Maracatu
mounsieurlapao13 September 2021
This movie is a good sample about the Maracatu ritual that is very popular in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. The mix of this musical style with rock was the inspiration for one of the best bands in Brazil called Chico Science e Nação Zumbi (listen "Maracatu Atomico"). The movie is short and have a lot action. The best part is about a passage from the Bible where an accent can make a lot of difference in interpretation.

With a better script it would have been great

Beautiful cinematography and art direction, great sound and soundtrack, very interesting and important background of cultural clashes between traditional syncretic African-Brazilian Maracatu and bigoted charismatic Christianism. Unfortunately, the script is a little messy, does not connect very well all its parts and simply abandons some stories which it starts. The dream part (and ehat comes afterwards) is the most interesting and striking, but the film is not very engaging despite the aforementioned qualities. It could have been a fantastic movie.
