Underrate comedy
ks-6050021 September 2019
The leading actress indeed light up this story. She's funny but in a very natural way, one of the few can do that.

Enjoyable
Nothing groundbreaking but enjoyable to watch. I did love though that the main actress was heavily melanated and had natural hair. The fact that two gorgeous Black men were vying for her attention was wonderful as well. We don't see that in movies too often.

Awkward
larrys313 November 2019
Stand-up comedian Zadie (Sasheer Zamata) travels to her parents rural Bed & Breakfast where her ex-boyfriend Bradford (Tone Bell) will be there with his girlfriend of two years Margo (DeWanda Wise). They'll be joined by a guest at the hotel Aubrey (Y'lan Noel), who has just learned his long time live-in partner has broken up with him.

Thus, the movie, written and directed by Stella Meghie, will focus on the interpersonal relations between the guests over one weekend. Unfortunately, I just found the dialogue here to be awkward, strained, and, at times, mean-spirited and I was not able to connect with most of the characters.

Overall, the actors here all have good screen presence and I liked the eclectic soundtrack, but, for me, it was just not very entertaining.

Solid movie

I like the movie, but the main character is a bit much at times. She is going for the awkward black girl thing but over does it. Borderline rude and childish.

Awkward

In my opinion, this movie was just ok. I really didn't understand the purpose of Zadie bringing/inviting her ex-boyfriend to the family's house (bed and breakfast). Zadie acted like a weird, immature child....which is very confusing. I'm not sure what was going on. Acting was mediocre at best. Just trash

Not really...

Warning: Spoilers
This movie just didn't get all the way there. It rattled on at times and then didn't go there enough during other times. You were kind of left hanging with the characters in terms of their relationships. I suppose Zadie ended up with Aubrey. Not sure tho...it's implied, but again just kinda hanging there.

If your high school drama club made a movie...

Watching this movie feels uncomfortable. The characters don't seem to have a genuine connection to one another and the story lines of each character don't seem to be well developed on screen. Most scenes are very predictable and while viewers can accurately guess what's to come, it plays out in a way that is like watching green actors read a script in front of a camera, which is unfortunate because these are good actors who've produced good work in other shows and movies. It's a mix of over acting for what the scene calls for, unrealistic and underwhelming dialogue, and poor plot development.

Terrible
guswriter472 August 2020
This movie was horrible. The protagonist was boring, not funny and dressed worse than her status. She was a waste of time. The scenery was wonderful. I wasted 30 minutes of my life watching this movie. I can't reclaim my life but I can write this review in hopes no one else will make the same mistake. Remember the hero's journey

Had potential but was underdeveloped

Warning: Spoilers
I just didn't find it funny. Main female lead was rude and immature. Dewanda Wise was gorgeous and skillful as always, rounding out her character as best she could with a flat script. B-story about the parents' separation didn't fly. It was too long and yet, so little happened.

Good Movie
meyerstiffany-0744720 August 2020
The acting was awesome! I loved the funny parts and the overall concept was good & interesting. If you know anything about a break-up, then you will understand and relate to this movie. Nice twist, turning something normally bad into a good ending.

The main actor was just doing too much. Just rude and sarcastic and generally the plot was blah like what kind of situation was this? I should have known from the beginning how bad her as a comedian was but I struggled though this movie only good thing was the eye candy that is Y'lan.

So bad
neoaztlan-144332 December 2022
Premise is implausible. Everything after the first 10 minutes is awkward and borders on a train wreck. Why would anyone who is jilted want to take a road trip with the person who took their place?

"Man, that is amazing and pathetic. It kinda turns me on," is a line in the film and pretty much describes the whole film.

It's a college project that means well, but just doesn't execute except for those who are morbidly curious. I qualify for this.

Writer should write some more and actors are great and keep working.

Blaming this on whomever decided to greenlight and pay for it.

Movie is just bad.

