Meet The Space Program, the Producing Collective Behind Buzzy Cannes Film ‘The Plague’: ‘For Indie Movies, It’s Not One Size Fits All’
Image
The Space Program, a New York-based team of indie producers, describes itself as a collective. The way things work is that the three-person team collaborates on all projects — with one person taking lead and the others assuming supporting roles, depending on the film.

“We have been able to become a safety net for each other and for the films and the filmmakers,” explained Gus Deardoff, who runs the company along with Lizzie Shapiro and Lexi Tannenholtz. “It means there’s always someone available, which helps because filmmakers really need instantaneous contact with their producers at all times, and sometimes you get spread very thin. This way, we have several lines of defense.”

The company, which has worked on the feature debuts of Boots Riley (“Sorry to Bother You”) and Emma Seligman (“Shiva Baby”), takes a particular interest in first-time filmmakers.

“We love working with people that we want to be able to grow with,...

Charly Clive and Ellen Robertson Sign With WME (Exclusive)
Image
Charly Clive and Ellen Robertson have signed with WME for representation in all areas, Variety has learned exclusively. The pair continue to be represented by United Agents in the UK and Linden Entertainment.

Clive and Robertson broke out with their performances as the “Britney” sketch comedy duo. They previously adapted “Britney” into a BBC Three pilot in 2023. “Britney” originated as a comedy stage show that Clive co-wrote about her experience of being diagnosed with a brain tumor at 23 years old.

Their most recent live show, “Friends and Nothing More,” had a sold-out run at the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe Festival before transferring to London’s Soho Theatre. Currently, they are writing a half-hour comedy that they are developing with Gloria Sanchez and Two Brothers. Both Clive and Robertson would also star in and executive produce that project.

Clive was recently cast in Bill Lawrence’s college comedy series at HBO, in which...

12 Years Later, I Still Can’t Understand How Hajime Isayama Let Wit and Mappa Get Away With Those Absurd Attack on Titan Animations
Image
Once the Survey Corps unraveled the secret of the basement, the story of Attack on Titan underwent a complete shift in tonality. Things became more grim, dark, and apocalyptic. Looking back, that feeling of doom was present since the first chapter itself. After all, every fight between humans and Titans led to numerous deaths. There was hardly anything to be hopeful about.

That’s why I wonder what it was that made the earlier seasons of Attack on Titan lighter. While there could be many significant reasons behind it, I am sure the Titans had a role to play in it. To be specific, it’s their appearance and movements.

“How I Met Your Mother” Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
Since its premiere, How I Met Your Mother has become an iconic TV sensation. The series aired for nine seasons starting in 2005 and ending in 2014 while Ted Mosby told his children the long story of meeting their mother. The show portrayed five friends’ experiences in Manhattan while they dealt with adulthood, careers, and relationships in their lives.

Himym established its success through its different storytelling features as well as its humor combined with the undeniable bond among the lead characters. The show designed its plot structure in a non-linear way. Its memorable dialogue and brainchild concepts, such as “Bro Code”, lived on as pop culture references after the series.

However, fans of the show wonder about the fates of the original show members who portrayed these TV characters years after the series finale aired.

Image
Göteborg’s prime Nordic Film Market where last year’s Cannes sensations “The Girl with the Needle,” “Armand” and “When the Light Breaks” were first showcased as works in progress, has announced exclusively to Variety its full 2025 program.

As always, several acclaimed-directors will share the spotlight with promising newcomers, as reflected in the centre-piece 15-title Works in Progress lineup.

Five years after his Cannes selection with “Godland,” Iceland’s festival darling Hlynur Pálmason makes a comeback with “The Love that Remains,” a vignette-driven family drama toplining Sverrir Guðnason and Saga Garðarsdóttir (“Balls”).

A Cannes Directors’ Fortnight habitué, Afghan-born Shahrbanoo Sadat (“The Orphanage”) will bring “No Good Men,” her first romcom, set inside a Kabul newsroom in 2021 pre-Taliban ruled-Afghanistan.

