Decent episode, felt like a actual Star Trek episode.
ccroca10 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
All I can say is the more Anson Mount as Capt. Pike the better. The tie in with The Cage 1966 pilot episode was appreciated. Frankly it would be great to see a pre ST:TOS with Mount, Rebecca Romijn as #1 and Spock. But whatever. As always I enjoyed Doug Jones and like what his character Saru brings to the series. My hope is that more consideration given to cannon.

Congratulations, Star Trek FANS are getting Season 3!!!!

My Goodness what a hell of a Eps!!! Normally I would make a overly long post, and the plots, twists and turns-then go into the pros and cons. I am not feeling too well, and don't have the time to post that. I am very happy with tonight's eps, and excited we are getting season 3!!! Time to goto Funky Town with this DISCO!!!

Getting better.
NinjaAnt8 March 2019
This episode was amazing. This show is going from strength to strength. A few minor things, redesigned aliens for example, are not too hard to overlook.

I did lol at the review saying they can't see it reaching season 3, you do realise it has just been renewed right?

Fantastic, well written episode. Aced the Talosians and Vina. Peck with an exceptional portrayal of Spock. This season is going from strength to strength.

What an episode!
nemetor8 March 2019
OMG I really like STD! As all other Star Trek series this one has its up and downs and, oh god, this was a very well written episode. And this version of Spock feels way too real! I can only say "good job and continue like that"!

P.S. I really liked the slow pace in this episode!

Previously on Star Trek.......

Warning: Spoilers
As soon as I saw those words, in that type face, I knew it was going to be my favourite episode.

Visually stunning, as always. I was worried (for no reason it turns out) how they were going to meld (pun intended) this series with the rest nd I needn't have. It was expertly done, acted, written and directed.

Not going to mention Ethan Peck's portrayal as Spock as, for me now, he IS Spock. . The subplot featuring the ever brilliant Wilson Cruz was also expertly done, an all round awesome episode.

To go boldly....
leighmas8 March 2019
The point of Star Trekk in my opinion is not to be the same as previous series or be a stickler for the rules, which many reviews seem to point out, that this show is not following the rules and that the new look aliens have changed too much. If you want to be stuck in the past.. go ahead. For me Star Trekk is about the future and looking futuristic, which is what this series does.. it exceeds expectations, in graphics, cgi, and a cast that is full of variety. Spock has a beard? So what? Star Trekk should be about going boldly where no man has gone before, doing things that are different, looking futuristic and not dated... the graphic are the best I have seen in a series and this contributes to a better feel of the show for me. It enhances the visual experience and an experience is what we are after. Glossy, stlyish, great acting.. 10/10 in my book.

Is this finally going somewhere?
MarsDiamond17 March 2019
After a wasted first season and a mixed start in the second, finally a solid episode. Focused writing, no blind actionism and some comprehensible character development. They even get into the motivation of the Talosians without messing up. Only downside on this one, the conflict between Spock an Michael feels kind of forced and Spock is to confident for someone who almost lost his mind. Anyway, a remarkable episode for this show.

Great episode.
leecun17018 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What a great episode! I loved seeing vina again. What a great job she did bringing across vinas lonliness. I really like it every time they show Vulcan. I would imagine the thing chasing micheal was a selat? And of course Vulcan has forests. They breathe don't they?

I think the new take on the talosians was great. It wasn't like they look all that different. Just modern.

I wish they made 24 episodes a season. This is the best trek ever for sure.

beautiful visual effects most def.
Ashitaka1379 March 2019
Im not a treky and i dont know much about all the previous ones, except the recent movies, but how can they come to the conclusion that something is from the future if they haven't visited every part of space and encountered every single civilization, especially when they are already aware of other parallel universes? I hope the next season of The Expanse does a better job with the sci-fi part. But beautiful visual effects most def.

