Call of Duty and Fortnite are perhaps two of the most popular names you’ll hear in the video game industry. Both of these universes bring players in with the hope of action-packed gameplay, along with the freedom to personalize their playstyles based on each season and setting they’re diving into.
However, no matter how great a game, sometimes it can feel a bit much like playing the same thing over and over again. That’s where other games come in, and here are five of the most unique games you should try out if you haven’t already.

X-Men ’97: Captain America Returns ( Photo Credit – Disney+ Hotstar )
Every Marvel fan is currently busy binging on the X-Men ’97 series. The premise of the animated series picks up where the 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series ends. The MCU series is created by Beau DeMayo. So far, seven episodes have dropped on Disney+ Hotstar. In the latest episode, ‘Bright Eyes’, the team has brought back Steve Rogers, aka Captain America.
In MCU movies, Chris Evans, who played Steve Rogers, is probably dead after Avengers: Endgame. But seeing the Cap return in X-Men ’97 made the Marvel fans happy. However, not everyone is pleased with the way they treated him in the animated series. Fans are unhappy with how the makers showed Steve’s alignment towards the government when he stood against their wrongdoings in movies. It’s a scene between Rogue (voiced by Lenore Zann) and Cap (Josh Keaton) that has got the reactions.

There have been many worries that Xbox could be leaving the console game after its recent announcements in terms of bringing its exclusives onto PlayStation, but luckily, due to a recent tease from Jez Corden of the Xbox Two Podcast, this could all be nothing to worry about.
According to Jez Corden, there is an Xbox handheld device that is currently designated as a prototype and could become one of the next console releases for Xbox. So far, there isn’t a lot of information teased about this handheld prototype, but it does seem to have one feature that the PlayStation Portal doesn’t.
An Xbox Handheld Could Be on the Way, and It Seems to Be an Upgrade to the Playstation Portal A new Xbox handheld device could be in the works.
When it comes to handheld devices, many developers have struggled to create a device that meets the demands of the public.

TikTok just held its biggest creator summit yet, and used the event to announce it’s making two big changes in monetization: first, it’s bringing the Creativity Program out of beta, and second, it’s expanding Live Subscriptions beyond live content.
The Creativity Program, as you probably know, is TikTok’s replacement for the $1 billion let’s-get-creators-paid fund it established in 2020. It first introduced the Creativity Program around this time last year, paying out only on videos longer than 60 seconds.
As TikTok revealed at its For Creators: Future Formats Summit today in Los Angeles, that stipulation is remaining as the program comes out of beta, but one thing that isn’t staying is the name. TikTok has gone from Creator Fund to Creativity Program and now to the (possibly permanent?) moniker Creator Rewards Program.
The Rewards Program will release in the coming weeks “with some improvements,” TikTok says, without...

The PlayStation portal has been around for just over two months now, the remote play device has been one of their most successful launches in recent memory becoming the fourth best-selling system in the United States for gaming, the system itself only allows players to connect to an already powered on PlayStation 5 that has a stable network connection.
However, this could all be about to change with a new hack released for the device this week that will elevate the portal to a whole new level. This hack may just make the device very much worth the money for those who love more than just their current PlayStation library
So what is this new hack for the Playstation portal? An X user confirmed in a post that Ppsspp is now native on the portal

Mac Sabbath — everyone’s favorite McDonald’s-themed Black Sabbath tribute band — have announced an early 2024 tour of the West Coast, featuring support by the garage-punk act The Darts.
Having recently completed an extensive fall US tour, Mac Sabbath had a little more room in their appetite for a few more shows, hence the name “Save Room for Desert” for the 2024 jaunt. The spelling of “desert” is intentional, as the band will be playing shows in Pioneertown, California, on January 17th; Flagstaff, Arizona, on January 19th; Tucson, Arizona, on January 20th, and Las Vegas on January 21st.
Tickets can be found at venue links via Mac Sabbath’s website, or at StubHub, where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.

Waking Nightmare begins appropriately enough with Jordan waking up screaming from a nightmare. This has been a regular occurrence since her best friend Jamie killed herself. It’s gotten bad enough that she’s moved back home with her parents Danielle and Jeff.
A visit from her best friend Zoey seems to cheer her up, but that night her nightmares turn into sleepwalking, and while doing that she pulls a knife on her mother. This gets her an appointment with Dr. Doolin who gives her a prescription for Ambien.
The Ambien doesn’t make her start posting racist comments on Twitter, but it doesn’t stop her sleepwalking either. In fact, she ends up walking out of the house...

