Wasted Potential

A.I.C.O. Tells the story of Japan being overrun with "matter", a sort of abstract material that destroys everything in it's path. The story is a bit generic but the pacing make's up for that. The biggest issue I had with this anime was the main character; Tachibana, Aiko. it's not that she lacks depth, it's the way she reacts to every situation. It's like she was made to be shocked at every turn. And it gets tiresome fast. The best aspect of the anime is the artwork. The elegant animations and fast pace of the series is what kept the two dimensional characters in check and made the series watchable. I did like the small details that made the world of A.I.C.O feel more authentic, e.g. the artificial suits that needed to be fed in order to function properly. I wish a little more thought was put into the world building of the series, it felt like I was watching a CW series with good visuals. There's nothing groundbreaking here, but it does make for a good popcorn anime.

Decent, fast moving anime, though not particularly special
chacham19 April 2020
Pros: Moves at a fast pace. Most things are explained.

Meh: Story is nothing special. Mildly thought provoking.

Cons: None, really.

This is a basic anime with a semi-clear goal early on, and a few twists along the way that aren't too crazy. There a couple thought provoking aspects to it but nothing major. The ending is a little perplexing,, as you wonder why they are doing that, and then they wrap it up nicely for you anyway.

Decent, fast moving anime to watch, nothing terribly special though.

Decent, but...
Snootz20 October 2019
This is a decent anime. Well-crafted (although one does get really tired of The Burst after about almost immediately). The story is unique and the characters, although anime-cliche, well-enough created. Some of the dialog is a little cheesy, but that's not unusual in an anime.

The real problem is toward the ending, where the plot gets somewhat confusing (as in "who is what at this point?") and is both anti-climactic and somewhat predictable. For several episodes it seems to be a repetition of "dodge the Burst kill the Burst evade the Burst shoot the Burst" ad nauseum. Still it tends to remain interesting throughout. The rather weak ending drops this down to an "above mediocre" level, but doesn't place it in my list of "good anime".

They could have had a much stronger, better and more satisfying ending (really, there were no limits to the different endings they could have used), so the somewhat dull choice they made was rather poor writing overall.

Worth a watch perhaps and not "bad anime", but just not up there with the greats.

A very 2010 SciFi movies plot in 12 eps limited series.
sisubalan18 September 2022
Plot wise its okay, something we couldve seen on several 2010s scifi movies or early 2000s movies. Characters design and voice castings were absolutely fine as well. Animation style was okay the best was the sound scores and the very 2010's shounen opening/ending song. Its like a whole scifi movie turn into a 12 episode limited series, which was good. The story gets a bit complicated as it reach towards the conclusion but the ending was really good and might be tear jerking for some. Packed with actions and lacking in adventure aspects as the series progresses very fast. A great time killer and definitely recommended for everyone.

An interesting concept that disapoints at nearly every turn
dameon_green12 March 2020
The overall idea is interesting but the flaws are so significant it's a hard pass.

Con's: -Overall story makes little sense. -Stilted dialog that reminds me of the '70's and '80's dubbed Saturday martial arts films, and the dialog is still weak with subtitles on. -Cardboard cutouts for characters with terrible development.
  • Poorly done tropes, especially the "Reunion" which made no sense at all to say nothing of the revel "Gasp" in every episode.

It almost feels like they took ideas from every popular anime, put them on flash cards and had a focus group assemble the story arc then animated it.

Watch with subtitles
mra-6247226 April 2018
I really enjoyed this anime and managed to binge the whole season overnight into the next morning. I've been hearing many complaints about the English dub but luckily I didn't even know that there was a dub so I watched in Japanese with English subtitles.

The cast of characters is diverse and each has their own motive for participating in the deadly mission put before them. Many mysteries unfold throughout the 1st season and the pacing is handled quite well.

All in all one of my favorite Anime series in quite a while. If you like Knights if Sedonia you'll find much to love in A.I.C.O. 12 episodes wrapped up the story line perfect while leaving room to explore much more in (hopefully) future seasons.

Waste of time

Production values are good aside from the English voice-acting, which (especially the main character) is quite bad. Story is pretty light-weight considering the subject matter. I consider it anime-light at best.

A slight variation on a standard theme.
beastboy-035093 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
My first thought about this show was that there are giant tentacles eating people. Except that the giant tentacles are huge pieces of cancerous material. And their victims aren't sexually defenseless girls.