Mufasa: The Lion King Box Office (North America): Weekend Actuals Came In Higher, Still Not Enough To Beat Sonic 3!
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King Box Office (North America): Weekend Actuals Update (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Mufasa: The Lion King can cheer up a little as the weekend actual numbers suggest it is slightly higher than the reported debut weekend collection. The film is expected to underperform at the box office, and all eyes are on the Christmas boost this week. However, it will still not be enough to compete against Sonic the Hedgehog 3 based on the strong opening it had in the US. Scroll below for more.

Although the movie emerged at the top in China, its worldwide collection came lower than the projection worldwide. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is toppling it, and as critics have noted, the Disney sequel/prequel lacks the magic created by the 2019 movie.

According to the report by Luiz Fernando Mufasa, The Lion King earned higher than the previously reported numbers. It collected...

Nutcrackers Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play In Ben Stiller's Christmas Movie
Image
Warning! This post contains spoilers for Nutcrackers.

Ben Stiller's brand-new Christmas comedy, Nutcrackers, is officially streaming on Hulu, and these songs play throughout the movie. Nutcrackers centers on Michael (Ben Stiller), a commercial real estate agent living in Chicago who must leave his professional life behind to go tend to his four orphaned nephews in rural Ohio. In addition to Stiller, Nutcrackers' cast of characters includes Linda Cardellini as social worker Gretchen Rice and real-life brothers Homer, Ulysses, Atlas, and Arlo Janson as the Kicklighter boys.

Surprisingly, despite being one of several new Christmas movies released in 2024, Nutcrackers' soundtrack does not feature traditional holiday songs. Instead, Nutcrackers includes a number of instrumentals from the movie's original score, composed by Aaron M. Olson, and features a host of songs not often associated with Christmas. Here's every song used in Nutcrackers and when it appears in the movie.

Alicia Vikander, Soon to Be Seen in ‘The Last Day’ and ‘Hope,’ Talks Motherhood and Work: ‘I Need to Do Both’
Image
Alicia Vikander opened up about her family life at the Zurich Film Festival, where she received the Golden Eye Award.

“Sometimes, [preparing for a role] is boring and tedious. My three-year-old is wondering what’s going on, because I’m locking the doors and talking to myself,” she laughed.

“When I am done, I get very tired. Acting is physically and emotionally draining. I have two young children now, I was pregnant when making that film and that’s where most of my time goes when I am not working,” said the Swedish actor, fresh off dystopian sci-fi “The Assessment.”

Vikander’s growing multilingual family – the actor is married to Michael Fassbender – aroused festival audience’s curiosity.

“My six-month-old doesn’t speak much, but my three-year-old speaks Portuguese, English and Swedish. Recently, he was hanging out with some kids and now there’s also a bit of Spanish. He’s giving me language courses now!

Naruto: Every Movie Ranked
Image
Naruto is one of the biggest and most beloved Shnen franchises ever made. Created by Masashi Kishimoto, the series debuted in Weekly Shnen Jump in 1999 and quickly became a hit with readers. Studio Pierrot launched its anime adaptation in 2002, making the franchise even more popular. Like many beloved anime series, Naruto has also jumped to the silver screen, spawning eleven movies over its lifetime.

One of the most fascinating things about the Naruto movies is their variety. While some films are standard shnen action pieces, others drop the characters into strange situations or new genres, and other movies are crucial to understanding the franchise's overarching plot. But which of these films is the best, and which can be skipped?

‘Svu’ in NYC: Breaking Down the Locations From the ‘Law & Order’ Favorite
Image
One of the many joys in watching Law & Order: Svu is trying to spot hometown New York City locations seen in the long-running series. Stars have played countless scenes throughout NYC, from Olivia Benson’s home borough of Manhattan to Elliot Stabler’s turf in Queens, where his family once lived. Ada Sonny Carisi is from Staten Island, and new team member Terry Bruno came from the Bronx Svu. Many cases have also involved places in Brooklyn. Residents and visitors to New York frequently stumble upon the cast and crew filming on the city’s mean streets, and there’s always a chance of glimpsing Captain Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and her crew doing what they do best: solving crimes and protecting victims. Below, we highlight just a few of the real (and fictional) locations the hit procedural has used over the past 25 years. Benson’s Apartment (203 W. 89th St.

