Charmless runaway
TheLittleSongbird1 June 2022
Am one of those people who really enjoyed the first 'Peter Rabbit'. A masterpiece it was not, but it was so much better than expected and was entertaining. While sequels don't always have a good reputation, there are some great ones out there and even masterpieces that are as good as their originals ('Godfather Part II', 'Aliens', 'Terminator 2', 'Empire Strikes Back'). Did though question the need for 'Peter Rabbit' getting a sequel when the first could easily have been a one off.

'Peter Rabbit 2' disappointed. It is not a terrible film and has its moments and good things, but its mixed critical reception is more than understandable, and agreed with sadly, and my feelings are pretty mixed. The first is definitely better, while this didn't feel needed and lacked what made the first so enjoyable (despite having the same cast back). As far as 2021 films go, 'Peter Rabbit 2' is not one of the worst, but among the best it is a long way from.

The good things are going to be listed first. It looks fine, with the photography and locations being lovely. Even better is the work on the animals, they look wonderful and gel seamlessly with the locations and what goes on around them. While the placement of the soundtrack was not great, the song selection was pretty good, characterful and diverse and the score fitted at least.

Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne do their best bringing charm into their underwritten roles. Most of the voice cast are very good, with the standout being Lennie James as one of the film's most interesting characters (being one of the few to get a backstory and clear motivations). There are some amusing lines, Peter's sisters have a lot of personality as do all the animal characters. One of the better moments was also the self-aware moment of Peter acknowledging that his voice is annoying.

On the other hand, the flaws are many. Peter himself is very difficult to root for, a big problem considering that in this story you are supposed to do so, due to the film going too far on showing his flaws and not enough of his good intentions. James Corden this time is irritating, he was fine before but comes over as cocky and obnoxious this time. The story this time felt messy and felt like two stories in one. The book deal subplot is very thin and over-stretched. Fine actor David Oyelowo deserved better than the stock obvious role he was given and he comes over as very one dimensional. Amazing how it took so long for the other characters to see through him.

Meanwhile, the main plot with Peter is very over-stuffed, too busy and too over-reliant on confused slapstick, the truth about one character's intentions being not a shock for a second and repetitive humour, especially with the rooster and petshop. Personally did find myself confused with what the film was trying to be and who it was being aimed at, so target audience was a big problem. With some of it being juvenile for adults and too complicated for younger audiences. For a family film there is not an awful lot to enjoy for younger viewers and older ones will only find it mildly amusing.

While finding the soundtrack choices nice, the placement was often questionable. With it not being harmonious with the action sometimes and being too loud. Charm is too little and the attempts at emotional drama come over as too sentimental. The ending is too rushed and convenient and the pacing is all over the shop, draggy in the subplot and too hectic in the main one.

Summing up, underwhelming but not bad despite how all that sounded. 5/10.

RATED 7/10 Language: English Source: Netflix

Watchable sequel with enough entertainment. They criticise the sequel by themself and write the story on the same way.... Its not up to the first part and also not bad. Dont go with the expectation of first part. Fun movie to watch with family and kids.

One time watchable.

Parent Info- Comfortable Taking my 4 yr old...
downthehobbitholeblog11 June 2021
Bea and Thomas are getting married and extending the business! But Peter is feeling left out and misunderstood. Is running away going to provide what he's looking for? Can Thomas and Peter learn to live harmoniously together? This movie is filled with mischievous laughter and marvelous family lessons- a great watch for family movie night. The director specifically wanted this to be a movie that adults and kids would enjoy and it does that well. In a very rare turn of events, I think I enjoyed Peter Rabbit 2 even more than the first movie. And I think it is more family friendly as well! For a full parent review with more information on how appropriate it is for younger children, check out our full review at the down the hobbit hole blog. There is a lot of slapstick comedy, but also a lot of heart in this sequel! The twist they put on the classic story is magnificently fun. And while there is a fair amount of bathroom humor and cartoonish violence- I absolutely feel comfortable taking my 4 year old to see this one. It's a really cute sequel!

Family entertainment

I didn't see the first one. Forgive me. But I did enjoy the sequel. The effects with the rabbits are spot on, and the voices bring them to life has characters, so with the other animals.

I was not quite has invested with the human characters, although Domhnall Gleason does have some funny moments, and Rose Byrne is alright in some scenes, but I became more interested in the scenes with the animals. But I believe this could be a film for kids and adults.

