U.S. audiences tend to accept Toho's earlier Godzilla movies as being high camp, usually thanks to Gen-x's half-remembered airings of late-'60s kaiju flicks broadcast on Uhf TV channels back in the 1980s. While there are some absurd and terrible Godzilla films from the Showa era (1954-1975), and many of them contained surreal, kitschy plot elements like invading aliens, one might also find several movies -- "Gojira," "Destroy All Monsters" -- that focus on Japanese national pride, the role of destructive weapons in the world, and a barely-simmering resentment lingering after a massive attack on the country. If modern superhero movies sprung from the U.S. subconscious as a fantastical revenge/preventative measure against 9/11, so too did Godzilla spring fully formed from the trauma left behind by the U.S.' atomic bomb attacks.
In the original "Gojira," that is literal. The titular creature, a stories-high amphibious animal,...

While international collaborations between animation companies is not new, more of these cross-global deals involving IP are being inked. Lion Forge recently teamed with China’s Starlight Entertainment to develop animated features and other content, while Saudi Arabia’s Manga is working closely with Japan’s animation giant Toei on projects.
Starlight Entertainment, headed by cinefile Peter Luo, invested in “Crazy Rich Asians” and has gone on to ink deals with an array of talent including Roland Emmerich, F. Gary Gray and Jon M Chu.
It sees an opportunity with animation, and Lion Forge is Black-owned with IP that celebrates diversity — and it won an Oscar for animated short “Hair Love,” directed and written by Matthew Cherry, earlier this year.
Lion Forge Animation is run by CEO David Steward II and president Carl Reed, who, through the Starlight deal, have access to the Chinese market. And Starlight has access to the world through Lion Forge.

The ambitious, nihilistic Godzilla anime trilogy comes to a close with its grandest entry that may frustrate some, but feels fitting.
Movies
Godzilla is such a fascinating property because he’s been around for over six decades and is arguably a larger cinematic icon than James Bond. The beast has gone through a number of reinventions over the years, but the most interesting of these facelifts have taken place in more recent years. Filmmakers have gone out of their way to deliver movies that aren’t your standard action-packed Godzilla endeavors.
After some of the more progressive, ambitious takes on the character, such as Shin Godzilla or Gareth Edwards’ reimagining of the franchise, the character is allowed to be more of a cipher that can hint at heavier issues. Yes, Netflix's Godzilla anime trilogy is about giant monsters that engage in all-out combat with the fate of a planet at stake,...

Set for a release in Japan next month (with a Netflix release across the rest of the world to follow as per the previous films), here’s the trailer and poster for Toho Animation’s latest animated Godzilla film, Godzilla: The Planet Eater, the third and final installment in their animated trilogy (read our review of Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle here).
The human race is on the brink of oblivion. The “wings of its demise” descend before its eyes. This is the concluding chapter of the animated feature film series, Godzilla (aka “Anigoji”). 20,000 years into the future, the Earth is ruled by Godzilla. Pitted against him are the straggling remnants of the human race. The final chapter, Godzilla: The Planet Eater, finds the Mechagodzilla city, the peak of scientific evolution and mankind’s best hope, burned to cinders. Godzilla Earth reigns supreme but he has one more challenge: the winged creature,...

The anime version of Godzilla continues from where the first part ended, although this time, the non-Godzilla, non-battle aspect seems to be much improved. Let us take things from the beginning though.
Following the events of “Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters“, the Aratrum is unable to contact Haruo and the rest of the forces, after their encounter with the original Godzilla. The Captain orders that if drones do not find survivors by forty-eight hours, the Aratrum will withdraw from Earth. On the surface of the planet, Haruo and his companions make contact with the indigenous Houtua tribe, who, after a “to-know-us-better” that involves much violence, introduce themselves at their full glory, and even agree to help the “crusaders” in their effort to kill Godzilla.
Furthermore, in a search for nanometal instigated by Galu-gu, they discover the remains of Mechagodzilla, who has actually transformed into a city Galu-Gu dubs as “Mechagodzilla City”. Using nanometal technology,...

In my last column, I offered up my two-pronged solution to the frequent complaint about Netflix that their flood of new series all have too many episodes that are all too long, suggesting that viewers either try another streaming service or watch shorter shows with fewer episodes. Having written that, I decided to follow my own advice and watched Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, released in Japanese theaters on May 18, 2018, and then on Netflix globally on July 18, followed by Blame!, a very likable series that was actually released globally by Netflix last year. And I've just started watching Banana Fish, an anime series that is now airing on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block in Japan on a normal broadcast schedule...

