British TV shows fetched a record £1.85B ($2.25B) in 2022-23, new stats reveal.
Sales to streamers boomed and finished tape deals came back into fashion to help exports grow 22% year-on-year, Pact’s UK TV Exports Report revealed.
Demand for shows such as The Ipcress Files, Frozen Planet II and This England built even as the international TV business faced a brutal economy, a battered TV ad market and major buyers withholding spend. Half of respondents said their business was impacted by the period of austerity and cost management at large U.S. companies.
For the first time, over half of programmes (53%) were sold to international streaming and VoD platforms, up from 39% last year. This could be connected to the growth in finished program sales, with streamers more likely to license as they pulled away from costlier original content spend.

The TV academy has honored the work of voice actors nearly every year since 1992 and has bestowed separate Emmys for Best Narrator and Best Voice-Over Performance annually since 2014. Included among those recognized in the former category this year are a three-time champion, a pair of returning nominees and two newcomers (one of whom is a Grammy-winning former U.S. president).
Historian David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) is seeking his fourth Emmy victory against challengers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (“Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War”), W. He already bested Abdul-Jabbar and Nyong’o in 2020, but can he do it again, especially with a heavy hitter like Obama in the mix? The Primetime Emmys take place on September 20 and air live coast-to-coast on ABC. But the majority of awards are handed out at the five Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies that take place in the week leading up to TV’s biggest night. The Creative Arts trophies will be awarded at five events on: September 14 (reality and nonfiction; Sept. 15 (variety); Sept. 16; Sept. 17 and Sept. 19 (mix). The first four of these will stream live on Emmys.com while the last will air on Fxx.
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forced TV productions, film shoots and entertainment events to shut down all year to slow the spread of the easily transmitted disease, all of this year’s Emmy ceremonies will be held virtually. While Jimmy Kimmel emcees just one show — the Emmys next Sunday — Best Reality Host nominee Nicole Byer (“Nailed It”) has been tapped to preside over all five of the Creative Arts awards.

Not even the Covid-19 pandemic could stop Shark Week. The annual Discovery Channel franchise, now in its 32nd edition, remains a juggernaut for the company — which this year is using Shark Week to launch five new series while giving the network (and cable in general) a needed boost.

It’s with no disrespect to any of this year’s other Emmy-nominated cinematographers that I say no one else went as far to capture their footage than Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, who are nominated for Best Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program for lensing the CNN documentary “Apollo 11.” They literally went to the moon and back. Can the legendary astronauts, who are 90-years-old and 89-years-old, respectively, be rewarded in 2020 for their historic footage?
“Apollo 11” revisited the events surrounding the title mission on the 50th anniversary of the human race’s first ever moon landing. National Geographic’s “Life Below Zero” calls for director of photography Michael Cheeseman to always have a camera ready as he follows the cast and their struggles to live off the grid in remote Alaska.
Cheeseman is one of many cinematographers who work in the unpredictable world of nature. Others include “Deadliest Catch’s” David Reichert and “Serengeti’s” Richard Jones. Whether using a drone or a GoPro, these artisans are used to filming in extreme conditions and have learned to become resourceful when taking care of their gear miles from production houses.
Cheeseman, for example, often finds himself in subzero temperatures using equipment not built for such brutal weather.
“I’ll use my iPhone a lot for the GoPro, and it can die within 10 seconds. I have to put it right back in my jacket. The camera batteries can die too,” he says.

The interrelationships between animals and people are tightly wound, and they’re on full display in the Discovery documentary series “Serengeti.” The series, directed by John Downer, tells the story of a group of different animals living in the astonishing African region, and how they not only navigate their need to survive but manage raising children and finding love. Narrated by Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong’o, “Serengeti” sets out to tell a different kind of nature documentary in nearly every way, from the animals at the focus of the series — to how the story is told.
Downer has been filming animals for 35 years and the Serengeti gave him the opportunity to put his camera on a wide cross-section of life. “There’s nowhere else on Earth where you get such a concentration of incredible animals,” from baboons — animals that, Downer jokes, are aware of how unpopular they are — to cheetahs and lions.

The Television Academy is putting a halt to Emmy For Your Consideration events as concerns continue to grow over the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
The Academy had already offered networks and studios the option of throwing Fyc events without a live audience/membership attendance, but in the immediate future that will now be the only option. The decision to stop in-person events is effective through the end of Fyc season — June 14, 2020. The ruling likely puts a halt to pop-up event spaces like Netflix’s “FYSee” installation and Amazon Prime Video’s usual event space at the Hollywood Athletic Club as well.
“Should the virus be contained, we will contemplate a truncated Fyc event season with an audience in hopes that we can accommodate partners impacted by early cancellations,” the org said in an email to networks and studios. “Those potential plans will be rolled out as we are able to confirm next steps.