Whimsical Animated Comedy-Adventure Film With Loads Of Laughs
rannynm21 June 2021
Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is a family-friendly comedy-adventure film. I loved watching whimsical animated film. It had me laughing from beginning to end. The crazy adventures of Peter and the animals are highly entertaining.

In this film, the characters you loved from the first movie are back. A beautiful wedding, a new business, and a perfect life on the farm appeared to be all Peter Rabbit and his family need, but things change when a book Bea wrote about the rabbits gets an opportunity to be published.

Director Will Gluck and screenwriter Patrick Burleigh bring back Peter Rabbit with a new adventure while maintaining what we love about the characters from the first movie. The talented voice-overs of Peter Rabbit (James Corben), Mopsy (Elizabeth Debicki), Flopsy (Margot Robbie), Cottontail (Aimee Horne), and Barnabas (Lennie James) bring life to the characters and laughter. Of course, a comedy-adventure is nothing without a proper soundtrack. The music by Dominic Lewis keeps up with the high-energy animal mischief and helps build emotion. Art directors Nicholas Dare and Sophie Nash create realistic computer-generated animals that could easily play the lead actors in any movie, including humans. Their personalities will have movie viewers falling in love with them and cheering their victory.

Through Peter Rabbit's adventures on the farm and in the city, we learn that the importance of "family" is a continuous theme throughout the film. Unfortunately, Peter makes the mistake of letting the judgment of others question his character. However, the unconditional love from his siblings, cousin Bea, Thomas and the other animals helps him realize he doesn't have to be perfect to be loved. Bea and Thomas finally understand that "family" comes in all shapes and sizes.

I rate Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 3 to 18. Adults will also enjoy sharing laughs with their families. Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway premieres in theaters June 11, 2021 and on Amazon Prime.

A sequel that didn't disappoint!
devhammed3 July 2021
Starting with A Quiet Place sequel this week, it really ruined my mood and I wasn't up for another heart break but I just had to watch it and guess what, it lighten up my mood!

This is the sequel I want and I guess there is more from where this is coming from according to Peter's word in the mid-credits scene.

Improvement on the original
briancham199410 October 2021
This film takes the elements from the original film and improves on it in every way. It's incredibly self-aware about the reception and flaws of its predecessor, toning down the slapstick, exposing how irresponsible the mischief is, and focusing on the family dynamic. This is even lampshaded directly with the publishers of the book trying to make it more marketable, which ends up being a paradox. The characters realise that the changes are ruining the core heart of the story, yet the film itself actually incorporates the changes suggested by its villains. While clever and funny, this conflict would probably go over the heads of its child audience and it takes up too much screentime, as the other plot is very slow to start off. In a more compelling side story, Peter feels scrutinised and ostracised for his mayhem and ends up falling into even worse company. This has an emotional core that would appeal to more of the audience.

Cute and charming characters return for another adventure with less humor
cruise0124 September 2021
3 out of 5 stars.

Peter Rabbit 2 is a fair family film. Bringing back characters that we loved from the first film. Putting Peter in another adventure and theme about family. The sequel does lack humor compared to the first film. And less interesting human story than the first.

The sequel story follows the two main characters getting married. And Peter suspecting that once married and having kids of there own. Him and the rabbits are forgotten. McGregor and Peter still clash at times. Peter feeling like an outsider as he is always in trouble. Or caught in a bad moment. He runs away and falls into an old family friend rabbit who knew his father. And has a gang that robs food from peoples houses. And they plot a heist in a farmers market. While his human friends and rabbits make on a journey to rescue Peter.

Story was okay. A bit forgettable. The first focused on Peter and McGregor clashing for Rose Byrnes character and had a lot of entertaining moments. The sequel is missing a lot of the humor and memerable moments. It does have some sense of fun and cute characters that brings there fun energy on the screen that kids will enjoy. Adults may find this forgettable.

I Came Out of the Cinema with a Smile on my Face...
crystalrosexoxo3 May 2021
Don't listen to the negative reviews. This movie deserves a way better rating, I think everyone was waiting for it be released. I really enjoyed the first Peter Rabbit Movie, and the sequel followed up nicely. It focuses a lot on Peter Rabbit not so much on the others, but what do you expect, it's title is Peter Rabbit 2. I could watch this movie more than once and still find it interesting. It is a funny film, with a storyline that makes me happy... or sad some times. But altogether I loved this movie, and I think you would two. Thank you developers!!

Highly Recommend.