Limited resources, depleted forces, a commander with nowhere to run except a city… on the edge of battle.
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle is the second part of Toho Animation’s Netflix-produced anime trilogy which directly follows the events of Planet of the Monsters which released earlier this year in January.
Shortly after Haruo and his newly acquired army defeat what they believe is the only threat on Earth, Godzilla Filius, a new threat emerges in the form of the largest Godzilla in the Kaiju’s famous history, Godzilla Earth, which stands at an incredible 300 meters tall. After succumbing to Godzilla’s mighty heat ray, Haruo is separated from the rest of the remaining humans and is saved from certain doom but a young member of the Houtua clan, a group of sub humans who have managed to survive and evolve in the 20,000 year future that this...

There's a lot of focus on Warner Bros.' Godzilla: King of Monsters since footage is expected to debut at Comic-Con, but Netflix has just released Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, the sequel to last year's animated feature Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. The new movie picks up where "Planet of the Monsters" left off, with Haruo and his team looking for a way to defeat the largest Godzilla we've seen to date. This time, they put their hope in the abandoned Mechagodzilla facility and have an unexpected encounter the indigenous Houtua tribe.
There's a surprising lack of Godzilla in "Planet of the Monsters," but I'm hoping they address that in the sequel. Either way, those looking for their Godzilla fix that haven't seen the first movie may want to give it a try to see a futuristic take on the Godzilla story. We've included the trailer below,...

Netflix is continuing its push into anime.
The streaming giant made several announcements as part of their Anime Expo panel on Thursday, chief among them being the premiere date for the highly-anticipated second season of “Castlevania.” The series, inspired by the classic videogame series of the same name, will launch its second season on Oct. 26.
In addition, Netflix has renewed “Aggretsuko” for a second season, which will debut in 2019. In the series, frustrated with her thankless office job, Retsuko the Red Panda copes with her daily struggles by belting out death metal karaoke after work.
Netflix also set the premiere date for the sequel “Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle.” The sequel to the 2017 film “Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters” will debut July 18. The film pits humans and robots against the biggest Godzilla ever seen in an interplanetary struggle for survival.
In other premiere date news, Netflix will begin airing “Dragon Pilot” on Sept.

Netflix’s cutest death-metal fan is returning for more face-melting good times. The streaming service announced Monday at Anime Expo it has renewed “Aggretsuko” for Season 2.
The charming anime series follows 25-year-old red panda Retsuko, who works an oppressive office job by day and vents her frustrations through death metal karaoke at night. The series examines micro-aggressions, sexism, and the pressures society puts on people to conform to a specific “good” person image.
In the Season 1 review, IndieWire noted, “As it stands, this delightful season is more like filling up on Costco samples than a more substantial series binge. That’s no doubt part of its charm. If Netflix sees fit to renew it for another season, however, there’s definitely an appetite for meatier fare.”

We've got a cool new trailer for Toho's upcoming sequel to Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. The sequel was previously known as Godzilla: The City Mechanized For Final Battle, but the new more Americanized title of the film is Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle. This movie looks like it's going to be filled with some epic action! I enjoyed the first film, so I'm pretty excited about this sequel!
In the sequel, the surviving pilots who came to Earth to take down Godzilla in the first film have now joined up with a mysterious group of humans who have been living on the planet. It's there that they learn that "the key to defeating the King of the Monsters may be Mechagodzilla, a robotic weapon thought to have been lost nearly 20,000 years ago."

“Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle” picks up where “Godzilla – Planet of the Monsters” left off. After suffering a crushing defeat at the claws of Godzilla Earth – the seemingly immortal, 300 meter tall, 100,000 ton incarnation of Godzilla who now rules the planet – Haruo Sakaki is rescued by Miana, a native girl who belongs to the “Futua” tribe, the descendants of humanity that were left behind on Earth during the initial evacuation.
Meanwhile, Galu Gu, the leader of the Bilusaludo forces, realizes that the arrowheads of the Futua are made of “nanometal”, the same material that was used to build Mechagodzilla, a super weapon that failed to curb Godzilla’s rampage and that was presumed destroyed in a battle at the foot of Mt. Fuji in the 21st Century.
