Image
Exclusive: Tara Long, eOne’s President, Global Unscripted Television, is leaving the company after ten years.

Long’s departure comes after Lionsgate acquired the company from Hasbro.

Deadline understands that she is now in the process of setting up her own shop and is set to strike a deal with her former eOne boss John Morayniss and his Blink49 Studios.

Long joined eOne in 2012 and has shepherded unscripted series such as We tv’s Growing Up Hip Hop franchise, MTV’s Ex On The Beach and Siesta Key, E!’s LadyGang, BET’s Hustle in Brooklyn, Death Row Chronicles and Emmy-nominated LA Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later, A&e’s Biggie: The Life of Notorious B.I.G. and Gsn’s America Says.

Earlier this month, it emerged that Lionsgate was cutting eOne’s workforce by about 10% after the deal closed in August.

Morayniss, who ran eOne’s television business between 2008 and...

Tupac Murder Suspect to Face Trial Next Year
Image
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former street gang leader charged with the murder of Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas in 1996, will stand trial on June 3, a Nevada judge ruled on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

Davis was first arrested and charged with murder at the end of September, almost exactly 27 years after Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting. Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight, imprisoned in 2018 over an unrelated manslaughter conviction, was also in the car with Shakur and was wounded.

Police said that Davis wasn...

Why Tupac’s Alleged Killer Could Be Caught in a Legal ‘Catch-22’
Image
Since the arrest and indictment of Duane “Keffe D” Davis for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, people have speculated about whether the Los Angeles Police Department will be reinvigorated to pursue an investigation into the other great tragedy of that era in hip-hop — the 1997 murder of the Notorious B.I.G. But former LAPD detective Greg Kading, who was the lead detective of an interagency task force created in 2006 to investigate Biggie’s murder, tells Rolling Stone that he feels the murder was likely the result of a smaller conspiracy that would...

Allen Hughes on the Arrest in Tupac Shakur’s Murder: ‘What Took So Long?’
Image
On Friday, September 29, when Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested and charged with murdering Tupac Shakur (after 27 years), Dear Mama director Allen Hughes deemed it “the conclusion anyone in the know thought would come someday.”

“For whatever reason, it sounds like [Davis] told the truth,” Hughes told Rolling Stone over the phone Friday after Davis’ arrest. “He’s been telling the truth. The culture was listening. Hip-hop was listening. The streets were listening. But law enforcement, unfortunately, it took a while for them.”

It took Las Vegas Metro Police Department 27 years to charge Davis,...

Tupac Doc Filmmakers Including Allen Hughes React To Murder Charge: “A Great Day For The Family”
Image
Duane Davis, a former gang member known as Keffe D, was indicted on one count of murder with a deadly weapon by a Nevada grand jury Friday.

The victim: Tupac Shakur.

It’s a case that has made national headlines since 1996 when it took place and has been the subject of a multitude of documentaries and scripted projects.

Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur, directed by Allen Hughes, one-time friend and one-time foe of Tupac’s, was the most high-profile recent series, having premiered in April. The series focuses on Tupac’s relationship with his mother Afeni, a Black Panther activist, rather than his death.

Hughes told Deadline that today was a “great day for the family.”

He revealed that when he was pitching the project around Hollywood, he had a different subtitle: This Is Not A Murder Investigation.

“[Dear Mama] was very matter of fact, very frank about what happened.

Tupac Shakur Murder: Suspect’s Own Words ‘Reinvigorated’ Case in 2018
Image
Duane “Keffe D” Davis‘ own words to the press — and in his memoir — “reinvigorated” the Tupac Shakur’s murder case five years ago, Las Vegas police said in a press conference Friday. Davis was charged with one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon, with a gang enhancement.

“Davis was the shot-caller for this group of individuals that committed this crime, and he orchestrated the plan that was carried out,” Sheriff Kevin McMahill said Friday, adding that it took “decades” to get to the bottom of the 27-year-old case.

Man Charged With Murder in Connection to Tupac Shakur’s Killing
Image
A Las Vegas man was arrested and charged Friday in connection to the fatal drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur in 1996. Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested Friday morning. He has officially been charged with murder with use of a deadly weapon.

A Nevada grand jury indicted Davis in the killing, prosecutors announced in court Friday. Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc Digiacomo called Davis the “on-ground, on-site commander” who “ordered the death” of Shakur.

Back in July, Las Vegas police revealed that they had searched Davis’ home in connection with the investigation of Shakur’s murder.

Las Vegas Police Say Bet Interview Spurs New Look At Tupac Shakur Murder Case
A Bet documentary that featured an interview with the uncle of a onetime person of interest in Tupac Shakur’s 1996 drive-by murder has resulted in a renewed look at the homicide by Las Vegas police.

