I think we are getting bored of stories that pack too many twists and turns and Kaappaan is the example for that. Back when Ayan got released, the way K V Anand narrated the story felt fresh. But, now it is like eating Maggi that's been prepared two hours ago.
Tamil directors should seriously consider including songs just for the sake of it. There is a chase(more like a stalk)sequence here that occurs amidst a song. No one of the songs feel like they're necessary for the story.
There is no logic in some scenes: a SPG officer sharing an adult joke with the PM, children in Kashmir singing a song about unity in Tamil(really?!), a suspended officer being admitted into a crime scene, a cabinet consisting of people who know Tamil(surprisingly) and a heroine who is there just to pass the Bechdel test(the film fails in that too).
The film feels really long. Some scenes test your patience. But, the climax makes up for the lag. Kaappaan wants to be a story about patriotism, a story about farmers and a racy thriller. Sadly, it feels like a haphazard mixture that could've turned into a awesome thriller but didn't. And also, why does every film want to talk about farmer's and their plight? Inability to think of a good storyline? Watch this movie if you're a fan of twists and turns.
