Shaping up to be great
BoxwoodExpress22 April 2019
Before I start his review, I would just like to say that even though I love Gravity Falls, its affect on the cartoon community has been very negative. Due to its success, people bemoan any mystery/supernatural cartoon of any kind as a Gravity Falls ripoff. This has happened to Over the Garden Wall, Hilda, Welcome to the Wayne, and now Victor & Valentino. Seriously? Not every show is a copy of Gravity Falls. end of rant, let's get on with the review.

V&V is a love letter to Mexican culture. It reminds me a lot of the obscure Nicktoon El Tigre. It also gives me vibes of The Book of Life and Coco. If you're Mexican/Spanish/etc, you'll definitely like this show. I know I did and I recognized a lot of the culture.

The characters are very quirky and believable. The animation is alright (although it looks too similar to other CN shows on at the moment). The opening theme is well-composed. The show has a lot of supernatural and mystery elements to it that shape it up to be an exciting series. It's episodic as of now, but it will likely get more story driven as time. The only issue I have with the series is that it can get a little boring, but that's really my problem since I'm tired all the time and have a short attention span.

A mexican gravity falls
WeAreLive28 April 2019
Well this was one of the few cartoons on the cartoon network line up I was looking forward to and now I can give it a proper review.

After watching around 4-5 episodes of this it is safe to see it is good show but it could be improved.

This show is like gravity falls but shorter.

It is about two boys who in each episode have a magical mystery.

In terms of plot it is good but just like the problem with every cartoon network show on currently it is an eleven minute format and realistically to make it more plot devoted it could be 22 minutes.

Also the animation/art style is too similar to other shows on cartoon network. But other then that it is a decent show.

I've seen better.
zander-131868 May 2019
This show seems to rely heavily on the "Gravity Falls"-esque setting without giving much in terms of a plot. Who are these boys? Why are they in this town? These questions have little to no answers with an art style that looks suspiciously like the Ben 10 reboot. Not to mention the shoddy voice acting coming from Victor 80% of the time. This show could have done so much better than we've gotten so far.

it has potential

I like cartoons with magic and mysteries. i was missing that on cartoon network. the episodes actually are creative, nothing generic and predictable. it also doesn't have those cliche school episodes. it also reminds of gravity falls and a bit of adventure time

Has potential, but needs improvements

Warning: Spoilers
This show is pretty good from what I've seen, but certain stuff in the show makes me want to hate it.

Firstly, Victor sounds SUPER annoying and whenever I hear him talk, I want to permanently disable my eardrums. He sounds so high-pitched and whiny and seems to always be asking for someone to help him.

Secondly, a lot of the episodes are super repetitive. It's just some supernatural thing threatens them, it causes trouble, and then they find a way to defeat it. Some episodes have somewhat original plots, like Victor and Valentino finding a watch that lets them be in two places at the same time so that they can go to a pool party.

Third, they seem to be trying to make this show a direct competitor to Craig of the Creek or at least trying to pair the shows together, when they have NOTHING in common at all!

Creepy cool y chingon

We absolutely love this new show, especially the two main characters and Charlene. Can't wait to see more of her creepy badass paranormal self! For a Latinx family, one of the best shows around combining fun contemporary animation with traditional Mesoamerican myth and folklore. !Adelante chicxs! Way to go y muchas felicidades to everyone who's made this show possible!

Lots of Potential, Weak Execution
ondiominio24 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
When I first saw the pilot for Victor and Valentino, I was engaged by the dark latino-themes and the intriguing plot-line it had, with admittedly characters that needed some work, it had felt like somewhat of a successor to Gravity Falls with latin and mexican folk-lore added to it, I was excited when I heard this show had gotten picked up.

As of the time I am writing this, its been nearly 2 months since this show premiered, having 14 episodes that have premiered. I think this show has been off to a pretty weak start. Now, the show is nowhere near bad at all, as a matter of fact, from the assortment of episodes we currently have, the show's been pretty decent so far. My biggest problem with Victor and Valentino is the execution of the episodes, I think the ideas behind the episodes are great and have lots of potential, but the execution of some of the episodes have been very weak and in some cases pretty bad.

