Sad but a feel good movie at the same time
droche-4996630 October 2018
This movie brings a lot of emotion. While you are sad that the mom died, you are happy to have her back but sad to know that she will be leaving again. But you feel the love, particularly as you see the boy grow up knowing he was loved by his mother.

Cried 5 times. Beautiful film
uberdonkey63 January 2019
So the story isn't anything amazing, and really the way it pulls your heart strings is a bit obvious, but the execution of the film and the boys acting is fantastic. I'm a 48 year old man who served in the military, and I cried 5 times during this film.

A great romantic/weepy film with a touching nostalgia showing tenderness, love and the difficulty of a man and his son coping with loss. Korean films are great, and this is one.of their good ones. Scenery and filming is beautiful and integral to the film.

Good enough
PennyReviews21 November 2018
This was an emotional movie, about a family who losses their mom and yet, miraculously, she appears again. The performances were great from all the actors and especially the kid, who was exeptional. The love story was cute and sweet as well. The whole fantasy element was well explained, so there were no plot holes in the story and the ending was original and realistic. So seven out of ten for this simple, yet powerful story.

Top 2'of 30 korean movies I watched since 2009
ranner-9350524 May 2018
SooAh was only gone for one year before she returned to her family., not many years as @Mrrcot thinks: maybe the explanation at the end was kind of fast, i grasp it fully on my second viewing. The chemistry between wife and husband picked up soon enough and gather momentum. Didn't they kiss twice, n embrace twice - including once on bed with clothes on ? Soo Ah also portray young and active mum very well.

I watched 700 movies past 10 years at theaters (6 to 8 movies a month), and i rank Son Ye-Jin among top three actor, matched only by Emma Stone and Robert Downey Jr. There is plenty of great stuff that SYJ brings to any movie she made.

Enjoyable tale with a twist
Snootz2 July 2018
This is a wondrous little film, if a bit confusing. The summary is simple: a woman re-appears a year after her death without memory of her husband and child, who are the first to find her sitting alone near a railroad track. The movie unfolds to reveal the entire story, and is well worth watching.

To be enjoyed here are the actors, who do very good jobs of portraying their parts. Cliche? Hardly. The story is unique, the characters well-portrayed. The "penguin" scene is quite humorous. A perfect film? No. But it's a cut above typical love stories. Does it fall short in spots and leave the user scratching one's head at times? Yes. But it also brings laughter, appreciation, one significantly unexpected "wince" moment, and a few tears.

It is unfortunate that some are so jaded and demanding in their film watching that they can no longer enjoy a simple bit of story-telling.

For the romantics, for those who enjoy a decent story (if a bit odd), for those who appreciate a twist or two during the recounting of events, this is quite a nice experience. You may have to watch the ending twice to get the all-too-quick plot twist, but it's easy enough to hit replay. All in all, worth watching.

Excelent movie!
willians_franco19 June 2019
One of the best movies I've ever watched. Additionally, I venture to say that this remake is better than the Japanese original. The film's soundtrack added a good feeling to the film, reinforcing its emotional character. The actors played the roles well. I gave it a rating of 10 for it.

Dramatic and entertaining but can never surpass the Japanese version
ngtuanphongphof22 August 2021
Too much drama and too much touching moment is the problem. The Japanese version has slower pace and very peaceful with outstanding performances from the main characters, which builds up the ending so great. Smaller problem is the korean characters are always too good looking that I can never relate compare to japanese actors whose acting and appearances make me feel like they are living the same kind of life as me. Drama and entertaining but not as touching as the original.

The Japanese Original is Superior in Every Regard
geode5 July 2018
As with many other movies that are remade because the original worked so well, this remake fails to meet expectations. If I had encountered this Korean version first I most likely would have liked it better, but since this was not the case it was impossible to not do a comparison in my mind as I watched it and found it quite wanting. The Japanese version is superior in every regard, acting, direction, cinematography, and the writing.

