- A fourth signal leads the U.S.S. Discovery to an insular world, where Pike is forced to make a life-changing choice. Burnham and Spock investigate a Section 31 ship gone rogue, leading to a discovery with catastrophic consequences.
- In the attack from Control-Leland, Gabrielle's time crystal in her suit was destroyed. There is no way she can time travel without it.
A new signal appears over Boreth, a planet which is sacred to Klingons and has a monastery where Klingon monks guard time crystals. Since Gabrielle cannot time travel now, it is clear that the signals are being created by another entity. Burnham wants to join forces with Georgiou to pursue Control-Leland, but Pike wants to ensure that the data is kept away from Leland. He focuses on Boreth. The time crystal will allow the Discovery to send the Sphere data into the future again, and away from Control.
Pike consults L'Rell and seeks permission to take the time crystal from the monastery which has not been in any outside contact for generations. These are the same monks that Tyler and L'Rell left their son to be raised by. L'Rell will not allow Tyler to beam to the surface as the confirmation of his or the boy's existence will unravel the peace upon which the Klingon Empire has been built. Pike decides to go instead. L'Rell warns that even a Klingon has never managed to take a time crystal from the monastery without great sacrifice.
Pike visits the monastery to retrieve a time crystal and finds that their son is now a fully grown adult named Tenavik (Kenneth Mitchell). Pike convinces Tenavik to part with the time crystal with the knowledge that otherwise all sentient life will cease to exist in the Galaxy. Time flows differently in the monastery, so even though Tenavik was brought to the monastery a few months ago, he is a fully grown adult by now. Tenavik explains that life on Boreth is affected by the crystals and that if Pike takes one, he will not be able to change the future that it shows him. Pike sees a future where he is severely disabled in an accident on-board his ship, but chooses to take the crystal anyway to serve the greater good.
Jett Reno can also see that Stamets and Culber are not getting along with each other. She reaches out to Culber to try and help him understand that Stamets is really hurting. Reno says Stamets cannot be distracted if they are going to complete this mission successfully. She says that she lost her own partner in the Klingon war. Culber has a second chance and he should not let it go.
Meanwhile, Burnham and Spock investigate a Section 31 ship that had checked in ten minutes later than usual. Burnham takes a shuttle to investigate the ship. Saru sends Spock to protect Burnham. They find all of the crew dead except for one. Kamran Gant (Ali Momen), an old colleague of Burnham's, helps them regain control of the ship. Kamran isolates Burnham and reveals that he is Control. He says that Burnham and Gabrielle have failed to change the future and it always ends the same way. Spock also realizes while running a systems diagnostic on the ship that Kamran has been possessed by Control Kamran attempts to transfer Control into Burnham's body. He says that he lured Burnham to the ship as she is the most effective tool retrieve the Sphere data from the Discovery.
Spock is able to stop Control with magnetism, and they escape back to Discovery. Spock says that Control has identified Burnham as the true threat to its objectives.
Pike brings the time crystal back to the Discovery. Pike reveals to Tyler and L'Rell that their son is healthy and is called Tenavik. Burnham tells Pike that Control can now co-opt carbon based bodies and can transfer from one body to another. The Section 31 fleet soon arrives. It took a supernova to power the first time crystal, so the Discovery crew does not have the tools to activate the crystal from Boreth. This forces Pike to order Discovery be destroyed to keep the Sphere data away from Control.
