Exclusive: World-renowned actor and influential Hong Kong action filmmaker Donnie Yen is set to star in 87North and Universal Pictures’ Kung Fu, a feature adaptation of the classic ’70s TV series. Kelly McCormick, David Leitch, and Guy Danella will produce through 87North, with Leitch eyeing to direct.
Stephen Chin wrote the screenplay. Stephen L’Hereaux will also produce, and Ed Spielman, creator of the original Kung Fu television series, will executive produce.
The original ABC series starred David Carradine as a master martial artist who fled China after his master was murdered. He wandered the Old West helping the downtrodden and weathering rampant racism while eluding assassins trying to kill him. He was a peaceful man until provoked, which happened at least once an episode.
With his ground-breaking work on and off camera, Donnie Yen is among the exceedingly few actors of his generation to work at the highest levels...

The Action Scene is a column that explores the construction of action set pieces in order to deepen appreciation for and spark discussion about action cinema. The following column examines my fifteen favorite action scenes of 2023. In their variety, virtuosity, and visceral power, they embody the vibrancy of contemporary action cinema. Like last year’s roundup, the focus is on action scenes—relatively sustained, heightened, self-contained expressions of action filmmaking craft—so some otherwise strong action films didn’t make the cut, and not all of the films featured here are necessarily compelling beyond their set pieces. All included films made their official, non-festival, US theatrical and/or streaming debut in 2023. For the sake of variety, I’ve limited myself to one scene per film. And now, on to the action. As with previous years, these scenes have been grouped by theme to foreground patterns and enhance ease of perusal.

When it comes to big-budget productions made in Hong Kong, few could hold a candle to director Benny Chan whose resume includes such titles like “Rob-b-Hood”, “New Police Story” and “Raging Fire”, his last work before his death. As he was approached to do a remake of David R. Ellis' action-thriller “Cellular”, Chan did not have to think twice about the proposition since it gave him the chance to put the original premise within the Hong Kong culture, and therefore making his version much more than a mere copy as you might assume as first glance. “Connected”, which is currently streaming on Netflix, includes the ingredients typical for the kind of action thriller Chan is known for, as well as some impressive stunt work and great performances, especially leading man Louis Koo playing an unlikely hero.

The last wuxia film Yen starred in was “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” (2016), since, although he was in “New Kung Fu Cult Master Part One” (2022) it was only a cameo. Now he is back as the leading man, producer and director in “Sakra”, a wuxia epic which is adapted from Jin Yong's (Louis Cha) novel “Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils” which deals with the Eight Races of Buddhist deities of the Buddhist cosmology. Jacky Cheung has been absent from the silver screen for a while now, with his last leading role coming in 2016 with “Heaven in the Dark” and his last action film coming a year before that with “Helios”. On the other hand, if there's one thing the late, great Benny Chan's swansong “Raging Fire” did, it rekindled Nicholas Tse's interest in action films. Both Cheung and Tse are back with action and will be seen in Herman Yau's upcoming “Customs Frontline”.
Plot details are still under wraps but the trailer promises an exciting narrative revolving around illegal arms smuggling that promises fists, guns and lots of explosives.
The stacked star-cast also includes Francis Ng, Karena Lam and Cya Liu. No official release date has been announced yet but it can be expected to release in the 2nd half of 2023.

Last month’s Udine festival of all things East Asian was the launch pad for “Making Waves — Navigators of Hong Kong Cinema,” a collection of 13 films that will travel to a dozen cities in Europe and Asia. Billed as an “extravaganza,” mixing old and new talent, the event is pegged to the 25th anniversary celebrations of the return of Hong Kong to China after 150 years of British colonial rule.
But it is no longer clear to everyone that Hong Kong cinema has the energy, willpower or finance to face down its larger demons. Its problems range from the long-term drift of Hong Kong talent into the mainland Chinese industry to censorship and marginalization.
Last year began with Hong Kong cinemas under pressure from pro-Beijing media to change their releases, and raids on private screenings. These were followed by an amended law that introduces film censorship according to national security concerns...

Laura Ingraham attacked Jon Stewart on Monday night’s “The Angle,” calling him a “sneering prig” for his views on racial equality in the U.S. and accusing him of stacking his panel of guests to team up on author Andrew Sullivan.
“The only thing funny about Jon Stewart these days is how blissfully self-unaware he is,” she said.
Ingraham took issue with a recent segment on Stewart’s show “The Problem with Jon Stewart” titled, “The Problem With White People.” In it, Stewart and his panel spoke to Sullivan, who disagreed with the premise that all white people are responsible for systemic racism, and argued that America has “a great history.”
“By calling today a white supremacy, you are minimizing actual white supremacy,” Sullivan argued.
In response, one of Stewart’s panelists said she refused to argue “with another white man” and said “Every single white person upholds the...

