The Two Popes

¡Wow! Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson y Daisy Edgar-Jones protagonizarán la película ‘Here Comes the Flood’.
Image

Wiseguy: Jonathan Banks reprising his role from the ’80s TV series for a new feature film
Stephen J. Cannell
Stephen J. Cannell created or co-created a whole lot of popular TV shows, including The Rockford Files, The A-Team, Renegade, The Greatest American Hero, 21 Jump Street, and The Commish. Somewhere in the mix was the crime drama series Wiseguy, which Cannell co-created with Frank Lupo. That show aired on CBS for a total of 75 episodes over four seasons, running from 1987 to the end of 1990… and industry scooper Jeff Sneider of TheInSneider.com hears that it’s getting a feature film revival, with Jonathan Banks (who is best known these days for playing hitman and fixer Mike Ehrmantraut on Breaking Bad) on board to reprise his role from the original series!

Sneider’s sources inform him that The Pope’s Exorcist producers Sophie Cassidy and Jeff Katz are joining forces with Stephen J. Cannell Productions to bring the Wiseguy movie to the screen. In case you need a refresher, the...

Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson thriller coming to Netflix
Image
Back in 2020, it was big news in film circles when Netflix picked up the original script by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Simon Kinberg for Here Comes The Flood in an undisclosed seven-figure deal. Then, the agreement for this not-so-conventional heist movie seems to have fallen into the shadows, with the early possibility that Jason Bateman will direct an iteration that will never occur.

Five years on, and the whole project is back on track, with the directing duties, production team, and principal cast officially announced. Here Comes The Flood, based on Kingberg’s screenplay, will have a strong cast featuring Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jones in key roles.

Oscar-nominated Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles takes on directing duties, and Samson Mucke is executive producer. The production is yet to start, so no trailers or release date are available.

What is Here Comes The Flood going to be about?

So far, the plot details are pretty sketchy,...

‘Two Prosecutors’ Review: Sergei Loznitsa Makes a Striking Return to Fiction Filmmaking in Chilling Fable Set Across Stalin’s Purges
Image
This is a film about Russia, set in Russia, and made by a filmmaker educated there, yet it was produced by France, Germany, the Netherlands, Latvia, Romania, and Lithuania. And that is very apparent with the mass of production vanity plates prior to an opening shot.

“Two Prosecutors”’ director Sergei Loznitsa claims Ukraine as the closest element of his post-Soviet heritage, and resides in Berlin, but he has all the attributes of a dissident filmmaker, criticizing and scrutinizing something he intimately knows. It would be nice to see Russian-produced films made under a culture of free expression, but our relative compensation are programmes and films with English dialogue like “Chernobyl” and “Doctor Zhivago”, numerous bad ones with worse accents, and also “Two Prosecutors”, shot in Latvia, but authentic as anything.

Loznitsa made arguably his best film to date with the astonishingly prescient “Donbass” in 2018; the pandemic and his extraordinary jones...

Denzel Washington & Robert Pattinson To Star In Their First Movie Together, And It’s A Bank Heist Thriller
Image
Robert Pattinson and Denzel Washington are now set to star in their first movie together. Pattinson got his start in young adult franchise movies, first playing Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and then taking the role of Edward Cullen in the massively popular Twilight franchise. After the conclusion of Twilight, he has starred in other blockbusters like 2022's The Batman, but he has also worked in smaller projects with a number of notable directors and co-stars including The Lighthouse (opposite Willem Dafoe), The King (opposite Timothée Chalamet), and High Life (opposite Juliette Binoche).

His newest co-star would certainly count among those notable names. There have been a great number of both critically and commercially successful Denzel Washington movies. In addition to blockbusters such as the Equalizer trilogy, Unstoppable, Safe House, and American Gangster helping push his filmography's cumulative worldwide box office haul past $4.9 billion, the...