In an interview that aired in February on the docuseries Death Row Chronicles, Keffe D (aka Duane Keith Davis) said he was in the front seat when someone in the back seat opened fire on a car carrying Shakur and Suge Knight on September 7, 1996 the Las Vegas Strip, killing Shakur at age 25.

Davis’ cousin, Orlando Anderson, was one of the men identified as being in the back seat of the car that shot at Shakur, who was hit four times and later died at a local hospital. Anderson, a member of the Southside Crips and a a person of interest in the murder investigation, was shot and killed in a gang fight in 1998.

Tupac Shakur in Tupac: Resurrection (2003)
Tupac Murder Case: Las Vegas Police Reject ‘Inaccurate’ Reports of Imminent Arrest
Tupac Shakur in Tupac: Resurrection (2003)
No, there’s not about to be an arrest in the cold case from the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, Las Vegas police told TheWrap.

“We are aware of the statements made in the BET interview regarding the Tupac case. As a result of those statements we have spent the last several months reviewing the case in its entirety,” Lt. Ray Spencer, who heads up the Lvmpd Homicide Section, told TheWrap in a statement Thursday. “Various reports that an arrest warrant is about to be submitted are inaccurate. This case still remains an open homicide case.”

So what is this interview they are referencing that has led the Lvmpd to review the case “in its entirety” over the last few months? Well, there was an episode of BET's “Death Row Chronicles” docuseries that aired in February and featured interviews with Keffe D — a Southside Crips member and the late...

‘Unsolved’ Creator Finds It ‘Outrageous’ That Keffe D Isn’t in Jail ‘Right Now’ for Tupac’s Murder
Tonight, Season 1 of USA Network’s scripted true crime series “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.” will end with an episode titled “Unsolved?” That sounds about right for creator Kyle Long, who believes it is actually pretty obvious what happened here. At least in the case of the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur.

“I would say, in regards to the Tupac murder, I think it’s — you know — very clear what happened,” Long told TheWrap in an interview last week. “There’s elements of it that are questionable, but certainly Keffe D and the Southside Crips killed Tupac Shakur. And it is outrageous that Keffe D is not in jail. And that should be in the article.”

“In the [‘Unsolved’] finale, when you see why the whole Keffe D thing, how he had immunity and that — long story short, in real life and in the television show, he had immunity to make this confession to the task force,” Long said of the Southside Crips member and the late Orlando Anderson’s uncle, real name Duane Keith Davis. “When the task force fell apart he still had immunity.”

“But this guy, this year — no one is talking about this, but I guess people just don’t care about Tupac Shakur, a young black man — he, this guy goes on a documentary this year and tells a version of the same story, he tries to go all cute and say, ‘I don’t know who triggered there,'” Long said. “But he talked about being in the car with the Crips, they specifically went to hunt [Tupac] down and then Tupac gets shot, you just have to say who pulled the trigger.”

However, Long says it ultimately “doesn’t matter that he doesn’t say who pulled the trigger.”

“He went live on television and confessed to being an accessory to murder and the Las Vegas Pd, as far as I know, is doing nothing about it,” Long continued. “And I just think it’s outrageous. I just don’t understand it. It makes me upset. And it’s just crazy town to me. It is so wild that a guy can — and I don’t know what kind of lawyer he has telling him to go on this television show and talk about it, but you know, it’s crazy. So that’s my rant about Keffe D and the Tupac murder, like to me, that murder, you could go arrest someone for that right now.”

Long is referencing an episode of Bet’s “Death Row Chronicles” docuseries which aired in February and featured interviews with Davis and former Lapd detective Greg Kading about Shakur’s murder.

Kading, who wrote the book “Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls & Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations,” is one of the key characters in the show “Unsolved” (played by Josh Duhamel), as he led investigations into the murders of Shakur and Christopher Wallace aka Biggie Smalls. He is also a co-executive producer on the USA series.

Multiple attempts by TheWrap to reach Davis for comment for this story were unsuccessful. All phone calls made to numbers associated with Davis went unreturned or led to disconnected lines. Emails sent to addresses associated with Davis and his relatives went unanswered. Both Bet and NBCUniversal did not have current contact information for Davis. Attempts to locate contact information for Davis through arrest records and to reach Wayne Higgins — an attorney who is listed in court documents as having previously represented Davis — were also unsuccessful.

“Unsolved” chronicles the stories of the police investigations led by Kading (Josh Duhamel) and Detective Russell Poole (Jimmi Simpson) into the murders of Tupac Shakur (Marcc Rose) and Biggie Smalls (Wavyy Jonez).

Long penned the script and executive produces along with director Anthony Hemingway (“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”) and Mark Taylor.

The season 1 finale of “Unsolved” airs Tuesday at 10/9 c on USA.

Pamela Chelin contributed to this story.
