Maybe the biggest problem outside the bad plotting and dialogue is that this cast of characters feels so forced. Why are they even together? Why are they a group?
Alicia and Charlie head to the city to find a boat to rescue John and Strand but encounter Martha. After a brief standoff, Martha passes out from her wounds. They tied her up in the SWAT truck which they use to rescued the stranded duo.
At the hospital, Jim remains on the roof while the others locate Al. Instead, they find Al's note telling them she's going to try to escape, along with instructions on protecting her tapes if she dies. Morgan leaves to find her while the rest stay behind. From the roof, Morgan tosses a walker off the ledge an onto a car, attracting the walkers away from the hospital entrance. Though Morgan implores them to leave, the group rally to get Morgan off the roof using a firetruck. Martha escapes during the effort. As Walkers close in, Jim tells Sarah his beer recipe before jumping of the roof to distract the Walkers. Later that night, Martha takes Jim's now reanimated corpse.
This wasn't a terrible episode but it was, as so many this season have been, pretty bland. I had trouble paying attention partly because I have a hard time caring about these characters very much, or their predicaments. I don't care about Jim. I don't think Morgan is the "leader" still, and is only in that role because AMC wants him to be, not because it makes sense. Sarah and Wendell continue to be boring despite their quirks. I guess I just keep expecting them to die any time now, kind of like we knew Jim was a goner right away.
Fact is, we don't need any more new characters. We don't need a new psycho villain, either. Or a diesel truck. The zombies and the natural disaster stuff could have provided all the conflict we needed this half of the season without introducing even more new faces.
Am I just jaded? I want to care about this show but they're not making it easy. I'm having a hard time mustering the give-a-damn necessary to watch Fear for any other reason than to write these reviews. That's a shame. TV shouldn't feel like a chore - even when it's part of your job.
Maybe the biggest problem outside the bad plotting and dialogue is that this cast of characters feels so forced. Why are they even together? Why are they a group? At least with the Clark family we had an interesting dynamic between all the characters. The way the Clarks and the Salazars and Strand all came together made sense. They weren't all best buddies right away either, and in Season 3 they weren't even all on the same side the whole time. Now what are we left with? A bloated cast that barely resembles the core group.
The Walking Dead also has a bloated cast and many of the original characters are dead, but most of the characters in that show have been around for at least a few seasons. In Fear we have three characters that have been here since Season 1 and 2, and of those three only Alicia really matters. Sorry, but Strand hasn't been interesting since Madison left and Luciana stopped being cool the moment she got with Nick.
The rest of the Season 4 cast is either new or Morgan. Why not just make a brand new show instead of dismantling this one? Too much change in too short a period of time - and not enough of it good. I have very little faith that the season finale will turn things around. Then again, at the end of Season 2 I said they should probably just cancel it and move on, and then we got a really surprisingly good third season. So who knows?