Fremantle has sold out most major territories worldwide on the Martin Freeman-led BBC One smash hit “The Responder,” consolidating the acclaimed crime drama’s contention, even at this early stage, to become one of Europe’s top series of 2022.
Banner deals take in France (Canal Plus), Italy (Disney Plus), Germany’s (Magenta TV). Spain (Movistar Plus) and Russia & Cis (Viasat), all leading pay/SVOD operators.
The sales come as Fremantle, thanks to “The Responder,” “Cross Fire,” “Suspect” and “This Sceptred Isle” looks set to see an unprecedented four U.K. premium dramas finishing production in 2022. Led by “Fellow Travelers,” its English-language sales lineup for 2023 looks equally bullish.
In all, in 2022 Fremantle’s U.K. drama output will more than double compared to the previous year, said Jens Richter, at Fremantle’s global sales arm, Fremantle International, which he oversees as CEO.
That, however, is part of larger global surge.

Action thriller “Limbo” was named best film of 2021 at the annual Hong Kong Film Critics’ Society Awards. The film’s female lead, Chinese actress Cya Liu, was crowned best actress for her role as a young addict.
Results of five awards and 10 recommended films were decided on Jan. 16, 2022 after nine hours of deliberation and three rounds of votes. A total of 48 films released in 2021 met the entry criteria for the awards, which is in its 28th edition this year.
Critics said the Cantonese noir “Limbo,” based on the novel of the same name by mainland author Lei Mi, was an “extraordinary work.” It was directed by Soi Cheang.

Malaysian authorities have declined to approve the Chinese war movie “The Battle at Lake Changjin” for theatrical release after outrage emerged online that the film promotes Communism, which is banned in the country.
The film’s local distributor Mega Film Distribution said in a statement that it is considering submitting the title again for reconsideration by the Malaysian Film Censorship Board (Lpf), and expressed its regrets that the film which has grossed $890 million so far in China had not been green lit for its Nov. 18 release.
It denied that the film promotes communism, stating, according to local reports, that such accusations were “unfair [to] those who want to watch it.”
“We believe the audience can use this film to trace how the Chinese volunteer army fought in the extreme cold and harsh environment,” it said.

Just after China’s long National Day holiday on Oct. 10, Chinese social media was plastered in red-and-gold memes and posts celebrating the annual box office to date hitting the $6.26 billion (RMB40 billion) mark. The tone was jubilant, celebrating the market’s triumph over the pandemic on the back of patriotic hit “The Battle at Lake Changjin.”
What wasn’t trumpeted, however, was that the milestone was achieved a full 62 days later than it was in 2019, and a good 66 days later than in 2018. Currently, it’s possible that China’s annual box office may not even hit the RMB55.8 billion ($8.73 billion) mark attained in 2017.
That may come as a surprise to those who have read headlines about the country setting box office records across five different holidays so far this year — New Year’s Day, February’s Lunar New Year, Valentine’s Day, Tomb Sweeping Festival and the May 1 Labor Day holiday.

‘Tick, Tick…Boom!’ and foreign-language titles ‘Wesele’ and ‘Kurup’ are also new.
Holdovers from the major studios look set to dominate the UK-Ireland box office this weekend, with Chloe Zhao’s Marvel epic Eternals aiming to build upon its debut last week, where it made £5.5m from 642 locations.
Universal’s No Time To Die has enjoyed six weekends in the top two with its total standing at £89.9m. Matching Spectre’s £95.2m is still possible, but Skyfall’s £103.2m now seems out of reach. Another strong contender for the top five is Warner Bros’ Dune, which took £1.6m in its...

(Welcome to Pop Culture Imports, a column that compiles the best foreign movies and TV streaming right now.)
It's time for another edition of Pop Culture Imports, and we're getting in right under the wire before Halloween. As such, I have a few spooky foreign-language offerings for you, though a few non-horror titles made their way through the cracks (mostly because the Hong Kong action awesomeness of "Raging Fire" could not be tamed). So let's settle back with some candy and some cozy socks, and fire up those subtitles.

Tamron Hall’s new murder mystery is pure fiction, but it’s built out of many of the elements of her real life.
In “As the Wicked Watch,” TV reporter Jordan Manning works to track down the killer of a young Black teenager, and in doing so, takes readers on an investigation that examines not only crime, but cultural perceptions about race, gender and class. Hall’s journey from Texas TV reporter to national talk-show host and journalist is mirrored in Manning’s own story arc. Pieces of plot is based on two murders Hall covered when she was starting out in Texas, and Manning shares many of the journalist’s fashion choices, including her love of stilettos.
“There are obviously certain character traits that relate to me and that viewers will recognize as part of my voice, and then there are parts of the character that in some ways I’m envious of,...

