Should you use these extra hours to reconnect with family, go to museums or explore the natural world in all its holy wonders? No! You should be watching movies, and lots of ’em! Luckily, June is a rock-solid month with plenty of great Don’t-Miss Indies titles to enjoy.

No stranger to playing not-so-upstanding knights in shining armor, Jaime Lannister himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, has boarded "Virtue," a medieval gothic horror movie that HanWay Films is taking to the European Film Market. Founded in 1999, HanWay is a British sales, distribution, and marketing company that's managed to get a pretty eclectic batch of films made over the years. Their output ranges from celebrated documentaries to Oscar-nominated period dramas to a bevy of auteur projects from the likes of David Cronenberg ("A Dangerous Method"), Takashi Miike ("13 Assassins"), Jim Jarmusch ("Only Lovers Left Alive"), and many more.
If that's not enough to get you sitting up and taking notice, know that "Virtue" further pairs Coster-Waldau with Romola Garai, the star of "Atonement," "Suffragette," and one of the best BBC series you've never seen, Abi Morgan's 1950s-set TV journalism drama "The Hour." In a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter), HanWay Films CEO Gabrielle Stewart notes that,...

“Children of the Lowest Heaven”
From Denmark, internationally acclaimed writer-director Birgitte Stærmose Mortensen, who has been working on mini-series for HBO, Starz and Netflix for the past five years, presented “Children of the Lowest Heaven” (“Ønskeliv”), a hybrid doc set in Kosovo.
Inspired by her short “Out of Love” (2009), about a group of children living in poverty in post-war Pristina, it picks up where she left off with the characters, who are now young adults, still fighting to survive in one of Europe’s poorest nations.
It’s about the long-term effects of war, and what it means to live a life in poverty. Poverty is not a moment but a lifelong state of being:...

Exclusive: Lionsgate is finalizing a deal to acquire a minority stake in London- and Los Angeles-based management and production company 42, we can reveal.
Management-production powerhouse 3 Arts Entertainment, of which Lionsgate is a majority owner, has been a key driver in concocting the deal and will look to collaborate on TV and film projects with the fast-growing 42 and Lionsgate in a three-way venture. We understand the pact will also include a first-look deal between Lionsgate Television and 42 for the U.S.
Lionsgate and 42 were unavailable for comment but we know the pact is almost done. We hear it is lucrative and well into eight figures. In 2018, Lionsgate bought a majority stake in 3 Arts which valued it at $300 million-plus, so given the sky-high valuations of media companies right now in Hollywood, it’s likely to be a fair chunk of change.

The BBC has unveiled a six-year plan that will see the corporation expand key services outside of London and further afield in the U.K. with a pot of $978 million set aside for the undertaking.
Going forward, a majority of the Beeb’s TV programs will be made across the country rather than primarily from London, which is a major production hub. These programs will receive at least 60% of network TV commission spend of £1.6 billion ($2.2 billion) — up from the existing 50%.
One recent success story of a program from the Nations hitting the mainstream was BBC-backed Welsh broadcaster S4C’s “Keeping Faith” (pictured), which became a huge hit for the BBC and also sold well globally. The move means more distinctive programs like this from outside London will form part of the BBC’s content pipeline.

U.K. regional funder Liverpool Film Office has launched a £250,000 single project development pot to support local talent during the coronavirus crisis using funds repurposed from its existing production fund.
The new Liverpool City Region Film & TV Development Fund will support feature film and TV content, including both scripted and factual programs, with development awards of between £2,500 and £25,000.
The development fund is open to established and start-up production companies based in and around Liverpool as well as to out-of-region producers looking to co-produce or collaborate with Liverpool-based talent.
The Film Office says it promises a responsive service via an online application portal that will indicate funding decisions within 10 working days.
It says it is giving priority to diverse, high-quality projects that commit to spending a significant proportion of their development budget within the local creative sector, and that have the greatest potential to move quickly into production in the city region once the market returns.

Even if you're not a Downton Abbey fan, it's hard not to enjoy Netflix's new historical sports drama, The English Game. Penned by Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes, this six-part miniseries tells the story of how football came to be the most-played sport across the world, focusing on the real-life Fa Cup Final in 1883. The final was between the Eton public schoolboys and the mill workers of Blackburn, with Blackburn winning 2-1; it marked the first time a working-class factory team had bested an upper-class football team. Before you watch, here's everything you should know about the true story that inspired the series.

