Excellent Western with a Big Heart & Martial Arts
RussHog4 February 2021
I've loved this show since the first episode - but this fifth episode was quite special. It takes a detour from the central plot and takes our hero and his friend into the wastelands where they have a classic Wild West showdown in a saloon against a bunch of marauders. I had no idea what to expect going into it and was just really surprised by how well made it is. It's a little silly and hokey in a few parts but nothing takes away from the great Hollywood formula it pays homage to and ads some martial arts excitement in. Very well done!

great stand alone episode
davidmalaimo5 March 2021
After a few episodes of this show i was like "okay, this is cool." episode 4 i was sold, but this episode definitely double sold me. it's really cool to them get experimental and do a stand alone episode. it still adds a lot to the story. maybe not the plot so much, but great character development. sort of like the Breaking Bad episode "The Fly" but sadly most people would disagree with me on that. but this episode everyone whose digging this show will dig, as opposed to "The Fly" which sort of divided the BB fans.

pretty much a good ol "closed door western" which is a term i just coined but i'd imagine there's already a name for it. kinda like a "locked room mystery" where the killer had to be in the room and the question who did it. the closed door western is a western that pretty much confines itself to one room, or one building, for the most part. tarantino's The Hateful Eight and there was an episode of Hitchcock Presents as well. anyways, that's what this was with some goood fighting.

good episode. hope they have some more novelty episodes like this, but it also makes me excited to delve back into the story with the knowledge of where the show is capable and willing to go.

[9.7] Dust, gold and finally love
cjonesas5 July 2021
It takes a genius to make a genuinely amazing episode like the title.

All the series' episodes so far were superbly made, but this one tops all of them with amazing everything, being it the storyline, the acting, the western vibe & smooth flow and the so fitting score, all like a standalone Tarantino Rodriguez mini movie, gold and gray painted with streaks of martial arts prowesses.

You will love the good guys, you will also like the bad guys for so nicely having the crap beaten out of them in Kung Fu fashion, while shedding some tears for lost loved ones.

Gold and love are the main elements of this episode and that couldn't be shinier and more fitting. They are worth fighting for, even if it would be your last day in the Warrior world.

Maybe one of the best episodes of any show ever!

Warning: Spoilers
Uh... wow! Can we just have the whole series like this ep? I loved the many nods to the Western genre as a whole, as well as another iconic Bruce Lee homage moment.

The ensemble of characters, the bar fight, the riding into the sunset... amazing! Favourite episode of this show so far.

The Best Episode Yet
jablack-4214128 April 2021
Wow this show has been continuously good since the first episode I saw. But I didn't really know if I would call it must watch television. But then I watched this episode and oh wow. Watch it, watch it on the biggest screen you have. This episode was kind of a standalone but it does develop the main character and his friend some more(forgive me for not remembering their names I paused watching the show and just picked it back up recently. Anywho, the characters introduced in this episode are all given personality from the way they are dressed to how they talk to how they written. So much thought was put into this one episode and it truly shows. The action in this episode in my opinion is the best on the show yet, theres also quite a bit of it. You would think one man kicking a bunch of men with guns passes would feel unrealistic but like I said a lot of thought was put into it and they make it feel plausible, that takes a lot of talent. Also the main character has incredible screen presence, his line deliveries have been top notch this entire series, his friend finally gets some development, we learn how he feels out of place and he meets a girl he is truly interested in compared to other girls hes been shown to only want to have sex with before. The music in this episode was really good as well, fits the western theme. I just absolutely loved this episode, I am so glad I picked this back up. Don't let the slow beginning of this episode stop you, it's all a well thought out setup and hook for the rest. Btw I don't just hand out 10's, so definitely watch the show especially with the good news it was just picked up for a third season!

Brilliant, classic.

Love the spaghetti western vibe. The way the show breaks away from San Fran (see also Drucker's farm) while keeping the action, comedy and development flowing is perfect. While taking a break from San Fran, the story line and characters develop in ways they never could in SF. Weaving in clever comedy, you manage to crack a laugh while dodging the blood and punches you come to expect.

Blooper Reveal
colinrobinson-220649 June 2023
This episode was simply excellent. As said before, it was like a movie in the middle of a series. Yeah, it was Tarantino-ish, with homage to Bruce Lee. But it brought me back to Carradine's Kung Fu as well.

Kung Fu always featured the white cowboy coming into conflict with Carradine's Kwai Chang Caine. Caine, too, came to America searching for a sibling, his half-brother.

I guess Bruce thought that Kung Fu was great but needed more blood and death and a lot of guns.

Oh yeah... the blooper.

At the end Jun and Ah Sahm are shown riding off into the rising sun. Problem is, they were headed westward to Frisco. The morning sun would have been behind them, having risen in the east.