"True action greatness!" Hi-Yah! has released one more official trailer for the "brutally entertaining" Hong Kong action film Raging Fire, which was already released in cinemas in the US a few months back. We've already posted a few trailers for this previously, but with a streaming release on the martial arts channel Hi-Yah! in October, they've dropped off another explosive trailer to enjoy. Donnie Yen stars as Shan, a highly respected hardline cop with a long history of success on dangerous cases. However, his past unexpectedly comes back to haunt him when a sting operation is attacked by a mysterious group of criminals led by Ngo, his former protégé, a talented former officer who had once respected and admired Shan but ended up in prison. Co-starring Nicholas Tse as Ngo, with Jeana Ho, Ray Lui, Patrick Tam, Ben Lam, Deep Ng, and Kang Yu. This honestly might be the best...

China’s box office slowed to one of its lowest points of the year this week, bringing in a total of just $24.6 million over the three-day weekend, the last before the break-out of patriotic National Day holiday blockbusters arriving Sept. 30, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
That leaves China’s $5.3 billion year-to-date box office an enormous 27% lower than the $7.3 billion box office accrued by the same point in 2019.
Any competitive title releasing this past weekend would have seen its box office cannibalized by “The Battle at Changjin Lake” and “My Country, My Parents,” major government-promoted films debuting hit Thursday that will be guaranteed strong sales due to their political nature in a particularly politically symbolic year (the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Communist Party).

The 27th edition of the L'Etrange Festival came to a close last weekend in Paris, France. For twelve days more than twenty-two thousand attendees took in a diverse program made up of feature length and short films. With safety measures in place the festival carried on without a hitch. Guests included Fabrice du Welz and Rob Jabbaz. The cherry on top was of course the attendance of Donnie Yen at the screening of Raging Fire, at the close of the festival. Eskil Vogt's The Innocents took home the coveted Canal+ Grand Prize, which means that the film will be acquired by the French premium pay channel for a future broadcasst. Following a dismal summer, China’s box office over this year’s three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday hit its lowest point since 2014.
Chinese citizens had to work on Saturday, Sept. 18, but enjoyed a three-day vacation for the holiday from Sept. 19-21. Cinemas are operational, but at reduced capacity due to the pandemic.
The cumulative box office for the period this year was only $73 million (RMB472 million), according to Alibaba’s Beacon film data platform. That would make it the lowest earning Mid-Autumn Festival since 2014, when theaters brought in what would convert today to $54 million (RMB350 million), despite the country having nearly 70% fewer screens at the time, according to the China Daily and historic data on screen count.
China’s Mid-Autumn Festival earnings were unusually high in 2017 and 2020 since the holiday coincided with the blockbuster National Day holiday period (Oct. 1) and thus are not directly comparable.

“Free Guy” has retained enough charm to stay at second in China in its fourth weekend in theaters, but it slid in just a mere hair ahead of Chinese titles setting themselves up for box office success over the current Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.
The 20th Century Studios film starring Ryan Reynolds grossed $4.8 million in the three days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, bringing its China cumulative so far up to $85.1 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Surpassing “Free Guy” to score first this weekend was new release “Cloudy Mountain” from China Film Co. The effects-heavy disaster film grossed $19.1 million over its three-day opening. One thing about the origins of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that’s easy to forget these days is that much of the Avengers stuff was inspired by the Ultimate Marvel comics, specifically The Ultimates. This especially went for Hawkeye, who had little to do with his mainstream comic self and far more with Ultimate Hawkeye. His uniform, Shield black ops status, and even his family were taken from the Ultimate Marvel comics. Not only that, but the way he became a hopeless mass murderer after the deaths of his wife and kids (far more permanent in the comics) was lifted from the books.
So it’s a bit weird to see them suddenly shift to his mainstream comic self. Up to Avengers: Endgame, the only specific bit of Hawkeye taken from the regular comic continuity is that he started dressing as Ronin for a time. Now he’s starring in...

“Free Guy” retained its lead of the China box office for the third weekend in a row, and has now surpassed “Tenet” in local sales.
It brought in $12.4 million on a rare weekend with three non-Chinese language titles in the top five, according to Maoyan figures.
China’s box office has been dismal all summer and the slump continued this week with, once again, only five films that made over $1 million. “Free Guy” held on strongly to grab a second weekend at the top of the mainland China box office. It beat an unusual theatrical release for “The Tomorrow War,” which has gone straight to streaming in other territories.
“Free Guy” earned $18.3 million between Friday and Sunday, according to data from consultancy, Artisan Gateway. That was only a 23% drop from its opening weekend performance, when it grossed $23.8 million.
Over ten days, it has accumulated $56.6 million. That already makes “Free Guy” the fourth biggest U.S. film of the year in China behind “F9,” “Godzilla Vs. Kong” and the rereleased “Avatar” which it will soon overtake.
Chinese authorities appear to have ended the annual summer blackout period when only Chinese-language titles are allowed fresh releases. “Free Guy” was given little advanced notice that its release could go ahead, but it caught on quickly.
