Sex & Nudity

  • All the three sex scenes in the film are short but one of them includes the aftermath where they are lying down next to each other after fully nude, no genitalia shown.
  • A female is seen bouncing on Leslie Odom Jr's character with a full bare back. After they are seen exhausted fully nude with breasts visible for a brief time, but the male organ is not shown.
  • A couple discuss what position they should do in sex while in bed together facing towards each other.
  • Two characters do a quickie in a public bathroom. The woman's legs are seen open widely (no nudity as she is covered by the man) while the man kisses and thrusts with buttocks briefly visible of the man. (under 8 seconds)
  • There are three sex scenes In total, int the first one a woman's breasts are seen for a prolonged time, but no male nudity.
  • Junior tries to have sex with his girlfriend. He is on top of her trying to thrust into her, but can't because he is in severe pain. No nudity.
  • Dickie hears his father and step mother having sex through the wall. It is not shown only heard and doesn't last long

Violence & Gore

  • A man is tortured by having a drill forced into his mouth. Blood, flesh and teeth/teeth fragments fly everywhere. Particularly graphic.
  • Several scenes of violence that includes graphic depictions of wounds, scenes of torture, domestic abuse as well as characters getting set on fire at a riot.
  • A man kicks his wife down the stairs. She's clearly in pain but not severely injured; she's more shocked and upset than anything.
  • At least two unarmed men are murdered by police employees during a riot.
  • A man is shot twice in the back by police while fleeing. It's later revealed that he survived, albeit permanently disabled.
  • A lot of the deaths in this film are pretty dark.
  • A man is suddenly shot in the head by a shotgun. Brain matter is seen briefly.

Profanity

  • 79 instances of "fuck" (7 in a sexual context), 2 uses of "cunt," 22 uses of "shit" and 14 uses of "nigga" (said by white and black people) and 1 use of "cocksucker."

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Two men discuss drugs, describing how people will pay to stick their arm into a hole to be injected with 'smack'.
  • Frequent portrayals of alcohol and tobacco use in a recreational context
  • Infrequent crude references to drug trafficking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In a depiction of the 1967 Newark riots, an unarmed, young man is shot and killed by police. A woman (possibly a mother or wife) embraces his body and screams for help, sobbing.
  • A man is tortured by having a large drill placed into his mouth and turned on. Gore can clearly be seen. The build up is brief but intense. It is the most violent scene in the movie and amongst the most potentially upsetting.

Violence & Gore

  • A man drowns his girlfriend in the ocean after she confesses to sleeping with another man. It's the most prolonged murder in the film, bloodless but potentially upsetting.
  • The protagonist is shot in the back of the head and killed at the end of the film, with bloody detail. It's sudden, though not completely unexpected if you've seen The Sopranos.
  • The protagonist murders his father by punching him then smashing his head against a steering wheel repeatedly. There is blood all over the steering wheel and we see the gory wound on his head. His body is then set on fire.