Here Comes the Flood: Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson teaming on a Netflix heist movie
Denzel Washington
It seems like nowadays, no studio on the planet can pull off the kind of star teaming Netflix can – at least not on original fare. As far as dream duos go, they don’t get much better than Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson, who the streamer has signed to co-star in their upcoming heist flick, Here Comes the Flood. The movie, which is set to be directed by Fernando Meirelles, is written by Simon Kinberg, and is described by Deadline as “is described as an unconventional heist flick about a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double crosses.” Daisy Edgar-Jones, a rising star herself, is set to co-star in one of the main roles. No news yet on who plays who.

Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones to Star in Heist Thriller ‘Here Comes the Flood’
Image
Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones will star in Here Comes the Flood, a Simon Kinberg-penned crime thriller that Fernando Meirelles will direct for Netflix.

Meirelles is also producing the feature with Oscar nominee Kinberg and Audrey Chon, the latter two via their Genre Films banner.

Netflix picked up the original screenplay in 2020, making a splashy seven-figure deal to win a heated spec script auction. It was a markedly different era, with the streaming wars in full swing and the streamer’s film unit being run by Scott Stuber, who always had Netflix’s wallet open. Still, the project survived (at one point Jason Bateman was in talks to direct an iteration but a deal never took), and now five years later has attracted top-shelf talent.

Logline details are being kept in the dark, but Flood is being described as an unconventional heist movie about a bank guard,...

Image
Netflix announced five new series and two films as part of its 2025 advertiser upfronts presentation in New York on Wednesday, including a new untitled series from Dan Levy.

On the scripted series side, Netflix announced three new titles, perhaps the most anticipated of which is a new show from “Schitt’s Creek” creator and star Levy and “Bottoms” star Rachel Sennott. Described as a family crime comedy, the eight-episode series is set to go into production in 2025. The show follows two “deeply incapable siblings” who are blackmailed into entering into a life of organized crime, a logline reads. Taylor Ortega will star in the series as will Laurie Metcalf.

“I’m so excited to be bringing this truly chaotic family story to life with Netflix. Thrilled with the team we’re building both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Taylor Ortega is going to become a household name...

Ben Stiller's $128M Dark Comedy Lands On Netflix's Global Charts 18 Years Later
Image
Ben Stiller's dark comedy, which made over $128 million at the box office, has landed on Netflix's global chart 18 years after its release. Stiller has been a consistent comedic presence since the 1990s, starting with his sketch comedy series, The Ben Stiller Show. He went on to make guest appearances in television shows like Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and Extras, the last of which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

After beginning his career in television, Stiller transitioned to film and starred in a string of successful studio comedies, including romantic comedies like There's Something About Mary and Along Came Polly, and more absurdist and satirical style comedies such as Zoolander, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Tropic Thunder. Since the mid-2010s, Stiller has shifted back to television, directing episodes of Severance and other shows. However, many of Stiller's...

One of Russell Crowe’s Last Leading Roles in a Tentpole Is a Streaming Success Despite 43% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Among the biggest stars of his generation, Russell Crowe seems to be content doing things his own way now. He hasn't headlined a tentpole in quite some time, but he's sneakily been having a ball with B-movies such as Unhinged and The Pope's Exorcist. His fans must've been somewhat disappointed by his absence in Ridley Scott's long-awaited Gladiator II, a sequel to the classic original, which won Crowe a Best Actor Academy Award. But they seem to be satisfying their Crowe cravings by tuning into his final collaboration with Scott, the 2010 film Robin Hood, which is climbing up the streaming charts on Max.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie has been doing consistently well on Max this month, accumulating a total of 373 points. It found spots on the top 10 charts twice in a row. Positioned as a gritty reboot of the oft-adapted legend — it was released in the wake...