Trials and tribble-ations part 2
boborci-813348 March 2019
Somebody said DS-9 Voyager and Enterprise were bad, well ,this episode is not the first one which had a TOS crossover,it was made before in DS-9 .I observe the ' old guard trekkers' or 'gate keepers' ,the fans of the old series who don't like STD are missing, because finally, they decided to stop watching the series. So,the lack of bad reviews it doesn't mean this show is getting better.I still don't get it,Star Trek is a product which is supposed to be made in a way to be likeable to the fans, but the fans don't want prequels to TOS,they don't want to see their aliens being butchered by a lame team of make-up artists, they don't want cheesy uniforms and fantasy storylines, and yet, this is what they get.The fans want a captain Worf tv series or a captain Nog tv series and they know this ,but nobody listen to them anymore, because it will be too easy to please the fans and all they want is to shock us,to bring new people ,new fans and to trash the old fans memories .You , dear producers, will regret this, very soon ,when your old fan base will magically disappear, forever.Old broken hearted TMP/TNG/DS-9/VOY/ENT fan out.

Not a good idea.
primeadministrator8 March 2019
Starting the episode with "The Cage" was a very bad idea. It contrasts the quality science fiction writing of the 1960s Star Trek with the low quality writing of Star Trek Discovery. It also shows the intent of Alex Kurtzman to try and harmonize the events of STD with the events of Roddenberry's Star Trek which is no longer possible due to the entire first season of STD and some of this season. The disjointed, piece-meal way Kurtzman's clown car has gone about trying to force STD into the prime timeline of Gene Roddenberry is why I continue to score STD low. Kurtzman has claimed STD is actually in the same universe/timeline as the 1960s show, if that is the case, then he volunteered to respect that show and follow what has come before. Kurtzman isn't doing that, he's treading on the original timeline's stories and established canon. It is one thing to disrespect the visuals of the original (which Kurtzman did), that can be corrected by redoing the CG of the show. The dialogue and story however cannot be corrected and the damage has been done. The closer they bring STD to the events of the ST:TOS, the worse STD gets. If STD were its own universe/timeline, this would not be an issue. As a stand alone episode, this one was actually good, but put into the context of it being in the same time and universe as ST:TOS, the episode is 1-star because Kutrzman's team keeps disrespecting the source material and changing the timeline so badly that it is essentially making Star Trek's canon a jumbled mess (worse than it already was). If STD becomes its own universe (something I WISH they'd do), then I will no longer hold it to the standards of ST:TOS, but as it stands now I have to and in keeping to the storyline of the original canon, STD fails miserably.

FANtastic!
darrencole-738148 March 2019
I just started watching Discovery. Loved TOS, and Next Generation. But could never watch DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise.. They just didn't capture the magic.. All that said All episodes of Discovery have been great so far, with "If Memory Serves" being the best I've seen yet. One of the best Trek (all shows included) episodes ever. The intro really set the tone.. flashbacks to "The Cage" were great! What trek fan wouldn't cheer for the inclusion of Leonard Nimoy as a part of a Trek episode? Anson Mount brings that original series feel to Discovery and I hope he remains a part of the show after Season 2. Great stuff, this show needs to be on broadcast tv.. fantastic

Outstanding episode
JLVidal9 March 2019
This is a Star Trek for the 21st century. Expertly written, very well acted and with a main arc that finally seems to be going somewhere.

And Spock... Sorry, but it has made me forget Zachary Quinto version in just a couple of episodes!

From Beginning to End Star Trek True and True
starsurfer8325 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The TOS clips at the beginning whetting the appetite for the events of "The Cage" gave me goosebumps . . . and then for the show to go on and lay some of the groundwork for that tying all of the ST universes together . . . just WOW!

This had everything . . . a good ol' fashioned brawl pulling no punches (though after some flat melodrama) . . . espionage on multiple fronts . . . the Discovery version of the Cage bald dudes (lack of formality intended! . . . they just creep me out), . . . and then, finally, the "angel" brought back to land and described somewhat scientifically.

Keep it coming! Though, the Discovery isn't the only ship I'd want to be on . . . I'm also feeling a little bit of insurrection myself . . . almost ready to join Team Georgiou.