The Next Rabbit Lesson
OMTR18 February 2022
'Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway', or 'The Next Rabbit Lesson', is still so important when it comes to core values in life, but also sometimes shows that reaching the level of the original work is not always an easy thing.

Hopping into the theater and Having Fun Again
rgkarim12 June 2021
LIKES:

Cute Well Animated Expands on the First Heartfelt Friendly Humor Moves Well Decent Voice Acting Loved the Humor

DISLIKES:

Predictable A Bit Stupid/Kiddy At Times Some of the Jokes are annoying/ Rose Byrne's character underwhelming More Backstory on Some Characters/Character involvement

The VERDICT:

Overall, Peter Rabbit 2 is a very enjoyable addition to the series library, that maintains the cute, charm, and family friendly atmosphere most audience members are going for. It's expansion on the story and world keep in check with the rules of the universe and yet manage to expand the storyline a little further with new dynamics to stir things up. Characters are allowed to start breaking out of the group mentality, and helps develop Peter a little more in the grand scheme of his adventures. And the humor maintains the balance of kid and adult humor, with never slipping into inappropriate levels, that should be entertaining to all who go to view this film. Still, some of the humor is a little too much down the silly level, feeling out of place, and taking the time away from character development and building the relationships that I had hoped to see. Still, it's a fun family bout to the theater for this one, and should be quite safe for most to watch without fear of anyone being scarred for life.

My scores for the film are:

Animation/Adventure/Comedy: 8.0 Movie Overall: 6.5.

This bunny has legs.
bob-the-movie-man25 July 2021
I appreciate I'm over 2 months late in seeing "Peter Rabbit 2". But the grandkids were staying for the weekend and wanted to see it again!

Positives:
  • This time the movie manages - "Paddington 2" style - to find a good balance between slapstick jokes that appeal to the target younger audience (my grandkids were roaring at certain bits) and the 'dragalong' adult audience. Some of these are gorgeously surreal - like the skiing badger in the Alps as a "university prank". It certainly passes the "6 laugh" test for a comedy, and generated a couple of good guffaws (the Austin Powers landing in the Aston Martin and the subsequent take-off was one for me).

  • In the first movie, James Corden's voicing of Peter Rabbit tended to grate with me enormously. Here he gamely plays up to that, accepting that he is a bit of a "marmite" character with a lot of people. It's a fine comic moment.

  • Rose Byrne and Domnhall Gleeson make a cute and watchable couple. (Rose Byrne could read the phone directory for me). They are well supported here by David Oyelowo ("Don't look into his eyes") who is the least villainous villain in any movie in recent memory! Also fun are trying to spot the guest voice artistes who include Margot Robbie, Sia, Elizabeth Debicki, Sam Neill, Lennie James and Hayley Atwell.

Negatives:
  • A few of the jokes don't quite land (a one-note cockeral story, for example, is overplayed).

  • As I've been doing some Supporting Artist work recently, I've become obsessed with observing Extras and the continuity of Extras in shots. There are a few inconsistencies in the mix on this one!

Summary Thoughts: It's fair to say (although I never actually wrote a full review for it) that I was NOT a fan of the original Peter Rabbit movie from 2018. Corden grated; there was not enough for adult viewers and some of the included scenes were highly questionable: try explaining to a three-year-old why Peter was stabbing a dead old man in the eye with his finger! I've avoided watching it again on the TV like the plague.

This sequel was, I thought, much better, being entertaining for both kids and adults. I wonder if I now watched the first movie I might find it, in hindsight, more palatable? Perhaps I will give it a try sometime.

Absolutely awful film, rating boosters giving this 10/10 emplying it rates among Green mile, Shawshank as greatest films ever made.. it ain't.

First film was superb, how it should be but this is a god awful in comparison.. padding out jokes, cringe worthy set pieces.. even kids would think eh at some bits. Ignore the 10/10 ones... It ain't that good.

Don't underestimate Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway
jaywensley200413 June 2021
Can a movie be self-aware? Of course, we've seen many examples of such.

Can it be done WITHOUT breaking the Fourth Wall?

I've only seen it once before: "Noises Off".

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway does it better.

Brilliant.

Family movies are rare these days, but this one has laughs for a wide range at a fast pace. When Bea gets an offer to change her books into more profitable ones, Peter and her hubby bring her back to her true calling.

Expanded the adventure for its animal characters
witra_as18 January 2022
Unneccesary sequel which was slightly better than we think. Will Gluck really expanded the adventure with 'heist' that led to greater self-awareness especially for its animal characters. In the end it's still about family though got less exciting human story.