This Modern Classic Monster Movie is Now Streaming: “Tight, fun, vicious, and brimming with practical FX”
Image
You know what movie fans love doing? They love demanding more original movies yet failing to show up to auditoriums whenever those original movies do release. Why is Heart Eyes, the freshest slasher this side of Scream released in years, sitting at a worldwide gross of just $32 million? How did Cuckoo, a “bold, stylish, exquisitely fun” Neon release, only manage $6.7 million? M3GAN 2.0 is gonna make bank, I guarantee it, and I guess that’s just the world we live in. Not that I’m begrudging that loveable little robot her acclaim, but I’d love to see more original titles cross that threshold into uber-profitability. After all, the more original horror performs well, the more original horror we get.

I’m not really that mad. To each their own, but you’ll forgive me for getting in my feelings. After all, this past weekend, I watched arguably the greatest monster movie released this century.

Is ‘Conclave’ Streaming Anywhere? Where to Watch Ralph Fiennes’ Masterpiece That Might Determine the Next Pope
Image
Conclave has become one of the most important movies post the Oscars race, after the subject matter of the film is currently happening in real life. Pope Francis, the former sovereign of the Vatican City, passed away on April 21, 2025. A papal conclave has gathered at the Sistine Chapel to choose the next pope, and believers across the world await to see the white smoke from the chapel.

The Ralph Fiennes-led film was already a popular watch after the Pope’s death. However, the latest reports coming from the Vatican are too bizarre to be true. The reports suggest that the cardinals gathered to choose the new Pope are watching Edward Berger’s film to get a better idea of the proceedings.

Conclave streaming details: Cardinals are reportedly watching it to elect the next Pope Ralph Fiennes in a still from Edward Berger’s Conclave | Credits: Focus Features

New York Catholic Bishops Denounce Trump’s AI Image As Pope: “Do Not Mock Us”
Image
New York’s Catholic leaders have denounced President Donald Trump for his artificial intelligence-generated image of himself as the pope, reflecting public outcry about the insensitivity of sharing such a photo in the wake of Pope Francis’ death.

“There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President,” the official Nys Catholic Conference, which represents the public policy voice of the state’s bishops, wrote on X. “We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us.”

The image depicts Trump — who is not Catholic — seated on an gilded chair, dressed in white papal vestments and headdress, with one finger raised, in a gesture that evokes Christ and other religious figures’ hand symbols in Christian iconography. Saturday Night Live‘s Colin Jost addressed the image’s gesture, joking that it...

Russell Crowe's Spooky Pope Movie Is A Must-Watch For Hulu Users
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Julius Avery's goofy-ass demonic thriller "The Pope's Exorcist" was released in April of 2023, but I think it knows in its heart that it's a January movie. "The Pope's Exorcist" is about Father Gabriele Amorth, a real-life priest who worked as a specialized exorcist for the Diocese of Rome, the district that the Pope himself oversees. Amorth was one of the founding members of the International Association of Exorcists, a very real enclave of some 900 priests who specialize in demonic possession. Amorth wrote two memoirs based on his experiences as an exorcist ("An Exorcist Tells His Story" and "An Exorcist: More Stories"), and the writers of "The Pope's Exorcist" extrapolated them into a very, very loose film adaptation.

Russell Crowe, trying on a very thick Italian accent, plays Amorth, and the film details a specific demonic possession he encountered in...

‘The Two Popes’ Pops on Netflix Following Francis’ Death
Image
Pope Francis died on April 21, one day before Conclave came to Amazon Prime Video (and a few weeks after it left Peacock). But there was another pope-themed film available for streaming subscribers — and it took off on Netflix.

The Two Popes, a 2019 Oscar-winning film about the relationship between Francis (Jonathan Pryce) and his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins), returned to Netflix’s top 10. Its viewership increased by more than 30x the prior week, Netflix said, when Pope Francis was ailing but still alive.

From April 21-27, The Two Popes reached the Netflix top 10 in 27 countries, racking up 3.2 million global views.

That view tally was good enough for eighth place last week among all English-language movies on Netflix. Tom Hardy’s Havoc topped the list with 29.8 million views in just its first three days of availability, nearly tripling TV’s top performer, the premiere of You season five (10.1 million views...