[Updated to reflect Netflix cancellation.]
As concern grows over coronavirus (Covid-19), the Television Academy has stopped the practice of talent and other panel participants from interacting with audience members during For Your Consideration events. Meanwhile, Netflix announced late Friday that it had canceled its first Emmy Fyc panel of the season, for “Lost in Space.”
In a note sent to members, the Television Academy said Netflix had opted not to move forward with this Sunday’s event for “Lost in Space,” and that “the decision was made out of an abundance of caution for members, talent, partners, and employees. We are exploring options for a future panel/event and will provide details as available.”
As for the ban on interactions at Fyc events, it includes autographs, selfies, meet-and-greets and questions from the audience, the org told members in a note sent out on Friday.

The Television Academy is pondering Emmy Awards campaign contingency plans in the event that concern over the spread of coronavirus escalates.
For now, For Your Consideration events are taking place without incident. But in an email sent to network and studio partners on Wednesday night, the org said it is “exploring options for the Fyc season should the situation worsen, such as live-streaming and/or taped-only panels with no audience.”
In the note, the Academy asked members to comment on whether such alternatives to in-person gatherings “is something you might be interested in. … Additionally, these events could be affected by recommendations and/or protocols provided by the Centers for Disease Control (Cdc) and the L.A. Department of Health.”
Variety reached out to several network and studio execs tasked with handling Fyc events, and so far those contacted said they’re monitoring the situation — but haven’t yet altered their Fyc plans.

“1917” and “Ford v Ferrari” split the top sound editing prizes Sunday night at the 67th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. “1917” took Dialogue/Adr and “Ford v Ferrari” scored for Effects/Foley. The Elton John musical fantasy, “Rocketman,” earned Musical honors and “Jojo Rabbit” topped Music Underscore.
The other Feature awards went to “Parasite” (Foreign Language), “Toy Story 4” (Animation), and “Echo in the Canyon” (Documentary).
This sets up a competitive sound editing Oscar race between Sam Mendes’ innovative, continuous-shot World War I drama and James Mangold’s thrilling race car biopic. “The absence of visible edits meant it would have been easy to be overwhelmed with sound at times, never being able to cut to a different location to reset,” said Oliver Tarney, supervising sound editor of “1917.” “We worked hard at making sure there were always multiple layers of detail in the work we were doing.

The great pride on Discovery Channel’s “Serengeti” is not so great at forgiveness.
On Sunday, Kali tests the waters (ironically in the grassland region of northern Tanzania) as to whether or not she and her cubs will be let back in to the group, despite that big scarlet “A” permanently shaved into her fur. Yeah, she had cubs outside of the pride, a real no-no in the lion community.
Much like their plains-mates the elephants, lions apparently never forget, and Kali and her kids are not welcome back. At least, not for now.

Discovery's Serengeti has roared out of the gate in the ratings.
The Aug. 4 premiere of the Simon Fuller-produced series pulled in the best rating (1.2, including three days of delayed viewing) among Discovery's core demographic of adults 25-54 for any nature documentary on Nielsen-measured TV in six years. The last nature doc to reach that mark was another Discovery show, North America.
Sunday's airing racked up 3 million viewers after three days, up from 2.35 million for its initial airing (it was also simulcast on Animal Planet, Science Channel and Discovery en Español). That ...

John Downer, the director of Discovery's new nature documentary Serengeti, says there are lessons to take from the animal world.
They say editing is the soul of cinema. Rarely has that been more apt than in Discovery’s upcoming nature documentary Serengeti.
Serengeti, produced by American Idol’s Simon Fuller, directed by John Downer, and narrated by Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, is a little bit different than your traditional nature doc. Nature, and particularly the Serengeti region of Africa in which Serengeti is set, is an inherently fascinating place. Hundreds of species of animals live together in a vibrant ecosystem in a desert habitat. One thing the Serengeti doesn’t necessarily have, however, is a storyline. Putting natural life in a classic three-act structure is solely the domain of humanity. So that’s exactly what the humans do in Serengeti.

If you were captivated by the recent hyper-visual CG-laden The Lion King, then the Discovery Channel’s upcoming Serengeti will make your jaw hit the floor — because it is real life. With the series premiering August 4, it’s close to the release of the new iteration of the Disney film and creator and producer Simon Fuller and director and producer John Downer admitted that it was just a coincidence.
“We certainly weren’t planning it,” said Downer of the release dates of Serengeti and The Lion King. He said he hasn’t seen the movie yet, but he said he did see the trailer and realized that it looked like their series.
“There is a convergence there,” added Downer. “The Lion King is going for photo-realism. We’re going for realism…we are trying to do something different.”
