Netflix on Tuesday unveiled four new Italian originals – two feature films and two series – that confirm its continued investment in Italy as local subscribers grow. The new projects also bolster the fact that the bulk of the streamer’s Italian productions are not high end and have a primarily local focus.
During a Rome presentation Eleonora Andreatta – affectionately known as Tinny – who is Netflix’s VP of Italian originals, said that Netflix remains “committed to our investment in Italy and Italian stories with conviction, continuing our long-term commitment to the country and its creative community.”
Andreatta, who owing to having caught Covid-19 was speaking remotely to the packed room, described Netflix’s lineup as being characterised by “Authentic stories, able to speak to the present [and] about the present and [which can] emotionally touch the audience on issues closest to the lives they live.”

British actors Julia Ormond (“Ladies in Black”) and Lydia Page (“Blue Jean”) are set to soon appear in psychological horror movie “Home Education” directed by Italy’s Andrea Niada.
Set in the scenic Sila plateau in Italy’s Southern Calabria region, “Home Education” revolves around a family that are followers of an esoteric cult and live in a secluded house deep in the woods.
Warner Bros Entertainment Italia, Italy’s Indiana Production and BlackBox Multimedia are producing with support from the Calabria Film Commission. Germany’s SquareOne Productions is co-producing and handling international sales. Warner Bros. Pictures will release the film in Italian theaters.
Page plays Rachel, a teenager raised according to the cult’s beliefs. When her father Philip dies, Rachel’s domineering mother, Carol, played by Ormond (see first look image), driven by the belief that Philip’s lifeless body will revive itself, forces her daughter to live with the corpse.

After making a splash with “Transparent,” Amazon Prime Video’s Italian original series “Prisma” will keep the navigation of gender identity at its core while catering to a young adult audience and connecting with Italy’s neorealist roots.
“Prisma,” which is currently shooting, is set in the city of Latina, just south of Rome, and its surrounding area, which used to be a swamp until the land was drained under Fascist rule. The area is now known for modernist architecture and fertile agriculture. The eight-episode show is centered around identical adolescent twins Marco and Andrea, who challenge gender norms in different ways, along with their group of friends who are also going through a similar journey.
“Prisma,” which means prism in Italian, is the brainchild of Ludovico Bessegato, who has gained local prominence as showrunner of “Skam Italia,” the Italian adaptation of the Nordic young adult drama that’s made...

Fremantle and Sky Italia are changing the “X Factor” format for the talent show’s upcoming Italian edition. The show will find four teams of performers formed without making any distinctions around gender, age or even whether they are an individual artist or a band.
The next edition of the globally distributed show — which in Italy plays on the Comcast-owned Sky Italia paybox — will mark the first “X Factor” in the world that is “changing a historic element of its format that has always characterized the show,” Fremantle Italy CEO Gabriele Immirzi said in a statement.
He added that “today, in 2021, in agreement with Syco Entertainment, we feel this element of the format is far removed from everyday reality, especially for the generations that participate at ‘X Factor.”
“We want to see the growth of musical talents without labels or distinctions that aren’t the value and artistic quality of the projects,...

While the Venice Film Festival is taking on strong symbolic significance as a catalyst to help restart Italy’s film industry, cameras are already rolling on sets across the country just as a fresh crop of completed movies is raring to make a splash by launching from the lagoon. Below is a compendium of standout Italian titles in various stages.
“The Hand of God” – Paolo Sorrentino in mid-September will start shooting this pic marking the Oscar-winner’s return to making a film in Naples, his hometown, 20 years after his dazzling debut “One Man Up.” Details are scarce about this pic being made for Netflix besides that it marks Sorrentino’s first intimate and personal feature. The title is believed to be a reference to Argentinian soccer icon Diego Maradona, who was the star scorer for S.S.C. Napoli and is known to be an idol for Sorrentino, an ardent Napoli fan.

Santiago De Compostela, Spain — With remakes already launched in the U.S., France, Germany and Italy since early 2018, the international rollout of “Skam” (Shame) may be far from over.
Germany’s Beta Film and Norwegian public broadcaster Nrk, which handle international sales on the original cult short-format drama hit, have received “strong” expressions of interest in “Skam” remakes from The Balkans, Russia, India, Japan, Brazil and Colombia, Christian Gockel, Beta Film Evp international sales and acquisitions, commented at a Conecta Fiction round table.
Little wonder. Remakes released or in production involve three European public broadcasters – France Televisions, which produces the French retread with Banijay Studio France; Germany’s Zdf/Funk, teaming on the German makeover with Bantry Bay; and Ntr, producing a Dutch reversion for the Netherlands’ Nrt/Npo.
Two telecom arms – Spain’s Movistar +, the pay TV division of Telefonica, and Timvision, the VOD service of Italia Telecom,...
