The lowest common denominator
pigjig27 February 2020
Sorry to say it, but this film's plot is incredibly weak, as well as too on the nose with the political commentary. The cinematography is great, as well as the lead's preformance. But Cuck feels more cartoonish in it's narrative then Joker, a movie literally derived from a comic book. I'd recommend watching this given time to burn, but it's in no way a "deep" film. If anything, I'd say that the screenwriters spent too much time trying to make the movie controversial, and not enough time trying to make this world feel real.

Not funny, not witty, not profound in it's observations, and kind of petty.
Arthurrs_Curse7 October 2019
Whoever said this movie was funny has a twisted sense of humor because this is one of the more depressing movies of 2019 I've seen. I enjoy dark comedies and would have preferred Cuck to be that, it is not.

I don't feel like this movie is as profound as it leads itself to believe as it was most likely written through the lens of someone who is an outsider to many of the ideologies they are trying to portray. Sometimes it comes off as petty with how bad the movie wants you to react to Ronnie's character and certain scenes feel more convenient to the narrative the film is trying to spin as opposed to plausible (a date Ronnie has in the film and a scene were Ronnie is washing a parking lot come to mind.)

That being said, this movie isn't completely terrible; the cinematography, performances, and soundtrack are all satisfactory. However, once you scratch beneath the surface this movie feels empty and it's themes are there for shock purposes. The formula of Cuck is very similar to films like Taxi Driver or Falling Down except with the obvious political twist, which they milk hard. I feel like the intention of this movie is to further divide people instead of trying to create civil discussion.

Over-played caricature of alt-right
spewy291676 October 2019
This film is a character study of an alt-right man that's a sexist, gun obessed incel that lives in his mother's basement. He takes life far too seriously and blames everyone else for his failures including left of center politics, women and especially immigrants and minorities.

This movie seems to want to ridicule people that are on the right, or at least trigger them, and vilify them as little better than psychopaths wound up by a ocean of online hatred. When dealing with this thorny subject it would be much better to attempt to analyse why the world has become so polarized, as to why these people blame so many others for their lack of social and economic mobility and how they are so bound up in a internet opinion echo chamber seige mentality of hate. Instead of finger point and laugh and condemn, it's far better to try to understand and discuss.

Even though the movie does not offer any real insights or understanding on a political or social level the acting and direction are all beyond satisfactory. Worth a watch and good for sparking discussion, but I'm not sure what this movie is really trying to achieve, so I feel it's somewhat exploitative. If there was a resolution in which the protagonist was able to come to a new outlook as American History X it would be a more deserving piece of cinema. I worry this work will harden divides instead of soften them.

Disgraceful
dougmacdonaldburr15 December 2019
I need to complain. Film makers need to learn this lesson once and for all. Making a really sad story is not the same thing as making a great story. This happens every year. A film comes out which is mediocre at best, but, the content is tragic enough that it gets showered with awards anyway. It could be a film about the Holocaust or slavery. That seems to be all you really need to do. Choose a dark topic and show lots of terrible things happening for two hours until the movie just sort of ends. This is not a good movie. It is actually the worst I have seen in years. Alt Right is in fashion right now. So they just created the most pathetic character they possibly could and occasionally made him say a few buzzwords like cuck or red pill. I won't give spoilers, but, you can basically figure out the entire plot from watching the trailer. I really resent anyone who thinks this is at all clever. This was extremely lazy story telling. It has no depth or substance. It is just empty trash. There is nothing to learn or think about. I can't really continue this review without getting angry. This is a terrible movie. If you want to watch it then that is on you. If you are looking for something similar that is actually good then watch American History X or The Believer. May god have mercy on their souls.

Cringey and unrealistic
The-Sovereign5 October 2019
This ridiculous movie is just some rabid leftist's own personal issues being projected on others. It's utter nonsense from a deeply troubled person living completely out of touch with reality.

Truly awful.
jackwgarratt6 October 2019
'Cuck' (2019) tries to illustrate a captivating story about a man's fall from grace into a lonely life, it instead illustrates a lack of directorial direction with its god awful set pieces and imagery. As well as a story that's synopsis is easy to understand, the actual story is nonsensical. I felt sick after just 30 minutes of the floating camera work! Rubbish!