Although several minutes longer than the original, this version has a simplified story line and really doesn't develop any secondary characters much except a new one, an over-the-top comic uncle. Actually, although there were a few comic moments in the original they came about naturally and were at times subtle. This was especially the case in the comparison of the accounts of the leading characters when they encountered each other at school. In this new one the comedy is anything but subtle and is at times essentially slapstick. The young Woo-jin character is made so much a clumsy nerd that in some scenes he belongs more in a Three Stooges comedy. In the original his social awkwardness stems more from his coping with illness. His illness is central to the plot, but with the exception of a moment or two in this new version, the illness seems barely present at all leaving motivations that drive decisions illogical and not natural.

The secondary characters such as the wise doctor, a caring co-worker, a baker, and the teacher at school all added considerable richness in the Japanese film that is sorely lacking in this one.

I am tempted to say that the director is inept, but I think perhaps it is more fair to say that his approach in this movie is awkward and lacking in style. He doesn't manage to introduce much depth to the story or characters so ultimately his version is far less touching than the original. A key scene at the end of the rainy season is now barely there, but was an emotional highlight in the Japanese film.

The characters are far more believable in the first film, the remake failing to come close in comparison. I think the actors, director, and screenwriter share blame for this. In particular I found Ye-jin Son's performance flat and not conveying the emotional core necessary to make her character's choices make sense and carry impact. I am tempted to think she was only cast because of her being cute and having a stunning figure.

The Japanese film took advantage of interesting location shooting, in a field of sunflowers and at a local festival. The cultural touches added richness and provided a nice backdrop to the scenes, adding visual interest as well. The Korean version is shot in a "matter of fact" style they could be in virtually any number of places.

In conclusion the original is far better nuanced, making it far more believable, involving, and touching. In watching this new one I found a tear or two coming to my eyes, but realized these were coming due to remembering the same scene in the original film, not the one I was watching.

For those who have not seen either movie I would suggest seeking out the Japanese version first. For those who liked the Korean version I strongly recommend watching the first version as it most likely will deliver what was liked in this one, but in an even greater measure.

Really Touching and Perfectly Projected Emotion
ferditiusbernard14 June 2018
From the synopsis, I had imagined how the plot was gonna be before watching this movie. But seeing other reviews quite drove me to give it a try, and it delivered content feeling for me after watching it.

Totally recommended, whether the plot is quite clear, but how each conversation and emotion being delivered were the most reasonable things how this movie turned out really great.

personally for me, this movie gave me precious perspective about giving love to someone you really adore.

Some very good moments - be patient
phd_travel30 March 2020
There are 2 good parts of this movie that make it worth watching. Be patient and watch it to the end. It may seem slow in the middle but there is a reward. The ending has an unexpected twist that is good and there is a scene at the kid's school when they are on stage that is very moving and unexpected. I found the premise a bit hard to accept. The acting is fine. Son Ye Jin is lovely as always. The kid is cute. So Ji Sub doesn't have the kind of face that seems right for this kind of romantic drama but he acts well enough.

mailtaskservice30 April 2022
Some quite sad moments especially its sad at the near end. The story is so so, not having special story, ordinary.

I only can give 7.3/10 because I expect better story and unlike all those ordinary stories.

So Emotional and Deep
wijdanay25 December 2018
Be With You tells the story of father and son who must live in sadness after the death of the mother figure in the family. They live in a mess. The father is busy working and cannot take care of his child properly. All the time they only dream of miracles happening.

This shows how important the role of mothers in the family. Although many people underestimate housewives, not many are able to manage their families as well as a mother does. Jobs such as cooking, washing, and educating children are extraordinary things that cannot be done by anyone.

Not a Good Remake
yiuleungf20 September 2021
It's overrated. It's no where as good as the original 2004 Japanese classic. Music, story execution, cinematography ...etc all downgraded by much.
