Lacklustre

I am really struggling with this series. I appreciate the show was not designed to be binge-watched over the course of 3 weeks but, compared to earlier series, this one does seem tired, lacking action and most pedestrian.

Maybe the actors have had enough or the writer is out of ideas but, despite the big names on screen and this episode being directed by Sue (formerly Susan) Tully, the show really isn't grabbing me.

I am arching this at a time when series 6 is being heavily hyped. I hope the hype us deserved because this does seem a bit of an effort to watch.

Hopefully, the 94 minute finale to the series won't be dragged out.

Sets up the finale well

Hastings finds himself under intense suspicion.

This is a solid episode with some excellent performances.

The plot uses the tried and tested dramatic formula of a favourite character in trouble. Despite certain contrivances that all seem to fall perfectly to make a certain character look guilty, it does a great job of setting up the series 5 finale by making you want to find out how it turns out. I cannot say much else with spoiling.

All performances are excellent as always and some new faces mix in well with the regular cast during the investigation scenes.

For me it's a 7.5/10, but I round upwards.

Even better then the previous episode.

I thought Part 4 had been the highlight in what's been another excellent series, but as is so often the case, the penultimate episode proves to be the standout.

It's always superbly acted, buy introducing the talent of Anna Maxwell Martin, was a blinder, she didn't get a huge deal of screen time, but she was Intensely effective, and has managed to add a new dimension as to the identity of H.

I loved the references to the past, those references to the first series were terrific, particularly for long standing fans.

As always there's an agony in waiting for the solution. 10/10

dang it

I love the show but im getting tired of this "frame somebody, try to prove he is innocent" storyline in EVERY SINGLE SEASON. I saw that coming from a mile away. Other than that episode was really good. Lets see if the last episode tries to do something new or does it again go like this. Framejob gets deeper, but loyal coppers find something and cleares his name.

Episode 5.5

There are so many dangling plot threads that I sometimes wonder how does Jed Mercurio manage it all.

In Episode 4 there was a call back to series 1 with the appearance of the lad with Downs Syndrome (played by another actor) and Jackie Laverty's cut up body still in his freezer after all those years.

This one is all about H. With Corbett out of the way, the target it seems is Hastings.

When another officer arrives at AC-12 who is one rank above that of Hastings, we realise that the tables will be turned. It is Hastings in the other side of a police corruption interrogation.

It was a tense finish as I did think how Hastings going to survive this. I still think there is a lot to play for in the series 5 finale.