A review from someone who actually saw it
ofumalow12 October 2019
I had mixed feelings about this film--it's well-made and has some important things on its mind, but also just tries to cram too many talking-points in, to the end result that the storytelling is only semi-plausible. It would have been better as a shorter film without quite SO many curveballs thrown the protagonist's way. He doesn't need to embody every characteristic that someone like him MIGHT have, or every obstacle he might experience.

But I was driven to review mostly by the ridiculous number of obvious trolls here voting the lowest they can while obviously not having seen the film. Are alt-right types so scared of unflattering fictional depictions that they need to pile on public forums like this just to frantically discourage other people from seeing those depictions? Well of course they are. How pathetic. I mean, at least you people might have done your homework and read a few reviews so you could more convincingly pretend to have actually seen "Cuck" and had some real basis for criticizing its content. But then, you folk aren't exactly renowned for being very bright. You're as obvious as Scientologists posing as indignant Average Joes to scream bloody murder at any Scientology expose. All you do is underline the film's depiction of alt-right incel types as whiny, paranoid mom's-basement dwellers who are obsessed with "masculinity" yet have the tantrum-prone emotions of 5-year-olds.

You know what actual grownups are self-confident enough NOT to do? "Review" films they haven't seen, because they're afraid others might see that film and learn it's a little too accurate a portrait.

Not really propaganda, not really worth watching.
drael645 October 2019
This is basically a b-movie made out of exaggerated impressions gained online, fever dreams and the writers psyche.

It's unfortunately not quite bad enough to be comedy, although some of it is funny. It does also provide some insight, although not so much into the subject material as to the nature of the writers; this film makes it clear what they fear, a sort of odd thing to fear, lonely men.

Anyway, not really worth watching, even for giggles

Certainly not as bad as some are making it out to be.
SteverB6 October 2019
I went into this one assuming that because of the title and the subject matter, it was going to be an indictment of the alt-right and incels, and random shooters, whoever else has been terrorizing society for many years. And let's be clear, it IS that, but more. This film is not leftist propaganda; it's a character study of one man in a subset of a subset of a subset of the alt-right. No, they're not all like this, but there are a few rare ones that are, and this film captures that, and captures it well.

I won't go after the other 1-star reviewers here who rated the film and then actually wrote a review of it without, obviously, having seen it. If they had seen it, they might not have left the ratings and reviews they have. That's my only quibble with them. We need to stop judging books by their covers (or movies by their synopsis and/or title), and maybe that's the message of this film. In a broader sense, living in this society now is exhausting. People are angry. People are fearful of those not like themselves. People are tired. That's all in this film too.

Yes, the Ronnie character IS over-the-top, and he's meant to be. The only thing, it seems, that people pay attention to these days, is the extreme of the extreme, and that's the point. I didn't expect it, but this movie's going to stay with me awhile. Give it a watch.

I suppose this movie can only worsen the situation of divededness within the US. But I don't really care. This movie is hilarious in its cringe. At least it's not boring. I only hope it wasn't indended to be taken dead seriously like some authors of the polarized reviews here did. Because if it was then... bruh.

Want to watch a sad, pathetic ignoramous dig himself further into a life hole? This is your movie. Nothing to learn from or garner here except a further disdain for the ignorant who can only life to feed their ego. Acting wasn't bad and the scenery fit the mood, but it's just got no dialogue or story to impress you in any way. Skip this one and save yourself 1:45 of head scratching idiocy.

Beyond Words
vengeance2030 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Saw this last night after hearing about it word a mouth.

The focuses on a 30 year old man named Ronnie. An outcast who is socially awkward & hates the left wing society the US has become. He preaches throughout several different scenarios of race, gender, sexuality & others issues through his YouTube Channel.

I found the film to be good, but weird. It's hard to say really as the film itself speaks a lot of truth on the issues of what Diversity has become since the turn of the 2010's. But the film portrays Right Wingers in a bad light. Right Wing people are entitled to opinions as much as the Left, but this film portrays both as bad, with Ronnie as the Right being the films focal point.

The however had some pretty bizarre & funny moments in it. Really funny moments. However, followed by sad moments too & throughout the film you feel sorry for Ronnie & what his life has become, especially near the end...

Overall 6/10

Warning: Spoilers
Seriously what the hell did the people behind this were thinking when they came up with this movie? It seems like to me they went fishing for trolls and plebs on 4chan /pol and selected some of the worst posts there and then they had a movie script. I f...ing had to stop 30 mins in when he was giving his mom a bath. That's f...ed up man, really. The director behind this movie must have a real messed up psyche to produce this garbage. I have to wonder what kind of person you have to be to praise this. A Disgusting one for sure. I feel I should be suing someone to make them pay for loosing 30 minutes of my life on this.

