Fake news
paultapner10 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Four episodes into a twenty three episode season means we're gonna get filler material and or villain of the week. And it's latter here, whilst the main story arc ticks ever so slightly forward.

But actually not a bad little episode, this one. Spin, a character taken from the penultimate story arc of the Wally West run in the comics, back in the day, gets a bit of an update to go with the modern world and modern news media. And is quite an effective creation because they are so utterly unrepentant.

Meantime, Sherlocq Wells turns out not to be quite so annoying as you might have expected from last week. And again Ralph gets to do some serious detection work. I do hope they keep developing this side of the character.

There are some excellent visual effects in speedster moments too.

Caitlin alas just gets relegated to desk duty this week. And the family dynamics of the Allens are good drama, but getting annoyed about things that haven't happened yet and trying to justify things they havent done yet doesn't quite click.

A whole episode without Cisco though? For me a pleasant change of pace. 8/10 all in all.

Average episode

This episode was alright. The villains powers were intersting but her motives were lame. It was nice Ralph actually be helpful for a change. Seeing iris trying to cook try being the operative word. The reveal for why Nora doesn't like iris wasn't all that though her reason was justified. How cicada and the other new metas got their abilities? Hopefully the flash doesn't turn into a show for children and get a little more adult.

Season 5 is slowing down already?
garabedian1231 November 2018
I thought season 5 was off to a much better start than season 4. Thats is until this episode!. IT was so lame. Things happened with no real explanation. Female drama ruins all shows and it is now ruining this one. Could Iris have been this bad of a parent after Barry disappears? Every single female character did things in this episode that makes no sense. and it boggles my mind

A villain appropriate for our times. I hope she returns because she'll make a great foil for Iris going forward

Phenomenal !! Steady Pace this season so far !
mysticalviper-6653631 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Reason this is a 9 for me is because again the only thing I wish is Iris to stop being team leader and go back to the blog otherwise, Cicada is by far the most interesting villain since Reverse Flash... he seems to have a mystery that I haven't personally felt since earlier seasons. Sherloque and Ralph are eh this episode could be written a little better but with a little more I feel as if they could line up to be a humorous duo! Cisco not being in the episode, flat out sucks can't deny it but yes furthers plot and makes since. Vibe is dead. Nora was weaker this episode but still compelling especially with the family dynamic. Season 5 so far is phenomenal !! Yes I waited to the end but what going on with Cicada and his strength!!

Whats happened to this show...
sumtim3s00n31 October 2018
Every episode is worse than the last one. Cheesy, extremely poorly written, everything from dialogues to plots and fights is one dimensional and on the lvl of a first grader. Not to mention so very PC it is sickening. It used to be a solid superhero show. Now its unwatchable trash.

Reminds me of the 1980's!
asb_deutsch5 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
When I was kid, I was watching the famous 1980's Superman TV series. I remember when someone stuffed a dynamite in a baseball and Clark Kent doesn't come out as Superman but disguises himself as a baseball player and hits the ball so high in the air that it explodes and no one gets hurt...Those old good memories I still cherish!

Switching the topic now. The director played it smart by going in the roots of the Allen Family. No Devoe, but this time we get to see Kiana Madeira, who looks quite hot! Though her motives were not on the spot perfectly, we see that the director has shown her as not a villain but a necessary evil. The meta technology was also very creative. Hats off too Brent Crowell!

My ratings (based on what I marked on IMDb): Season 1: 200/23 = 8.69; Season 2: 193/23= 8.23; Season 3: 188/23= 8.17; Season 4: 146/23= 6.65 and Season 5= 27/4= 6.75

Another great episode!
cvt-6597131 October 2018
This episode was very good and I think cicada is a very intriguing villain. The only reason I didn't give this episode a 10/10 is because Cisco isn't in it!

The Flash stumbles...
jaythezoomster12 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After three very solid episodes in a row, it was a given that the show would stumble at a point and that's all "News Flash" is; a stumble.

After a promising opening in the loft and a hilariously funny and enjoyable softball game, "News Flash" takes a turn for the worst.