Valve is behind some of the most beloved video games of all time, but the Portal series is arguably the company’s magnum opus. The Portal games have it all: clever puzzles, witty writing, and enough depressing lore to fill a Dark Souls world bible. However, despite the Portal franchise’s popularity, we’ve only received two Portal games (and a spin-off meant to advertise the Steam Deck). This unfortunate reality disappointed many gamers and helped spawn the joke that Valve is allergic to the number 3. However, we now seem to know some of the more practical reasons why Valve never worked on Portal 3.
Not too long ago, Simon Parkin, host of the My Perfect Console podcast, interviewed the writer of Portal 1 and 2, Erik Wolpaw. Parkin began the interview with the question on everyone’s mind: Where is Portal 3? Many outlets, including PCGamer, have noted that Wolpaw has tried to...

A month mostly filled with successful sequels and franchise installments comes to an end with an unexpectedly promising original. Not wholly original, as “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is based on the 1974 table-top role-playing game which counts as its own genre. However, the picture is closest in spirit to “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”
It is an IP sell with plenty of Easter Eggs and in-jokes for fans of the brand. However, it’s first and foremost a rousing, crowd-pleasing action comedy filled with a game cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant that plays for those who play the game or those who have merely heard of it via pop culture osmosis.
The $150 million Paramount/EOne production comes courtesy of writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who last helmed the winning ensemble comedy “Game Night.” The Jason Bateman...

In the first episode of the new season of "Star Trek: Picard," Raffi (Michelle Hurd), while working for a mysterious, faceless contact within Starfleet, is attempting to locate dangerous stolen technology that can be used as a massively destructive weapon. Raffi catches wind of where the weapon will be used but arrives moments too late to stop it. She watches in horror as the Starfleet recruitment building -- the entire massive structure -- is sucked into a mysterious portal that is instantaneously formed below it. An exit portal then appears about a mile up and a few miles over, and the building crashes to the ground, crushing its own next-door neighbors.
The practical implications for portal technology will, of course, be immediately evident to anyone who has ever played the 2007 video game "Portal." That game was predicated on making magical doorways through which the player would pass in order to...

Much like the Super-Collider at the center of its multiverse plot, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” opened a rift that continues to impact the world around it. Its influence can still be felt across the film industry, from “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” and “The Bad Guys” to the new “Puss in Boots” blending CG animation with illustrated looks — showing not only what superhero movies could do better, but how Hollywood animation as a whole could improve.
For the sequel to the Oscar winner, the filmmakers are not just resting on their laurels, but doubling down on the innovation of “Into the Spider-Verse.” This means inventing new tools for animation and challenging the characters with emotional stories. But arguably the biggest innovation is the way “Across the Spider-Verse” challenges the superhero film industrial complex and its treatment of comic book artists, by making them a part of the film’s development.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a buggy nightmare that shouldn’t have been released in its current state, and Xbox One and PS4 gamers were sold an objectively broken product. There’s a lot of blame to go around, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that the actual title itself is pretty damn good. Sure, you’ll have to deal with cars randomly exploding, your character falling through the floor and endless crashes to get there, but if you’re playing on Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 or a beefy PC, Cyberpunk 2077 is actually very fun.
As you’d expect from the makers of The Witcher games, Night City is crammed full of cool little touches and cultural references. I’ve seen nods to Portal, Johnny Mnemonic, Demolition Man, Joker, Ghost in the Shell and The Office – and I’m sure there are many more I’ve missed. But one of the coolest is related to Batman,...

Insomniac Games released a new gameplay demo for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart during Gamescom’s opening night ceremony, and it featured possibly our best look yet at the potential of PS5’s power potential.
While the demo was described as seamless gameplay footage captured from a PS5, it should be noted that the sequence it showcased looked fairly scripted. Our best guess is that it’s taken from a segment early in the game that is meant to serve as a kind of preview for what’s to come. As such, it’s still a little hard to tell whether or not the game will live up to some of its larger technological promises based entirely on this sequence.
Even still, what we see of the game during this demo is very impressive. That’s especially true of the game’s rifts, which (at least at this early stage...