Val-Zod's Superman Has Mastered the "Sun-Dipping" Power-Up Clark Kent Is Too Afraid to Use
Image
Val-Zod uses sun-dipping for solitude and enhanced powers, unlike Clark Kent who avoids it. The story "Pure Blackness" from DC Power 2024 #1 showcases Val-Zod's unique perspective as a pacifist Superman succeeding Clark Kent. Val-Zod's story portrays a different take on sun-dipping, highlighting his use of power upgrades for personal solitude.

Although Superman Clark Kent avoids the power upgrade that comes from sun-dipping, his multiverse counterpart, Val-Zod, has no problem using it. The Superman of Earth-Two shares some of his Prime Earth version's noblest qualities, while standing out as a unique take on the Man of Steel.

Superman's reliance on yellow sun energy to gain his powers is a well-known aspect of his lore. While Clark Kent avoids direct contact with the sun for upgrades, the story "Pure Blackness" by John Ridley and Edwin Galmon from DC Power 2024 #1 shows that Val-Zod learned to master sun-dipping long ago.

Where the Man of Steel...

‘Wonka’ Review: Timothee Chalamet Charms as the Quirky Chocolatier
Image
Calah Lane as Noodle and TIMOTHÉE Chalamet as Willy Wonka in ‘Wonka (Photo © 2023 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc)

The joyous strains of “Pure Imagination” lead into an equally joyous celebration of life – and chocolate – in Warner Bros Pictures’ Wonka. Movie fans could have had a one-two Timothée Chalamet punch if Dune 2 hadn’t been pulled from the theatrical release calendar. But for now, Chalamaniacs will have to settle for seeing the ever-charming actor light up the screen in the prequel to 1971’s Willa Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.

Chalamet is no Gene Wilder, but then again, no one can fill Wilder’s shoes. Not even Johnny Depp came close in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Still, comparisons aside, Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name) proved to be an excellent choice to play the overly optimistic chocolatier with huge dreams and an even bigger heart.

The film opens...

Timothée Chalamet's Wonka Song Is Proves He Can Handle The Iconic Role
Image
Timothée Chalamet's performance in Wonka includes musical elements, with the latest trailer revealing his singing skills and evoking optimism about his portrayal. Chalamet's rendition of "Pure Imagination" in the trailer captures the magic and nuance of Gene Wilder's original performance, suggesting a similar quality and highlighting his ability to bridge music and acting effectively. The inclusion of musical performances in Wonka, along with Chalamet's portrayal matching the eccentricity of the character, could make it the best interpretation of the story yet, offering a fresh take on Wonka's early years as an inventor while maintaining the nostalgia of the original movie.

Timothée Chalamet's performance as the titular character in Wonka includes musical elements, with the first tease of his talents supporting his ability to handle the role. Roald Dahl's iconic candy-maker character first appeared onscreen in Mel Stuart's 1971 adaptation Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Unlike this...

Timothée Chalamet Finally Sings Iconic Gene Wilder Song In New Wonka Trailer
Image
Timothée Chalamet sings "Pure Imagination" in the new Wonka trailer, reminiscent of Gene Wilder's iconic performance as Willy Wonka. Early comparisons between Chalamet's portrayal and the original film have been sparked by glimpses of the upcoming musical fantasy. Chalamet's singing voice has so far been kept tightly under wraps.

Wonka star Timothée Chalamet sings a song from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in the newest trailer for the prequel movie. Chalamet plays the eponymous Willy Wonka in the upcoming musical fantasy film directed by Paul King. Early looks at the film, and Chalamet's performance in particular, have inevitably drawn comparisons to the original 1971 movie and to Gene Wilder's iconic performance as the eccentric chocolatier.