I'm gonna be honest, Spyn is not a good meta. The actress isn't great and her power set runs out of fun within the first few times she uses it. I also found a lot of the family drama this episode to feel forced at times (especially the ending scene, how dumb are Barry and Iris?).

This episode might have been a lost cause if not for a tremendous side plot with Sherloque and Ralph as they look into Cicada's mask. Ralph was feeling pretty insecure about a new detective being on the team and "News Flash" proved that he's just as good as any multiversal detective out there.

Thanks to a boring and lame metahuman threat, some awful family drama and just a boring middle stretch, Season 5 hits its first stumble. It's not a complete loss, though, as a subplot manages to keep the episode MOSTLY afloat landing "News Flash" as a 6/10 - "Okay".

INTRIGUING SIDE PLOTS AND A MAJOR TWIST!
masterlukewharris30 October 2018
Again, flash viewers, this episode is one not to miss. Ralph may be annoying to some people but his character again has been developed in this episode with some sherloque on the sides... very interesting villain, way better than the busmetas...

Fun, cheesy, and some more details on the villain.
cruise0115 June 2019
The Flash Episode 5.04 (3 out of 5 stars).

This episode Flash and his team come across another metahuman that is causing Nora and Flash to conflict with each other. So she can write a headline article. Meanwhile, they are trying to investigate and solve the mystery on who is Cicada.

Thin plot, some cheesy fun action, and the showdown with Nora and Flash was fun.

A great episode with good acting...
Kiiiraaa31 October 2018
I thought this episode was going to be like a 7.5/10 - 8.5/10 because of the rating on here. Actually, it's a great episode. The only reason the rating isn't, at least, 9/10 is because there's a lot of focus on Iris (and as we all know, Iris haters are passionate about giving bad ratings). Buuut, Iris was amazing this episode. Whereas the beautiful and heart-wrenching acting usually comes from Grant, it's coming from Candice this time. Next to some funny Sherloque/Ralph scenes, we also get to explore what happens between Iris and Nora in the future and why she is so mad at her mother. The scenes between Nora, Iris and Barry truly touched me and I can't wait to find out if Nora will eventually forgive Iris!

What Has Happened to This Show...
ThomasDrufke3 November 2018
I'm not sure what most people are seeing with season 5 and why they think it's been a quality show, but I have found next to nothing about this season to be redeemable. We have a fake news meta, one of the single worst scenes in CW history (with the softball game), an absence of Cisco for no good reason, and the continuing lack of any sort of intimidating villain. In all seriousness, who thought that softball scene was something worth putting on television? And the performances this season haven't been great, but it really all comes down to the writing. If this show had any sort of guts, they would stop adding characters to an increasingly packed show, and find a way to creatively remove them from season to season. With the addition of Nora, the series regulars consist of: Barry, Cisco, Caitlin, Joe, whatever horrible version of Wells we have, Ralph, Cecille, Iris, Nora, and Cicada. That's 10 people you have to give warranted screen time to week to week. This is compared to around 5 or 6 during the first season. It's just too much, and this show is on the brink of losing my interest completely.

Bad smoke alarm
bassyparry5 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The smoke alarm depicted in the first scene of the episode was extremely unrealistic, only beeping quietly 2-3 times before turning off without any fanning of the smoke. If the smoke alarm was realistic, it would have beeped throughout the entire first scene and kept going for the rest of the episode until the flash funnelled up the smoke and destroyed the smoke alarm with a lightning bolt. In the case of a real fire, it would have probably failed to do its purpose and everyone would have died.

It's getting too slow to be fast...
Rk-rohitrai31 October 2018
After the gradual down Hill from first season I really wanted this season to be good magically, but my wishes are slowly dying with ever new episode because Nora is chock stabbing it very fast. She is dumbing the whole thing down. I am having cringe attacks because of her. Last two episodes I fall asleep in middle of it. Too much badly written drama. It's seems like they are dragging it.

Ummm... Did they hire Supergirl's writers?
jhuebel5 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Did The Flash producers hire some of the Supergirl writers or something? Because this season (and this episode in particular) has not been good. The first episode, I thought, "Oh, Nora is cute. She's kind of a light and fun character." But she's really a naive idiot. She's a CSI in her time? Not a chance. And then they pull the ol' switcheroo. She's gay. *sigh* So, The Flash is headed down the PC/SJW/LGBTQ road? I'm out.