If you’re short on cash or simply fancy saving a few bob, both Sony and Microsoft have some great gaming sales currently underway. That being said, if you’re on the market for some freebies to tide you over this weekend, then you’re in the right place! As the the ol’ saying goes: The best things in life are free, right?
Both Sony and Microsoft are currently offering free weekends for certain games. In other words, a couple of titles won’t require you to pay anything to play them for a limited time, so you can check them out for free right now. Indeed, this weekend, there are a staggering 14 games that you can play for free across both the Xbox One and PS4. Admittedly, Microsoft’s free-to-play offerings far outweigh Sony’s, but there’s still a lot to choose from regardless of which console you’ll be gaming on.

Apex Legends is coming to Steam. Thanks to various leaks over the last few months, you probably already knew that.
What you couldn’t have known until recently, however, is that fans who download the battle royale on Valve’s platform will be able to get their mitts on a handful of exclusive cosmetic items. As revealed during a special stream yesterday, Respawn confirmed that, starting this fall, its popular multiplayer title will no longer be exclusive to EA’s Origin service on PC. This isn’t the news of a standalone client that many had perhaps hoped, but expanded accessibility options are always welcome to see, especially when there’s free stuff included to sweeten the deal.

Death Stranding is one of the most bizarre and unique games ever made, which isn’t so surprising when you consider it’s the first project from an independent Kojima Productions, where the legendary video game auteur Hideo Kojima is finally completely free to let his imagination run wild. Setting players on a grueling trek across a post-apocalyptic United States while delivering valuable cargo along the way, Death Stranding may be Kojima’s most divisive game (although I love it). Some have labeled it a “walking simulator” while others hail it as a prescient work of art that may even have predicted the state of the world during the Covid-19 pandemic.
However you ultimately feel about the game, it was difficult to ignore Death Stranding‘s weirdness when it first released on the PlayStation 4 last year. Now the title has hit PC, giving a new group of gamers the chance...

Developer Red Barrels is working on a new Outlast game called The Outlast Trials. It’s not quite what you’re expecting, either.
“Whilst not a direct sequel to the other critically acclaimed Outlast titles in the series, The Outlast Trials will be set in the same thrilling universe: more precisely, right in the middle of the Cold War era,” Red Barrels said of the new sequel in a press release. “The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors of the trials by themselves or cooperate with up to 3 other test subjects. After all, it’s always better to shit your pants with some friends!”
If we had to guess, though, we’d say that this will likely be a more intimate horror experience that is similar in scope to the original Outlast title in the sense that it will see you try to survive the horror of a particular facility.

As the struggle over President Donald Trump’s use of social media continues, a half-dozen Facebook executives have taken the unusual step of publicly criticizing the company’s permissive stance on Trump’s messages.
Some employees, working from home, decided to stage a virtual walkout by not logging in to work Monday.
Twitter has flagged tweets by Trump in recent days. An infamous one warning that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” was appended with a note from Twitter saying it violated a company policy against glorifying violence. The White House responded to the moves by Twitter by issuing an executive order seeking to rein in tech companies, though most observers see it as unlikely to gain traction.
Facebook, meanwhile, has allowed the same message by Trump to remain on its platform, which has 2.6 billion monthly active users. That laissez-faire approach, which is consistent with founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg...

Facebook recently unveiled a new service called Facebook Messenger Rooms that allows large groups to host shared video and text conversations. Rooms arrives at a time when millions of people are looking for easier ways to communicate without having to meet in person.
It also aims to challenge Zoom, the nearly undisputed king of video conferencing services. It’s not a coincidence that Facebook has introduced Rooms right when Zoom is taking off, but there’s also no denying that Facebook Messenger users have been asking for more robust conferencing features for quite some time.
Now that Rooms is here, though, it’s time to start asking some real questions about what the service is, how to use it, and, most importantly, whether it’s worth using in the first place. To help you answer those questions, here are some of the most important things you need to know about...

Social distancing and lockdowns amid the coronavirus emergency have forced us all to stay indoors, which means that video conferencing has become a more valuable tool than ever before when it comes to staying in touch with co-workers, friends, and family. You’ve probably heard quite a bit about Zoom, the video conferencing app that lets you connect with up to 100 friends from the comfort of your home. The app is easy to use, lets you share your screen for business meetings, and even offers a way to make video conferences more fun through its virtual backgrounds. It’s also not a bad way to play party games online!
But Zoom also comes with some restrictions. For example, the free tier of the service only lets you chat in 40-minute intervals, meaning that every time you reach your time limit, your call will end and you’ll need to start a new one.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is by turns graceful and frustrating. Mostly similar to the first entry in the series, landscapes are now even more vibrant and colorful. Elements that make the game bigger than its predecessor, like a charming town-building subplot, are unobtrusive and welcome. With that expanded scope come debilitating bugs, though, which made speeding through the game for review more difficult. Frame rate stutter, animation glitches, and crashes plagued my experience with Ori and the Will of the Wisps. A day-one patch released to address these issues fixed the stutter but not all of the crashes on my Xbox One.
That said, the story is charming enough. After Ori’s owl friend Ku gets lost in a storm, you search for him through the tangles and dungeons of a new forest. The first area brings the same delights as the first game in the series: strange creatures,...