Tom Hanks' Forgotten Papal Conclave Blockbuster Becomes a Streaming Hit
Image
Even as Edward Berger's Oscar-winning hit Conclave continues to rule streaming charts, albeit under unfortunate circumstances, another movie set against the backdrop of the ancient Catholic ritual is climbing up the rankings. The movie in question made nearly five times as much at the box office than Conclave back in 2009, but was hardly as acclaimed. It featured a genuine A-lister in the lead role, but remains largely forgotten. At best, it can claim to have cultivated a cult following. The movie is Angels & Demons, the sequel to 2006's blockbuster The Da Vinci Code.

Both films were headlined by Tom Hanks, directed by Ron Howard, and based on best-selling thrillers written by Dan Brown. Angels & Demons saw Hanks' Professor Robert Langdon being summoned to the Vatican in the immediate aftermath of the Pope's death. He is told that four Cardinals have been kidnapped by a man claiming to...

“There have undoubtedly been gay men elected pope”: ‘Conclave’ May Have Gone Too Far Electing an Intersex Pope, but an Expert Believes It’s Possible
Image
The religious conclave of Cardinals to elect the new pope shown in last year’s Conclave, is one of the best speculative historical fictions. Though the steps for the election have been common knowledge, it is still one of the most secretive processes in the world. What happens inside those doors has been everyone’s curiosity, as the Cardinals are sworn to secrecy.

However, a religious scholar believes that the Ralph Fiennes movie is more accurate than one would imagine. The film shows a lot of drama between Cardinals, who campaign for different candidates, only for a completely new candidate, Cardinal Benitez, to be appointed Pope. It is also revealed that Benitez is intersex, which he only got to know much later in life.

Conclave’s final twist is entirely possible, though not probable, according to a religious scholar Ralph Fiennes in Conclave | Credits: Focus Features

Mel Gibson's Controversial Jesus Movie Unsurprisingly Finds New Success 21 Years Later on Streaming
Image
Mel Gibson's Jesus movie, The Passion of the Christ, has been drowning in controversy since the project was announced. Aside from a stunning box office run and multiple award nods, the movie has just become a hit on Netflix 21 years later.

With a sequel on the way over two decades later, The Passion of the Christ's success on streaming was not coincidental. Movies following the life of Jesus Christ were a big hit over the Easter weekend, as expected. Per Tudum, The Passion of the Christ was one of the big hits of the week.

The Mel Gibson-directed film just debuted on Netflix and, for the week between Apr. 16 and 22, it reached the second place spot in the global non-English charts. The movie received 8.5 million views and 17.1 million hours viewed. Although it didn't manage to top the charts, its run 21 years later is still highly impressive.

The Two Popes Netflix: Cast and Plot of the Pope Francis Movie
Image
Behind the walls of the Vatican, one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the history of the Roman Catholic Church unfolds. From Academy Award–nominated director Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener) and screenwriter Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything), the biographical drama The Two Popes explores the role of the Church in the modern world through the relationship of two pontiffs: traditionalist Pope Benedict XVI and his liberal successor, Pope Francis.

Pope Benedict, played by Anthony Hopkins, resigned from the papacy in 2013. Pope Francis, played by Jonathan Pryce, served in the role for 12 years until his death in April 2025. Both Hopkins and Price earned Oscar nominations for their portrayals.

You can watch The Two Popes on Netflix now.

Frustrated by the direction the Church is taking, Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio has sent multiple letters of resignation to the Vatican, all of which have gone unanswered. After...

3 movies to stream on Netflix this Easter
Image
Easter might be the holiest of days in Christianity, but it certainly does not have the depth of quality films that Christmas brings. Perhaps because Christmas is much more commercialized than Easter, receiving gifts makes the anticipation even better. But the films? There are some great ones.

With Easter, people get a lot of bunnies and crucifixion-related films. Both can be worthy, but they have to be done just right. Things can, unfortunately, go wrong easily.