Take for example the episode "The Dark Room", where Val wants to join a photography club but is rejected, so he goes out to take a picture of the legendary chupacabra. the idea for the episode sounds great, but after seeing the episode, I feel it was executed in a pretty bad way. Spoilers for the episode but, it turns out the chupacabra is just a misunderstood creature who likes animals and hates having pictures taken of him, and is instead interested in making sculptures of the animals he admires. This had me utterly disappointed with how things turned out, not to mention that the trope of "a scary creature is actually a misunderstood loner who's actually nice" is very redundant and just came off to me as a half-assed way to wrap up the episode.

Some other minor problems I have with the show are the fact that the some of the characters we're supposed to know are very underdeveloped, like how Valentino just feels like an overly protective guy who comes off as a bit of a prick sometimes. Also, the animation of the show feels cheap, like it had the budget of the PPG 2016 reboot, where the movements look stiff and there are shots that just look awful, as another example, in "Folk Art Foes" when HueHue jumps onto the table of someone's quinceañera, the movement of HueHue just looks wrong and the shot looks bad. I think that some of the issues I previously mentioned could be fixed if the characters were given more time to develop in episodes, and if the show received a higher budget animation-wise. I feel as if this show would work better in a 22-minute format, where they could devote more time to developing the characters and making the stories better executed.

That doesn't mean this show is without it's pros though, some of the ideas that have worked have been pretty well done, the voice-work is pretty top-notch, and I think that some of the more recent episodes have been better than the first few. I think that if this show takes a more story-driven direction and works on how each episode is executed, I think this could become a great show. Bur alas, with the amount of problems the show has right now, I think that Victor and Valentino is just a decent show. The show does do things right, but the ideas for the stories are just executed in a very weak manner, the characters need more development, and they focus a bit too much on comedic aspects that just fall flat at times. This show needs work in order for people to have a good time with this show.

I would personally check out at least 4 episodes of this show to see what you think, they can be any 4 since the show is currently episodic, but remember that this show isn't going to be the most amazing thing ever, as the problems i mentioned are pretty noticeable in some of the episodes. The show honestly needs as much support as it can get so it can improve, because I honestly do not want to see this show shafted off with only 1 season behind its belt. Give V&V a watch, just don't expect it to be the most revolutionary thing ever.

The biggest disappointment of the year
TheBLTSandwich11 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In 2016, the pilot for Victor and Valentino was released on Cartoon Network's YouTube channel (around the same time as Infinity Train, ironically). As soon as I watched it, I fell in love. The pilot had good writing, some comedy here and there, likeable characters and a really interesting story. Plus, it ended on an AWESOME cliffhanger that made a full series pickup sound super promising. If the show were to become an actual series on Cartoon Network, it would be like a celebration of Mexican lore and culture, a Mesoamerican Gravity Falls of sorts with some Drake and Josh thrown into the mix. When it was announced many months later that both V&V and Infinity Train got the green light from the network, I was ecstatic. Two amazing pilots now becoming full series? This was going to be awesome! A bright future was certainly ahead for Cartoon Network.

Flash forward to August 2019. V&V has been going on for almost six months and Infinity Train has just wrapped up its first season. Sadly, I can say that only one of these shows lived up to its hype. And I'll bet you can guess which one I'm talking about.

So far, Victor and Valentino has been, pretty much, a mess. What many thought was going to be a wacky comedy with cool Mexican paranormal creatures and an underlying story is, in reality, yet another slice-of-life cartoon with awful characters and cool Mexican paranormal creatures that SOMETIMES show up. I've laid out the reasons below on why I think the show fails.

Slice-of-life aspect: There are already a ton of slice-of-life 'toons on Cartoon Network presently (Craig of the Creek, We Bare Bears, PPG reboot) and in the past (Regular Show, Clarence, Uncle Grandpa). Granted, all of those other shows aren't bad, but why do we need more like them? I was hoping that Victor and Valentino would be a fresh of breath air and would maybe lead up to something big, especially with Grandma Chata explaining at the end of the pilot that in her small village, there's more than meets the eye. Unfortunately, so far, every episode just returns to the status quo at the end. Characters don't learn their lessons and nothing really changes. It's a monster of the week show that only has monsters half of the time. Sometimes, episodes are literally just mundane dramas; for example, "Fistfull of Balloons" was another "whodunnit" episode with a predictable "surprise" culprit.

