in this one, why people here compare it to la casa de papel, I have no idea. Totally different style, plot, people, scenery...

I feel like almost all the characters did their job, acting was on point. I only had a problem with Linda and Jack, sometimes it just did not feel real enough for me to care about them. Dante and santito really made this up for me, especially santito with all his crazyness, well acted. The gangs, the rivarly, this a good "touch" on the series, made all of it more realistic.

I wish I knew Mexican, tho i only had eng subs and it was fine for me.

If I have to pull some negativity out from the series, its Dante's fighting skills, he is a ex-marine. I was kind of waiting for him to a bit more physically strong in fights but...

All in all, totally worth watching! :)

Enjoyable Nonsense.
pwrussell-1475511 May 2019
Above average nonsense that keeps you watching, despite yourself, manages not to descend into total silliness or incoherence as so many of these shows do. Enjoyable.

A must watch if you're into crime, drug and prison television!
arjanvanhelden30 May 2019
In short I found El Recluso to be really dope. The characters are very unique and interesting. The way the story progresses with the characters got me binging hard in a very long time. IMO watch in the original sound for the full experience! El Recluso kept me entertained through every episode, the mixture between inside and outside of the prison bounds make it very diverse and keeps you interested throughout. A definate must watch!

Right up there with Breaking Bad
lighterthanair-8256929 December 2018
Excellent acting, an interesting plot, engaging interactions between the various factions, and only limited suspension of disbelief. Even Santito, who is certainly not a "little saint" was likable - almost lovable. What a great actor to transform into that role. I'm hoping for a season 2.

Unbelievable how bad this show is
philson-1645621 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Bad acting on the verge of comedy although it is supposed to be a serious prison story. The plot is bad, incoherent, plenty of illogical and just plain stupid situations. I am upset about myself for having watched to the last episode. As for the character of Santito, for me it was nearly unbearable to watch him, I hoped throughout the whole season that he would get killed. Do yourself a favour and pass this show as it is a complete waste of your time. In fact I have never seen a show so disappointing that I felt compelled to write a negative review, but in this case I considered it my dury to warn people about its mediocrity.

shiatali31325 July 2019
I usually do not like latin american tv-shows, but this one is great. Every free second I got, i would watch this show. I am waiting for a season 2, in the mean while, I will give La Casa De Papel a chance.

Rubbish as usual from Telemundo
qui_j17 October 2019
This is simply rubbish, low budget, bad acting and a chaotic plot with high school level editing. The scenes are randomly stuck together in such a way that nothing makes sense. It was impossible to get past the first episode since nothing made any sense.