Kind of Hilarious, but Misses the Mark
Drboboosh26 October 2019
This Movie....

Overall, if you're just a normal person going about your life, you probably won't enjoy this movie. It's very dark, dreary, and depressing. Also, it does seem like the filmmakers took this movie seriously, which is unfortunate, because if they went straight for a black comedy, this would be a 10 star review, without question. And I know aspiring filmmakers are desperate for a 10 star review from an internet random like me.

The fun parts of this movie are that the main character is such an unlikable pathetic loser, that's it's comical to see him just get constantly humiliated and wrecked in the worst ways possible. I give the creators credit for levels at which Ronnie gets owned in this movie. It is very amusing.

The problem is, once you get past the amusement of seeing a ridiculous caricature of an "alt right" (whatever that is) troll getting humiliated (it is very funny at times), it's a pretty empty movie. Ronnie is such an over the top caricature that you can't really take him seriously. I don't doubt that there's people like him out there, but it does honestly seem like a Liberal Wet Dream of how they envision the typical Republican Voter.

That's why this movie has mostly 10 or 1 point reviews of people either saying it's hateful propaganda against White Men, or it's amazing commentary on how much Right Wingers suck!

Overall, it's kind of a hopeless movie. It's basically saying that there's these guys out there who are totally incompetent, angry, hateful, alone, and ready to snap. And that there's not much we can do about it. Which could be funny in a dark comedy, but is kind of depressing in this movie.

Not that terrible, not that good. Not really worthy of your time.
amir-bk6 October 2019
This movie is written from a point of view that tries to pass off as sympathetic but at its core this movie is a 'hate letter' to the 4\8chan and incel culture, this movie is not a character study, it claims to try to show how a sad lonely kid can get radicalized through exposure to far right rhetoric online but almost everything that happens in the movie is so outlandish that you really can't take it seriously.

Ultimately, this movie is written form a leftist perspective and it tries to color trump supporters as 'cucks', without a shred of self awareness about the whole ordeal, the movie takes itself very seriously.

But really, beyond the hamfisted politics it's not a terrible movie worthy of a 1 star review.

It's a downer, but an interesting topic
mrltulsa19 August 2020
Ronnie is extremely unattractive and unlikeable throughout the entire film. I felt he would try to take a turn or an improvement, but at the smallest misstep or bad news he would go off the rails.

I think it's an interesting case study about what goes on with many young males that have fallen through the cracks and never learned how to be a man. So they stay in this constant state of adolescence.

It's absolutely uncomfortable to watch, through the low budget production, the uncomfortable title character and a little bit of lazy storytelling.

Definitely not a date movie, but a story that definitely needs to be out.

I feel this film got downvoted heavily because of a lot of conservative bloggers got their feelings hurt by this film.

Nothing out the Extraordinary
Alan-Arrrr18 January 2020
The premise of this movie sounded interesting to me. I'm not really a political person but I enjoy watching movies where a character slowly loses their grip on reality and descends down a rabbit hole of madness, to me this movie fell short of delivering that feeling. It's pretty clear from the beginning of the movie that Ronnie is not a stable person and the ending of the film was rather predictable. The second act of the movie was unexpected in it's subject matter and while it has some fascinating moments it is ultimately depressing and you actually begin to feel sorry for Ronnie.

One big problem I think this movie suffers from is that it is very self-serious. The comedic moments that are in the film do not seem to come from a place of finding humor in tragedy, instead they seem to come from a place of intentional humiliation. The themes inside the movie also present themselves as very matter-of-fact. Black comedy can be good, but here it feels more vindictive than it does serving as a venue for humor in a certain situation.

Given the political context I can see why this movie is so polarizing. While making movies with a divisive subject can be risky, it can payoff if by the end the viewer leaves feeling like they learned something. I'm not very familiar with the alt-right but I didn't leave this movie thinking to myself, "wow! That was really an insightful look into the mindset of a group of people I don't understand." I kind of wish this film had dropped the political narrative entirely and just focused on further character development. Ronnie has a friend in the movie that kind of acts like a mentor but besides that he is rather one-dimensional and really just serves as a plot device. Ronnie's Dad passed away years ago and was in the army, that's about all we know about him--did Ronnie's father have a significant influence on his personality? Ronnie works at a convenience store and the owner's son basically acts as a plot device and another scenario for Ronnie to get upset about. The character Candy is somewhat fleshed-out but even still, her subplot is rather predictable and lacks tension.