Characters: This is, by far, the thing that brings the show down the most. Our loveable main characters from the pilot are completely ruined here. Victor is a spoiled brat that is extremely selfish and goes out of his way to get what he wants, even if it's at the expense of hurting others, including Valentino. He kind of suffers consequences at the end of each episode, but during the next story, the show resets and Victor's back to where he was before. Even his voice was more toned down during the pilot. Here, it's higher pitched and super grating on the ears. I don't mind when show creators voice their own characters if they're actually good at acting, but Diego Molano unfortunately creates a very annoying voice that isn't fun to listen to at all. Valentino is better, but not by much. I actually prefer Rico Rodriguez's voice in the pilot, but Sean-Ryan Peterson doesn't do a bad job or anything. At the very least, his voice is normal and not a pain to listen to. While Valentino's voice is okay, his personality isn't. He is very wimpy and mentions things like using lotion and doing yoga, which just screams "try-hard" to me. It's like the writers want to make him as nerdy as possible by having him do stereotypical "nerd" things. Grandma Chata may be one of the only decent characters in the show, but we know so little about her. That cool transformation you saw of her at the end of the pilot? Yeah, you won't see that in the actual series. She could have made a fantastic character yet she is totally gone to waste here. The side characters are pretty bad, too, the worst being Reynaldo and Reynalda. Don Jalapeno is just boring, Charlene is weird, and Xochi is decent. Pineapple annoys me. Maria Teresa can be interesting occasionally. CaoCao made for a very stupid one-off gag. Guillermo can be amusing at times (good thing they got a decent voice actor for him). And Rosa is your average child, I guess. There are more characters, but this is a big enough list to officially say that vast majority of the characters are not good.

Creatures: The creatures that show up in V&V are just..okay. Some are neat, but others are sort of...lame. Like, none of them really seem to pose an actual threat, especially considering our main characters always come out victorious with no real evidence that they were ever in danger. I like the fact that the monsters actually come from Mexican folklore. I just wish they were more exciting.

Comedy: There have been only a few times during this show where I have laughed. I've gotten through certain episodes where I haven't chuckled at all, or even smiled for that matter. I see that the writers are trying to add hints of comedy in episodes, but they bomb hard almost every time.

Well, there you have it. My full-out review on why I think this show is a stinker. I was hoping for so much when I first saw that pilot. In fact, I recently rewatched the pilot and all I kept thinking throughout it was how much BETTER it is than the actual series. I don't know what happened. I really don't. I'm honestly shocked at all the glowing ten-star reviews on here, as the people on the other places on the internet I've visited pretty much collectively have the same opinion as me. All I can say is that I truly believe that Victor and Valentino should have simply remained an eight minute short.

So funny, unique and smart!
estrada-cristian849 May 2019
I'm really enjoying and loving Victor & Valentino it's incredibly funny, unique and smart. It's really cool to see diversity in animation. This is already a favorite for a lot of my little cousins, nephews & nieces. I'm a big fan of Diego Molano (the creator of the show) and Frankie Quinones (voice of Maria Teresa)!

Great premise ruined by awful voice acting
The show has great animation and clever writing, but this is a great example of just because you created the show, doesn't mean you should voice one of the characters. The voice acting for Virctor is monotone, emotionless, and quite frankly bland. I don't care if he created the show, his voice acting is horrible and to me ruins the show of any potential it had

Gravity Falls Ripoff with the main characters from Regular Show
trebordjackson10 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's more of the same. Gravity Falls but alot less funny. The main characters are even a duo of siblings that live with old realitives in the Summer. It rips off the regular show idea to the letter. One character says don't do that thing the other characters do that thing then it makes a ridiculous third act villian. Also the skinny one sounds like Ren from Ren and Stimpy and it throws me off.

Dia del Idiota 😠
a34trgv112 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Back in 2019, this show aired on Cartoon Network and while it looked decent enough, I've never heard anyone talk about the show in a positive or negative light. Having watched a large majority of season 1 on HBOMax, I can confirm that this show is yet another misfire from the network that brought us Steven Universe, Samurai Jack, Ed, Edd, n Eddy, and Chowder. From awful writing to an insufferable co-main protagonist, the only aspect of the show that I found enjoyment out of was the animation and that's not a good sign.

