Perhaps it's because "Tips" was the very first episode of Apple&Onion I ever saw, and I've loved the show since, but it's still one of the best. The central theme of helping others begins simply as a way to raise funds for a hot-air balloon ride but it culminates with one of the sweetest gestures our grocery bros have mustered in the series since. There's an infectious optimism and eccentric humor to the whole affair even as the duo fall flat on their faces trying to please customers at their favorite diner.
Of particular note is the very catchy little ditties our boys sing, such as 'Today', which lends a lot of positive energy to scenes whenever they reprise it. The titular "Tips" song explains well how Apple and Onion operate within their own little world but always with the goal to help others (as we find out, sometimes to a fault). It is from these interactions with the customers that we also realize just how weird their whole world is, but moreso how the boys stick out in it.
Special attention was also paid by the writers to uniquely shape the personalities of the pair with their very odd and childish manner of speaking around each other, such as using the word 'True' to mean 'I agree' when they inquire about "What is tips?" One of the best sight gags is also present, when the boys are waiting on the Cookie Couple by somehow, in a very unsettling way, merging into the far wall momentarily, just long enough for the audience to do a double take when they realize the absurdity of what's being presented.
Apple and Onion is a slick, refreshing balance of a hearty glass-full approach to the coming of age tropes and a healthy dose of fourth wall breakage and 'wicked' beats, and "Tips" is like the perfect example of the show's unique message.