Thankfully, with the three movies that follow, a lot goes right. Once you're done with Easter egg hunting, you can turn on one of these films that are currently streaming on Netflix. Two are not made for children, though.

Three films to stream on Netflix this EasterPeter Rabbit (2018)

The cast list here is incredible, but none of it works without James Cordon voicing the iconic rabbit spectacularly well. The animation is excellent, too. Not...

Al Pacino and Dan Stevens Dance With the Devil In ‘The Ritual’ Teaser Trailer
Image
He may have once played the devil himself in the 1997 film The Devil’s Advocate, but today, Al Pacino is attempting to banish the powers of evil with Dan Stevens by his side. XYZ Films has dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming horror film The Ritual, which drops its two leading men into an exorcism flick based on a true story. Although it was initially set to go toe-to-toe with the Easter crowd, the power of Christ compelled the folks behind the David Midell-helmed production to move the feature’s release to the summer on June 6.

Fully embracing all the terror that comes with a movie about an exorcism, the teaser trailer for The Ritual introduces audiences to Pacino’s Theophilus Riesinger and Stevens’ Joseph Steiger. Both men are priests who have been summoned to help Emma Schmidt (Abigail Cowen) — a young woman who is suspected to be suffering from demonic possession.

Liam Neeson and Russell Crowe Teamed Up for This Underseen, Free-to-Stream Action Thriller Directed by an Oscar Winner
Image
Russell Crowehas had one of the most interesting careers of any actor working in Hollywood today. While there was an era where his performances in modern classics such as Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, and Cinderella Man suggested that he could become one of the greatest actors of all-time, Crowe has spent the last few years making poorly-received genre films; while there may be fans of The Pope’s Exorcist and Unhinged that claim that they are “guilty pleasures,” they certainly don’t compare to the brilliance that Crowe displayed in The Insider and American Gangster. However, there was a brief period in which Crowe would take on these seemingly straightforward genre projects and elevate them into truly thought-provoking pieces of drama. The Next Three Daysis an inventive thriller about the origin of criminality, and gave Crowe the rare opportunity to team up with Liam Neeson.

All of Netflix's nominations ever in big six categories of the Academy Awards
Image
Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.

Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.

In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

The 2025 Oscars will be held on Sunday,...

Paul Giamatti and Radio Silence Team for Biopic on Paranormal Radio Host Art Bell
Paul Giamatti
Paul Giamatti, who co-hosts his own podcast about all things high strange, is set to play paranormal broadcaster and author Art Bell in an upcoming biopic, Deadline reports.

The site notes that the package comes courtesy of the Radio Silence team, with Amazon and Warner Bros. among those currently interested.

Deadline details, “The pitch is a biopic about the late paranormal DJ Art Bell, who would broadcast his radio show from his home studio 65 miles west of Las Vegas, fielding unscreened telephone calls in a five-hour show on Knye-FM called Coast to Coast.”

“Guests would offer up eyewitness stories on Bell’s show about alien encounters, past lives, time travel and more X-Files-like situations,” Deadline’s article this week continues.

The aforementioned podcast Chinwag similarly features Paul Giamatti and co-host Stephen Asma covering the very same topics, so this project is very much in the actor’s wheelhouse.

The Pope's Exorcist vs. The Exorcism: Which 2020s Russell Crowe Horror Movie Is Better
Image
Russell Crowe is one of the most distinguished actors of his generation. Recently, Crowe's career has deviated towards the horror genre — with two similar roles in The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism. Crowe was nominated for Best Actor three years running during the 2000s for his lead role in Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and The Insider. While Crowe has experienced notable highs in his career, he has encountered significant setbacks, too. Poker Face sits at Crowe's lowest critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with a meager 9%, and his most recent slate of films has not performed well.

In 2023, Crowe portrayed the real-life Vatican exorcist in The Pope's Exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth. Months later, Crowe featured in The Exorcism, where he depicts a single father and recovering addict, starring on a cursed film set. The comparisons between The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism were addressed by the writer, who believes "it's sort of a happy accident.
