Relentlessly positive and embraces the very best that life has to offer
themadmovieman25 October 2020
I really enjoyed this movie. Cheesy, sappy romantic dramas aren't entirely my cup of tea, but All My Life tells an admittedly familiar story with a real can-do attitude, and that makes it an absolute joy to watch. It may never be the tearjerker it often wants to be, but it's a story full of optimism that left me with a smile on my face.

Now, you'll almost certainly have seen romantic dramas that deal with terminal illnesses. More recently, The Fault In Our Stars and Me Before You have both impressed in the genre, but it still feels like a story that's really overplayed in Hollywood.

However, while All My Life is far from innovative in its screenplay, the unique way that it tells such a well-trodden story is really great to see. Based on a true story, the film has an extra level of passion to it, but it's also imbued with a more realist sense of optimism than the melodrama of so many manufactured Hollywood outings.

Almost from the start, you know what's coming, and the film knows it too. So, rather than getting bogged down in telling a depressing, hyperbolic tragedy, All My Life looks on the bright side of life, and really makes your heart sing as a result.

If you're looking for a tearjerker, this isn't your movie. At times, when it wants to be a bit sadder, it's a little too on-the-nose and abrupt, cheapening what is otherwise a very elegant tale.

However, for a film that deals with an often sad story in an energetic and optimistic way, then All My Life is absolutely perfect. Enormously enjoyable from the start as we follow Jessica Rothe and Harry Shum Jr. falling in love, it's a colourful and vibrant affair that's full of far more joy than anguish.

Rothe and Shum Jr. are just perfect together on screen, and though I don't want to say it for fear of sounding like a teenage girl, are a really cute couple that you root for all the way through.

The film's bright, positive energy is so wonderful, and even though the core of its story is very sad, you'll find yourself smiling and laughing from beginning to end here. That's because All My Life follows through on its own message and embraces the best moments in life, without dwelling on the sad.

You can make your own mind up as to whether that's a realistic or ridiculous mentality, but for the 90 minutes that this film runs, it's an absolute joy to sit back and bask in its relentless positivity.

Overall, I really liked All My Life. Yes, it can be cheesy and sappy at times, and it's never the most effective tearjerker. However, with an active and positive attitude to a story that's so often told in irritatingly melodramatic fashion, it's an enormously enjoyable watch, filled with wonderful performances, colourful visuals, humour and an appreciation for the very best that life can offer.

Definitely worth a watch!!
samratsingraur2 December 2020
All My Life is a pretty positive heartwarming film with leads that are impossible not to love and a supporting cast who felt like a big family. The soundtrack is also a stand out. However, It sure guarantees you to shed a tear. I think the director is more than aware of how to operate his audience into psychological submission, but in a year like 2020, overt sugary cliches aren't necessarily a bad thing when the packaging is as appealing as this.I loved how the movie embraces the best moments of life rather than dwelling on the sad ones. It sure did made me smile. Also, hands down to one of the best film proposals.

Well worth watching

All My Life is sugary enough to give you a cavity, but in its better moments it is a reminder to embrace life and roll with the punches, no matter what happens. I recommend it. James Welch Henderson, Arkansas 3/11/2021

Decent enough & I get people watch movies to escape..
ts-00008 August 2021
That being said.. Just felt lacking in realism, even though it was based on real events.

There's always this romanticism that is given to illnesses, which can overshadow times of connection to a serious storyline.

Casting was ok,cinematography & music too.

Would I watch it again? Not for awhile,as it didn't carry a huge impact on me.

It's worth seeing,if you enjoy those cast in the movie.

Based on a true story, makes it more endearing!
LiveLoveLead8 August 2021
Based on a true story (they show the actual couple at the end), this movie takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions, happy tears and smiles for the sweet romantic parts and sad tears for the heartbreaking parts. It's not the most original or best film out there, but it was a romantic and beautiful story that was very delightful to watch. The characters were charming, the acting was decent, the music was fun, and the message was meaningful. It might be a little to cute/sappy/chick flick for some, but it is an enjoyable and touching film IMHO! Aug2021.

