Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Netflix has taken in for development an untitled drama from former A Million Little Things showrunner Terrence Coli, Rabbi and author Steve Leder and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, Deadline has learned.
Written by Coli, the untitled project is described as a spiritual procedural about a group of ancient humans who’ve been sent back to Earth with a Heavenly mission: to bring hope to those struggling in their darkest hour and healing to our fractured world.
Coli, Leder and Kaplan executive produce. Kevin Marco is the creative executive for Kapital Entertainment. A rep for Netflix declined comment.
Finding faith/spiritually-based scripted series has been a goal for Netflix, whose model is built on offering programming for every segment of its worldwide audience. As you might expect from the billing, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio — which had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival today — is a very different beast to the 1940 Disney animation, and just as cavalier with the picaresque elements of Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel. The factor that unifies all three is that the main character — a wooden puppet blessed with life — longs to be a real, human boy, but it’s no spoiler to reveal that del Toro, champion of monsters and misfits, doesn’t see the appeal of that.

The highly-anticipated third film in Lifetime's Harry & Meghan trilogy was the most buzzworthy one of them all.
Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace aired on Labor Day, and viewers can't stop talking about the film.
We had the pleasure of catching up with Prince Harry himself, star Jordan Dean, to discuss the humanity and consideration brought to this role, a multi-faceted Prince Harry, the royal appeal, and more.
Check it out below!
Congratulations on a successful premiere!
Thank you very much. Thanks, I appreciate it.
Jumping right into it, how did you get involved with this project, and what compelled you to take on this role?
When I got the audition for it, it was funny because I was moving at the time. It was during the pandemic, so I didn't even know if I would be able to audition for it.

The best days are definitely behind for Grey's Anatomy.
The once-hot medical drama has been suffering a ratings decline in its latest season, which could be attributed to the dark storylines at the wheel of the series.
Grey's Anatomy Season 17 Episode 9 had 4.88 million viewers and a 0.9 rating.
The total viewer tally marks the lowest numbers yet for the show, while the demo number matches last week's low.
Station 19 drew 5 million viewers and a 0.7 rating -- on par with its most recent episodes.
A Million Little Things closed off the night for ABC with 3.1 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.
The series is moving to its old timeslot to be replaced by Rebel, giving Krista Vernoff a full-night of programming on the network.
Given the trajectory of the ratings for Grey's, it will hardly be a solid launching pad for the show.
Over on Fox, Hell's Kitchen (2.7 million/0.8 rating) was steady, but...

Actor Dave Bautista is tackling a challenge that his Guardians of the Galaxy character, former intergalactic criminal Drax the Destroyer, could never handle: a precocious 9-year-old girl.
In My Spy - directed by Get Smart's Peter Segal - the former WWE champion plays Jj, a hardened CIA operative whose preference to blow up things now and ask questions later, has led to his demotion. His new assignment sends him undercover to watch the family of 9-year-old Sophie (Chloe Coleman), who discovers Jj's operation using her own tech savvy. In exchange for Sophie not exposing Jj's cover, she convinces him to teach her to be a spy. Though he's virtually at the mercy of a young child, Jj quickly finds that he's no match for Sophie's brain and wit, and the two find themselves getting attached to one another.

As the cable portion of the Television Critics Assn. press tour continued, A&E looked ahead about a year to the next season of “Knightfall,” while Epix brought two big dramas set to premiere in the summer of 2019: “Pennyworth,” based on DC Comics characters, and the Ben Kingsley starrer “Perpetual Grace, Ltd.” Lifetime brought together the female directors of a number of their original movies for a rare peak behind the curtain, and National Geographic ended the day with a combination of factual programming such as the feature documentary “Science Fair” and Bear Grylls’ “Hostile Planet” and fiction, with the limited series adaptation of “The Hot Zone,” starring Julianna Margulies.
Here, Variety breaks down five things learned during TCA Day 13.

ReFrame and IMDbPro have awarded 62 television and streaming series their first-ever ReFrame Stamp for Television, Variety has learned exclusively.
The ReFrame Stamp was created by ReFrame, a coalition of industry professionals founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute, to recognize projects that have demonstrated success in gender-balanced hiring. Productions that receive the stamp are those that hire female-identifying people in four out of eight critical areas of production, including writing, directing, showrunning, producing, lead acting roles, season regular acting roles, department heads and crew members. Those series must reflect diversity across all of the season, not just specific episodes. The data was collected with IMDbPro.
The inaugural round of recipients include all five of Shonda Rhimes’ shows, Frankie Shaw’s “Smilf,” Issa Rae’s “Insecure,” Tanya Saracho’s “Vida,” “Broad City” from Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” among others. Over...