In Digital Shorts we review some of the latest video games that are only available digitally (at least in the UK), in a short-form review format. In this edition we take a look at Soul Axiom Rebooted, a Wii U port available now on the Nintendo Switch.
Soul Axiom Rebooted comes to the Nintendo Switch, after initially appearing (without the rebooting) on the Nintendo Wii U. A first-person cyber-puzzler, Soul Axiom Rebooted offers a few changes to the original game which offer some little improvements to a game that was already greeted fondly.
I was very intrigued by this title, a sci-fi puzzle adventure game with a bizarre and mind-bending narrative that follows you, the player, as you wander the digital afterlife, entangled in a blur of realities in the cyber-world of Elysia. It’s trippy, weird and bloody cool. Visually it’s a real treat on the Switch, both...

Valve has finally confirmed that they are not working on any new Left 4 Dead games.
In a statement to IGN, Valve officially put those Left 4 Dead 3 rumors to bed.
“We did briefly explore some Left 4 Dead next-gen opportunities a few years ago. But we are absolutely not working on anything L4D related now, and haven’t for years," says Valve regarding recent reports which suggest that Left 4 Dead 3 is in active development. "It’s clear some people are having fun creating misinformation to spin up the community and other outlets. Unfortunately, for now, a new L4D game is not something we’re working on.”
The recent rumors Valve refers to come from sources that are now clearly not worth naming. Basically, though, they suggested that Valve was working on a new Left 4 Dead game that was likely going to be a Vr title. That now...

After the official unveiling and debut trailer for Half-Life: Alyx made the rounds, gamers from all over began wondering if famed developer Valve was working on any other passion projects. After the release of The Orange Box back in 2007, the Seattle-based studio was propelled into the spotlight as fans anxiously awaited followups to Half-Life 2: Episode Two and Portal. The latter eventually got a critically acclaimed sequel in 2011, and while we might never see a proper conclusion to Gordon Freeman’s fight against the Combine, Half-Life Alyx is poised to set a new standard for Aaa virtual reality games.
Unfortunately, fans of Left 4 Dead have been, well, left for dead. Aside from a Japanese-exclusive arcade game, there’s been no proper entry in the series for over a decade. However, rumors surrounding Left 4 Dead 3 began to surface in 2019, and the last few days have seen a handful of new reports...

Aperture Camera, a planned Portal prequel from Valve, looks like it would've been interesting.
Today we've had our best look yet at Aperture Camera, a canceled game that Valve was developing at one point to be a prequel to its excellent Portal experiences. Portal and its sequel remain two of the best-loved puzzle games ever produced, of course, and this prequel looks like it could've been excellent as well.
It's thanks to an indie developer called LunchHouse Software that footage from Valve's Aperture Camera is now coming to light. For reasons unknown, Valve has given LunchHouse permission to work with the source code for its Portal prequel and create a video series about it. LunchHouse is also using the code to create its own puzzle game, which is called Punt and will apparently launch this year.
Ours is not to question why, though. Rather than wondering why...

Facebook has enlisted Hollywood stars Chris Rock and Sylvester Stallone for its first-ever Super Bowl ad, set to air during Fox’s Feb. 2, 2020 telecast.
The 60-second spot will highlight Facebook Groups, which lets users create specific communities for people to interact directly with each other, showing “how people from different backgrounds come together over shared interests and experiences,” per a company rep.
Variety reported last month that Fox sold out its ad inventory for Super Bowl Liv, unusually early for broadcasters in recent years to be fully booked for the NFL championship matchup, garnering over $5 million and up to $5.6 million for 30-second ad slots.
Stallone shot part of Facebook’s Super Bowl Liv ad this week in Philly in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the setting for the famous scene in his original “Rocky” movie. Stallone tweeted Tuesday, “It was fantastic working with @chrisrock. We got along great.