Netflix could almost fill the Best Limited Series category at the Emmys this year — with shows that they have not even released yet: Damien Chazelle‘s “The Eddy,” Julian Fellowes‘ “The English Game,” Ryan Murphy‘s “Hollywood” and Octavia Spencer‘s “Self Made” are major contenders. HBO also has four miniseries that are unseen, nine months into the 12-month eligibility period: Derek Cianfrance‘s “I Know This Much is True,” David Simon‘s “The Plot Against America,” Dennis Kelly‘s “The Third Day” and David E. Kelley‘s “The Undoing.” And that’s not even mentioning forthcoming offerings from Amazon, Apple, Epix, FX, Hulu, National Geographic and Showtime.
See the case for “Homeland” making an Emmy comeback.

Exclusive: Netflix has pacted to make Night Teeth, setting Adam Randall to direct a thriller that is a co-production between Unique Features and 42. Randall recently directed I See You, which debuted at SXSW and will be released theatrically in December by Saban Films.
Scripted by Brent Dillon (Black Tide Beach), the pic is described as an electric, youth-driven thriller with a genre twist that takes place over the course of a night in Los Angeles. A young chauffeur drives two beautiful young women to different parties. They’re not who they claim to be, and he ends up in a fight for his life.
The pic is produced by Unique Features’ Vincent Gatewood and 42’s Ben Pugh & Charlie Morrison. Unique Features’ Bob Shaye, the founder of New Line who launched the production company with his late partner Michael Lynne, will be executive producer along with 42’s Erica Steinberg.

It’s been a busy ten days for the global SVODs in London as top execs from Netflix, Amazon and Apple all outlined their multi-million-dollar ambitions in the UK. Grilled by members of the House of Lords, all three streamers opened up about their strategies to produce significant numbers of hours of programming out of Britain.
Apple revealed that it has already spent millions of dollars with UK producers including BBC Studios, ahead of the launch of its digital platform later this year, Amazon lifted the lid about working with British broadcasters on projects such as Steve McQueen’s Small Axe, and Netflix called co-productions the “lifeblood” of its business across the pond, hours before unveiling plans to create a major production hub at Shepperton Studios.

Netflix is going across the pond to create a production hub at Pinewood Group’s Shepperton Studios in England, the company said Wednesday.
The streaming service’s new U.K. base will feature 14 sound stages, workshops and office space. The first Netflix project to use the rented facility will be the action drama “The Old Guard,” starring Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne, and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
The film — produced by Skydance Media, Denver and Delilah, and Marc Evans — is based on the comic book series created by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández.

As has been rumoured for a while now, Netflix is setting up a production hub in the UK at Pinewood’s Shepperton Studios, which has been home to a string of Marvel and Disney tentpoles in recent years.
The first production to film at the 14-stage studio space is the streamer’s now-shooting fantasy pic The Old Guard with Charlize Theron and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The hub also includes workshops and office spaces.
We understand this is a 10-year lease, a significant statement of intent from the streamer.
“Shepperton has been synonymous with world class film for nearly a century and it’s an important production hub for the U.K. creative community today,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We’re incredibly proud to be part of that heritage. This investment will ensure that British creators and producers have first rate production facilities and a world stage for their work.

Netflix has asserted that it has a “long-term commitment” to producing shows out of the UK and is growing “deep roots” with the British creative community.
Anne Mensah, Vice President of Original Series, Netflix told the House of Lords’ Communications Committee, “I was brought in to essentially work with British talent and to help and support that talent to reach a global stage. I believe my appointment and the appointment of my team in London is an indication of Netflix’s commitment and its long-term commitment to production in the UK.”
The former Sky drama chief said that Netflix wanted to have a mixed model in the UK with original commissions, co-productions with linear broadcasters including the BBC and Channel 4 and co-licensing deals. “It’s about collaboration, not competition,” she said.
She also revealed that Netflix, which now has around 130 employees in the UK, a marked increase over the last twelve months,...

The Crown producer Andy Harries has claimed that the “power of British television has essentially moved to L.A.” with the growth of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon.
But the founder of Sony-owned Left Bank Pictures said he was still “optimistic” about public service broadcasting in the UK from the likes of BBC, ITV and Channel 4.
Harries was speaking in the House of Lords Select Committee on Communications as part of their inquiry on public service broadcasting in the age of video-on-demand. He was speaking alongside Dan Cheesbrough, commercial director at Sherlock and Dracula producer Hartswood Films.
The pair were asked about the possibility of imposing trading requirements on the SVODs, the importance of owning IP and why younger audiences were eschewing traditional linear broadcasters.
