- Taking the leap out of the classic folklore, the story is set in today's time in Kashmir where Laila Majnu have problems relevant to the youth of today. While dealing with their feuding families a passionate love story unravels.
- Belonging to a reputed family in town, Laila (Triptii Dimri) is a flirt who likes to tease boys who are attracted to her. She meets Qais Bhatt (Avinash Tiwary), a boy belonging to a wealthy family.
Laila's family includes sister Ambreen (Sahiba Bali), Father Masood Ahmed Shahmiri (Parmeet Sethi), Mother Parveen (Sujata Sehgal) and others. Shama (Duaa Bhat) & Jasmeet (Farhana Bhat) are Laila's friend at school.
Qais is the son of father Ghulam Sarwar Bhat (Benjamin Gilani) who is a rich businessman of the region with deep political connections. Zaid (Abrar Qazi) is Qais' brother and his mother died 20 years ago. Qais has the reputation in town of being a flirt and an alcoholic. He is rumored to have dabbled in drugs and allegedly made a girl pregnant and abandoned her.
Laila notices that a jeep always escorts her car to and from school and all the boys have stopped following her. She gets expensive gifts left for her at school, and no shopkeeper would take money from her. Laila is unsure about Qais and tells him to not stalk her.
Sarwar has used his political connections to declare a patch of land as the Green Belt in a bid to acquire it. This land also includes the land owned by Masood. Nisar Bukhari (Zameer Ashai) heads a political party and asks Masood to fight elections to be able to stand up to Sarwar. Javed / Ibban is Nisar's party worker and assigned to Masood to help him politically.
Qais gives her a note that says that he will not bother her anymore and if she wants him, she has to reach out to him. The following day however, they end up crossing paths again at a wedding and Qais realizes it's destiny.
Despite ongoing legal disputes between their families, the two fall for each other. Qais is clear from the very beginning that he wants to marry Laila. One day they notice Ibban following them in his car. Laila is mortified that she would be humiliated in town. Qais arranges things in a way that he replaces Laila with his sister (Vasundhara Kaul) without Ibban knowing and then confronts Ibban publicly.
Qais convinces his father to take a wedding proposal to Masood for Laila. Masood insults Sarwar and says that he will never wed his daughter to a family of thieves and specifically Qais, whom he considers a flirt.
When Laila's family finds out about their relationship, they fix her wedding with Ibban (Sumit Kaul), her father's political assistant. She is forced to wed when her father threatens to drink poison if she doesn't comply to marry. However, Laila is still hopeful that Qais will convince her father. But she hears a part of their conversation (after Masood and Ibban had repeatedly insulted Qais) and breaks up with him reluctantly, assuming he was speaking disrespectfully to her father. Qais, hurt by the misunderstanding, tells her again that he would not follow her anymore and asks her to find him if she ever needs him.
After four years, Qais returns from London for his father's funeral who dies of a heart attack. He avoids meeting Laila. Laila, who is regularly abused by her alcoholic husband, the new MLA (who now lives with Masood as a house husband), decides to meet Qais. When she sees him, she realizes that their break-up affected him terribly and that he was struggling with his mental health. He seemed like a different person to her at odd moments. Qais was so troubled by the memories that he would often retreat into the mountains and stay there until he was found by his friends and brought back to civilization.
Laila stands up to her husband and they decide to get divorced. Masood also supports Laila as Ibban was frequently abusing Laila physically. Laila threatens Ibban with public humiliation if he does not amicably grant the divorce. Qais wants to run away with Laila, when she goes to meet him. Laila asks Qais to wait till her divorce. However, before the divorce, her husband dies in a road accident. Laila decides to run away with Qais on the day of the funeral, but her father asks her not to and promises her that she can marry him after a few weeks. Masood says that even though Laila has every right to run away, but he still has to live in the city among the people and has to abide by their rules. Laila again asks Qais to wait for her.
Qais, who had been waiting for her for years, feels that he will never be united with her and this thought makes him eccentric. He begins to hallucinate about Laila, he talks to her and eventually runs off to a mountain. His family, friends and Laila search for him for days but are unable to find him. Qais however hallucinates Laila to be with him and starts a life with her in the mountains. He is caught by some people and is brought back to his house. There, he recognizes Laila but also says that Laila is not one person, but she is everywhere and points to different directions.
Laila concludes that he has reached an ultimate state of love. She announces that in order for them to be together their souls need to meet. Then, while holding the note he had given her in the beginning of their relationship, she dies. The note said she has to reach him if she wants him, indicating Laila had started a journey to reach him again.
Qais (referred to as Majnu, meaning "crazy" in Arabic language), realizing that Laila is no more, runs towards the mountains when he stumbles and hits his head over Laila's grave. As he takes his last breath, he sees Laila calling to him from the mountain top. It is shown that their souls are finally reunited, free to do everything that they had planned they would do together. "They lived happily ever after - which is both ironic and true".