A new Wonka teaser trailer now shows Chalamet singing "Pure Imagination," which Wilder famously sang in one of the most memorable scenes in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Check out the teaser below:...

Timothée Chalamet Sings in ‘SNL’ Monologue to Celebrate the Strike Ending and the Return of ‘Shameless Self-Promotion’
Image
“Saturday Night Live” host Timothée Chalamet took full advantage of his ability to promote his latest movie, the upcoming movie musical, “Wonka,” following the conclusion of the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike, which had prohibited actors from promoting any work for the studios. In his opening monologue, after first joking that during the strike, all he could talk about was his perfume commercial directed by Martin Scorsese — “when you get that call that Martin Scorsese wants to direct you, the first think you think is, ‘Man, I really hope it’s a perfume commercial’” — Chalamet then broke into song to sing about the strike the tune of “Pure Imagination.

“Come with me, and you’ll be in a world of shameless self-promotion — it’s Ok, I can say…” the actor crooned, before immediately turning to the camera to plug “Wonka’s” premiere on Dec. 15, and playing up his costar Hugh Grant’s “Oompa Loompa dump truck.

Image
Alicia Vikander has received much love and the President’s Award for lifetime achievement at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival during its 57th edition, which opened on Friday.

The Oscar winner got a very warm reception from attendees of the opening ceremony, charming the audience by mentioning that her film A Royal Affair had shot in the Czech Republic, that she had enjoyed her time in the country and that it had been “pivotal” for her career. Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand, starring Vikander as Queen Catherine Parr, the final wife of Henry VIII, who’s played by Jude Law, then kicked off this year’s fest.

In a wide-ranging roundtable conversation with The Hollywood Reporter and other media representatives, Vikander shared how she decides which roles to take on and why learning lines is so important for her. Alicia Vikander on Henry VIII Film ‘Firebrand’ and Being a “Huge Jason Bourne Fan”
Image
During a wide-ranging conversation for THR‘s Awards Chatter podcast at the Campari Lounge at the Cannes Film Festival, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander went through her career from her upbringing in Sweden and background in ballet to her Oscar-winning role in The Danish Girl and her latest film Firebrand, which will screen in competition at the festival.

Vikander’s big break in her native Sweden came with 2010’s Pure. She then turned heads in the 2012 Danish film A Royal Affair, co-starring with Mads Mikkelsen, but it was her role in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina that gained her notoriety in the U.S. “Everything that needs to be there, is there and nothing else. A lot of it you had to understand by reading the action and understanding what is happening in the scene emotionally,” she said of the Garland- written screenplay. For the self-tape audition for the film, she...

10 Best Attack On Titan Characters, Ranked

Attack on Titan is among the most celebrated anime of recent memory. Unlike many of its predecessors, the story focuses on nuance between heroes and villains, with the lines between them becoming increasingly unclear throughout the narrative.

Many compelling characters have made a name for themselves, thriving from the ambiguity of Paradis' struggles and becoming favorites among the story's dedicated fanbase. Regardless of popularity, the anime would not be the same without their outstanding influence and memorable actions.

Attack On Titan Yeagerists List
Image
The Yeagerists were a group of Eldian nationalists in Attack On Titan. Inspired by the examples of characters like Eren and Floch, they rallied behind them and served as their military before and during the events of the Rumbling. What made the Yeagerists especially difficult for the heroes to defeat is that many of them were former friends and colleagues.

Unlike cutting down Pure Titans or enemy Marleyans, every life taken by the Yeagerist menace was viscerally personal and emotionally difficult to stomach. All the same, the Allied Coalition could not sit idly by while the Yeagerists attempted to obliterate the entire world.

Updated on May 11th, 2023 by Ajay Aravind: Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan has earned its name as one of Shonen's Dark 3 anime series, an epithet it fully deserves. The story's narrative beats are distinctly violent with political undertones,...