I am far more forgiving with the dubbing. There are a few parts where the Japanese and the English doesn't really work. I majored in languages in college and I understand some thing can be translated loosely. It still works. It may not be accurate. In cases like this I figure the translator knew what emotion was being conveyed and picked the best words. For example, the Aiko girl sees something bad happening and says "Ne...Ne". I think that means "No" based on the other uses of "Ne" in this show and others. The subtitle said "Come on" instead. It still works because you can tell she wanted something else to happen. Language can be very literal and abstract at times... sometimes in the same sentence! I think the translator got all the technical stuff correct. The issue was the little idioms and expressions. I always ask myself: "Is the speaker's intention / meaning being conveyed effectively to the audience?". Subtitles are what they are...or they izz what they izz. Maybe the kids in the show are speaking trendy slang Japanese? I am not a Japanese speaker so I can only guess. Indeed however, feel like the subtitles did their job.

I was more confused by the plot. My advice is to write down or keep track of all the characters' actions. The different doctors (who are called sensei. Sensei?) are easy to confuse. They look very different. I actually enjoyed the entire ride more than the last five minutes. The guns and the tech were pretty cool. The show has a nice wholesome ending. I am still uncertain how it got to that ending. It was an enjoyable experience.

My criticisms are how easily the matter was stopped. The writers didn't do a good job explaining why the matter never made it out of the valley. I think it had to do with the electricity stunning it. If that is true why was the matter able to get so far? There has to be many ways of running an electrical current into where the matter was running amuck. If electricity stuns the cancer tentacles, why use the elaborate guns? Shock it with cattle prods. Make a suit that emits an electrical charge and neutralize the matter.

The matter's abilities were never properly explained. Number one rule of monster movies is to clearly define what the monster can and cannot do. I would buy the mysterious qualities of the matter. The fact that the divers had "evidence" of how to handle the matter dispels that. What about fire? Maybe I missed the part where the matter is impervious to flames? That's a mortal monster movie sin. Always clearly define your monster's capabilities. The movie "Alien" did that and the alien was still scary and mysterious. Everytime the divers fired a weapon I was in disbelief if it would work. Throughout the show the divers had special deliveries of custom ammo delivered to them. The matter they faced was new, dangerous and there was no evidence to combat it. Once they reached "pry-mary point-uh" all that stopped. Except that I think they were facing new matter. Maybe I missed something? I was eating smarties near the end of the series.

The show does an awesome job of showing actual military equipment. The tank was either a type 10 or type 90 MBT. There were type 270 MLRS and the M110 self propelled howitzer. It is always cool to see real equipment in anime.

The series was good. The story was confusing. But I suspect most sci fi animes are supposed to have weird endings. Neon Genesis Evangelion has a strange ending. If you can forgive it's flaws the show is great biological crisis sci-fi.

Worst dub I've ever seen
akedaddy18 March 2018
This story may or may have not been interesting. I was pretty distracted by the worst voice acting I've ever seen in 20 years. It was like watching a throwback Kung fu movie where the dubbing is just laughably bad. It was obvious that no one stopped and actually cared about the finished product.

Tachibana's voice is driving me insane
itaratorina24 March 2018
Main character's voice is awefully squeaky, but this is not it. The character herself is unbelievably shallow and behaves like it is her first day living through at least the first half of the anime. I don't know if she is going to improve in the second half and probably will never know, but I know for sure if I see the surprised look on her face and hear that squeaky "huh" again I will give the anime 1 Star. I gave 5 only because the idea is interesting. Oh and Gummy is annoying too.

Chanllenging physicialism
Deauerl5 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First, I cannot believe there many people complaining the English dub and give very low rate. What makes these people think that English dub could be a criteria that could be based on for giving a rate? I have not watched many anime yet, therefore I cannot peomise that my opinion and taste or experience would fit others' but personally I quite like the story just because it is quite moving at the end. Just that. I don't want to make comments on the depth cuz I feel the depth and profoundity are what to be very subjective. If I have to pick the defects philosophically, well there is a huge ambuguity when it tells about the duplicaiton of brain. I have tried my best to figure it out, supposing that it is trying to say that the duplication produces another complete brain with another consciousness but for emphasizing its characteristic of being duplicated, AICO's brain shares the memories with the original one. Just try to think about it! Duplication of the brain means that a completely identical celebral structure is produced, and it has another free will that is separated from the original one, which is suggesting that physicialism is wrong. But somehow, I don't care of this degree of discourse because I have realised that the so-called depth must assume a form that can easily be understood and must be so clear to the audiences that 'this point should be the embodiment of depth that you guys believe'. Therefore I really cannot identify that depth is. So, the story is moving, that is enough for me.

Somewhere in between fantastic and good.
ggibby-8849225 March 2018
While I agree that the english dub version, let's just say- could be improved, it had a lot good going for it. The story is enough to keep the viewers attention, and there were more than enough plot twists and story details to keep me interested. While I don't think this was a truly fantastic anime, I do think it's worth the watch. Just don't watch it in the english dub.

