Dark and harrowing

Warning: Spoilers
MARIONETTE is a darker-than-dark slice of social drama with a Korean high school setting. It explores sexual exploitation in the context of the Internet, as females fall victim to predatory groups of men who film their crimes and upload them for others to enjoy. Although the content isn't explicit, the subject matter is extremely adult in tone which makes this a harrowing watch. As with other Korean social dramas I've seen (such as NO TOMORROW), towards the climax the tone shifts more into thriller territory, with a satisfying denouement. The usual strong acting and quality production values make it a decent watch.

this is a propaganda movie

Absolutely idiotic behavior of actors, which could not happen in real life.

This is a propaganda movie aiming at protecting young girls from sexual abuse. Absolutely not worth watching.

Quite an interesting thriller...

I had the chance to sit down to watch the 2017 South Korean thriller "Marionette" here in 2021. Sure, I hadn't even heard about the movie prior to sitting down to watch it. But it being a South Korean movie, and one that I hadn't already seen, was more than sufficient to make me have an interest in sitting down to watch it.

And I must say that I really found writer and director Han-Wook Lee's 2017 movie to be a rather entertaining and enjoyable movie. It definitely had a very riveting and compelling story that grabbed me and took me along for a very well-told but also sort of disturbing storytelling.

"Marionette" is the type of movie that will not have a widely broad appeal I think, given the contents of the storyline and the topic that it deals with. But if you sit down to watch it, it is actually a rather good movie. And it revolves around some disturbing issues about abusive mentality and modern technology. Something that is very relatable to today's world and society, unfortunately.

The acting in the movie is good, and the actors and actresses do put on some very compelling and believable performances, which definitely helps to bring the movie to life in a very realistic manner. And the movie had some very detailed characters that you easily associate and relate to, and this definitely made the movie all the more enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed Han-Wook Lee's "Marionette" and it was quite a surprise of a movie as it turned out to be this interesting. My rating of this 2017 thriller lands on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars. It is definitely well-worth the time to sit down and watch.