Created by Diego Molano, this show focuses on 2 half brothers living in Monte Macabre, Mexico, where they go on adventures and discover fantastical creatures. The premise could've made for a very interesting and unique show that explores Mexican folklore and creatures not previously depicted in mainstream media. Unfortunately that premise is botched by the terrible execution. The first thing to note is that this show has very bad writing. Each episode follows a formula: Victor and Valentino are told not to do something, they do it anyway, shenanigans ensue and they learn a lesson at the end that's forgotten about by the next episode. This makes every single episode formulaic and predictable, leading to no surprises or unique twists. I also don't like how the creatures are depicted as basically every day people with odd quirks and not legitimate threats. I expected the Chuparcabra to be more animal like, not a pacifist vegetarian. I'm not familiar with the Lechuza, but an overly caring mother isn't funny to me: it's lame. Surete wasn't given enough time for me to fully invest in what it's about, the Zepolte might as well have been a dog, the Cadejos are just magical wolves and I much prefer the Land of the Dead that was depicted in The Book Of Life and Coco. The humor also fails as it stems from weak slapstick, cringy puns and gross out.

I'm willing to invest into the show if the characters were interesting. Unfortunately, at best they're just dull and at worst they're Victor Guadalupe Morena Laguna Calaca Calavera. When it comes to cartoon protagonists, Victor is one of the worst. He's rude, selfish, arrogant, stupid and a lazy little brat. He disobeys his Grandma, he makes Valentino do most (if not all the work), he lies constantly, he told everyone Valentino sleeps with a teddy bear, he cheats in Surete and doesn't admit it until the end, and he stole a bottle of magic hair growth formula to grow a mustache. I have no interest in watching the rest of the show, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he committed worse crimes as the show progresses. And no, being a kid is NOT an excuse as when I was a kid and I did something bad, I rightfully got punished for it and never did that bad thing again. Yet because the status quo is God in this show, those rules don't apply. Valentino isn't much better as he doesn't have much of a personality other than not being terrible like his brother. Sure, he collects stuff, he's more obedient and more responsible than Victor, but he doesn't have much else going for him other than what he does. Writing tip: characters are not just defined by what they do, but who they are. Valentino is just Victor's brother who has no choice but to put up with him. Chata, the boys' grandmother, is unfortunately wasted potential as she's also lacking in personality. She's a blind witch (?) who disciplines the boys when they misbehave...and that's it, that's all she's good for. Charlene has a crush on Victor (lame), Pineapple is her bodyguard (whatever), Don is the short tempered shop owner who gets butterflies in his stomach when he talks to Chata (not funny), and Xochi is the typical apathetic teen (zzzz). The other characters that reside in Monte Macabre begin and end with their respective archtypes.

The voice acting also isn't great, save for the veteran actors who are trying their best with the lousy material they're given. I've grown really tired of hearing full grown men playing kids in cartoons (with some exceptions of course) and Diego Molano has fallen into that trap of making Victor sound nothing like a kid even in puberty. He sounds more like a short obnoxious man pretending to be a kid. Sean-Ryan Petersen isn't much better as he sounds more like a middle aged man than a kid, nevermind a teenager. Laura Patalano sounds like a kind abuela and she can be firm when necessary. Cristina Milizia makes a convincing little girl with a lisp and I think Diego Molano does a better job voicing Pineapple than he does Victor, even if he doesn't say much. Frankie Quinones as Charlene and Pineapples' grandmother, Maria, just sounds awful. I really hate the voice chosen for this character as she sounds more like an obnoxious gay stereotype than an actual person. Jason Hightower is fine as Don, though his character being always being in a bad mood get's old very fast. Cristina Vee is alright as Xochi, though with so little to work with it's hard for me to give her any more praise. Tom Kenny, while it's nice to hear his voice, the character he plays Guillermo is a very lame one-note character who speaks very deeply and slowly (a farcry from when he voiced Eduardo in Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends). Spencer Rothbell sounds like he's doing an impression of Sumo from Clarence when playing Miguelito and it's very distracting. Yuri Lowenthal gives a rather grating performance as Baker, an obnoxious brat who really ought to be bopped in the nose. The Book of Life director, Jorge Gutierrez also appears as Sal and El Toro and I thought that was a nice treat.

The only real positive I can say about this show is that the animation is very well done. The characters all have spherical heads and bodies and flow in believable and natural ways. Occassionally the characters would use exaggerated facial features and squash and stretch for comedic affect (though they never landed for me). The fantastical folklore creatures are well designed as well, making them look like real forces to be reckoned with. The backgrounds are very well detailed and Monte Macabre looks like a very lived in town in Mexico.

Victor and Valentino is yet another dud from Cartoon Network and another example of a good premise botched in the execution. The writing is terrible, the main character is a complete ignoramous with the other characters not fairing much better, it's not funny and the voice action is passable at best and very grating at worse. Good animation does not a good cartoon make and this is not at all a good cartoon. My take: watch Kid Cosmic for a good premise that's given a really good execution and just don't bother with Victor and Valentino.