Short and Sweet

Warning: Spoilers
I liked this movie. I think some reviews are a little harsh. It was awkward at times, but that's how it was supposed to be. The relationship dynamics were complicated and kept me on my toes throughout. The whole time you're rooting for Zadie, even though she can be a bit unlikeable. She's just going through a hard time. She definitely had some growth, and it paid off in the ending. I was glad she didn't end up with her ex and finally moved on. It's good to see a complicated female character on screen. It's always nice to see Sasheer Zamata as well. Overall, an enjoyable movie. I'd like to check out other movies by this director.

Only for the Eye Candy

Warning: Spoilers
Super awkward to watch at every point in the movie. I physically cringed watching this, especially with my significant other. The plot and concept was typical and far from unique except for the lead being undesirable yet desired by two men who could do better, especially when another beautiful, and classy women who knows how to act and not be awkward. It made me question and also be be confused the entire time of why two handsome and great men are vying after a rude, immature and awkward female who doesn't know how to properly act. The movie gave no answer or any explanation as to what made her do desired by these men when the whole time the audience is being continuously pushed away from liking her.

Moves slow in the beginning, but picks up as it goes on. Really insightful exploration of romance and the human condition
Although I'm not a fan of the genre, I will make an exception for black romantic comedies. As an African American woman, I find them to be much more relatable than romantic comedies with a predominantly or all white cast. I do believe black women, and black people in general, have different experiences with dating compared to people who aren't black. I have no desire to find a partner. I'm typically attracted to men outside of my race, and considering the hateful climate we're living in, I'm not comfortable dating. I hope society improves in the coming years, but as for right now, I'm happy being single.

I came across The Weekend on the channel Bounce. The story revolves around the life of Zadie (Sasheer Zamata), a stand-up comedian in her late 20s who goes to her parent's bed and breakfast for vacation. Joining her is Bradford, (Tone Bell), her ex-boyfriend, and his girlfriend Margo (DeWanda Wise). There's also a third guest named Aubrey (Y'lan Noel). The film doesn't exactly have laugh out loud moments. Zadie's sense of humor is cringe, and she tells her jokes at the most inappropriate of times. She's the type of person who makes people feel uneasy at social gatherings. If cringey dialogue is your thing, then you'll enjoy her lines. But I found the movie entertaining more so for how it analyzed the issues people have within both romantic and family relationships. Not only is Zadie having to deal with the presence of Bradford and Margo, in addition to falling for Aubrey, but she also has to face her parent's impending divorce (her mom is played by Kym Whitley. Her father is never shown). And she realizes that she's not mature enough to handle any of the challenges that come with adulthood.

The pacing was slow, but it picks up midway through. As silly as this might sound, I loved seeing black people out in a rural setting. If you think about it, it's not common to see films that have black characters hiking or riding bikes on a trail. The dialogue was lame at times, but overall, I felt like everybody was realistic. Love is complicated, and the script writing, as well as the acting, portrayed its complexity really well. Even if you find yourself bored in the beginning, you have to stick with it, because trust me, the speed of the film does increase, and the characters' inner struggles becomes interesting. It's a great movie if you don't like the typical Hollywood rom coms.

Confused
travonnewiggins27 August 2021
So... not sure what I watched or why 2 men were competing over being with a toxic black female? Some how we moved from angry black female to cruel and "mildly bipolar" with no filter?

Sheesh.

So awkwardly wonderfully good

Loved this so much. The lead comedian is like a box of hidden razor blades. She was amazing in the role. Hard to watch at times, refreshingly honest. Effervescent. Such a delight the whole way through. I'm keeping my eye on her.

Funny! Fresh premise. Orginal . Should be a classic
Cowtownus17 June 2021
This is fresh take on a rom com. The setting is different. The storyline is unusual. The lead actress Sasheer is funny. The directiing wag good. The soundtrack was wonderful. It was not your typical "black rom com". Ther is no hip hop in thissi movie. This should be a classic I laughed the whole way. I can't wait for the director to make another one.