SAPPY SENTIMENTALISM DONE RIGHT...!
masonfisk3 December 2020
A soon to be released romantic melodrama of a doomed romance which still manages to be uplifting & soul stirring (& based on a true story by the by!). Starring Jessica Rothe (from the Happy Death Day films) & Harry Shum (from Glee) as a couple that meet cute during college (he works as a software writer but wants to be a chef which she sees right away & pushes him towards that goal) & soon move in together w/a healthy bevy of friends who support them. The wrinkle in the universe comes about in the form of cancer which is caught early (Shum gets a piece of his liver removed) but no sooner does the story progress, his cancer soon becomes the fatal kind spurring the couple & their orbit of friends to come together to plan & execute a wedding before the inevitable happens. Never bringing up the fact they're a mixed race couple is hopefully refreshing (they are a couple that just exists) is a major plus for a film that is entertaining (cue the musical montages) but on such auto-pilot it could be on rails w/a bevy of colorful supporting players like Molly Hagen (from Some Kind of Wonderful) as Rothe's mother, Jay Pharaoh (from SNL) as one Shum's friends, Chrissie Fit (Pitch Perfect 2 & 3) as one Rothe's friends, Ever Carradine (Robert's daughter) as Shum's boss at an eatery, Keala Settle (from The Greatest Showman) as a coffee shop employee & Mario Cantone (from Sex & the City) as a wedding organizer. Kudos to both Rothe & Shum for elevating the material & especially Rothe for acting outside her comfort bubble (coupled w/the Valley Girl remake from earlier this year) to show she has the acting chops to back up her good looks.

Pleasantly sweet.

I'm a sucker for a movie based on true events most of the time. This movie didn't disappoint. It makes you think about you and what you are doing with your life right now. Are you happy? Are you living your best life or trying to live in the past? I appreciate this movie and the live that it shared.

Sadly, not emotionally fulfilling, but worth the casual watch....
PerryAtTheMovies6 December 2020
Initial Thoughts: It's difficult for me to say that this film wasn't good. Though the chemistry between the lead actors, Jessica Rothe and Harry Shum Jr., was almost perfect. I feel that a lot of context, and true heartfelt emotional understanding is lost, by the way this film was put together. "All My Life" was beautifully shot, and the camera angles made everything feel natural to tell the story. But while the cinematography was well done. It was not done well enough to tell the story emotionally. The story fails to garner any real traction by floating along the surface of the relationship of the characters. What do I mean by that? In the very quick and dirty, hour and a half that this film is, we're bounced way to quickly through the relationship aspect, instead of being shown what hardships and turmoils the couple actually experienced, to bring the true love story to light. It's great that they had such awesome family and friends to surround and support them during this difficult time, but too many bits and pieces were left out to make the story complete, and emotionally fulfilling.

Overall: As a "critic" I wouldn't say to your movie buff "this is worth your time". BUT if you're just a casual movie goer. Who doesn't care what someone who nitpicks a movie thinks and you enjoy a romantic style movie, then I would say go for it. Again, for me this film wasn't emotionally fulfilling, but maybe it will be for you.

Enjoy the show!

Be Grateful For Every Day
solojere5 October 2021
All My Life opens up with the idea that we only have so much time. Jenn states, "The average person lives 27,375 days. That's all we get." As the film progresses, it becomes clear that this movie is more about not taking anything for granted because any day it could all be taken away. I won't give anything away, but I will say it was an emotional movie, and I'm glad I watched it. It's always hard reviewing a film like this because how can you judge something that happened in real life? I'm not really familiar with any of the actors in this film. The only ones I recognized were Chrissie Fit from the Pitch Perfect films and Keala Settle from the greatest showman, and they both had very small parts. However, I don't feel like this took away from the film. I thought the two leads had great chemistry and really sold that the two were in love.

Overall, I really liked All My Life. It is not perfect. It's a bit cheesy and sappy at times, and it's never the most effective tearjerker. However, I think it is good we all sometimes reflect on the fact that we need to be grateful for every day because you never know when that will be taken away.

So basic and boring
xpunisherx10 January 2021
I love corny predictable romance movies, but this is just so boring and plain. I never really felt their connection and the storyline moved so fast. You could watch any other rom com and get the same enjoyment if not more.

Jessica Rothe is amazing in this role.
gfong-9997025 December 2020
I have a headache from crying so hard. There is a powerful message in this movie. If you are lucky enough to find love, go in all the way. Dive deep, even though you know your heart is going to shatter into a million little pieces in the end. "All My Life" is a movie about a couple who have an elaborate wedding (through the support of their close friends and a wildly successful GoFundMe campaign), even though the groom has only months to live as he is dying of terminal cancer. I heard a quote that I'll never forget from the father of a man gunned down senselessly. He said, "grief is the purest expression of love". I'd like to add to that another variation on a theme. "Love is the purest expression of love". When I saw "LaLa Land", I remember instantly being totally mesmerized by Jessica Rothe. She was one of Emma Stone's roommates, so she did not have a major role. But she has a star quality that I have not witnessed since seeing Cybill Shepherd in "The Last Picture Show". She is such a remarkable actress. I am certain that she is going to become a major, major star. Rothe and her costar Harry Shum, Jr. (from Crazy Rich Asians) have a magical chemistry in this film. You will fall in love with each of them as individuals, and in multitudes as a couple. This film is just absolutely amazing. It's a love story that redefines love stories. One of my favorite lines is when Shum says, "I don't know if I want to go through with this wedding, all our guests will see is a widow in white". Oh God I'm starting to cry again. Please see this movie. Take my word for it, you will be moved to tears. Don't hold back, dive into this story along with this beautiful couple. Though you know what's going to happen in the end, it will not allow you to keep your heart guarded from the inevitable tragedy to come. And that's what makes it an amazing love story. For grief is the purest expression of love.