This series needs a story arc
elonmusk-is_a_moron18 June 2022
The main problem this series has, in my opinion, is the lack of a story arc, similar to Gravity Falls.

The formulaic nature of the show affects it negatively, and it gets boring seeing Victor always making the same mistakes and never learning his lesson. (Or better said, the learns his lesson, but totally forgets them at the next episode)

Victor is an extremely unlikeable lead. Valentino is way more likeable, but the show often treats him like a punching bag.

I kinda wish the show had more continuity and a more ambitious story; even El Tigre managed to combine very well the comedy and more ambitious plot-lines.

Creative & hilarious Latino cartoon
adrimag-3675015 May 2019
The themes & culture references are Latin base. Their grandma Chata telling them to behave by spooking them that some evil supernatural being could appear to harass them. Or when Victor says "don't you know I'm loco" to Valentino referring to either Blood in Blood out or Cypress Hill's Insane in the Brain.

Warning: Spoilers
It got old! Every episode the same thing!! A villain comes, usually undead or related to darkness like in the last few episodes, and then they go away or die! Its getting old. I used to like it but it's getting old. Well I know ancient spirits come to life, that's the point of this show, but I wish they could come up with something else besides ancient spirits. It's kinda boring. So if you start watching it, you might like it like me and then soon you'll start thinking it's getting boring and old.

I like the writers took their time to learn about authentic mesoamerican stories and actual Mexica customs. I like the Alebrije story was really close to the original, even tough they use makeup names. I would say keep up with humor, the great research of what Tenochtitlán was and how it would be without the sacrifice part. Great balance on Mexica tradition and today's Mexican customs. I hope it just gets better

Just meh
Ika150618 June 2019
This show has a lot of problems. By a lot, I mean mostly Victor. He is annoying, bratty and disrespectful. He is not very charming, funny or likeable. His voice actor honestly does a suckish voice with him. He (just like cricket from big city greens) sounds older than he should and when he tries to sound young it's painful on the ears. I like Valentino and the Grandma and that about it. The artstyle is pretty bland (it just looks like the Ben 10 and PPG reboot). I don't care for any of the mystery and paranormal town stuff, speaking of which, it's hard to deny this cartoon is disturbingly similar to Gravity Falls, a cartoon I LOVE! It's about a two siblings staying in a town with spooky going ons and secrets for the summer with their elder relative. It also feels like with the main dynamic it took inspiration from regular Show. But it is not as funny or interesting as those mentioned shows. It's just boring and bland. 5/10 from me.

Warning: Spoilers
Finally, a good show on Cartoon Network. I feel like there hasn't been one to be released since 2007. Don't get me wrong, I liked Adventure Time but got way behind on the seasons and (I think that's why) it seemed boring after season 4. Like Gravity Falls show is gripping. But I wouldn't say it was milked from Gravity Falls. It holds its own originality, and reminds me more of Steven Universe. Mostly because of how the characters look, and the chubbier brother, Val, reminds me of Steven. I like the plots, that usually have a dark theme. It's like Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and Coco.

** spoiler alert **

There was even an episode where they go to the underworld to see some famous guy that died, and disguise themselves as skeletons. The story wasn't like Coco's though.

It's usually Vic that causes problems. Val is the more mature, smarter one that usually has to fix what his brother starts, unless Vic is able to fix them himself to learn a lesson.

Formulaic monster of the week show
oazxe16 October 2020
What started off as a Hispanic monster of the week show has become hispanic Scooby doo.

Victor and valentino, in the beginning, was a show about two boys, victor and valentino (who have a disputed relationship, as the show says they are half brothers but then doubles down on that) who pretty much save their town of monte macabre (MONTY-MACAB) on a regular basis.

This show has a formula that it follows pretty strictly with little variation. One of the characters is doing something (some episodes skip this part) Something (be it one of the other characters, or an external force) causes the character(s) to kickstart the plot. Monster is introduced. The problem is introduced a short time after. Time. Problem solved (status quo)

In earlier episodes, it was a bit (a lot) less obvious that it followed this formula, plus the writing didn't make tap water seem like one of mankind's groundbreaking achievements. Now its quite literally like Scooby-Doo

or Power Rangers but animated because monster of the week, cheesy writing and formulaic plots (but i like power rangers, it was meant to be that way)