Good story, a bit of a disappointment Warning: Spoilers
I felt that this deserves at least a five star review, but I cannot bring myself to rate this any higher than a six. I loved the main characters and also the concept but I feel that there were a lot of things that should have been elaborated and expanded more, along with some more ideas.

It would have received a higher review if it wasn't for the amount of time it took to give the amount of backstory that I felt was needed and even then, it still disappointed me in that aspect.

There were a lot of twists involved, I mean I never expected the final episodes to play off how they did.

The ending felt rushed to me, and I felt a feeling of "wow, this sucks" about the ending, but this is all my opinion and also I am giving this a 6 because I did enjoy this, but it could have been better. (The gates, weapons and so on.)

Ghost in the Shell meets Knight of Sidonia
cibili22 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Japan is under attack of a non-formed Matter (like Gauna from KoS) where no one knows the origin. A group of operatives led by a young student Yuya claims that our protagonist little girl named Aiko can end this Matter.

He calims that similar to GitS, her brain (ghosts) is separated from her body (Shell) in an surgery. Her body is a fake body and in order to end Matter, her brain has to be transferred to her original body which is in the very source of Matter.

As they claim that they can rescue her mother and brother who are beside the original, she accepts. So the series go on watching Aiko, Yuya and other Divers (the professionals who go on missions close to Matter) try to reach source of Matter. On further episodes, lots of mysteries are unlocked and Aiko realize that nothing is really what it seems.

It is a good anime! Watch it
mayteareas19 March 2018
The anime it's far from a very good one, but it has from the begging a good storyline and action so it is hard for to get bothered. The main carecter is Tachibana, you may get little bothered with her but it is normal. The good thing about the anime is the design of the animation I really appreciated at all!

An amazingly O.K. show
dwarves-3600314 January 2019
Though it wasn't great, A.I.C.O Incarnation definitely was not bad or mediocre. It wasn't great either though. It was OK. Netflix has been pumping out anime like crazy so it would be easy for this title to slip under the radar. The story takes place in the future where Artificially Intelligent Cellular Organisms (AICO) are created to advance humanity's medical knowledge in the hopes that one day they could make human beings immortal. However, an incident occurred that created the "Burst" a mass of cellular organisms that swarmed over Kurobe Gorge, consuming anyone and anything in its path before its advance is halted but not reversed. Aico Tachibana is just a normal school girl until she (quite literally) runs into a recent transfer student named Yuya Kanzaki, who, after a daring escape from several government spies, reveals to her that she was in a car accident that nearly killed. Her father, Yura Tachibana, created a duplicate body and brain for Aico. A complex and and top secret surgery was performed that switched the brains of Aico and the duplicate, placing her brain in the duplicate body and the duplicate in the real body. It was successful, but the surgery made the duplicate brain panic and create malignant matter at an alarming pace. In order to stop the "Matter" that has filled the gorge, Aico, Yuya, and a group of mercenaries have to traverse through the gorge and reach the research facility to perform the same surgery and stop the burst once and for all.

I thought that the story was just the average sci-fi plot that didn't show me anything new, with the secondary characters being blander than a bag of rice. But the animation more than makes up for these problems, and we can all thank Studio Bones for this. Bones has been going above and beyond the call of duty in its titles like "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood", "Mob Psycho 100" and most notably " My Hero Academia", and this show is now different. The action scenes are wonderfully choreographed and with "Matter" seeming bright and alive, making you feel that it has a mind of it's own. Thought some other animation studios would have cut corners and used copious amounts of CGI, Studio Bones goes that extra mile in providing a vibrant setting with wonderful animation. Thought the plot and characters were not great, I kept watching to see those beautifully rendered scenes and backgrounds. If your bored and looking for a binge watch on Netflix, look up this title

A little slow but ultimately rewarding
Phil-1 November 2018
A.I.C.O sets forth a fairly simple story of a girl essentially trying to return home after a catastrophic event called the burst consumes a portion of Japan. The burst is a huge growth of living cells that seems to be out of control and set on destroying everything in it's path.

This review contains NO spoilers and personally I'd recommend not reading too many reviews as it's better to watch and enjoy without too much prior knowledge of what is going to happen.

The story does run fairly slow but is designed to give you chance to understand all of the main characters. There is plenty of action the whole way through and small clues are left throughout as to how the story may or may not pan out.