Nice film with similar plot

Warning: Spoilers
All My Life is a 2020 Romantic Drama starring Harry Chum Jr and Jessica Routhe. Based on a true story about Solomon Chau and Jennifer Carter the movie is about a young man named Solomon Chau who meets and falls for a woman named Jennifer whom he met at a bar. But tragedy however strikes as Solomon is diagnosed with liver cancer and has months left to live. Will he and Jen ever get married? Or will he die before the wedding?.

If you read the story of Solomon Chau you probably know what's going to happen in the end. The chemistry is good, the story reminds me of The Fault In Our Stars meets Dying Young. Also stars Keala Seattle from The Greatest Showman and comedian Jay Pharaoh as Sol's best friend.

They tried so hard but the relationship felt so forced. Something was missing. I love the main lady from Happy Death Day so I was excited but found myself disappointed

Unrealistically positive
Gordon-118 January 2021
This film deals with a hard topic, but it is unrealistically positive and fluffy. Colours are vibrant, people are always happy, and there's always nice food around. It doesn't even tell or show directly about death, which is a main theme in this film.

Cliched but endearing
rivertam267 December 2020
2020 has brought us many things film wise. It hasn't been the greatest year and there's really no need to rush out to the theaters for this. But the film is a reminder of a simpler time when entertaining three hankie romantic dramas such as this would crowd multiplexes. Conceptually it's pretty generic and all the cliches are in place but the attractive and talented stars make it worth the watch. Jessica Rothe of Happy Death Day and Harry Shum Jr. Of Glee have awesome chemistry. The film tells the true story of a couple who are about to get married when they discover one of them has cancer. The movie is funny, moving and sad and as an added bonus at the end we meet the real couple. Sure I wished for just a bit more originality but was happy with this endearing little gem.

All My Life
JoBloTheMovieCritic9 March 2021
7/10 - whether she is reliving the same day over and over again, rocking 80s style, or now dealing with the impending loss of her love, Jessica Rothe never disappoints and elevates this from a rather run of the mill romantic drama to something special

Heartbreaking
pkxcsqin4 February 2021
Whether you have lost someone or ever truly loved someone you; you will feel this deep. Although it moves a bit fast from them meeting to them going on a date, they still cover the important points of their lives. I actually researched it while watching and it hurt even more.

Ghastly Hallmark Movie of the Week.
naturenomad24 December 2020
If you are expecting a full on tear jerker, you need not to worry about bringing a box of Kleenex because this movie will not make you cry. Horribly miscast and badly directed, this film is nothing but cringey scenes after cringe inducing scenes. The two beautifully attractive leads have no chemistry. The acting was really forced and dry. You may watch this on a plane to kill off time but you are better staring at a white freshly painted wall. This movie was dreadful and the scene by the bridge was more painful then a double root canal. Avoid!

Affectionate Sol & Jen's true love story
witra_as26 August 2021
Affectionate Sol & Jen's true love story got adapted into sweet sappy romance drama by Marc Meyers. Not entirely unprecedented, Rothe & Shum Jr. Showed positive energy and nice chemistry in their relationship and remind us to embrace life-live in the moment(s)

eparomen21 February 2021
No chemistry between actors. His acting was also very uncomphy to watch. Didn't feel the movie at all. The storyline is beautifull but worked out so bad. I am the biggest fan of romantic movies but this one was so hard to finish.

A Must Watch
sanskritikarn24 December 2020
This movie was so great, especially in times like these.

A great story of laughing and living with the right amount of sadness and truthful heartbreaking moments.

I was crying and laughing and smiling and that's the best a movie can get isn't it?

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Great performances by the cast. Emotional story about a happy couple. When the other is diagnosed with cancer. It does have romantic cliche. But it was worth the watch.

Injustice, and unwatchable.
sagetwo23 March 2022
I know it is based on a true love story. But, sadly, the movie didn't do it justice. There were misinformation, over-the-top elements, and no insights into the what happened adter they found out Sol has cancer. Also, the movie was rushed. You can watch this movie while doing work, and know what is going on.