Getting worse
hnt_dnl31 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I figured out why the show is getting such high marks in Season 5. Most fans have bailed and only the hardcore fanboys/girls are giving these stellar reviews. Season 4 was the pits, so anything that doesn't completely suck looks like The Godfather. This was easily the worst episode of the season and guess who the focus was? You guessed it, Iris 'The Virus' West-Allen. The entire episode was Iris begging for her daughter from the future, Nora '30-Year Old Teenager' West-Allen (she took her Mom's hyphenated married last name, who does that?) to like her. West-Allen the Younger is basically the only character on the show who Iris hasn't ruined with her mere presence so of course Iris just has to try and get somebody to actually like her. Oops, but the kid already DOES know Iris, or at least the older version of her, who based on this episode sounds a lot like the present version. So Iris' kid hates her and we finally find out why. Eh, I mean there's a million other reasons to hate her, but at least the kid has got solid instincts. It's about time someone exposed Iris for the awful person she actually is. And Candice Patton is obviously not taking acting lessons in between seasons. It's Season FIVE! I think it's about time to consider it.

Boring and whiny Iris
aidanrm-4716231 October 2018
Poor writing they literally made a meta human that does fake news. Talk about laziness like the writers didn't have any other way or another mystery but no we got family problems and whininess especially from Iris The Whole Nora Iris family problem was the worst they did even have any good cliff hangovers at the end.

A Frustrating "The Flash" Leads To Being The Worst Season 5 Episode So Far...
Sam_Ash_7631 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
An mediocre episode of "The Flash" highlights some of the best and worst aspects of a normally good (except season 4 and some of 3) TV series. The good being the direction, acting and humor thrown in. The bad being just how horrible of a person Iris is to Nora and the letdown of the villain of the week.

We finally learn why Iris is hated by Nora and the reason is... a bit of a letdown if I'm honest. Iris suppresses Nora's powers in the future and never tells her that she has them. Yep, you read that correctly, she NEVER tells her about them. I've written about Iris before in previous reviews but she has never made me so infuriated to the point where I say "I hope your character dies" out loud, but now, I really do. I'd completely understand if Iris didn't tell Nora about her powers when Nora is a child, but, to not tell her when Nora is an adult is despicable and she should be ashamed of herself. Also, Barry taking Iris's side in the argument with her and Nora without having good evidence as to why Iris is right is just... a horrible thing to do to Nora. God, I hated that subplot.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, lets get to the better aspects of this weeks episode. I liked the introduction with the West Allen family trying to have breakfast together and the softball stuff. I also liked the idea of the mask and Joe taking Nora in at the end of the episode. And... that's about it, besides the previously mentioned acting and direction.

Unfortunately, there isn't a lot to talk about in this weeks episode review because it isn't a worthwhile episode to watch. It's thoroughly mediocre and a massive disappointment and step backwards in a show where its just finding its feet again after a terrible fourth season.

A LIST OF PROS/CONS FOR THIS EPISODE:

Pros:
  • Nora is still a really fun element of the show.
  • I loved Joe taking Nora in his home.
  • The Direction, acting and editing is fine.
  • Softball section is fine.

Cons:
  • Iris is infuriating as usual.
  • Barry taking Iris's side in the argument.
  • The villain of the week is crap.
  • The CGI in the fight between Flash and Nora is... mediocre.

FINAL VERDICT: 5.4/10

Ranking/Reviewing every Flash episode: News Flash
lbramson14 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm tired of this soap opera drama! Nora gets mind controlling by the news, no, I'm not making this up. Nora knows a secret that future Iris has. The main story is stupid because, again, she's mind controlled by the NEWS! And Nora's actress cannot play a threatening villain for the life of her, she seriously says "what I have to do is kill you." The other mellow drama made me think I slipped in the wrong show by mistake. It feels more like a soap opera than the show I loved way back when. It genuinely feels like watching Days of Our Lives except the characters have superpowers! Bottom of the list, but I fear that the worst is yet to come.

4.7/10-Bad👎