Overall, this movie isn't unwatchable but it also didn't leave a significant impact on me. It was a very on-the-nose movie that felt like it was also patting itself on the back constantly. Like I mentioned in the beginning, you do begin to feel sorry for Ronnie by the end of the movie, however I do wonder if that was ever truly the filmmakers intentions?

My first review
lelinhobig5 October 2019
I have watched thousand of movies and rated hundreds, but never made a review. This a good movie - good story, good acting, good production values and cinematography, etc. I have enjoyed it. It is different, a well made story that have not seen before. This is what I look for in a good movie. Not another made by numbers 'blockbuster' with hollywood stars. The reason I have written this review is the rating of this movie. I have been duped by fake ratings and reviews into watching some bad movies. We all spevd money at cinema to watch well advertised and reviewed garbage. Rating of 2.5 for this movie is unjust. I can only guess it is because of politics. I am not saying that I admire the protagonist of the movie or condone his behaviour. I am saying that this a well made movie with original story.

Truly a Masterpiece
Cluckewallist20 February 2020
Hello and salutations,

I was altogether convinced that this movie would be pure and beautiful when I first heard its title. The title awoke incredibly joyful sensations in my heart and sent utterly magnificent signals to myself's brain.

I am a cuck. And to all the reviewers here that claim the alt-right does not exist, I deeply resent and take offense. We, in fact, do exist among the lands of Chad'nbruh. Everything in this movie so accurately depicts and represents our homeland and I relished every second of it. Truly a work of art, truly magnifique, avant garde, chef d'oeuvre, truly a gentleman and a scholar.

Thank You

not 1, but not a 10 either
szarteszemejjel4 November 2019
Dont get fooled by these extreme ratings, this movie is not a 10, but definetely not a 1 either. some people must have seen themselves in ronnie. i dont know which came first the chicken or the egg, if the 10s are just reaction to balance out the rating or they tried to overhype it, but either way, you should see this movie.

of course, ronnie character is an exaggeration, he has all the alt-right stereotypies (aggressive, gunlover, homophobic, racist, incel without friends and any social life), but this movie is not about shaming the alt-right. its about a fragile man, who needs help and makes a lot of bad choices in his life which is supported by extreme views.

Solid acting went unnoticed due to poor vision, subpar writing and focus on shock value
anthonyvvelardi22 December 2019
I was initially drawn in by the promise of a politically charged drama and even accepted the shock value pitch and intended emotional reaction to the threat of racist domestic terrorists. I quickly came to realize the poorly written one dimensional character stereotypes were only going to be eclipsed by the lack of vision and disappointing writing. I felt the actors attempted to salvage something out of this and did an admirable job with what they had, but in the end it was unmoving and the film's goal remained in the shadow of its mediocrity. This would have been redeemable if the story was allowed to develop organically and not focused on making a point that it ends up missing.

Important addition to the conversation
anthony-sherritt6 November 2019
This film takes an unflinching look into the psyche of a dispossessed young man searching for his place in life, searching for his identity. It dramatizes an important archetype in American culture that is sick. The story telling is compassionate to it's subjects, as revolting as they may be to most people. It's the denial of their humanity that's making them sick. Unapologetic, this film is important and a work of art.

A poor man's Taxi Driver for 2019
adamwinfield7 October 2019
Reading through the reviews here so far, we mostly have the 1-star rants that could have been written by Ronnie himself, and the 10-star reviews by the equally-pathetic 'woke' morons on the opposite political extreme. The filmmaker knew the title and subject matter itself would provoke this reaction, and for that alone I hope this cheap trick doesn't pay off.

As for the film itself, we have a modern-day poor man's imitation of Taxi Driver set in LA. The protagonist has none of the coolness of DeNiro's Bickle, and is instead made as pathetic as possible to caricature the most extreme MAGA buffoons. The character, worldbuilding and plot lack all subtlety - with more restrained writing and character-building this could have been a 7 or 8 star movie, but as it is it's too on the nose in its political message and Ronnie too thinly-developed for the movie to have a lasting impact.

It's a shame the filmmakers didn't have the skill and subtlety to pull this one off, because us kind-of-twisted loner white guys love movies about twisted loner white guys, and not too many get made.