The answer of the Forrests of Vulcan
moyetbear-224-5849608 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Vulcan had several wilderness preserves. (DS9: "Life Support")

So if they had them in the future, why not in the past, it's not revisionist, it's clarification!

The first Star Trek crossover since the original series.
vos6910 March 2019
This episode is hopefully the first of many REAL Star Trek series to finally begin. It's not often a series gets to me emotionally but this one did. It is by far the best episode of any series I have seen yet in the Star Trek Saga. Watch it. Period.

Beautifully Layered
Hitchcoc7 March 2020
This is a beautiful episode with a networking of terrific events, all designed to get us into the five year mission. We see Pike moving toward the inevitable and Spock's "crime" is explained. There is tension throughout and knowing the Talosians from the very first TOS episode, it is fun to see what happens on that planet that makes its way into this one.

Best episode so far
jarvisba16 March 2019
I'm still not holding out too much hope for the season as a whole but this episode was decent. A step up in terms of writing and acting. CGI and special effects work has been great all season and continues to be quality.

Game changer..
pete-4708 March 2019
The first series looked good but was overly complicated in plot and heavy going, but I was glad a second series was commissioned. Lessons have been learned and this series we're getting episodes very much more stand alone but with connections substantially easier to follow so the mind doesn't get bogged down. Without going into details, this is one of the best yet from any of the franchise and gives faith that the writers really know how to write good sci-fi and put it into the Star Trek universe rather than try to please an audience whose only experience of sci-fi is via the little box that sits in the corner of their living room. Talking of whom, I see there's still a couple of numptys giving 1/10. Maybe they won't be happy until a cute little schoolboy who happens to be the son of the captain's ex, or a mischievous but lovable Ferengi behind the bar are introduced to the series. Glad to see a third series is in the mix.

Bloated
doappel8 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Hmm. I don't get the enthusiasm for this episode.

There is extremely little relevant material for the greater story arc. We already knew about as much about the red angle, the only new information is that somehow life on several planets would end. Wow!

Considering this story deficiency, the plot is shockingly bloated, feels very 'constructed' and is often enough illogical. I won't bore you with details why it was completely unnecessary to travel to Talos, when simply sharing experiences was enough to heal Spock. Or how disappointing and shallow the Spock-Michael interaction was. Or how the communication with Pike could have been far more efficient, if they hadn't used Vina and her mastery in missing the point.

Why do they call it Star Trek?
alistairc_200012 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Story ripping off the Robert Silverberg Story Man in the maze seems to be the order of day.Lets decode Spocks brain. Etc. Commander Boredom is off in her inter galactic shuttle cruising the universe. Remember this is 10 years before the enterprise went on its five year mission and I am struggling to see how Pike would know about the aliens. Not content with ripping off Harry Harrison's Cheddite drive but playing it straight we are now treated to another awful episode. So they have the mushroom drive which lets them travel the universe instantaneously. This makes a mockery of Star Trek plus Voyager, stuck in the alpha quadrant? Apply the shroom drive! Now it only lasted one season. Did Spock ever mention a sista in the original series? Nope? Did he have a beard and look like one of the Klingon, nope? Series 2 has been so bad but this was not the worst episode. That was last weeks. Imagine there is now a series which makes Spocks Brain seem like Oscar winning material. Positives, Pike has not died yet. Negatives everything else.

Another Great Episode
sbulgacs8 March 2019
Wasn't going to comment on this one as any one claiming it's a bad episode in anyway is lying or deluded. Their hatred and narrative should be becoming clearer to most Trekkies now. One reviewer {hater} is claiming there aren't any trees or forests on Vulcan? Would this be one of the people insisting the science on Discovery is not based in fact? As another reviewer has stated Vulcans breathe oxygen meaning..... Another claims to be speaking for the fans/Trekkies. Just need to point out many, many Trekkies including myself are enjoying the show. You do not speak for Trekkies.

Still no idea why the haters are still watching the show, even though some of the naysayers seem to have shifted from hate speech to more constructive criticism, which is great.