Meghan Markle may have retired from acting, but she could still get an Emmy nomination. The newly minted Duchess of Sussex is on the Emmy nominating ballot for Best Drama Supporting Actress for “Suits.”
Markle had played Rachel Zane on the USA legal drama since its inception in 2011, before leaving this spring in the Season 7 finale, along with her onscreen hubby Patrick J. Adams. She quit acting in November when her engagement to Prince Harry was announced.
Now, before you think this is her last gasp for recognition for her former career, it’s highly unlikely she submitted herself or even knows about this, let alone care. USA has always submitted the entire main cast of “Suits” and did so again this year. Are Tptb hoping the publicity it got from one of its stars marrying into the royal family will compel voters to check off the show or Markle?...

The guy who played Prince William in Lifetime's "Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance" says even he was surprised when he wasn't given a prosthetic to play the future king of England. We spoke to actor Burgess Abernethy about his role in the TV movie, which was met with a ton of criticism because a lot of viewers didn't think he looked anything like the real Wills -- and turns out, Burgess didn't think so either.

Although it feels like all eyes will be on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday for their royal wedding, not everyone is a follower of the Royal Family and their every move. When actress Parisa Fitz-Henley got cast in Lifetime’s “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance” Lifetime movie, she had to take a crash course to play Markle, the actress and humanitarian activist who will be joining the House of Windsor.
“I started learning about her when I got the audition … but I saw the engagement video after a lot of people were responding to it,” Fitz-Henley said in an interview with IndieWire. “I’m not a royal watcher. I try not to be in other people’s business if I can, and so it was interesting to me to see the kind of people whose interest was piqued by this. So I said, ‘Let me just take a watch.

It wouldn't be a royal wedding without Lifetime rewriting the love affair between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, creating the slightly malformed monster, Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance. And if a royal wedding Lifetime movie doesn't get a recap, did it even happen at all? ...it did happen. I sat through all 2 hours and 22 minutes of it. And while the retelling of Harry and Meghan's relationship hurdles and engagement isn't the worst Lifetime flick ever (that esteemed title goes to The Pregnancy Pact) it does try to sell us on some pretty incredulous things, sandwiched within some deeply uncomfortable subject matter. Painstakingly recorded for your amusement, here's what happened in Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance. Flashback: Harry and Meghan as youths. We open on picturesque African Plains where an intelligible young Gingersnap and his intelligible babely brother are mourning the loss of their mother. Oh, to flashback within a flashback,...

The story of how a prince fell in love with an actor is brought to life in a guilty pleasure – a cliche-packed TV movie that is as sweet as it is silly
On her first blind date with Prince Harry (Murray Fraser), Meghan Markle (Parisa Fitz-Henley) downs a dirty martini, forces the fifth – now sixth – heir to the British throne to grovel for being late, and admits her feel-good flick is Love Actually. His is The Lion King, and if you mix their favorites together with a stiff pour of violins and a tabloid swizzle-stick, the concoction would be Menhaj Huda’s highly quotable Lifetime movie Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance, a brain-numbing charmer best consumed in a group, or guiltily alone.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the end of “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance.” A non-spoilery review is also available on IndieWire.]
Admittedly, information on historical figures can’t necessarily be spoiled in the traditional sense when it comes to movies and TV. But in the case of the Lifetime movie “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance,” its portrayal of the royal couple hews so closely to reality that some scenes that take storytelling license may be mistaken for fact.
This is the case later in the movie when actress and women’s rights activist Meghan Markle (Parisa Fitz-Henley) finally gets invited by her fiancé Prince Harry (Murray Fraser) to meet his gran, aka Queen Elizabeth II (Maggie Sullivun). After drinking tea and petting corgis, the Queen takes them to look at a portrait of Queen Charlotte.

In Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Lifetime found the perfect couple to blend what the channel does best: pop culture biopics and happily ever after rom-coms. Not since six years ago with Prince William and so-called “commoner” Kate Middleton has such a ripe, real-life story presented itself for adaptation. In the case of the new couple, however, specific details about Markle’s identity add narrative spice to the princess fairy tale: She is a divorced American actress who happens to be biracial.
All of those points are brought up in “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance,” a brisk and diverting two-plus hours that captures the imagined flavor of the couple’s whirlwind romance with wit and a refreshing amount of candidness about socio-political issues. Despite the romance trappings, this is where the movie leans more into the biopic side, because Markle’s very identity is political in nature. As a...