The animation is fluid and great and the voice acting was well done and suited to all the characters. I noticed other reviews stating the voice acting was bad (referring mainly to the dub) as I watch all anime in it's original Japanese dialect I decided to go back and watch the last episode dubbed to see. I think it's important to note that when I have got into an anime in Japanese and then see a dubbed episode I don't normally like it as I've become accustomed to the voices. However in this case I was surprised that the dub voices were well matched for the main characters. I can only assume the voice acting issues were not from the actors themselves but perhaps from needing to fill or shorten sentences to match as closely as possible to the anime visual mouth movements. For example if a sentence is long in Japanese but in English only ends up translated to ,"I want to help", then the director will need to add in words to match the visual speech aspect. This can result in a less natural flowing attribute to the language used and ultimately the anime can suffer for this.

Overall I think A.I.C.O deserves 8 stars. I couldn't help but binge watch to satisfy my craving of what happens next. It kept me interested the whole way through with the first few and last few episodes being the most interesting.

If you're looking for the best version and have no problems with reading subtitles then watch the Japanese dub.

Try the new dub
WeAreLive15 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I would like to start off by saying don't listen to anyone who says the dub is bad (they must be referring to the original version) and it definitely does not ruin my experience. I am only looking for things to watching in a language I understand.

The old dub by IYUNO was not good at all, voice acting was bad, quality was poor, the script was badly handled somehow I handled it last but now looking back it was bad. Also, I would like to add on that I absolutely cringed how they addressed Akio Tachibana as either "Tachibana" or "Aiko chan" and I felt like telling "JUST CALL HER AIKO". When the new dub came out I was getting worried that they were going to do the same thing but luckily they did not. On top of this Aiko's voice sounded so high it made her so unlikeable as a character and Yuya's voice sounded like a fake Chris Hackney impression. (2/10 for this dub) luckily Netflix has deleted this dub from their app/website, however it still exists online everywhere else since the internet hasn't bother to delete it yet like they did with the 4KIDS One Piece and the Tokyopop Initial D.

The newer dub which is by Bang Zoom Entertainment in comparison was much better the voices sound very fitting and more refined. With skilled and trained voice actors like Xanthe Huynh, Billy Kametz (Who I thought sounded very similar to Matthew Mercer), Erica Mendez, Greg Chun, Ray Chase, Brinnana Knickerbocker, Jason Marmoucha, Khoi Dao, Erika Harlacher and so many other good voice actors. The quality of the dub is much better, the only improvement I would say is if they wouldn't just use the same set of voice actors inconsistently but other than that I am happy it got the dub it deserved from the one it originally go. Of course they will change one or two thing in the script to avoid copyright but it is closer to the original script as possible.

The show is also available in portuguese, french and spanish all on netflix. If you don't like dub then that is fine, I would happily inform you that a subbed version exists as well on Netflix, but please just don't bully other who want to watch it in a language they understand.

==Spoilers up coming==

Aiko is a girl in middle school, who after the burst has been unable to walk or use her legs and is at a hospital. A transfer student called Yuya walks in her class after he help back in her chair from an accident. Aiko somehow gains the ability to walk again. Some agents want to take Aiko with them but Yuya persures Aiko to make her learn that her body is not normal and her bro and mom are still alive. So, Aiko and a group are on a mission to find the clone of Aiko and rescue her parents.

In terms of characters I find Aiko very cute, bubbly and even determined, i am glad she is not portrayed as a regular cute girl in a sailor fuka, a princess that needs saving, useless, stuck up or even mary sue like. She may be adorable but she is very determined. Yuya as a character is shown to be very intelligent, all do no talk however, he is very over protective about Aiko. The rest of the characters were just average from his team. There was some hints in the series especially towards the last few episodes that Yuya and Aiko had feelings for one another. There is a big surprise about Yuya.

The music for intro and ending is epic and it gets me excited for each episode. And how they play the ending with Aiko walking back to her dorm room every episode is rather fitting.

Animation and art style was eye candy especially how some character like Aiko had bright eyes, however it is nothing new or special I have seen in anime.

The ending while it does tie up a lot of the plot, I still wonder what are our character will do next as Yuya promised the clone that he will create a world that she can live but we don't know what is this world.

what does mean to be human
sparkguy095 January 2019
Japan is being taken over by living matter that made up of artificial organisms. It up to girl to save the day before the matter over flows the dam. The thing is aiko is human in personality but she is not human. she is not action hero by any means in skill or personality. Everything is new to her but she has to step up to plate to stop the matter. personality wise she infp. she has to come terms is a she is an artificial organism, (like the mater) and her humanity. I found her back story heart warming. In this series there is a lot of action and the show kept on edge of my seat. the plot interesting but a viewer needs to play attention to what being revealed to make to sense of it.
