Abortion was formally banned in Canada in 1867. Abortion became permitted in some cases after the passage of the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1968-69. Then in 1988, Canada's Supreme Court struck down that law for violating a woman's right to "life, liberty and security of the person" under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. Since then, abortion has been legal in Canada, and in 2021 Canada remains the only nation with no legal restrictions on abortion.