The Outlast Trials will take the Outlast series in an interesting new gameplay direction.
Developer Red Barrels is working on a new Outlast game called The Outlast Trials.
"Whilst not a direct sequel to the other critically acclaimed Outlast titles in the series, The Outlast Trials will be set in the same thrilling universe: more precisely, right in the middle of the Cold War era," Red Barrels says of the title via a recent press release. "The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors of the trials by themselves or cooperate with up to 3 other test subjects. After all, it’s always better to shit your pants with some friends!"
Sadly, that description and a single photo that looks more like a piece of concept art are really all we have to go on at the moment in regards to the finer points of the game.

It sounds like Half-Life: Alyx Will be slightly longer than your average Vr game.
If you're worried that Half-Life: Alyx is going to be more of a Vr tech demo than a full game, we've got some good news for you.
“This isn’t a spinoff or a side story, or anything of the sort,” says Half-Life: Alyx programmer Robin Walker in an interview with IGN. "It’s a full-scale campaign - repeated playtest results indicate it’s about the same length as Half-Life 2.”
While Walker says that this is more than a spinoff, it's worth noting that it sounds like the Half-Life team did not initially intend for Alyx to be a proper Half-Life game.
"We didn’t set out to make a Half-Life game,” says Walker. "Like many game developers, we often use our previous games to experiment with new design ideas. So in this case,...

Half-Life is finally back, but not the way you expected. Here's everything you need to know about the Valve Vr game, Half-Life: Alyx!
It's been 12 years since the last Half-Life game was released in 2007, and just when fans of the iconic franchise seemed to have lost all hope that Valve would ever continue the series, the company took to Twitter to announce a new installment. Half-Life: Alyx has been revealed as the studio's "flagship" virtual reality game.
The title is a prequel set beween the events of the first Half-Life and Half-Life 2, following Alyx's life before Gordon Freeman arrived in City 17. Alyx is on a mission to save her father, the scientist Eli Vance, who's been kidnapped by the evil Combine.
The game will feature a new weapon inspired by the series' Gravity Gun called "Grabbity Gloves" which allow you to pull items in the environment towards you.

Half-Life developer Valve could be on course to revive its iconic creation in the near future, it seems.
The series, which casts players as silent protagonist Gordon Freeman, has long been championed by fans and critics alike for being one of the most influential games of its generation. Released way back in 2004 to instant acclaim, Half-Life 2 has since been ported – most notably bundled with the original Portal in The Orange Box – to various platforms accompanied by Dlc expansions. The last of those, Episode Two, released in 2007 to a similar reception but since then…well, you undoubtedly know the story by now.
Half-Life 3, or lack thereof, has become a running joke in recent years, with fans of the Fps often chastising Valve for its seeming unwillingness to either confirm or deny the existence of a sequel. As for how the short history lesson above relates to today’s news – it’s...

In the ongoing standoff between the WGA and talent agencies, writers are being sourced for projects through other writers and online, according to producers speaking at the Produced By: New York conference Saturday in New York. They said it’s slower this way, but it’s going.

Facebook wants to get into your home.
In what smacks of slightly desperate "us-also-ism," Facebook this week launched its Portal and Portal Plus hardware devices. The big question for consumers, after years of Facebook missteps on privacy, is whether you should let the Portal inside your door. I'd suggest maybe not.
The devices come with 10- or 15-inch screens, and retail for $199 or $349. Expect a big ad blitz this holiday season. And given the devices' functions, form factor and price, you can be forgiven if the Portals seem a lot like Amazon's Echo Show.
With the Portal, Facebook is trying to stake out space, any space, in the Internet of Things, where Amazon has grabbed an early and significant lead. Every week, you can find announcements for new gadgets from many makers that are controlled by Amazon's voice-activated digital assistant Alexa. Not incidentally, that list includes Facebook's new Portals.

Universal Studios recently premiered Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again, a sequel to the Abba-inspired 2008 movie musical Mamma Mia!. The film is named after its titular track, and to promote it, Universal and Portal A decided to thrust the music video for that song back into the spotlight. Portal A enlisted four YouTube stars -- the two gents behind the musical duo Superfruit and the sisterly pair known as The Merrell Twins -- for a shot-for-shot remake of Abba's original "Mamma Mia!" video.
The remake features some vintage outfits and bouncy dance moves in order to invoke the look and feel of 1975, when the song first came out. While the new video is fun on its own, it gets even better when you pop it into the YouTube Doubler, where you can really see how exact of a remake it is.