Excellent episode, combining the best of the series and a classic Western
grantss20 November 2023
Ah Sahm and Young Jun are in a stage coach trekking through Nevada. They're transporting the body of deceased relative back to Father Jun. Their travelling companions are a mixed bunch, most of whom aren't too fond of Chinese people. When they stop in a small town for the night they run into some trouble.

One of the best episodes in the series. This plays out more like a classic Western than a typical Warrior episode. It also reminds me of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, which is no small compliment. This mix makes for some excellent action and intrigue.

The fact that the episode is essentially standalone - it doesn't contribute to the series- or season-wide storyline - helps too as you can view it on its own merits without thinking about the broader story. It makes for a wonderful, temporary detour.

Even though this was a self-contained episode, the change of pace was appreciated.
LegendaryFang564 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was pretty much filler; it didn't advance the story at all. But there was something that must hold some significance and will be important in the next episode upon Young Jun and Ah Sahm's return. The gold. Father Jun wanted it, and there's no way it won't be important. The episode itself, though, this episode, wasn't all that important. But I don't care. And I never would've expected there to be an episode like this for a show like this.

There was some corny and cheesy dialogue, yes. And I'm sure there were plenty of clichés that I didn't catch, too; it sure felt like it. That being said, this episode was a change of pace that I appreciate, and it was self-contained, for the most part. I don't know whether it was completely self-contained; I'm thinking about the gold, but it will likely be important. Father Jun may be going to use it to greatly increase the Hop Wei's numbers for the imminent war between the tongs by recruiting a lot of people, in bulk, especially because some of the Hop Wei got arrested in the previous episode.

The cinematography in this episode was great. The opening shots of the scenery were beautiful. And so was the shot of the saloon, stable, and house at night with the moon in the background. And the final shot of the episode before Young Jun and Ah Sahm rode into the frame, and the same shot but with them riding off into the distance with the sun shining was great, too.

This was a good "vacation" for Young Jun. Even though he supposedly didn't like Nevada and that it led to a shootout, this was presumably the first time he's been anywhere else other than San Francisco. And he met a woman that he seemed to have fallen in love with. At the very least, it was different from all the other women he had sex with. There was more to it. It's as if a more intimate and emotional connection was created, something that was never there with other women. And even though the reason he was there with Ah Sahm was for Father Jun, I'm sure he appreciated being away from him for a little bit.

I'm not sure whether or not everyone or most people noticed, but there was a homage to Bruce Lee in this episode. In one of Bruce Lee's movies, Enter the Dragon, there's a scene where his character is fighting with another character whose actor looks like Chuck Norris, and the way it ends is by Bruce jumping up and then stomping down on the guy, breaking his back or neck. The way Bruce yells out after doing that is iconic. I haven't watched the movie - yet, but I've seen the scene in question. I believe the scene where Ah Sahm goes on top of the table and jumps down onto one of the guys is a homage to that scene in the movie. He yelled out just like Bruce did, too.

There were two other highlights in this episode. The first one being that Ah Sahm's secret of knowing how to speak English was revealed to Young Jun. Considering what Wang Chao said to him about how it's best to keep that to himself was shown in the "Previously on: Warrior" section, it may not be a good thing that Young Jun knows. Yes, their friendship has been strengthened with this episode, and Young Jun chose to stick around for Ah Sahm because he considers him to be his brother, but it's still concerning. Young Jun mentioned trust in the previous episode, and Ah Sahm already lied to him when he told him that the girl he came to San Francisco for is dead, which is the truth - technically, but a truth that was said ambiguously and can be interpreted as a lie if found out. Xiaojing (or Xiao Jing) is dead, but Mai Ling is alive and well. And he's going behind Young Jun's back by hooking up with Penelope, the Mayor's wife, too.

The other highlight is that Ah Sahm actually killed some people. That was somewhat sudden. I don't think he killed anyone in the previous episodes. I wonder if that's a change to his character and that he'll start doing it back in San Francisco when the conflict between the tongs starts to become more intense or if it was only because he was in a place where laws were practically non-existent. Over in San Francisco, there are actual consequences for that.

Lastly, there was one detail that I noticed. I think Young Jun brought those two pistols with him, or at least one of them. That's going to be important, surely. Over in San Francisco, the only weapons the tongs can get their hands on are knives, hatchets, and hammers. Having a gun is completely different, so there's no way that Young Jun having one or two will not be important.

Wow
greenmangreat29 February 2024
This episode is kinda cheesy if you think too hard about it, but god damn is it entertaining.

This episode evokes the nostalgia of old school action and drama: A protagonist meets a beautiful girl and immediately falls for her. Good, hardworking people just wanting to protect their livelihood. Standoffs and gunfights against bandits. These are all such common tropes, but this episode shows us why these tropes have been around for so long.

What a perfect blend of action, drama, and humour. If only all filler episodes out there could be like this!

I rarely ever get entertained by Westerns, but Warrior absolutely kills it in this episode.
